  I'm developing a home security application. One thing I'd like to do is automatically turn it off and on based on whether or not I'm at home. I have a phone with Wifi that automatically connects to my network when I'm home. The phone connects and gets its address via DHCP. While I could configure it to use a static IP, I'd rather not. Is there any kind of 'Ping' or equivalent in C# / .Net that can take the MAC address of a device and tell me whether or not it's currently active on the network?

  There are several ways how to toggle hidden files in Finder - via a shell command, or AppleScript, or Automator action, or even a Dashboard widget. All of them are doing the same thing and unfortunately require to close and reopen Finder windows, which is quite annoying. On the other hand, for the Open File dialog one can easily toggle hidden files by pressing Command+Shift+Period. Is it possible to make a script or plugin for Finder to toggle hidden files w/o relaunching? How would you make it?

  I'm thinking of making a little web tool for analyzing the search engine optimization and web accessiblity of a whole website. First of all, this is just a private tool for now. Crawling a whole website takes up alot of resources and time. I've found out that wget is the best option for downloading the markup for a whole site. I plan on using PHP/MySQL (maybe even CodeIgniter), but I'm not quite sure if that's the right way to do it. There's always someone who recommends Python, Ruby or Perl. I only know PHP and a little bit Rails. I've also found a great HTML DOM parser class in PHP on SourceForge. But, the thing is, I need some feedback on what I should and should not do. Everything from how I should make the crawl process to what I should be checking for in regards to SEO and WCAG. So, what comes to your mind when you hear this?

• Can't read output of httpservice

  I have an HTTPservice that uses id="myhttp" url="site.com/script.php" method="POST" resultFormat="xml" script.php returns $output = '' . $worked . ''; echo $output; Problem is when I try to read worked, it tells me the variable worked is not there event.result.worked myhttp.lastResult.worked The only thing that works is using toString() myhttp.lastResult.toString() or event.result.toString() What am I doing wrong? I plan to add other variables to the output time, so need to access each time and worked separately. I may also need to return multiple responses each with their own worked and time values. How do I do that. I was thinking to not use XML. Is there a more lightweight option. Flex shows I have the following options: array e4x flashvars object text xml

  Here is the thing. I have a directed weighted graph G, with V vertices and E edges. Given two nodes in the graph, let's say A, and B, and given the weight of an edge A-B denoted as w(A, B), I need to find a node C so that max(w(A, C), w(B, C)) is minimal among all possibilities. By possibilities I mean all the values C can take. I don't know if it is completely clear, if it's not, I'll try to be more precise. Thanks in advance.

• Multiple things at once (Threads?)

  All, What is a really simple way of having a program do more than one thing at once, even if the computer does not necessarily have multiple 'cores'. Can I do this by creating more than one Thread? My goal is to be able to have two computers networked (through Sockets) to respond to each-other's requests, while my program will at the same time be able to be managing a UI. I want the server to potentially handle more than one client at the same time as well. My understanding is that the communication is done with BufferedReader.readLine() and PrintWriter.println(). My problem is that I want the server to be waiting on multiple readLine() requests, and also be doing other things. How do I handle this? Many thanks, Jonathan

  what i need is i have linked my project with the cruise control, so when ever a build happens i want to copy the bin folder to a seperate destination folder with version number. That is when the project build happens for the second time i dont want to replace the bin folder of the first build i want to save this with another version number. How can i do that. Right now i got the thing how to copy the folder but it was overwriting the previous one. i dont want that to happen please help me how to implement the concept of versioning.

  Hi, I have two tables: 1) Application(int appid, int statusid, String appname, String appcity with getter and Setter methods) 2) App_Status(int statusid,String statusDescription with setter and getter methods) I want to map Application table with App_Status so that I don't have to query separately App_Status table in order to get the statusDescription. One thing I have to careful is that no matter what (Insert,update or delete) to the Application table the App_Status table should be unaffected means its a read only table which is maintained by the DBA internally and used only for lookup table. I am using JPA annotations so please suggest how to handle this.

  Hi, I posted this question on Three20 google group but did not get any response. So I thought I try this forum. I am using TTPhotoViewController to display photos. I am following sample code given in Three20 sample project: TTCatalog/PhotoTest1Controller.m. In my case some of the images are less than (320,480). The problem which I am facing is that when my image is 200*300 then TTPhotoViewController re-sizes it to full screen on load which distorts the image. I was wondering if there is a way to tell TTPhotoViewController to display image in its actual size and not to resize it. The only thing which I have changed is viewDidLoad function in PhotoTest1Controller.m.   I have an app that must get data from the Sqlite database in order to display the first element to the User. I have created a domain object which wraps the DB access and is a thread safe singleton. Is this following strategy optimal to ensure the fastest load given the iPhone's file access and memory management capabilities in threaded apps: 1) In the AppDelegate's FinishedLaunching event the very first thing I do is create the domain singleton within a new thread. This will cause the domain object to go to Sqlite and get the data it needs without locking the UI thread. 2) I then call the standard Window methods to add the View and MakeKeyAndVisible etc. Is there an earlier stage in the AppDelegate where I should fire off the thread that creates the Domain Object and accesses Sqlite?

  I was just experimenting around with one of my programs, trying to make it looks prettier and I found something interesting. I have an interface that 4 classes inherit from. I found that if I pass the Class as an object to a method like so: ClassTest classtest = new ClassTest(); DoOperation(classtest); private void DoOperation(object o) { ((InterfaceClass)o).DoThis(); } So I can pass any type of class that inherits from InterfaceClass, and it will preform the proper interface operation? This is the coolest thing I've ever found from OOP (something I've never really studied) I really thought interfaces were created for the sole purpose of organization for developers. Are there more uses for interfaces than this?

