Basically temp is a polynomial (I'm representing it as an array) and v is an integer (say 4 or 8), so what exactly does temp = 2-temp mod v equate to in normal language? How should i implement that line in my code. Can someone give me an example. The above algorithm is for computing Inverse polynomials for NTRUEncrypt key generation.   • webserver horrible slow, sometimes incredible fast

    i am running a small community ( 6000+ Members ) on a non-virtual 64-bit ubuntu 11.04 system. I am not a Linux-pro, not even advanced, i just tried to setup a webserver, which does nothing special actually. Delivering some dynamic PHP and RoR websites is its task. So it might be that my configuration files do look horrible bad. Also, i might use the wrong vocabulary, so in doubt, please ask. Having a current all-time record of 520 registered users (board-accounts, no system-users) online at same time, average server-load is about 2.0 - 5.0. Meantime (~250 users) average server load value is at about 0.4 - 0.8, sometimes, on some expensive searches a bit higher. everything fine. From time to time however, the load increases up to 120 (120.0, not 12.0 ;) ). In this time, its hard to even connect via SSH, but when i reach the server, and use top/htop/iotop to see whats happening, i cannot identify any process causing high CPU load. iotop tells me about a current reading/writing speed of about approx. 70kb/s, which is quite equal to power-off i think. Memory-Usage is max. at ~ 12GB of 16GB, so swap remains empty. now the odd (at least for me:) waiting some minutes ( since i always get a bit into a panic when this happens, it feels like 5 minutes, but i suppose its more like 20-30 minutes) and the server is back to normal. everything continues as normal. another odd fact: when i run hdparm -tT /dev/sda, i get answer like: /dev/sda: Timing cached reads: 7180 MB in 2.00 seconds = 3591.13 MB/sec Timing buffered disk reads: 348 MB in 3.02 seconds = 115.41 MB/sec when i run the same command while the server is "frozen", the answer is like /dev/sda: <- takes about 5 minutes until this line appears Timing cached reads: 7180 MB in 2.00 seconds = 3591.13 MB/sec <- 5 more minutes Timing buffered disk reads: 348 MB in 3.02 seconds = 115.41 MB/sec <- another 5 minutes so the values are the same, but the quoted time is completely wrong. using time command as prefix also tells me that ~ 15 minutes were used. I searched in dmesg, /var/log/[messages|syslog] - nothing found. /var/log/errors however tells me that: Jul 4 20:28:30 localhost kernel: [19080.671415] INFO: task php5-fpm:27728 blocked for more than 120 seconds. Jul 4 20:28:30 localhost kernel: [19080.671419] "echo 0 /proc/sys/kernel/hung_task_timeout_secs" disables this message. multiple times. now that message does tell me that php5-fpm task was blocked or did block ? - but not if that is the cause or just one of the results of that "freeze". Anyone? to cut the long story short, i dont know where even to start analyzing. So if you can give me any advice by looking at following specs and configs, or ask me to provide more information, i`d be glad. Specs: 6 Core AMD Phenom(tm) II X6 1055T Processor * 16 Gigabyte Ram 2x 1.5 TB Seagate ST1500DL003-9VT16L via SATA 3 via SoftwareRaid (i suppose) Services: (due to service --status-all, those with [ + ]) nginx Webserver 1.0.14 mySQL 5.1.63 Server Ruby on Rails 2.3.11 ( passenger-nginx-module ) php5-fpm 5.3.6-13ubuntu3.7 SSH ido2db Further services: default crontab + nightly backup. syslog-ng Website consists of 2 subdomains, forum. and www. where forum is a phpBB3.x PHP-Board, and www a Ruby on Rails 2.3.11 application (portal). Mini-Note: sometimes i notice that the forum is pretty slow, in contrast to the always-fast (except for this "freeze") portal. Both share the same Database, but the portal is using it read-only. The Webserver is nginx, using phusion passenger module to communicate with the ruby-application. One additional Fact: my MYSQL-database is at 12GB size. i dont know if that does matter, but mytop sometimes shows me 4-5 seconds long insert queries, some are 20-30 seconds long. Its just a feeling that i am unable to prove (because i dont know how), but when i disable the database, the freeze seems not to happen. I currently feel like running form bad to worse and back by googling for my server-problem due to immense lack of knowledge regarding server configurations. It still makes me wonder, why those problems even appear, since 250 users a time is not such a high amount, right? So my questions: whats wrong and how to fix? ;) or: what information can i provide to make the situation more clear? can you point at some critical bad configuration-line which i should consider to catch up in the documentation? are there any tools i can run to see some possible bottlenecks? any further advice? (next to: "pay someone who knows what he does" - its a private project, server costs enough already. :)) Thanks for your time and help.   • Configuration for a two machine ESXi cluster using VSA to present local storage to VMs

