• Ubuntu impossible to install: "unable to find a medium containing a live filesystem"

  Yes, I have read questions and answers with similar titles for this issue, which prevented me from installing Ubuntu for several MONTHS now, trying to figure it out. I have a MacBookPro with triple partition (one for Mac Snow Leopard, one for Windows 7, one for Linux) created with reFIT firmware (not BootCamp). I set up the system according to these instructions for reFIT: http://lifehacker.com/5531037/how-to-triple+boot-your-mac-with-windows-and-linux-no-boot-camp-required Now. There is a free partition ready to accept Linux into its arms, but Linux does not want to participate. Most answers to the issue "unable to find a medium containing a live filesystem" point to changing the BIOS booting system (which I don't know how to do, especially using this reFIT booting system), and to changing the socket of the USB (which does not concern me, since I am using a CD, actually I tried with a CD, then with a DVD, since a blank CD is only 700MB while the iso image file of Ubuntu is about 731MB). Anyway. This is what happens: I am in the Mac system (using the Mac partition) I insert the DVD with the burned image of Ubuntu (yes I have tried burning it again and agin on both CD and DVD blank discs). I restart the computer. When reFIT loads, I hold down the ALT key until the CD image appears. I select it, and hit Enter. A small Ubuntu icon appears at the bottom of the screen. Then a Ubuntu sign appears in the middle of the screen with small dots underneath, lighting up progressively over and over to indicate it's loading. Then everything turns black and the following message appears, at the end of a few lines of text: "unable to find medium with live file system". Please provide very practical suggestions on what to do to an unexperienced wannabe Ubuntu very patient user. Please start by saying how do I access the BIOS setup from reFIT bootup, and exactly what and why I need to try and change. (Will this mess up my reFIT bootup?) And anything else I need to do to finally be able to install Ubuntu. Thanks

• Can't enable wireless lan on Fujitsu Siemens A1665G with Ubuntu 11.10 installed

  I saw my old Notebook yesterday and wanted to make that work again. On Windows XP the wireless worked still fine. Then I installed new Ubuntu 11.10 32bit and I'm sadly not able to make the wireless enabled. [I replaced Win XP entirely] lspci lists following network: 08:0a.0 Network controller: Broadcom Corporation BCM4318 [AirForce One 54g] 802.11g Wireless LAN Controller (rev 02) So after recommendation from this link I installed the b43 firmware module. iwconfig prints the following: wlan0 IEEE 802.11bg ESSID:off/any Mode:Managed Access Point: Not-Associatd Tx-Power=off Retry long limit:7 RTS thr:off Fragment thr:off Power Management: off As you can see, my wireless lan adapter is not turned on. sudo iwconfig wlan0 txpower auto Doesn't change anything. Then I tried to make it work with rfkill. rfkill list 0: phy0: Wirless LAN Soft blocked: no Hard blocked: yes sudo rfkill unblock all rfkill list 0: phy0: Wireless LAN Soft blocked: no Hard blocked: yes remains the same. The question is now, how I could enable the hard blocked wireless LAN. There is no hardware switch for wlan integrated. However there is a button to change the state. I always thought this would be software sided, but it seems to make some hardware changes as well... The wireless LED is also not blinking (as it did on windows xp) I reset bios and searched for some settings in there, but it has only a few options and nothing to do with wireless settings, nothing works here.. At last I tried to install the acer hotkeys but I was not able to manage that. I installed the acerhkgui package, but in initializing progress, it was not able to compile acer hotkeys for my machine. There was a message that asm/linkage.h was not found while compiling. Do you have any ideas what I could do to make this hard blocked stuff disabled and my wireless card work? PS: I also tried sudo rm /dev/rfkill and a reboot to reinit that stuff... No success :(

• SharePoint Server Search Not Crawling

  Hi there, we recently moved some sites into a new farm, everything seems to be doing fine, but the search for reasons I can't identify are not crawling the migrated content. We're getting this message in our crawl log for every document: http://xxx/sites/...announcements The object was not found. (The item was deleted because it was either not found or the crawler was denied access to it.) Of course the first thing I suspected was the crawler access account, so I logged into SharePoint with the account and was able to access via that URL just fine. I tried upping permissions (even all the way up to Admin) but to no avail. Thoughts?

