• Oracle Fusion Applications: Changing the Game

  Originally posted in the Oracle Profit Magazine, November 2010 Edition. When the order processing system red-flags a customer's credit status, the IT department doesn't get the customer's call. When a supplier misses a delivery date for a key automotive assembly, it's not the CIO who has to answer for the error. Knowledge workers (known in IT circles as "users") are on the front lines when an exception occurs in an established business process. They're also the ones who study sales trends to decide when to open a new store in an up-and-coming neighborhood, which products are most profitable, how employee skill sets are evolving, and which suppliers are most efficient. In short, knowledge workers are masters of business as unusual. Traditional enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems and other familiar enterprise applications excel at automating, managing, and executing standard business processes. These programs shine when everything goes as planned. Life gets even trickier when a traditional application needs to be extended with a new service or an extra step is added to a business process when new products are brought to market, divisions are merged, or companies are acquired. Monolithic applications often need the IT department to step in and make the necessary adjustments--incurring additional costs and delays. Until now. When Oracle unveiled the much-anticipated family of Oracle Fusion Applications at Oracle OpenWorld in September 2010, knowledge workers in particular had a lot to cheer about. Business users will soon have ready access to analytical information and collaboration tools in the context of what they are working on, so they can make better decisions when problems or opportunities arise. Additionally, the Oracle Fusion Applications platform will make it easy for business users to tweak processes, create new capabilities, and find information, often without the need for IT department assistance and while still following company guidelines. And IT leaders will be happy to hear about new deployment options, guided implementation and setup tools, and cost-saving management capabilities. Just as important, the underlying technologies in Oracle Fusion Applications will allow organizations to choose among their existing investments and next-generation enterprise applications so they can introduce innovations at a pace that makes the most business and financial sense. "Oracle Fusion Applications are architected so you don't have to do rip and replace," says Jim Hayes, managing director of the consulting firm Accenture. "That's very important for creating a business case that will get through the steering committee and be approved by the board. It shows you can drive value and make a difference in the near term." For these and other reasons, analysts and early adopters are calling Oracle Fusion Applications a game changer for enterprise customers. The differences become apparent in three key areas: the way we innovate, work, and adopt technology. Game Changer #1: New Standard for InnovationChange is a constant challenge for most businesses, whether the catalysts are market dynamics, new competition, or the ever-expanding regulatory environment. And, in an ongoing effort to differentiate, business leaders are constantly looking for new ways to do business, serve constituents, and bring new products and services to market. In addition, companies face significant costs to keep their applications up-to-date. For example, when a company adds new suppliers to a procurement system, the IT shop typically has to invest time, effort, and even consulting fees for custom integrations that allow various ERP systems to communicate with each other. Oracle Fusion Applications were built on Web services and a modular SOA foundation to ease customizations and integration activities among all applications--whether from Oracle or another vendor. Interfaces and updates written in ubiquitous Java, rather than a proprietary coding language, allow organizations to tap into existing in-house technical skills rather than seek expensive outside specialists. And with SOA, organizations can extend a feature set or integrate with other SOA environments by combining Web services such as "look up customer" into a new business process managed by the BPEL orchestration engine. Flexibility like this has long-term implications. "Because users capture these changes at a higher metadata layer, not in the application's code, changes and additions are protected even as new versions of Oracle Fusion Applications are released," says Steve Miranda, senior vice president of applications development at Oracle. "This is a much more sustainable approach because you don't incur costly customizations that prevent upgrades and other innovations." And changes are easier to make: if one change is made in the metadata, that change is automatically reflected throughout the application interface, business intelligence, business process, and business logic. Game Changer #2: New Standard for WorkBoosting productivity comes down to doing the basics right: running business processes more efficiently and managing exceptions more effectively, so users can accomplish more in the course of a day or spend more quality time with the most profitable customers. The fastest way to improve process efficiency is to reduce the number of steps it takes to execute common tasks, such as ordering office equipment from an internal procurement system. Oracle Fusion Applications will deliver a complete role-based user experience with business intelligence and collaboration capabilities provided in the context of the work at hand. "We created every Oracle Fusion Applications screen by asking 'What does the user need to know?' 'What does he or she need to do?' and 'Who do they need to work with to get the job done?'" Miranda explains. So when the sales department heads need new laptops, the self-service procurement screen will not only display a list of approved vendors and configurations, but also a running list of reviews by coworkers who recently purchased the various models. Embedded intelligence may also display prevailing delivery lead times based on actual order histories, not the generic shipping dates vendors may quote. The pervasive business intelligence serves many other business activities across all areas of the enterprise. For example, a manager considering whether to promote a direct report can see the person's employee profile, with a salary history, appraisal summaries, and a rundown of skills and training. This approach to business intelligence also has implications for supply chain management. "One of the challenges at Ingersoll Rand is lack of visibility in our supply chain," says Mike Macrie, global director of enterprise applications