    I'm designing a little vSphere 5 cluster for one of our remote sites. We have some IBM x3650s that have 6x 300GB 10K RPM drives in them, along with dual quad core CPUs and 24GB RAM. Because we use HP P4500 G2s at our primary site, we have licenses available for HP P4000 VSAs. I thought that this would be the perfect opportunity to use them. Below is a basic drawing of what I want to accomplish: I want to run a P4000 VSA on each server and run them in a Network RAID-10 (Lefthand speak for network mirroring, think of it as RAID 1 across nodes or as an active/active storage cluster). I will then present this storage to guests that will run on this mini-cluster. It will be managed by a vCenter Server on our main site. All connections will be GbE with two dedicated to storage. Management and Data will share a pair of connections, since I don't expect there to be high load. These servers are just there to provide directory services, dhcp, printing, etc. Does anyone see anything potentially wrong with this approach? Is this the best way to do this without adding additional dedicated storage heads? Are there any pitfalls in this design, besides the lack of dedicated Data/Mgmt interfaces?

  • Any ideas out there as to how the data can be recovered from an SSD?

    A friend had some form of catastrophic failure on an HP mini 1000, unbootable. Of course there was data that wasn't backed up. I've removed the SSD and hooked it up to a ZIF 40 enclosure but can not seem to get the drive to be recognized in Windows 7. In Disk Management it displays as present, but uninitialized. Attempting to initialize it presents an error Virtual Disk Manager - "The device is not ready". There is scant information on MIE (the custom OS), so I'm not even sure what kind of file system I'm dealing with. In any case, if the filesystem is indeed some flavor other than FAT or NTFS, is this error consistent with that? Are there any creative ideas out there as to how the data can be recovered? Update: Thanks for all the suggestions! I hadn't even considered running a live cd. Unfortunately no luck with Ubuntu (live cd) or explore2fs. The zif connection seems ok (color coded green led for proper connect, orange for not). The drive can't be initialized and therefore can't be formatted, so I guess there may be some real damage. Probably needs to head to a specialist. Thanks again for the feedback, much appreciated.

  • Color Theory: How to convert Munsell HVC to RGB/HSB/HSL

    I'm looking at at document that describes the standard colors used in dentistry to describe the color of a tooth. They quote hue, value, chroma values, and indicate they are from the 1905 Munsell description of color: The system of colour notation developed by A. H. Munsell in 1905 identifies colour in terms of three attributes: HUE, VALUE (Brightness) and CHROMA (saturation) [15] HUE (H): Munsell defined hue as the quality by which we distinguish one colour from another. He selected five principle colours: red, yellow, green, blue, and purple; and five intermediate colours: yellow-red, green-yellow, blue-green, purple-blue, and red-purple. These were placed around a colour circle at equal points and the colours in between these points are a mixture of the two, in favour of the nearer point/colour (see Fig 1.). VALUE (V): This notation indicates the lightness or darkness of a colour in relation to a neutral grey scale, which extends from absolute black (value symbol 0) to absolute white (value symbol 10). This is essentially how ‘bright’ the colour is. CHROMA (C): This indicates the degree of divergence of a given hue from a neutral grey of the same value. The scale of chroma extends from 0 for a neutral grey to 10, 12, 14 or farther, depending upon the strength (saturation) of the sample to be evaluated. The chroma and value are both indicated by a value from 1 to 4. A1 being lighter than A4, but A4 being more saturated than A1. If placed in order of value, i.e. brightness, the order from brightest to darkest would be: A1, B1, B2, A2, A3, D2, C1, B3, D3, D4, A3.5, B4, C2, A4, C3, C4 The exact values of Hue, Value and Chroma for each of the shades is shown below (16) So my question is, can anyone convert Munsell HVC into RGB, HSB or HSL? Finally, it says that Choma/Saturation can range from 0..10 ...or even higher - which makes it sound like an arbitrary scale. So can anyone convert Munsell HVC to HSB or HSL, or better yet, RGB?

