• OS X mavericks latex issue

  I upgraded to Mavericks and found that pdflatex stopped working. I followed some previous discussions to recreate a link that Mavericks had broken. sudo ln -fs /Library/TeX/Distributions/.DefaultTeX/Contents/Programs/texbin texbin The error message changed to "Permission denied". I tried to change permissions, but it does not work. • How do I add xen kernel boot parameters in grub2?

  I know that I can add command line parameters to the grub2 command line by editing /etc/default/grub according to this answer How do I add a boot parameter to grub2 in Ubuntu 10.10? However, that would apply to ALL kernels would it not? How do I apply the command line parameters to specific kernels? i.e. only xen. • Mounting FTP as filesystem in debian using curlftpfs

  I am trying to mount a FTP as filesystem in debian using curlftpfs. What I get after running curlftpfs -o allow_other username:[email protected] /mnt/myftp/ is just: fuse: failed to open /dev/fuse: Permission denied even when run as root. What am I doing wrong? (curlftpfs is in version curlftpfs 0.9.2 libcurl/7.21.0 fuse/2.8) edit: When I write ls -lah /dev/fuse, I see crw-rw---- 1 root fuse 10, 229 Apr 9 00:34 /dev/fuse ...but even when I add both myself and user root to group fuse, neither me (as a user) or user root can mount ftp, I still see fuse: failed to open /dev/fuse: Permission denied edit2: Even if I write this fairly insecure and crazy line: sudo chmod a+rwx /dev/fuse I still get the permission denied message. Which permissions could be denied? edit3: I forgot to mention I am on VPS with OpenVZ. I thought that there is no issue with this, but apparently, there is! I am adding the resolution as the answer.

• Nvidia API mismatch

  I had planned a day of relaxing with Portal 2 but on starting Steam (for the first time in a couple of weeks) I was greeted with the following message in the terminal: Error: API mismatch: the NVIDIA kernel module has version 270.41.19, but this NVIDIA driver component has version 270.41.06. Please make sure that the kernel module and all NVIDIA driver components have the same version. I'll confess I don't really know what it's talking about when it says driver. The verion of nvidia-current is 270.41.19. I thought that was the driver and module, all in one. I use the X-SWAT PPA and I have noted that the nvidia-settings package has boosted to 275.09.07. As this is just a settings application, I don't think this mismatch has anything to do with this. It's also not the same version as the problem being described. I'd rather not purge back to the standard Nvidia driver as it's less than stable on my GTX580. I would accept an answer that takes the manual setup and makes it recompile when the kernel recompiles (ie, some DKMS wizardry) but it has to work. I don't want to drop back to text-mode every time I restart after a kernel upgrade. Edit: Minecraft works without a single complaint about driver versions. Penumbra dies with roughly the same error when entering a game.

• When to use http status code 404

  I am working on a project and after arguing with people at work for about more than a hour. I decided to know what people on stack-exchange might say. We're writing an API for a system, there is a query that should return a tree of Organization or a tree of Goals. The tree of Organization is the organization in which the user is present, In other words, this tree should always exists. In the organization, a tree of goal should be always present. (that's where the argument started). In case where the tree doesn't exist, my co-worker decided that it would be right to answer response with status code 200. And then started asking me to fix my code because the application was falling apart when there is no tree. I'll try to spare flames and fury. I suggested to raise a 404 error when there is no tree. It would at least let me know that something is wrong. When using 200, I have to add special check to my response in the success callback to handle errors. I'm expecting to receive an object, but I may actually receive an empty response because nothing is found. It sounds totally fair to mark the response as a 404. And then war started and I got the message that I didn't understand HTTP status code schema. So I'm here and asking what's wrong with 404 in this case? I even got the argument "It found nothing, so it's right to return 200". I believe that it's wrong since the tree should be always present. If we found nothing and we are expecting something, it should be a 404. Extra Also, I believe the best answer to the problem is to create default objects when organizations are created, having no tree shouldn't be a valid case and should be seen as an undefined behavior. There is no way an account can be used without both trees. For that reasons, they should be always present.