• Java EE 7 JSR Submitted

  Java EE 7 has been filed as JSR 342 in the JCP program. This JSR (Java Specification Request) will develop Java EE 7, the next version of the Java Platform, Enterprise Edition. It is an "umbrella JSR" because the specification includes a collection of several other JSRs. The proposal suggests the addition of two new JSRs: Concurrency Utilities for Java EE (JSR-236) and JCache (JSR-107) as well as updates to JPA, JAX-RS, JSF, Servlets, EJB, JSP, EL, JMS, JAX-WS, CDI, Bean Validation, JSR-330, JSR-250, and Java Connector Architecture. There are also two new APIs under discussion: a Java Web Sockets API and a Java JSON API. These are the new JSRs that are currently up for ballot:• JSR 342: Java Platform, Enterprise Edition 7 Specification• JSR 340: Java Servlet 3.1 Specification• JSR 341: Expression Language 3.0• JSR 343: Java Message Service 2.0• JSR 344: JavaServer Faces 2.2All 5 JSRs are now up for Executive Committee voting with ballots closing on 14 March, and slated for inclusion in Java EE  7.  All of these JSRs are also open for Expert Group nominations. • Installing Windows Mobile SDK without Visual Studio

  Is it possible to install the Windows Mobile SDK without having Visual Studio? I am using SharpDevelop to write a Windows Mobile application, but I need to use an assembly in the Windows Mobile 6.0 SDK. When I try to install the SDK I get a message that says Visual Studio is a prerequisite, and I am un able to install it. Is there a way to trick it in to thinking Visual Studio is installed; maybe a registry entry that can be added or something, or am I just hosed? Is there a reason I need to pay for Microsoft's IDE, or is this just a way for Microsoft to make some extra money? Thanks,

• nvidia segfault crashes XServer (12.04 fresh install)

  I am on a fresh install of 12.04, and my video card is a Quadro FX 570, which appears to be supported (see output of unity_support_test below). But my Xserver crashes randomly and causes my session to just shutdown and bring me back to the logging screen. This happens several times per hour.   I'm unsure about how to make MWE with C-Obective, so if you need anything else let me know. I am trying running through a tutorial on building an iPhone app and have gotten stuck defining a function. I keep getting an error message saying "use of undeclared indentifer." However I believe I have initiated the function. • Opening password protected Excel 2007 documents by double clicking from My documents does not work u

  When all of the following conditions are true, excel will open (most of the time) but will not open the document itself. No error is displayed. This only occurs with Excel files, Word and powerpoint do open perfectly. Conditions : OS is "Windows 7 Professional 64-bit" office is "Office 2007 Ultimate". excel file is in .xls (2003 format) excel file is password protected excel file is in "My Documents" (or a subfolder of it) file is double-clicked from explorer under Windows 7. Following options do open the excel file as it should : right click and selecting the (bold) open action single click the file and pressing enter moving the file to the desktop and double-click it. non password protected files do open from the same directory. Actions taken not resolving the problem: - reboot - repair office installation - system restore does not work because of Antivirus application installed (message from system restore, using "Symantec Internet Security 2010") Anyone any idea ?

The exceptions are being thrown when trying to access directories that are virtual dirs in IIS, and plain old UNC network shares What the implications for enabling the WebDAV extensions on our live web server? And will this solve our problems with the exceptions in our event log?

• Why powershell runs executables in separate window?

  On one of my servers (2008 R2) powershell refuses to run executables without extension, so typing cmd (or &cmd) in command prompt results in folowing error message: The term 'cmd' is not recognized as the name of a cmdlet Invoking executable one of the following ways pops out separate window (which executes asynchronously in respect to parent). I've tried that in x86 version of powershell and in x64 one. I've tried -Noprofile argument. PATH seems to be OK. It includes System32 and all. The only way I've managed to execute cmd inline form powershell is opening standard cmd.exe shell, executing powershell.exe from it and executing cmd /c echo test from it. Inception, huh? What should I try next?