  • Blackberry - Listfield layout question

    I'm having an interesting anomaly when displaying a listfield on the blackberry simulator: The top item is the height of a single line of text (about 12 pixels) while the rest are fine. Does anyone know why only the top item is being drawn this way? Also, when I add an empty venue in position 0, it still displays the first actual venue this way (item in position 1). Not sure what to do. Thanks for any help.   • Can you "swap" the Sysprep answer file in Windows 7

    I have a load of new Lenovo laptops which I am due to distribute in my company. We are distributed in multiple locations and I want to ship the laptops "boxed" and untouched by IT hand for distribution. We are using LANDesk to do all the software distribution and provisioning, but are currently falling at the first hurdle as when booted, the laptops kick into the Lenovo mini-setup wizard. I assume this is because they have been sysprepped at Lenovo. In order to keep with our (almost) zero touch strategy I want the users to PXE boot into a PE of some sort, which will run a script on startup which replaces the sysprep answer file with one of my own. (i.e. prepopulated with product key, company info etc.) and then reboot to complete Sysprep. The plan is that this will run, and then install the LANDesk agent as a post-sysprep task, which in turn will complete the provisioning. Anyone have any experience / know any pitfalls to look out for / can suggest a suitable, PXE-bootable PE environment? Apologies for the verbosity of the question - it takes a bit of explaining!     Today I installed FreeBSD 9.0 PPC on my Mac mini G4 with 40GB HDD. During installation, (using the FSBD utility 'gpart') I have allocated a total of about 23GB for FreeBSD leaving 17GB totally free (neither partitioned, nor formatted) for a later Linux installation. Now, when try to install Linux (Ubuntu 10.10 PPC) on the remaining 17GB, the Linux/Ubuntu installer (or Linux's Disk Utility for the same matter) wants presumably a linux partition and when I try to add a (Linux) partition on that area using Linux DU it fails with this message: Error creating partition: helper exited with exit code 1: In part_add_partition: device_file=/dev/hda, start=23363101696, size=16644660224, type= Entering MS-DOS parser (offset=0, size=40007761920) No MSDOS_MAGIC found Exiting MS-DOS parser Entering Apple parser Mac MAGIC found, block_size=512 map_count = 17 Leaving Apple parser Apple partition table detected containing partition table scheme = 2 got it Error: The partition's data region doesn't occupy the entire partition. ped_disk_new() failed Now, I'm trying to add a Linux partition on FreeBSD running on the harddisk. I use seemingly most suitable tool for this job: gpart. Here is the 'gpart show ad0' But it seems unable to add a Linux partition because "man gpart" doesn't list either "Linux Partition" nor anything like Ext2 or Ext3/Ext4. The closest thing to Linux Partition in gpart is "mbr" but it doesn't work: #gpart add -t mbr ado So, how to add properly a Linux Partition on FreeBSD? Thanks.