  I am trying to install Windows 8 Transformation Pack v4.0 on my Sony Vaio laptop with the following options: When I run (as administrator) the setup file, it starts to install but gives the following error at some point: The file 'C:\Windows\Fonts\segoui.ttf' could not be opened. Please check that your disk is not full and that you have access to the destination directory. Since I run the installer as administrator, this error message seems strange to me. Segoe UI font is also installed on my PC. When I try to install with default system fonts (without Segoe UI), it gives the same error again: What should I do to solve this problem?

• Mystery "users" email group

  This morning, our entire company received a spam message sent to [email protected], where "ourdomain.on.ca" is our actual domain. There is a distinguished name that this could correspond to: CN=Users,DC=ourdomain,DC=on,DC=ca Looking at the attributes though, there is no mail, no proxyAddresses, no signs that there is a mailbox configured there. I did some LDAP queries, searching for: (proxyAddresses=smtp:[email protected]) ([email protected]) But am not seeing any records. (I also search for known email addresses to ensure the tree was being searched properly.) We are running Exchange 2003. Is there another place to look for group email addresses? Is it possible that the distinguished name is being automatically translated to an email address?

• CREDSSP 500 errors

  Hello all, We are experience a 500 http error when trying to run remote powershell on a win 2008 R2 server. I have run enable-wsmancredssp for both client and server roles on this machine. I have also run "winrm quickconfig". Also the allowfreshcredentials delegation group policy is setup correctly as well. There are active listeners running and credssp is enabled for client and service. I can connect with kerberos (by not specifing authentication type), but the following remote powershell command fails: Enter-PSSession -ComputerName serverX -credential domain\user -Authentication Credssp Error: Enter-PSSession : Connecting to remote server failed with the following error message : The WinRM client received an HTTP server error status (500), but the remote service did not include any other information about the cause of the failure. For more information, see the about_Remote_Troubleshooting Help topic. At line:1 char:16 I have not been able to find any useful information on how to troubleshoot this. I have restarted Winrm, rebooted, disabled and re-enabled credssp. Please help.

  I have a question about the SSL during the use of CAS in LIferay. I have generate the certificate using Openssl (I flollowed this tutorial) on my CAS Server and now I would to import the certificate using keytool on the Liferay machine. To import the certificate with keytool I use this command: keytool -import -alias tomcatLiferay -file /myopensslcertificate.crt But when I import the .crt certificate file and I check the CAS connection I get the message: SSL Error. IF I try to generate the certificate using keytool (keytool -genkey...) on the CAS server end I import this certificate using keytool -import .... I can connect to the CAS server and I not see any errors... I think that I use a wrong way to generate the certificate with openssl or a wrong way to import the certificate (generated with openssl) with keytool.

  LS, I have ESXi 4, with all the 2009 updates installed. When i try to update the last firmware update, i receive the following error: Copy of /bootbank/sys.vgz to /tmp/stage/firmware/bank/sys.vgz failed md5sum validation (8:02:31:29.332 cpu1:1787979) warning 20-Jan-10 9:42:02 PM I updated the vmware-tools separatedly, which succeeded. I receive this message if i use the update GUI, but also when using the CLI tool. I haven't got a clue how to solve this, anyone any ideas? Or having similar problems?

• Windows server 2008 r2 console stuck at "waiting for user profile service"

  Hi, I have a windows 2008 R2 server, running on dell poweredge t300. Using hyper-v to run a windows 2008 R2 server also. Suddenly, today, my virtual console (on the virtual copy of windows 2008 server r2) will not let me login as administrator. It starts to login but then sticks at the message: Please wait for the User profile Service and is unresponsive to keypresses (incl ctrl-alt-del). The only way out is a crash. • Running Multiple Instances of Firefox

  I am running SysInternal's Desktops 1.02 and FireFox 3.6.2. I have noticed that while I can have IE8 open in multiple Virtual Desktops, you can not Firefox. If you try you get the error message: Firefox is already running, but is not responding. To open a new window, you must close the existing FireFox process, or restart your system. I did a little digging around to work around this and came up with creating a second profile via the Firefox profile manager (accessed by starting FF with the "-p" switch). This unfortunately created a new problem which is my add-ons (of which I use many) do not stay synchronized between profiles. Is there a better approach here?