for global industrial firm Ingersoll Rand. "Oracle Fusion Applications are going to provide the embedded intelligence to give us that visibility and give us the ability to analyze those orders at any point in our supply chain." Oracle Fusion Applications will also create a "role-based user experience" that displays a work list of events that need attention, based on user job function. Role awareness guides users with daily lists of action items and exceptions. So a credit manager may see seven invoices with discounts that are about to expire or 12 suppliers that have been put on hold because credit memos are awaiting approval. Individualization extends to the search capabilities of Oracle Fusion Applications. The platform uses Web-style search screens powered by an Oracle enterprise search engine, with a security framework that filters search results so individuals will only see the internal information they're authorized to access. A further aid to productivity is Oracle Fusion Applications' integration with Web 2.0 collaboration and social networking resources for business environments. Hover-over text will reveal relevant contact information whenever the name of a person appears in an Oracle Fusion Application. Users can connect via an online chat, phone call, or instant message without leaving the main application, reducing the time required for an accounts payable staffer to resolve a mismatch between an invoiced charge and the service record, for example. Addresses of suppliers, customers, or partners will also initiate hover-over text to show contact details and Web-based maps. Finally, Oracle Fusion Applications will promote a new way of working with purpose-driven communities that can bring new efficiencies to everything from cultivating sales leads to managing new projects. As soon as a lead or project materializes, the applications will automatically gather relevant participants into an online community that shares member contact information, schedules, discussion forums, and Wiki pages. "Oracle Fusion Applications will allow us to take it to the next level with embedded Web 2.0 tools and the embedded analytics," says Steve Printz, CIO and vice president, supply chain management, at window-and-door manufacturer Pella. "[This] allows those employees today who are processing transactions to really contribute to the success of the company and become decision-makers." Game Changer #3: New Standard for Technology AdoptionAs IT becomes a dominant component of how businesses run and compete, organizations need to lower the cost of implementing applications and introducing new application features. In the past, rolling out new code often required creating a test bed system, moving beta code to a separate system for user feedback, and--once all the revisions were made--moving version one of the software onto production systems, where business users could finally get the needed new features. Oracle Fusion Applications will use a dedicated setup manager application to streamline this process. First, the setup manager will help scope out the project, querying users about their requirements. "From those questions and answers we determine the steps and the order of those steps that will enable that task," Miranda says. Next, system utilities will assign tasks to owners, track completion status, and monitor the overall status of a programming effort. Oracle Fusion Applications can then recommend Web services that allow users to migrate setup choices and steps across all the various deployments of the application. Those setup capabilities automate the migration from test systems to production systems, as well as between different business units that may be using the same application. "The self-service ability of the setup manager helps business users change setups with very little intervention from the IT team," says Ravi Kumar, vice president at IT services company Infosys. "That to me is a big difference from how we've viewed enterprise applications before." For additional flexibility, organizations will be able to adopt Oracle Fusion Applications modules in either of two modes: a single-instance alternative uses one database for all Oracle Fusion Applications, while a "pillar mode" creates separate databases to underpin each application. This means IT departments running any one of Oracle's applications or even third-party applications can plug Oracle Fusion Applications modules into their environment and see additional business value created on top of their existing systems. And Oracle Fusion Applications offer a hybrid approach to deployment. The applications are all software-as-a-service-ready, so customers can choose on-premises, public or private cloud, or a combination of these to suit their business needs. It's that combination of flexibility and a roadmap for the future that may be the biggest game changer of all. "The Oracle Fusion Applications architecture allows us to migrate our company at a pace that's consistent with our business strategy, whereas before we might have had to do it with a massive upgrade," says Macrie of Ingersoll Rand. "We're looking forward to that architecture to really give us more flexibility in how we migrate over time."   Google’s latest cloud offering Google Drive provides 5GB of free storage to let you store documents, spread sheets, photos and other stuff and access them using a variety of devices – PCs, Macs, smartphones and tablets. You can also set up offline access to Google Drive so that you can access files on the move even if you don’t have access to internet connection. To access Google Drive offline you need Chrome browser and here are the simple steps to be followed for setting up. Step 1:  Login to Google Drive and click the gear icon in the upper right of your window. Step 2: Select Set up Docs offline from the drop-down menu. The “Set up offline viewing of Google Docs” dialog will appear Step 3:  Authorize Google Chrome to store your Google Drive content by clicking on “Allow offline docs” and then install “Docs Chrome web app” by clicking on “Install from Chrome web store”. You’ll be taken to the Chrome web store, where you’ll need to click Install on the right-hand side of the browser window. Step 4: Once the app is installed, you’ll be taken to a Chrome page with the Google Docs app icon. Click the icon to go back to your Documents List. Google Chrome take few minutes to prepare Google Drive for offline access by downloading all the files to your local computer. Once it’s completed, you can access Google Drive files offline. To access files of Google Drive offline point your Chrome browser to drive.google.com. When offline your Google Docs stored on Google Drive are available in view only mode. You can open Google Documents, Spread sheets & Presentations and see the content but you can’t edit them.