• Wamp website stop responding till restarting services [on hold]

  My first message here after many non conclusive research about my problem. So I'm administering a drupal website and I have migrate all application to new version: PHP 5.3.5 - 5.4.16 Apache 2.2.17 - 2.4.4 MySQL 5.1.36 - 5.6.12 With the new Wamp version. Also update Drupal from 6.19 to 6.30. I have update it by uninstalling everything in the server and reinstalling the new version. Since this update the website sometimes become unresponsive till we restart wamp. No warrning and no error in event log. Can somebody help me with this problem? I also cannot enable SSL, after configuring it wamp won't start. I have do many research and test but I still have many issue. • How to enable extended logging for classic asp on IIS7 on Windows 2008 R2

  I had to deploy an application that was not written by me onto the above configuration. It is a rather bizarre hybrid of asp.net and classic asp and it's the classic asp that is proving troublesome. The client is having problems with 500 Internal Server Errors appearing and I can see some of these in the logs but I only get the error code and the page name but little else. What I would like to see is the actual error message to at least give me an idea what is going on (or not going on, depending on your point of view) I don't want to display errors in the browser as I don't know the code well enough and this could (for all I know) display some crazy code where the db password is hard-coded into the site.

• can't open web pages in google chrome

  When I type in google chrome "google.com" I receive such error: 404. That’s an error. The requested URL /cgi-bin/authme?s=0.2068704296834766 was not found on this server. That’s all we know. It seems I'm redirected somehow by some reason. Probably lenovo notebook problem? At the same time IE works fine. This problem reproducable with other webpages too, for example i'm redirected from vkontakte.ru to such web page which doesn't exist too http://www.vkontakte.ru/cgi-bin/authme?s=0.7140683813486247 Also I see such message when chrome starts "Lütfen yönlendirilirken bekleyin", this is very strange because I only have russian and english languages installed in system.

• Weird problem with connection from putty to ubuntu server via SSH

  Hello. I have an Ubuntu Server 9.10 box with sshd configured. I have two computers with Windows 7 professional and putty installed. Day ago, both computers was able to connect ubuntu server both via putty and plink. I have installed sun-java6-jre on ubuntu server, and now have a weird problem. First Windows 7 computer can still connect with both putty GUI and command-line plink. Second computer can connect via putty gui, but if i issue plink command that works perfectly on first computer: plink www.hostname.tk -i c:\users\username\documents\key\private.ppk I get login prompt, enter same username as on first computer, and receive following weird error message: bash: www.hostname.tk: command not found I can't see any difference between my Windows 7 computers :(. The ppk key used is same (i copied it multiple times both ways). hostname and username are same. Anyone have any ideas why such thing happens and what can i do in order to troubleshoot and fix it?

• How can I recover [data from] my failing USB key?

  I have a Corsair Flash Voyager USB key, and it's almost completely failed. When I plug it into my [WinXP] computer, the OS mounts it and open up explorer to the drive's root directory. However, if I try to copy any data off, I get an error message saying that the device is not there. If I leave it plugged in, the OS seems to oscillate between seeing it and not seeing it, since the "Safely Remove Hardware" tray icon appears and disappears every few seconds. The damage was probably caused by my abuse, either from plugging it in with my keys hanging off of it or from losing the cap and keeping it in my pocket uncapped. Is there anything I can do to save the data from it or even rehabilitate the drive?

  I'm exploring a piece of code in Architecture Explorer in Visual Studio 2010 to study the relations between methods. I noticed a strange behavior. Take the following source code. It generates a hello message based on a template and a template engine, the template engine being a method (a sort of strategy pattern simplified at a maximum for demo purposes). public string GenerateHelloMessage(string personName) { return this.ApplyTemplate( this.DefaultTemplateEngine, this.GenerateLocalizedHelloTemplate(), personName); } private string GenerateLocalizedHelloTemplate() { return "Hello {0}!"; } public string ApplyTemplate( Func<string, string, string> templateEngine, string template, string personName) { return templateEngine(template, personName); } public string DefaultTemplateEngine(string template, string personName) { return string.Format(template, personName); } The graph generated from this code is this one: Change the first method from this: public string GenerateHelloMessage(string personName) { return this.ApplyTemplate( this.DefaultTemplateEngine, this.GenerateLocalizedHelloTemplate(), personName); } to this: public string GenerateHelloMessage(string personName) { return this.ApplyTemplate( (a, b) => this.DefaultTemplateEngine(a, b), this.GenerateLocalizedHelloTemplate(), personName); } and the graph becomes: While semantically identical, those two versions of code produce different dependency graphs, and Architecture Explorer shows no trace of the lambda expression (while Visual Studio's code coverage, for example, shows them, as well as Code analysis seems to be able to understand that the link exists). How would it be possible, without changing the source code, to: Either force Architecture Explorer to display everything, including lambda expressions, Or make it traverse lambda expressions while drawing a dependency through them (so in this case, drawing the dependency from GenerateHelloMessage to DefaultTemplateEngine in the second example)?