For that I'm looking for the easiest way of writing messages which then get syndicated as RSS feed. Something like a mini blog tool. The simpler the better. Enter title, body and send, all subscribers of the feed get the new message. Sort of like Twitter without using Twitter. • 12.04 kernel panic

  Hello I'm having trouble with Ubuntu 12.04. I downloaded the ISO and burned it into a CD and tried to install Ubuntu, but during the installation process, I got this message Kernel panic-not syncing Attempted to kill init! pid:1,comm:init not tainted 3.2.0-23-generic-pae#36-ubunru then it says switching to console text, and it just hangs in there and nothing happens. I burned another CD with Ubuntu 10.04, but I get a different problem: Ubuntu just gets stuck at the splash screen with the 5 dots which move from red to white, and nothing happens. I was able to boot before with 10.04 but I recently upgraded my computer graphics card and power supply. please see my system specs. Gigabyte GA-M68M-S2P (rev. 2.3) GeForce 7025 Chipset Athalon II x4 640 QuadCore Radeon HD 6870 sapphire OCZ ModXStream Pro 600W Modular High Performance Power Supply 3 hard drives one is IDE and the other two SATA IDE DVD Drive If any one could help me, I'd be most appreciative. • How to load tun module in linux?

  I cannot manage to load the tun module in my archlinux box. I'm trying to connect with openvpn, but the log says nm-openvpn[6662]: Note: Cannot open TUN/TAP dev /dev/net/tun: No such device (errno=19) lsmod | grep tun returns nothing. If I run sudo modprobe tun it returns failure, but no error message, and lsmod still has no tun. The module seems to exist, as there is a tun.ko.gz in /lib/modules/....... I really dont know what else to try. Thanks in advance

• Remote desktop session ends abruptly with a "protocol error"

  Intermittently we get a problem where a remote desktop session will get disconnected with the error message “Because of a protocol error, this session will be disconnected. Please try connecting to the remote computer again.” We are getting this with one server only which is running Windows Server 2008, connecting with Windows 7 clients. The session itself stays running, you just get disconnected, and you can try and reconnect. Sometimes you get in for a while then it will kick you out. We are connecting from Windows 7 clients. We have tried connecting using Cord on a Mac and this works fine, so it's not like the session itself is corrupted. One problem is that there are some critical applications running under the session (I know, let's not discuss the idiocy of that), so we cannot reset the session in any way during the working day – so any diagnostics must have minimum impact. • Cannot mount a CIFS network share over VPN

  I have setup u VPN connection to our Windows 2008 server at the office and it seems to work fine. For some reason, however, I still am not able to access the network shares over a VPN connection using my standard fstab entries. When I am physically connected to the network, it works fine, but now when trying this over VPN I get the following error: mount error(110): Connection timed out Refer to the mount.cifs(8) manual page (e.g. man mount.cifs) My /etc/fstab looks like this: //server2008/share /mnt/share cifs iocharset=utf8,credentials=/home/aron/.smbcredentials,uid=1000 0 0 As said, it works fine when physically connected, but over VPN it just wont work. Any help is appreciated. EDIT: It seems the Windows firewall is making things harder on me. When I turn it off, I get a bit further, although I still get the following error message: Unable to find suitable address. The strange thing is that I have file sharing added as an exception to the firewall. Port 137-139 and port 445 are open, which should suffice, shouldn't it? EDIT Jan 20th: Still not working. When I have the firewall turned on, it times out. When I turn it off, I get the not suitable address error. Turning the firewall off is not an option, by the way.