  Once again (like in 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010) the time has come to wish you a Happy New Year and to share my favorite posts from the year we just left behind. 1. My first blog entry in January and last one in December were both about my Windows Phone app: Translator by Moth and Translator by Moth v2. In between, I shared a few code snippets for Windows Phone development including a watermark textbox, a scroll helper, an RTL helper and a network connectivity helper - there will be more coming in 2012. 2. Efficiently using Microsoft Office products is the hallmark of an efficient Program Manager (and not only), and I'll continue sharing tips on this blog in that area. An example from last year is tracking changes in SharePoint-hosted Word document. 3. Half-way through last year I moved from managing the parallel debugger team to managing the C++ AMP team (both of them in Visual Studio 11). That means I had to deprioritize sharing content on VS parallel debugging features (I promise to do that in 2012), and it also meant that I wrote a lot about C++ AMP. • PHP won't load php.ini

  I am racking my brain here and I must be doing something really stupid. I'm trying to setup PHP on Win2008 R2/IIS 7.5. I unpacked php538 into c:\php538 and renamed the php.ini-development to php.ini. Then i tried going to a command prompt and running: c:\php358\php -info I get: Configuration File (php.ini) Path => C:\windows Loaded Configuration File => (none)Scan this dir for additional .ini files => (none) Additional .ini files parsed => (none) Loaded Configuration File => (none) Scan this dir for additional .ini files => (none) Additional .ini files parsed => (none) I have tried using php5217. I tried putting php.ini in c:\windows. I tried creating the PHPRC envrionment variable and pointing it to c:\php358. Every time I have the same problem. PHP does not find or load the ini file. If I run: c:\php358\php -c php.ini -info Then it will load the file. But I shouldn't have to do this for PHP to find the file in the same directory, in the Windows directory, or using the environment variable, so I'm stumped. When I try to run PHP from IIS I get a 500 error and I can only assume at this time it is because it can't find and load the php.ini file correctly. I see similar questions on here, but none seem to address the problem I am having.

