• mysql client fails to start on command line

  Hi, I have been using the mysql command line client a lot before but I suddenly start getting this error when I try to launch it. mysql: relocation error: mysql: symbol strmov_overlapp, version libmysqlclient_16 not defined in file libmysqlclient.so.16 with link time reference The only significant event that comes into my mind is updating from Ubuntu 9.10 to 10.4. I'm not sure if there's anything else that I did to mess it up. I tried uninstalling both the mysql server and mysql client like so but to no avail. sudo aptitude purge mysql-server-5.1 Any help will be much appreciated, thanks.

• How does Outlook handle old recurring reminders?

  Context: Windows 7 Ultimate 32-bit edition Microsoft Office 2007 Outlook Steps to Reproduce: Make an event that recurs once a week. Wait a week. See that it pops up OK. Wait a month. Notice that it doesn't say that it is a month overdue. Expected Result: The usual note that the reminder is [x] weeks overdue. Actual Result: Something like "6 days overdue". Possible Excaberating Issue: I have many overdue reminders. For the ones that aren't time critical (and all other things being equal), I work by category and age. For example, I do health-related reminders when I'm doing health stuff; if I have 2 health-related reminders, I do the older one first. Big Question: How is Outlook supposed to handle this sort of overdue recurring reminder? Is there any way to get Outlook to act the way I expect it to?

• Using PreApplicationStartMethod for ASP.NET 4.0 Application to Initialize assemblies

  Sometimes your ASP.NET application needs to hook up some code before even the Application is started. Assemblies supports a custom attribute called PreApplicationStartMethod which can be applied to any assembly that should be loaded to your ASP.NET application, and the ASP.NET engine will call the method you specify within it before actually running any of code defined in the application. Lets discuss how to use it using Steps : 1. Add an assembly to an application and add this custom attribute to the AssemblyInfo.cs. Remember, the method you speicify for initialize should be public static void method without any argument. Lets define a method Initialize. You need to write : [assembly:PreApplicationStartMethod(typeof(MyInitializer.InitializeType), "InitializeApp")] 2. After you define this to an assembly you need to add some code inside InitializeType.InitializeApp method within the assembly. public static class InitializeType {     public static void InitializeApp()     {           // Initialize application     } } 3. You must reference this class library so that when the application starts and ASP.NET starts loading the dependent assemblies, it will call the method InitializeApp automatically. Warning Even though you can use this attribute easily, you should be aware that you can define these kind of method in all of your assemblies that you reference, but there is no guarantee in what order each of the method to be called. Hence it is recommended to define this method to be isolated and without side effect of other dependent assemblies. The method InitializeApp will be called way before the Application_start event or even before the App_code is compiled. • Doubts about several best practices for rest api + service layer

  I'm going to be starting a project soon that exposes a restful api for business intelligence. It may not be limited to a restful api, so I plan to delegate requests to a service layer that then coordinates multiple domain objects (each of which have business logic local to the object). The api will likely have many calls as it is a long-term project. While thinking about the design, I recalled a few best practices. 1) Use command objects at the controller layer (I'm using Spring MVC). 2) Use DTOs at the service layer. 3) Validate in both the controller and service layer, though for different reasons. I have my doubts about these recommendations. 1) Using command objects adds a lot of extra single-purpose classes (potentially one per request). What exactly is the benefit? Annotation based validation can be done using this approach, sure. What if I have two requests that take the same parameters, but have different validation requirements? I would have to have two different classes with exactly the same members but different annotations? Bleh. 2) I have heard that using DTOs is preferable to parameters because it makes for more maintainable code down the road (say, e.g., requirements change and the service parameters need to be altered). I don't quite understand this. Shouldn't an api be more-or-less set in stone? I would understand that in the early phases of a project (or, especially, an entire company) the domain itself will not be well understood, and thus core domain objects may change along with the apis that manipulate these objects. At this point however the number of api methods should be small and their dependents few, so changes to the methods could easily be tolerated from a maintainability standpoint. In a large api with many methods and a substantial domain model, I would think having a DTO for potentially each domain object would become unwieldy. Am I misunderstanding something here? 3) I see validation in the controller and service layer as redundant in most cases. Why would I validate that parameters are not null and are in general well formed in the controller if the service is going to do exactly the same (and more). Couldn't I just do all the validation in the service and throw a runtime exception with a list of bad parameters then catch that in the controller to make the error messages more presentable? Better yet, couldn't I just make the error messages user-friendly in the service and let the exception trickle up to a global handler (ControllerAdvice in spring, for example)? Is there something wrong with either of these approaches? (I do see a use case for controller validation if the input does not map one-to-one with the service input, but since the controllers are for a rest api and not forms, the api parameters will probably map directly to service parameters.) I do also have a question about unchecked vs checked exceptions. Namely, I'm not really sure why I'd ever want to use a checked exception. Every time I have seen them used they just get wrapped into general exceptions (DomainException, SystemException, ApplicationException, w/e) to reduce the signature length of methods, or devs catch Exception rather than dealing with the App1Exception, App2Exception, Sys1Exception, Sys2Exception. I don't see how either of these practices is very useful. Why not just use unchecked exceptions always and catch the ones you actually do care about? You could just document what unchecked exceptions the method throws.