    I have a div, that holds a div. like this: <div id='reportHolder' class='column'> <div id='report'> </div> </div> Within the inner div, I add a bunch (7-12) of pairs of a and div elements, like this: <h4><a>Heading1</a></h4> <div> ...content here....</div> The total size of the content, is maybe 200k. Each div just contains a fragment of HTML. After I add all the content, I then create an accordion. like this: $('#report').accordion({collapsible:true, active:false}); This all works fine. The problem is, when I try to clear or remove the report div, it takes a looooooong time, and I get 3 or 4 popups asking "Do you want to stop running this script?" I have tried several ways: option 1: $('#report').accordion('destroy'); $('#report').remove(); $("#reportHolder").html("<div id='report'> </div>"); option 2: $('#report').accordion('destroy'); $('#report').html(''); $("#reportHolder").html("<div id='report'> </div>"); option 3: $('#report').accordion('destroy'); $("#reportHolder").html("<div id='report'> </div>"); No matter what, it hangs for a long while. The call to accordion('destroy') seems to not be the source of the delay. It's the erasure of the html content within the report div. EDIT - fixed typo. ps: this happens on FF3.5 as well as IE8 . Questions: What is taking so long? How can I remove content more quickly?

    I have recently bought Philips SHB6110. Extract from the 13th page of manual: Therefore you can connect your Bluetooth stereo headset. with a Bluetooth stereo enabled phone to both listen to music and lead calls, or with a Bluetooth phone that does not support Bluetooth stereo (A2DP) to lead calls and at the same time to a Bluetooth audio device (Bluetooth enabled MP3 player, Bluetooth audio adapter etc.) to listen to music. Make sure to pair the phone first with your Bluetooth headset, then turn both the phone and headset off to then pair the Bluetooth audio device. With the SwitchStream feature you can listen to music and monitor your calls at the same time. Even while listening to music, you will hear a ring tone when receiving a call and can switch to the call simply by tapping the button. The manual however doesn't specify how do I connect to both device at the same time. I use Toshiba Satellite Pro P300-1CG laptop with Belkin Mini Bluetooth Adapter and Nokia N95 phone. Operating system is Windows 7 64-bit and I have Skype installed. Both phone and compute can be used for listening to music and talking on the phone (on PC via Skype). Best solution would be if I could connect to PC and phone as the same time and monitor calls both mobile and Skype calls while listening music from Winamp. If that is not possible, then I would like at least to be able to listen music from PC, while monitoring calls from mobile. So, please tell me how do I connect both PC and phone to headphones?

    I'm having an issue getting Appstats to work correctly. Using /appstats or /appstats/stats ends up in an infinite loop that keeps redirecting back to /appstats/stats.     During our application startup, we are making a call to ::LookupAccountSid(). When I build targeting the x86 architecture, this call is nearly instantaneous. However, when I target x64 (debug or release), the call generally takes over 40s to complete. Since this is occurring during application startup, the result is fairly unpleasant as it will appear to the user that the application is not launching. I am running Windows 7 Professional 64-bit on a Dell Studio XPS 16 (Intel Core i7 Q 720). Our application is a native Windows application written in C++.   • Cisco SA520 to Adtran 1234 no DHCP transfer

    I am trying to set up a Cisco SA520 to run DHCP on my network. I have a vendor provided switch, the Adtran 1234, and it provides DHCP for our phone systems on VLAN 200. I do not have access to the Adtran, but the vendor gave me a IP on port 1 for WAN and said port 2 should be for the "trust" side should go. I did setup a mini lab where, Adtran 1 went to SA520 WAN port, and SA520 trust 1 went to my laptop. Everything worked fine, I could ping and get internet using the DHCP scope I put on the SA520. I then unplugged my computer from SA520 trust 1 and plugged it into Adtran 2. I plugged my computer into Adtran 23 and I dont get DHCP or even a link light. If I restart my machine, I get a brief link and then it dies once the machine boots. I have tried several ports on the Adtran and none seem to work. Different cables as well. However, when I plug a phone into the Adtran, the phone boot immediately and shows link. Thoughts?