• Front-end structure of large scale Django project

  Few days ago, I started to work in new company. Before me, all front-end and backend code was written by one man (oh my...). As you know, Django app contains two main directories for front-end: /static - for static(public) files and /templates - for django templates Now, we have large application with more than 10 different modules like: home, admin, spanel, mobile etc. This is current structure of files and directories: FIRST - /static directory. As u can see, it is mixed directories with some named like modules, some contains global libs. one more: SECOND - /templates directory. Some directories named like module with mixed templates, some depends on new version =), some used only in module, but placed globally. and more: I think, that this is ugly, non-maintable, put-in-stress structure! After some time spend, i suggest to use this scheme, that based on module-structure. At first, we have version directories, used for save full project backup, includes: /DEPRECATED directory - for old, unused files and /CURRENT (Active) directory, that contains production version of project. I think it's right, because we can access to older or newer version files fast and easy. Also, we are saved from broken or wrong dependencies between different versions. Second, in every version we have standalone modules and global module. Every module contains own /static and /templates directories. This structure used to avoid broken or wrong dependencies between different modules, because every module has own js app, css tables and local images. Global module contains all libraries, main stylesheets and images like logos or favicon. I think, this structure is much better to maintain, update, refactoring etc. My question is: How do you think, is this scheme better than current? Can this scheme live, or it is not possible to implement this in Django app?

• Parsing scripts that use curly braces

  To get an idea of what I'm doing, I am writing a python parser that will parse directx .x text files. The problem I have deals with how the files are formatted. Although I'm writing it in python, I'm looking for general algorithms for dealing with this sort of parsing. .x files define data using templates. The format of a template is template_name { [some_data] } The goal I have is to parse the file line-by-line and whenever I come across a template, I will deal with it accordingly. My initial approach was to check if a line contains an opening or closing brace. If it's an open brace, then I will check what the template name is. Now the catch here is that the open brace doesn't have to occur on the same line as the template name. It could just as well be template_name { [some_data] } So if I were to use my "open brace exists" criteria, it won't work for any files that use the latter format. A lot of languages also use curly braces (though I'm not sure when people would be parsing the scripts themselves), so I was wondering if anyone knows how to accurately get the template name (or in some other languages, it could just as well be a function name, though there aren't any keywords to look for)

• Help on TileMapRenderer

  In my project, I'm trying to render a map using TileMapRenderer. But it doesn't show anything when I render it. But when I use some other files from a tutorial they are rendered correctly. When debugging my TileAtlas instance shows the size as 0. I have used Texture Packer UI for packing the images. Comparing with the tutorial's files, I can see that the index starts from 1 in my file and 0 in the tutorial. • Can&rsquo;t eject external USB or Firewire drive in Windows 7

  As a SharePoint developer, I work a lot with Virtual Machines (presently using Windows Virtual PC, with Windows 7).  I’m using these VMs with my laptop, and in order to get better performance, I’ve moved them to external hard drives.  (These drives have faster RPMs, larger caches, and a larger capacity, than the internal drive.)  I have one large external drive at home, another similar drive at the office, and a small, slow portable drive that I carry with me. So, at the end of each day at the office, I copy the files from the external drive to my portable drive and then once I get home, I copy them from the portable to the larger external drive I leave at home.  I do this for a couple of reasons: so I can work at home and secondly, so I have backup copies.  (Often, I feel like I’m in the movie “Office Space” when copying the files before I leave the office). Anyway, after the files are copied, I safely eject the external drives, and then hibernate my laptop.  I’ve been doing this for over a year now, but within the last couple of months I started to have issues disconnecting the drives.  Intermittently, some application/process would have a lock on some file on the drive that would keep Windows from safely ejecting it. After looking into it, I found that it was actually the Windows search service that was accessing the drive! Since I wasn’t using Windows search to look for stuff on these drives, I removed them as locations to index. To do this in Windows 7, you need to go to Indexing Options (just type “Indexing” into the search box in the Start menu…).  One of the choices displayed will then be Indexing Options, so click on it and you should then see a window similar to this:   Click on the Modify button and you’ll see this window: Notice the different drives listed above.  My “FreeAgent XTreme (F:)” drive was checked for some reason, which was causing the indexing service to scan the drive looking for new files to make available in the search results.  Ever since I unchecked this box, I’ve been able to safely eject the drive.

