• Programming CLI Commands in Program [C / LINUX]

  I am attempting to make a program in C which presents a GUI and allows the user to select from a list of applications, which to install on the computer. I can manage the gui, but I've never been taught how to actually issue command line commands. I know with bash its just apt-get install firefox for example, but how do I do such a thing with C? i.e. on click, the program runs 'apt-get install The other problem is I'm not familiar with the proper name for this interaction, so it is hard to search. • How easy would it be to refactor a small JSP/Servlet/JDBC project to SpringMVC/Hibernate

  With reference to this post, I am considering starting a new web-based Java project. Since I don't know Spring/Hibernate I was concerned if it's a bad plan to start learning them while creating a new project, especially since it will slow down the early development. One idea I had was to write a prototype using tech I do know, namely JSP/Servlets/JDBC, since I can get this running much quicker with my current knowledge. I could then throw the whole thing away and start over with Spring, etc, but I'd like to consider how easy it would be to refactor a smallish project from JSP/Servlets/JDB to SpringMVC/Hibernate? My DB could of course be re-used but what about other code... would I expect to save most of it plugged into an MVC framework, or is the paradigm shift big enough this would cause more trouble than it avoids? Please use the other question for more general advice on choosing technologies

• Why does the CPU window always appear when trying to debug my project after a rebuild in Delphi 2010

  Hi, Whenever I rebuild my application and try to step into a break-point the CPU window always appears. From what I understand the CPU window appears when DCU does not match up with the source file, however, in my case the DCU's are defintely being re-compiled and there are no old ones lying around or anything like that. The strange thing here is if I close down the application and re-open the project, place the breakpoint and run it works fine. I can even modify files and just press F9 to run the project and it works fine....it only seems to be when I rebuild the project (via IDE Project menu or the project context menu) that this CPU window never breaks into the source (even though it can find it!). I also noticed in the callstack a unit called Generics is always the top of the stack, never the unit my break point is in, this is no way related to where my break point is. Any ideas?

• C# type safe and developer friendly list/collection technique

  I am populating a "Dictionary" with the results of an sp call. The key is the field name and the value is whatever value the sp returns for the field. This is all well and good but I'd like developers to have a predefined list of keys to access this list, for safety and documentation reasons. What I'd like to do is have something like an enum as a key for the dictionary so developers can safely access the list, but still have the ability to access the dictionary with a string key value. I am hoping to have a list of string values that I can access with an enum key AND a string key. Please make sure any suggestions are simple to implement, this is not the kind of thing I'm willing to build a lot of overhead to implement.

• Ranged integers in .NET (or C#)

  Am I being blind, or does the .NET framework not provide any kind of ranged integer class? That is, a type that would prevent you setting a value outside some given bounds that are not the full range of the basic data type. For example, an integer type that would restrict its values to between 1 and 100. Showing my age here, but back in '93, I remember using that sort of thing in Modula-2 (eeek!), but I've not seen explicit framework / language support for it since. Am I just missing something, or is it a case of "it's so simple to make your own that the framework doesn't bother"? Cheers.

  i want to use google map api for my desktop application. the application will be totally connected to internet. while i was searching some research notes about this implementation. i found a ideal site with the configurations. but it has some java files to be downloaded. but when i tried that website its not loading. which is swinglabs.org http://today.java.net/pub/a/today/2007/10/30/building-maps-into-swing-app-with-jxmapviewer.html any other options of doing this api implementation to my desktop application. and one more thing. i tried downloading the google api. even it ask a url. we have to provide a url then only we get a key to download it. and the api should run in that specific url. otherwise its not working. how this appears to a desktop application any ideas welcome..

• Python BeautifulSoup Print Info in CSV

  I can print the information I am pulling from a site with no problem. But when I try to place the street names in one column and the zipcodes into another column into a CSV file that is when I run into problems. All I get in the CSV is the two column names and every thing in its own column across the page. Here is my code. • XNA Multi-Thread Jitters

  Hi guys, brand new question. Just implemented multi-threading into my XNA game as it was unable to keep up with using 1 processor. MT is all implemented fine and everything, however the player seems to jitter all over the spot every now and then. I originally thought it was a loss of data between the update and render, but even when i did the player update in the render it did the same thing. It's not a memory/processor issue as i'm no where near maxing out my RAM or processors. It's strange aswell because none of the other entities in the game seem to have any of these issues. Any ideas at all??

• Are ASP.NET readymade controls really production worthy ?

  I have come across the ASP.NET ready made controls like grid, repeater... etc. For example while dealing with GRID i remember following facts, ASP.NET V1.1 has DataGrid with "virtual row count" which is heavily used for custom paging which is need of big sites to perform well. ASP.NET V2.0 added the GridView with all sort of cool features but also split the DataSource parts as different component. Also "virtual row count" is not supported and for pagination to be done DataSource control is need to be used. After all these thing i thought that ASP.NET control are not made to be used as is for the development. Please let me know whether i am right or wrong? Also if you think i am wrong PLEASE provide inputs/links which can help me come out of this thinking of mine.

• How to prevent swallowing exceptions caused by unset expectations for a mocked object?