    A layer 2 Ethernet frame is sent with a source and destination MAC address. Given a 100Base-TX (copper) trunk between two Cisco switches, I can do a "show interface fa 0/0" on S1 to see the MAC address assigned to the trunking interface, then go to Switch2 and do a "show mac address-table" and find the MAC address of the S1 fa 0/0 interface as a dynamically learned MAC in the table. Given a similar setup with a 1000Base-X (fiber GBIC) trunk, the MAC address shown in "show interface gi 0/0" on S1 does not show up in the MAC address-table of S2. Everything I can find online indicates that 1000Base-X uses largely the same layer 2 format as copper connections. There's some slight alterations - minimum frame size is slightly larger - but the fundamentals of the frame structure appear to be the same, including transmission with a source and destination L2 address. Why doesn't the address of gi 0/0 show up in the MAC address table of the connection switch? The only thing which seems to make sense would be that the GBIC has its own MAC address, almost as if its acting as a mini 2-port switch or hub, with the switch-assigned MAC address showing up on the interface connection and a different MAC address assigned to the fiber side. If this is the case, is there any way to see the GBIC MAC address on the switch? (I've tried to look up the details in IEEE 802.3z but it doesn't seem to be available without an IEEE membership or purchasing the standard. I find the base 802.3 PDFs for download, but not 802.3z.)

  • CSS Background-Images Loading after HTML Images (Involves Javascript)

    I threw together a quick little microsite that you can see at http://monterraauction.com. If you don't have a super-fast connection (and nothing's cached), the very last items to load are the background-images that are used for CSS image-text replacement (primarily, that h1#head at the top, with a 7kb background image). Nothing debilitating, but it looks slightly awkward. And I'm asking this question as a matter of curiosity more than anything else ;) Also, please note that this occurs in Firefox, but not Chrome. Now, underneath the h1#head I have a jquery.cycle.lite-powered slideshow in div#photo. In the HTML markup there are a total of 13, heavy image files that make up each of the slides. If I remove all but the first slide, then the problem goes away! So the CSS background-images are loading after...those HTML images are done? But here's what's confusing: I check it out in YSlow...the CSS background-images have a much lower response time than all of the slides in #photo. Right after all the JS files finish loading, in fact. So why aren't they showing up first? I tried $('#photo img:last-child').load(function() { alert('Locked and Loaded!')});, but the background-images pop up a while before the alert does, so I'm assuming it's not waiting until the last slide has loaded (admittedly I'm a bit of JS noob so maybe I'm just making a wrong assumption). I also tried commenting out all the jquery.cycle.lite stuff, so that I knew I didn't have any JS manipulating the DOM elements in #photo, but that wasn't the problem. I tried putting all the JS at the bottom of the document, right before </body>, but that didn't work. Lastly, I tried turning off javascript, and of course the css background-image loads way before the images in #photo, so it's definitely a JS thing (amirite?) I guess the obvious solution here is to mark the slides up as LINKS rather than IMGs, and have Javascript insert those 12 extra slideshow images after the DOM is ready--users without javascript shouldn't need to download the extra images anyways. But again, I'm curious: Why does removing the extra HTML images from within #photo solve the problem? And why are the CSS background-images showing up after the HTML images have loaded, even though YSlow says the css background-images loaded first? Seeing as how it happens in FF but not Chrome, is it simply a browser issue? I appreciate any insight you guys could give me!

When I try to pull the partial from a rake task, I get the dreaded "Called id for nil, which would mistakenly be 4" error, which usually means that my locals hash has not been properly set into the partial. What does running Word on server implies? In order to get the Word example running, do the following on the server side. Worked for me... 1. Click START--RUN and enter "dcomcnfg" 2.     I have music playing program made using PySide which uses Phonon to playback audio. I updated to MacOS X Mavericks a few days ago, which meant I needed to reinstall PySide. I'm not sure which of these actions has caused this, but now whenever I try to create a Phonon MediaObject I get a Segmentation Fault: 11 from Python. It's not just in my program, it happens when trying to create a MediaObject in Python without any other actions.