• How to port email from evolution to thunderbird?

  I updated ubuntu to 11.10 using the update notification. I am also switching from Xubuntu to ubuntu - gnome interface. I have been using evolution for years and would like to port the emails to thunderbird. I have looked at the similar questions with no luck and the thunderbird help on manually importing. Most of these assume that the evolution file structure is similar to the evolution file structure. When I set up thunderbird it seems to have imported the contacts from evolution (and actually removed them from evolution. However no mail got transferred. I found the evolution mail in ~/.local/share/evolution/mail/local . this has folders.db and 3 directories - cur ,tmp, and new. then there are the hidden files and directories. Each directory has three related files with extensions .cmeta, .ibex.index, and .ibex.index.data. Then all the directories had files that seem to contain the individual messages. I have not looked at rhyme or reason to the file numbering/naming scheme. is there a nice way to import these files?

  I have followed various recommendations from the Ubuntu Documentation to create a bootable Ubuntu USB flash drive using the 12.04.1 Alternate install ISO-file for 64-bit PC. But the integrity test of the USB stick has failed and I do not see why. These are the steps I have made: Download of the 12.04.1 Alternate install ISO-file for 64-bit PC (ubuntu-12.04.1-alternate-amd64.iso) from http://releases.ubuntu.com/12.04.1/, as well as the MD5, SHA-1 and SHA-256 hash files and related PGP signatures Verification of the data integrity of the ISO-file using the MD5, SHA-1 and SHA-256 hash files, after having verified the hash files using the related PGP signature files (see e.g. https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HowToSHA256SUM and https://help.ubuntu.com/community/VerifyIsoHowto) Creation of a bootable USB stick using Ubuntu's Startup Disk Creator program (see http://www.ubuntu.com/download/help/create-a-usb-stick-on-ubuntu) Boot of my computer using the newly made 12.04.1 Alternate install on USB stick Selection of the option "Check disc for defects" (see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/CDIntegrityCheck) Steps 1, 2, 3 and 4 went without any problem or error messages. However, step 5 ended with an error message entitled "Integrity test failed" and with the following content: The ./install/netboot/ubuntu-installer/amd64/pxelinux.cfg/default file failed the MD5 checksum verification. Your CD-ROM or this file may have been corrupted. I have experienced the same (might only be similar since I have no exact notes) error message in previous attempts using the 12.04 (i.e. not the maintenance release) Alternate install ISO-file. I have in these cases tried to install anyway and have so far not experienced any problems to my knowledge. Is failed integrity check described above a serious error? What is the solution? Or can it be ignored without further problems?

  The sys.dm_io_virtual_file_stats Dynamic Management Function is used to return IO statistic information about each of your database files on your server. As input parameters, this function takes a database_id and a file_id. If you want to return IO statistic information for all files, you can simply pass in NULL values for both of these. Let’s have a look at this function  and examine its results: SELECT db_name(database_id) DatabaseName, * FROM sys.dm_io_virtual_file_stats(NULL, NULL) The first column in the result set is the DatabaseName which is just a column I created using the db_name() system function and the database_id column from this function. Next we have a file_id which represent the ID for the file, whether it be a data file or transaction log file. The ‘sample_ms’ column represents the total time in milliseconds that the instance has been up and running. Next we have the ‘num_of_reads’, ‘num_of_bytes_read’, and later ‘num_of_writes’, and ‘num_of_bytes_written’. These columns represent the number of reads or writes and number of bytes read or written against a particular file. These columns are beneficial when determining how often a particular file is being accessed. The ‘io_stall_read_ms’ and io_stall_write_ms’ columns each represent the the total time in milliseconds that users have had to wait for reads or writes against a file respectively. The ‘io_stall’ column is the sum of both read and write io stalls. The ‘size_on_disk_bytes’ column represents the size of the respective file on your disk subsystem. Lastly the ‘file_handle’ column is simply the Windows File handle. This Dynamic Management Function is useful when you are needing to analyze your database files for the purposes of segregating high IO databases. This DMF gives you a good view of which of your database files are being accessed the most and which ones may be generating the largest IO stalls. These could be your best candidates for moving into separate IO channels. • Notes on Oracle BPM PS6 Adaptive Case Management