  I am looking for a way to modify catch block depending on if it's executed during the unit test run or not. The purpose is basically to detect/setup mock expectations which are swallowed because catch doesn't rethrow. I am using MSTest. One obvious thing is using preprocessor but I don't think it works. Especially if to use DEBUG define. There should be an easy way to detect that, shouldn't it? • Escaping quotes twice in PHP

  Hello, I have a complicated form where I first have to take some _GET parameters and obviously I have to do a mysql_real_escape_string() on them since I look stuff up in the database with them. Them problem for me is after the initial db lookup. When the user submits a form, I send them along as a _POST request and obviously have to do this mysql_real_escape_string call again just in case someone tries to hack my site with a faked form submission. Then the problem I have is the arguments are escaped twice and my queries begin to look strange like this: select field1 , field2 , from my_table where some_id = \'.$lookup_id.\' ... So the system seems to be adding \' and it is messing me up :) Also, in my other forms I have not seen such behavior. Any ideas on what may be causing this? One weird thing is that I tried to send unescaped parameters to the post, and the same problem happens. That is a clue, but not a sufficient one for me. :( Thanks, Alex

• Which messaging services can BlackBerry apps integrate with?

  I'm in charge of having a BlackBerry app developed that translates the contents of a message from one language to another. So the aim would be to have a button at the bottom of a received message which says 'translate this'. I've heard that this kind of thing is possible using J2ME plus the native BlackBerry API. Can this be done for all kinds of messanging features on the Blackberry, or just some? ie I'm thinking SMS, email and BB messages. Secondly, given that the translation itself is done via a web request, I feel like this should be a fairly lightweight application. Would anyone care to hazard a guess how long it might take an experienced contractor to develop such an app?

• Define and return a struct in c

  I'm trying to convert some code from Javascript to c. The function creates an array (which always has a fixed number of items) and then returns the array. I've learned that in c it's not straightforward to return an array, so I'd like to return this as a struct instead. My c is not all that great, so I'd like to check that returning a struct is the right thing to do in this situation, and that I'm doing it the right way. • Creating an Application to Save Arbitrary Application State

  See this SuperUser question. To summarize, VM software lets you save state of arbitrary applications (by saving the whole VM image). Would it be possible to write some software for Windows that allows you to save and reload arbitrary application state? If so (and presumably so), what would it entail? I would be looking to implement this, if possible, in a high-level language like C#. I presume if I used something else, I would need to dump memory registers (or maybe dump the entire application memory block) to a file somewhere and load it back somewhere to refresh state. So how do I build this thing?

• How to make technical training session useful and successful for trainee?

  Are these suggestions good to give for a successful training session? Practice time should be always given immediate after technical training? usually after receiving any technical session about any new thing we do routine work. If we don't do practice just after training, later when we do any work related to that training then we feel we need training again. So if we are getting training today and will not use it for some period of time (15 -30 -60 days) then the training is of no use, as it is at the wrong time. I.e.   The best thing I could come up with so far is this function: numberFromList([X], X) :- digit(X), !. numberFromList(List, N) :- member(X, List), delete(List, X, LX), numberFromList(LX, NX), N is NX * 10 + X. where digit/1 is a function verifying if an atom is a decimal digit. The numberFromList(List, N) finds all the numbers that can be formed with all digits from List. E.g. [2, 3] -> 23, 32. but I want to get this result: [2, 3] -> 2, 3, 23, 32 I spent a lot of hours thinking about this and I suspect you might use something like append(L, _, List) at some point to get lists of lesser length. I would appreciate any contribution.

• Google checkout - Order processing notification handler

  Hi I need to integrate google checkout on my website. I have successfully implemented the order placing and others stuff and using the sandbox I have tested that users can successfully add items to cart and and pay thereafter. I am using my own customized shopping cart written in php mysql. The last thing I need to do is pass the new order id to google checkout and receive notifications with the new order id as well as other data google sends. I know I have to setup a path to the handler script in my accounts. I did it in my sandbox account as well. But can't find a simple pice of code to get it done. Even if I use sample code from google, just cant figure out the format of the returned data in new order notification and also how to send custom data to the cart, which would come back with new order notifications? I am just lost on this. Please help!

  The simplified version of the problem I am seeing in IE7 can be demonstated using FireBug Lite. On a page loaded with jQuery, I open FireBug Lite (via bookmarket) and I enter the following: image = $('<img src="http://example.com/boofar.jpg" border="12" width="95" height="95" title="Booya">')[0]; and the result echoed is: <img title="Booya" contentEditable="inherit" start="fileopen" loop="1" src="http://example.com/boofar.jpg" border="12"> Where are the width and height attributes? Furthermore, image.width; and image.attributes.width.value; return 0 and "0". Seen this with both jQuery 1.2.6 as well as 1.4.2. It does the right thing in IE8 and FF. Any ideas where those attributes went? Very annoying....

• What are all the special iPhone / iPod Touch HTML tags?

  After peeking at the SO source, I noticed this tag: <link rel="apple-itouch-icon" href="/apple-touch-icon.png" /> Which after a quick Google revealed an Apple "favicon" type thing for display on your homepage ("WebClip Bookmark" to be exact). The only other one that jumps to mind is the: <input type="search" results="5"/> This type="search" causes the field to "inherit" the Apple search icon, and the optional results="x" enables a history of "x" keywords to be maintained. I'm therefore wondering, what other Apple/Safari (iPhone/iPod Touch) specific HTML tags and attributes are out there that I'm not aware of! Curious minds need to know!