I've been asked by decision makers who want to help to fairly and accurately measure that time. How do you quantify the amount of time you spend waiting on the computer (during compiles, waiting for apps to open every day, etc). Is there software which effectively reports on this sort of thing? Is there an OS metric (I/O something something, pagefile swapping frequency, etc, etc) that captures and communicates this particularly well? Some sort of benchmark you'd recommend me testing against?

• Get File Size of Modified Image Before Writing to Disk

  I'm doing a conversion from .jpg to .png in System.Drawing and one thing that I've found is that this conversion tends to make the resulting converted .png much larger than the .jpg original. Sometimes more than 10x larger after converting to .png. Given that seems to always be the case (unless you know of a way around this), is there any way to determine the file size of that .png before it is saved to disk? For example, maybe write it to a stream first and then get that stream size? How would I go about doing this?

• how to control textbox type to double in visual basic?

  Hi, I'd like to make a textbox that accepts only numbers, but not integer, but rather double. I've read here about e.Handled = Not Char.IsDigit(e.KeyChar) and it works, but again, it can be used only for integer, since it declines decimal point. Another thing I've read here is If Not Double.TryParse(TextBox2.Text, value) Then .... and it would work fine, except that it allows only decimal comma instead of point. I don't know whether it's because of my location settings (Hungary, we use commas instead of points), but I don't have any other idea how to solve my problem, and the SQL server I send my data uses decimal point. • Copy of Access mdb database being updated by live database

  I'm trying to compute statistics for data held in an Access .mdb database. In order to avoid interfering with the live database, I'm working from a copy which I made by simply using copy-paste in Windows Explorer. The copy resides in the same directory, but with a different name. I'm using R and RODBC to connect to the copy of the file. The strange thing is that new data that is being updated on the original live database is appearing in my queries. This is despite the file timestamps of the copy not changing at all. It is also causing some slowdown in the live database. My understanding is that the .mdb files are standalone, or is this not the case? Should I have copied the database in a different way?

For example, if a deals status changes from pending to win, I want to show it, and if the value goes up or down, I want to show it, that kind of thing. • PHP strip_tags only at the end of the string

  Ok, well, I just want to use strip_tags function on the very end of a string to get rid of any <br /> tags. Here's what I have now, but this is no good because it strips these tags from everywhere in the string, which is not what I want. I only need them stripped out if it's at the end of the string... $string = strip_tags($string, strtr($string, array('<br />' => '&#10;'))); How can I do this same thing, except only at the very end of a string??   "Refer to objects by their interfaces" is a good practise, as mentioned in Effective Java. So for example i prefer List<String> al = new ArrayList<String>(); over ArrayList<String> al = new ArrayList<String>(); in my code. One annoying thing is that if i type ArrayList<String> al = new and then hit Ctrl+Space in Eclipse i get ArrayList<String>() as propostal. But if i type List al = new and then hit Ctrl+Space i will get only propostal to define anonymous inner class, but not propostals such as new ArrayList<String>(), what is 99% the case, or for example new Vector<String>(). Is there any way to get the subclasses as propostals for generic types?

• Using ASP.NET Redirect without string URL?

  For instance, what I have right now is the following: Page.Response.Redirect("Default.aspx", false); Needing to hardcode the string just seems odd to me. The Default.aspx page is already in my project. So is there a way to do the redirect something like the following: Page.Response.Redirect(Default.aspx, false); Where Default.aspx is just the web form. I'd think that this way it would be obvious if there was a problem such as you deleted the web form but didn't update the redirects. Is this possible? Or is there another way entirely I should be looking at this? I suppose I could do something with a static property on the class, but I am wondering if there is a built in thing for this?

  I have a simple nav made up of the following HTML; <div class="inner"> <div class="button"><img class="portal" src="images/portalbutton.png" /></div> <a href="#"><div class="prod_description">&nbsp;</div></a> </div> There are a number of items (All set to float left along side each other) to make up a nav bar. When I hover over .button and/or .prod_description I want the .inner <div> to have the class .hover added to it. This is so I can set a background image around the whole thing (Kind of like highlighting the nav item). I only then want to remove .hover when another .button or .prod_description is hovered over, in which case this nav item takes the .hover class.

  I have tried so many thing but i can't resolve that Error. I can connect with my username and password to: Database in SQLDeveloper, in SQL-Plus, in Server-Explorer (Visual Studio 2008) and all works fine. But if i Compile my Project i get that Error. Why is that? I tried to set case_sensitive to false, but the same error appears. I dont know what else to do.   Hi, I googled this many times but now I have to ask it here. I want to make a workflow for a website for Developpement/Production. My constraint is that I use Facebook Connect (Facebook Graph now) so I need to have the dev and prod on the same domain and server. (to be able to log in and test the features) I thought I will edit the CodeIgniter Index.php to redirect if I have a specific user agent (I can edit the one of my firefox) You think it's a good Idea or you have a better one ? And now comes the eternal question : how can I deploy this the easy way ? should I use Capistrano or Phing ? or simply a script with SVN ? Please help me, I'm totally new to this Deployment thing. I used to work directly in production for my little websites or on other domains. but now it's not possible anymore.

• JQuery Remove() doesn't work

  I have a DIV element inside another as follows: <div id="filters"> <div class="filterData">hello</div> </div> and I'm trying to remove the element: $("#filters").remove('.filterData'); Problem is, it doesn't. I've tested on other elements on my page and it works. The thing is, I cannot append to it, show or hide it, use .empty. I've also changed it to be a DIV with 'filterData' as the ID and told JQuery to remove it but it refuses to... Has anyone had a stuborn element like this before? EDIT: I'm also trying to remove it inside a $(document).ready function so I have no idea.