I had put together some notes to help me gain a better understanding of the context of the PS6 BPM Case Management. Hopefully, this along with the other resources will enable you to gain a clear picture of the flexibility of this feature. Oracle BPM PS6 release includes Case Management capability. This initial release aims to provide: Case Management Framework Integration of Case Management with BPM & SOA suite It is best to regard the current PS6 case management feature as a case management framework. The framework provides the building blocks for creating a case management system that is fully integrated into Oracle BPM suite. As of the current PS6 release, no UI tooling exists to help manage cases or the case lifecycle. Mark Foster has written a good blog which outlines Case Management within PS6 in the following link. I wanted to provide more context on Case Management from my perspective in this blog. PS6 Case Management - High level View BPM PS6 includes “Case” as a first class component in a SOA Suite composite. The Case components (added to the SOA Composite) are created when a BPM process is assigned to a case in JDveloper. The SOA Case component is defined and configured within JDevloper, which allows us to specify the case data structures and metadata such as stakeholders, outcomes, milestones, document stores etc. "Activities" are associated with a case, and become available to be executed via the case apis. Activities are BPM processes, Human Activities or Java call outs. The PS6 release includes some additional database tables to store the case metadata and case instance data (data object, comments, etc…). These new tables are created within the SOA_INFRA schema and the documents associated with that case into a document repository that is configured with the case. One of the main features of Case Management is the control of the case logic through case events and case business rules. A PS6 Case has an associated business rule component, which can be configured to control the availability and execution of activities within the case. The business rules component is able to act upon events that the PS6 Case Management framework generates during the lifecycle of that case. Events are fired during the lifetime of the case (e.g. Case created, activity started, activity ended, note added, document uploaded.) Internal Case state The internal state of a case is represented by the diagram below. This shows the internal states and the transition paths for a Case from one state to the next Each transition in state will create an event that can be enacted upon via the Case rules engine. The internal case state lifecycle is defined as follows Defining a case A Case is created and defined as a component of a JDeveloper BPM project. When you create a Case as part of a BPM project, JDeveloper, creates the following components within the SCA composite: Case component Case component interfaces (WSDL etc) Case Rules component (Oracle Business Rules) Adds the Case Component and Case Rules Component to the BPM SOA composite Case Configuration The following section gives a high level overview of the items that can be configured for a BPM Case. Case Activities A Case is associated with a set of activities that are to be performed as part of that Case. Case activities can be: SOA Human Tasks BPM processes Custom Task (Java Class) Case activities are created from pre-existing BPM process or human tasks, which, once defined, can be configured additionally as Case activities in JDeveloper and made available within the lifecycle of a case. I've described the following configurable components of a case (very!) briefly as: Milestones Milestones are (optional) user defined logical milestones that can be achieved within a case. No activities are associates with a milestone, but milestone attainment can be programmatically set and events raised when milestones are reached Outcomes User defined status of a completed case. An event is fired when an outcome is attained. Case Data Defines the data that will be stored with a case XML schemas define the data that is stored with the case. Case Documents Defines the location of documents that are attached to a case (e.g. WebCenter Content) User Defined Events Optional user defined events that can be fired or captured to drive case processing rules Stakeholders Defines the actors who can participate in the case (roles, users, groups) Defines permissions for individual case permissions (read case, create document etc…) Business Rules Business rules are the main component controlling the flow of a Case Each case has an associated business ruleset Rules are fired on receiving Case events (or User defined events) Life cycle events Milestone events Activity events Data events Document events Comment events User event Managing the Case Managing the lifecycle of a case is achieved in two ways: Managing case logic with Business Rules Managing the case lifecycle via the Case APIs. A BPM Case can be viewed as a set of case data & documents along with the activities that can be performed within a case and also the case lifecycle state expressed as milestones and internal lifecycle state. The management of the case life is achieved though both the configuration of business rules and the “manual” interaction with a case instance through the Case APIs. Business Rules and Case Events A key component within the Case management framework is the event model. The BPM Case Management solution internally utilizes Oracle EDN (Event Delivery Network) to publish and subscribe to events generated by the Case framework. Events are generated by the Case framework on each of the processes and stages that a case instance will travel on its lifetime. The following case events are part of the BPM Case: Life cycle events Milestone events Activity events Data events Document events Comment events User event The Case business rules are configured to listen for these events, and business logic can be coded into the Case rules component to enact upon an event being received. Case API & Interaction Along with the business rules component, Cases can be managed via the Case API interfaces. These interfaces allow for the building of custom applications to integrate into case management framework. The API’s allow for updating case comments & documents, executing case activities, updating milestones etc. As there is no in built case management UI functions within the PS6 release, Cases need to be managed via a custom built UI, interacting with selected case instances, launching case activities, closing cases etc. (There is expected to be a UI component within subsequent releases) Logical Case Flow The diagram below is intended to depict a logical view of the case steps for a typical case. A UI or other service calls the Case interface to create a Case instance The case instance is created & database data inserted A lifecycle event is raised indicating a case activity (created) event The case business rules capture the event and decide on an action to take Additionally other parties can subscribe to Case events via EDN The business rules may handle the event, e.g. configured to execute a case activity on case creation event The BPM/Human Workflow/Custom activity is executed A case activity event is raised on the execute activity A case work UI or business service can inspect the case instance and call other actions to progress that case, such as: Execute activity Add Note Add document Add case data Update Milestone Raise user defined event Suspend case Resume case Close Case Summary Having had a little time to play around with the APIs and the case configuration, I really like the flexibility and power of combining Oracle Business Rules and the BPM Case Management event model. Creating something this flexible and powerful without BPM Case Management would take a lot of time and effort. This is hopefully going to save my customers a lot of time and effort! • A Model for Planning Your Oracle BPM 10g Migration by Kris Nelson