• QapTcha error issue. Works locally, not on live server [migrated]

  I am adding QapTcha (http://demos.myjqueryplugins.com/qaptcha/) to a website that I am working on and I'm getting the error "Uncaught TypeError: Cannot read property 'error' of null". What's weird to me is everything is working perfectly locally. No errors or anything. Once I uploaded via ftp to the live server, I get the above error. • "Oracle Coherence 3.5" Book - My Humble Review

    After reviewing the book in more detail I say again that it is a great guide for sure. Lots of important concepts that sometimes can be somewhat confusing are deeply reviewed, including all types of caching schemes and backing maps, and the cache topologies with their corresponding performances and very useful "When to use it?" sections. Some functionalities that are very desirable or used a lot are reviewed with examples and best practices of implementation, including: Data affinity Querying Pagination Indexes Aggregations Event processing, listening and triggering Data persistence Security Regarding the networking and architecture topics, Coherence*Extend is exhaustively reviewed, including C++ and .NET clients, with very good tips and examples, even including source codes. Personally, I am also glad to see that the address providers (<address-provider> tag), new feature in Coherence 3.5 which is a way to programmatically provide well-known addresses in order to connect to the cluster, is mentioned on the book, because it provides new functionalities to satisfy some special configuration requirements for example: Provide a way to switch extend nodes in cases of failure Implement custom load balancing algorithms and/or dynamic discovery of TCP/IP connection acceptors Dynamically assign TCP address and port settings when binding to a server socket Another very interesting and useful section is the "Coherent Bank Sample Application", which is a great tutorial, useful to understand how Coherence interacts with third party products establishing a clear integration with them, including the use of non-Oracle products like MS Visual Studio.

While there was an easy solution, I gave a more general solution to solve the more general problem for an NxM matrix. A handful of people commented that this generalisation was bad because it made the solution more complex. One such comment is voted +8. Putting aside the hard-to-explain voting effects on SO, there are two types of complexity to be considered here: Runtime complexity, i.e. how fast does the code run Code complexity, i.e. how difficult is the code to read and understand The question of runtime complexity is something that requires a better understanding of the input data today and what it might look like in the future, taking the various growth factors into account where necessary. The question of code complexity is the one I'm interested in here. By generalising the solution, we avoid having to rewrite it in the event that the constraints change. However, at the same time it can often result in complicating the code. In the reference question, the code for NxN is easy to understand for any competent programmer, but the NxM case (unless documented well) could easily confuse someone coming across the code for the first time. So, my question is this: Where should you draw the line between generalising and keeping the code easy to understand?

The code implements proper event sequence, consistent interfaces, correct data and control flow, completeness, appropriate allocation timing and sizing budgets, and error definition, isolation, and recovery. and The software components and units of each software item have been completely and correctly integrated into the software item Not sure how to verify without testing but it is not there as a technique. From IEEE: Verification: The process of evaluating software to determine whether the products of a given development phase satisfy the conditions imposed at the start of that phase. [IEEE-STD-610]. Validation: The process of evaluating software during or at the end of the development process to determine whether it satisfies specified requirements. [IEEE-STD-610] At the end of development phase? That would mean UAT.. So the question is, what testing (unit, integration, system, uat) will be considered verification or validation? I do not understand why some say dynamic verification is testing, while others that only validation. An example: I am testing an application. System requirements say there are two fields with max. lenght of 64 characters and Save button. Use case say: User will fill in first and last name and save. When checking the fields and Save button presence, I would say its verification. When I follow the use case, its validation. So its both together, done on the system as a whole.

A news ticker is a user interface element that displays a subset of a list of items, cycling through them one at a time after a set interval. For example, on Cisco's website there is a news ticker that shows the company's latest news items. Each news item is a one sentence link, such as "Desktop Virtualization Gathers Steam," or "Cisco Reports First Quarter Earnings." Clicking a headline whisks you to a page that shows the full story. Cisco's news ticker shows one headline at a time; every few seconds the currently displayed headline fades out and the next one appears. In total, Cisco has five different headlines - the ticker displays each of the five and then starts back from the beginning. • Collision Detection with SAT: False Collision for Diagonal Movement Towards Vertical Tile-Walls?

  Edit: Problem solved! Big thanks to Jonathan who pointed me in the right direction. Sean describes the method I used in a different thread. Also big thanks to him! :) Here is how I solved my problem: If a collision is registered by my SAT-method, only fire the collision-event on my character if there are no neighbouring solid tiles in the direction of the returned minimum translation vector. I'm developing my first tile-based 2D-game with Javascript. To learn the basics, I decided to write my own "game engine". I have successfully implemented collision detection using the separating axis theorem, but I've run into a problem that I can't quite wrap my head around. If I press the [up] and [left] arrow-keys simultaneously, my character moves diagonally towards the upper left. If he hits a horizontal wall, he'll just keep moving in x-direction. The same goes for [up] and [left] as well as downward-diagonal movements, it works as intended: http://i.stack.imgur.com/aiZjI.png Diagonal movement works fine for horizontal walls, for both left and right-movement However: this does not work for vertical walls. Instead of keeping movement in y-direction, he'll just stop as soon as he "enters" a new tile on the y-axis. So for some reason SAT thinks my character is colliding vertically with tiles from vertical walls: http://i.stack.imgur.com/XBEKR.png My character stops because he thinks that he is colliding vertically with tiles from the wall on the right. This only occurs, when: Moving into top-right direction towards the right wall Moving into top-left direction towards the left wall Bottom-right and bottom-left movement work: the character keeps moving in y-direction as intended. Is this inherited from the way SAT works or is there a problem with my implementation? What can I do to solve my problem? Oh yeah, my character is displayed as a circle but he's actually a rectangular polygon for the collision detection. Thank you very much for your help.