• Legal Web Fonts & Licensing

  So I'm a little confused in regards to legality of using fonts for web. Often from designers I get a PSD file and it uses a special font, and the font is supplied. However attempting to convert the font using: http://www.fontsquirrel.com/fontface/generator Ends up with a message saying it's blocked by Adobe. Not only that sometimes if the font can be converted, it often looks like crap when viewed in a browser. I assume that the generator is primarily for people to convert their own fonts, but if you purchase the use of a font then you can only use it for Web if the terms allows you to? The fonts used in PSD's are often Adobe Fonts, I can't find anything that suggests I can convert those and use them on the web. So I'm wondering if anyone knows the legal rights around using Photoshop supplied fonts on the web? In addition I'm wondering what resources are available (free/paid) that provide fonts that can be used on the web. • new SBS 2011 Standard problems

  Brand new SBS 2011 install. I went to remove the DHCP server role. It went into a "Preparing to configure Windows. Do not turn off your computer." Been there for hours. Finally, decided to power off and restart. After boot up, the same window and message appear and it just sits there spinning. "Preparing to configure Windows. Do not turn off your computer." I'd love to get this installed before the end of the day but it doesn't look like that's possible. Any ideas on how to get passed this?

• How do I access shared folders on Ubuntu server from Mac OS?

  I have an old dell desktop running ubuntu 11.04, I also have samba installed on it. I'm trying to access the shared folders on the Ubuntu machine from my Mac, so I go into 'Finder', click on 'Go' and 'Connect to Server'. I type in the ip address of the ubuntu machine smb://xxx.xxx.x.xx and click connect, I can then see the list of shared folders from the ubuntu machine so I know its making a connection. But when I access the 'Music' folder I get an error message stating: There was an error connecting to the server "xxx.xxx.x.xx". Check the server name or IP address, and try again. Any thoughts anyone ? EDIT I have a external hard drive attached to the server, and the folders I'm trying to access are located on that external hard drive. The location of the folder is /media/HD-CELU2/test, so I think the path from Finder should be smb://xxx.xxx.x.xx/media/HD-CELU2/test, but having tested this, I'm still not getting in. P.S. I'm using Samba as I have a Windows machine on my home network as well.

  I've updated my gmail password and so i must update my blackberry password. I tried updating the email password to which i got the following message. Invalid email address or password. Please verify your email address and password. The information you provided is incorrect. If the error persists contact gmail.com (Your email provider). Please try again. I tried again, with what i know the password to be, with password show on. I've also deleted the account and tried to create it. I've tried going to the "Last account activity: XXXX details" menu and signing out all devices. I'm continually getting the above error, but the account activities don't seem to show any sign of a mobile attempt to access my mail account. Has anyone had this issue before and how did you sign it. Thanks in advance.

• How do I deploy a charm from a local repository?

  I am trying to run the Charm tutorial from the juju documentation by creating a new charm from a local repository. I started by installing the charms from bzr to my local ubuntu 12.04 desktop running in a virtual machine. The new file structure is the following: ubuntu@ubuntu-VirtualBox:~$ find charms/precise/drupal/ charms/precise/drupal/ charms/precise/drupal/hooks charms/precise/drupal/hooks/db-relation-changed charms/precise/drupal/hooks/install charms/precise/drupal/hooks/start charms/precise/drupal/hooks/stop charms/precise/drupal/metadata.yml charms/precise/drupal/README When I install the mysql charm, which was downloaded from the remote charm repository, it works fine.   I just upgraded Ubuntu from 13.04 to 13.10, and now I can't log into Active Directory; my system is integrated using PowerBroker Identity Services (PBIS), which used to be called Likewise-Open. So far I have identified the following symptoms: I am able to log in with my credentials via ssh. The screen goes black when attempting log into my account via the login screen. I've tried leaving the domain, purging PBIS, and re-installing the latest version of PBIS. I've been trying the troubleshooting section I found here, but I haven't had any success. • OS X mavericks latex issue

  I upgraded to Mavericks and found that pdflatex stopped working. I followed some previous discussions to recreate a link that Mavericks had broken. sudo ln -fs /Library/TeX/Distributions/.DefaultTeX/Contents/Programs/texbin texbin The error message changed to "Permission denied". I tried to change permissions, but it does not work.