  As the Oracle SOA Suite and BPM Suite 12c products enter beta, many of our clients are starting to discuss migrating from the Oracle 10g or prior platforms. With the BPM Suite 11g, Oracle introduced a major change in architecture with a strong focus on integration with SOA and an entirely new technology stack. In addition, there were fresh new UIs and a renewed business focus with an improved Process Composer and features like Adaptive Case Management. While very beneficial to both technology and the business, the fundamental change in architecture does pose clear migration challenges for clients who have made investments in the 10g platform. Some of the key challenges facing 10g customers include: Managing in-process instance migration and running multiple process engines Migration of User Interfaces and other code within the environment that may not be automated Growing or finding technical staff with both 10g and 12c experience Managing migration projects while continuing to move the business forward and meet day-to-day responsibilities As a former practitioner in a mixed 10g/11g shop, I wrestled with many of these challenges as we tried to plan ahead for the migration. Luckily, there is migration tooling on the way from Oracle and several approaches you can use in planning your migration efforts. In addition, you already have a defined and visible process on the current platform, which will be invaluable as you migrate.  A Migration ModelThis model presents several options across a value and investment spectrum. The goal of the AVIO Migration Model is to kick-start discussions within your company and assist in creating a plan of action to take advantage of the new platform. • Installing Multiple OWB Patches

  When an OUBI bug requires a fix to the Oracle Warehouse Builder (OWB) code, the fix is delivered as an MDL export file that will need to be imported and deployed in OWB. If more than one bug is being patched, then a recent question came in that asked if it would be possible to import one after the next, and then do the deploy steps once? The answer is Yes, all of the imports can be done before any of objects are deployed. Once all of the objects have been deployed, then the TCL scripts that need to be rerun can be run, and then the objects that were changed can be deployed. The order that the MDL files are loaded does not matter unless the same object is in two or more MDL files. In that case, the latest MDL file should be loaded last. For example, if two MDL files both contain changes to the SPLMAP_F_RECENT_CREW mapping, and one was created on January 2, 2009 and the second one was created on March 14, 2009, then the January 2 file should be loaded first and the March 14 file should be loaded second. Note that if the MDL files are always loaded in the order that they were created by Release Services, then this will work correctly.