• Postgresql init.d script not working

  I installed Postgresql 8.4 on my VPS with Ubuntu 10.04. Default setup, nothing unusual. After the installation the dbserver is automatically started and is running great. The installer also sets a init.d script in place. This script however, doesn't seem to affect Postgres. $ sudo /etc/init.d/postgresql stop The above line is not stopping the server. The command does not fail or show any message. The logs won't say anything as well. After killing all postgres processes with killall I cannot get Postgres working again using the init script. When rebooting my VPS it somehow starts up and works again.

• Can't install Windows 7 on Acer Aspire M1100

  When I install Windows 7, everything goes smooth but as soon as it's done and Windows needs to reboot for the last time before getting the desktop, the computer stucks to Verify DMI Pool Data............. and then, nothing. I change the CMOS battery, I tried so many setup in BIOS, even load default settings... Nothing worked. The HDD light is not flickering anymore, no HDD activity. CTRL-ALT-DEL doesn't work. It's just impossible to load Windows 7. I tried Windows XP and this works fine. I also tried the Acer (Futureshop) recovery CD and I get an Hexademical error message stating the install cannot continue. Is there a BIOS flash apps somewhere or a fix I can apply to have Windows 7 Ultimate installed on my computer. Any takers?

• Sending mail to local address crashes web server (sendmail)

  When trying to send mail automatically from a script at example.com via PHP's mail() to [email protected], the Apache server throws an Internal Error. I believe internally it is configured to use sendmail. The message gets dropped into ~/dead.letter and the general error log reads: [Wed May 12 11:26:45 2010] [error] [client xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx] malformed header from script. Bad header=/home/example/dead.letter... S: /home/example/www/test.php Trying any other address, not @example.com, works just fine. I have googled and serverfaulted for solutions, but they all require to edit configuration files in /etc/mail and similar system places, which is not an option, since this problem occurs on a shared host in which I only have access to ~/. Does anyone have a suggestion?

• Debugging Windows Service Timeout Error 1053

  If you ever receive an Error 1053 for a timeout when starting a Windows Service you've written, the underlying problem might not have anything to do with a timeout.  Here's the error so you can compare it to what you're seeing: --------------------------- Services --------------------------- Windows could not start the Service1 service on Local Computer.   Error 1053: The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion. --------------------------- OK   --------------------------- Searching the Web for a solution to this error in your Windows Service will result in a lot of wasted time and advice that won't help.  Sometimes you might get lucky if your problem is exactly the same as someone else's, but this isn't always the case.  One of the solutions you'll see has to do with a known error on Windows Server 2003 that's fixed by a patch to the .NET Framework 1.1, which won't work.  As I write this blog post, I'm using the .NET Framework 4.0, which is a tad bit past that timeframe. Most likely, the basic problem is that your service is throwing an exception that you aren't handling.  To debug this, wrap your service initialization code in a try/catch block and log the exception, as shown below: using System; using System.Diagnostics; using System.ServiceProcess; namespace WindowsService { static class Program { static void Main() { try { ServiceBase[] ServicesToRun; ServicesToRun = new ServiceBase[] { new Service1() }; ServiceBase.Run(ServicesToRun); } catch (Exception ex) { EventLog.WriteEntry("Application", ex.ToString(), EventLogEntryType.Error); } } } } After you uninstall the old service, redeploy the service with modifications, and receive the same error message as above; look in the Event Viewer/Application logs.  You'll see what the real problem is, which is the underlying reason for the timeout. • SharePoint site access request denied permissions

  Here is a good catch-22. When a user without any permissions on a site requests access from the _layouts/AccessDenied.aspx page it takes them to the Request Access page (_layouts/ecm_reqacc.aspx). When the user fills out the form with a simple message it is supposed to send an email to the address specified in the site collection and take them to _layouts/confirmation.aspx. Unfortunately the users are getting another access denied error instead. I have tried going to _layouts/accessdenied.aspx on a site I am the administrator of and the email is sent fine, so it is not a problem with sending the emails. What should I check and/or give access to in order for authenticated, but not permissioned users the ability to send access requests?