• Windows 2003 and 2008 AD integrated DNS zones

  We have a Windows 2003 server DC1 which is our primary DC holding all FSMO roles. It also is a DNS server for our domain domain.local which is an active directory integrated zone. We also have a Windows 2008 DC name DC2 All servers have the correct DNS entries etc. However on all dns servers there are event id 4515 indicating there are duplicate zones in separate directory partitions and only one will be used until the other is removed. And I see these, there is a zone for domain.local under the default naming partition CN=System, CN=MicrosoftDNS, DC=domain.local. As well as the DomainDNSZones partition DC=DomainDNSZones, DC=DOMAIN, DC=local, CN=MicrosoftDNS It seems that the partition in the Default Naming partition is the one which is being used currently. Which one should be in use? How do I make the EventID 4515's go away? EventID 4515: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/867464 Thanks

• Windows Firewall failing after 9-12 hours?

  I have 2 VM servers in the exact same NIC configuration: Server 2003 R2, one NIC connected to private (hardware firewall) network in a 10.x private address space, and one NIC connected straight to public internet. Windows Firewall is enabled for the Public Internet NIC only. Now, what doesn't make sense - this fails generally after 9-12 hours. It's not exact, but once or twice a day, traffic will just stop on the Internet NIC. No event log entries when it happens, and restarting the Windows Firewall service as well as stopping or restarting IPSec Services (just for fun) has no effect. Once the server is rebooted, everything is fine again for another 1/2 day. Any suggestions?

• How do I implement movement in a WPF Adventure game?

  I'm working on making a short WPF adventure game. The only major hurdle I have right now is how to animate objects on the screen correctly. I've experimented with DoubleAnimation and ThicknessAnimation both enable movement of the character, but the speed is a bit erratic. The objects I'm trying to move around are labels in a grid, I'm checking the mouse's position in terms of the canvas I have the grid in. Does anyone have any suggestions for coding the movement, while still allowing mouse clicks to pick up items when needed? It would be nice if I could continue using the Visual Studio GUI Editor. By the way, I'm fine with scrapping labels in a grid for a more ideal object to manipulate. This is the bit I really can't get my head around. So if the swipe generates a lot of velocity then the wheel will carry on moving slightly in that direction until the overall force which pulls the wheel back to the starting position kicks in. Any ideas/code snippets?

• Why do all my sites randomly stop in iis?

  I have a GoDaddy Account with a virtual hosting environment. For some reason every few weeks, all of our sites (both websites and FTP sites) are stopped. I restart them and they start normally, but I would like to prevent this from happening in the future. It is an iis thing. When you open up iis you can see that each of the sites has been stopped in iis. Also, I have tried looking at the event viewer and I don't see anything, but I am not sure what I am looking for.

• Google reader Keyboard shortcuts not working in Firefox 3.6

  I just upgraded to Ubuntu 10.04 which comes with Firefox 3.6.3. Now Google reader some keyboard shortcuts stopped working, The j/k keys are ok, but 'v', 'Shift+x' and others don't work and start the Search As You type functionality I've always used. The Javascript console only shows this warning: Warning: The 'charCode' property of a keyup event should not be used. The value is meaningless. Source File: http://www.google.com/reader/view/?tab=my#overview-page Line: 0 This did not happen with Firefox 3.5.x even though I've always had the Search as you type option enabled.

• Help me find the offending process waking my Windows 7 PC from hibernate every night

  Recently my Windows 7 64-bit PC has started waking every night from hibernation around 3:30am. I have done the following to try and figure out what is causing the issue with no luck: Examined the Windows Event logs. Nothing is noted Ran powercfg -lastwake and that reports nothing c:\powercfg -lastwake Wake History Count - 1 Wake History [0] Wake Source Count - 0 Ran powercfg to find what devices are armed for wake. Interestingly, this reports two items (I've already unchecked the "Allow this device to wake the computer" in device manager): The keyboard and something called the "eHome Infrared Receiver (USBCIR)". This is a desktop PC and it does not have an Infrared received, so I'm not sure what that device is. Suffice to say it does not have the option to "Allow device to wake..." available in Device Manager. C:\powercfg -devicequery wake_armed eHome Infrared Receiver (USBCIR) HID Keyboard Device My next step is to disable the Keyboard from wake, but I'm not convined that's the problem. This is on a Dell XPS435 if that helps anyone.
