• Windows Recovery from Grub messed up my computer?

  Ok so I'm a noob when it comes to Operating Systems and I think I really messed up this time. So I have a laptop that dual boots Windows 7 and Linux Mint 11. I was trying to boot into Windows 7 but it would just have a black screen with a blinking cursor. So I turned off my computer and tried again. Still a black screen with a cursor. So I thought "well it must be broken somehow and I remembered seeing something like 'Windows Recovery' from the boot menu so I should try it." So when I turned on my computer a third time I selected 'Windows Recovery' (Something like that I can't remember exactly what it was called). After I had selected that I got a white Windows window that said in big red letters "ERROR". I turned off my computer again a turned it back on expecting the Grub menu to reappear. I was wrong. Instead I am greeted with error: no such partition grub rescue. Then I put in a live CD for ubuntu 11.04 and tried looking at my partitions using the disk manager. Looking at my partitions I notice that there isn't a Linux partition anymore and in its place is a unallocated space partition yet the Linux Swap partition is still there. My windows partition is still fine and I can access the files in it. If you understand what has happened, is there anyway I can get my files back? I don't care about reinstalling the OS again. I just want those files that are in the Linux Mint partition.

• Partitions for dual boot install with Windows

  Following is the layout of the current partitions of my single hard drive viewed from Windows 7: C: has Windows 7 system files and my personal data; Q: for Lenovo recovery; SYSTEM_DRV: for Windows boot files; My goals are: to create another partition D: for my personal data, and dedicate C: for Windows system files and applications only. to install Ubuntu alongside Windows. D: will be shared between the two OSes. My questions are: Is it correct that the free space generated from shrinking C: will only be able to create an extended partition, since there are already 3 primary partitions? So must D: be one logical partition on the extended partition, just as the partitions for Ubuntu will be? Will this be bad sometime? If yes, other better solutions? What are the good utilities to accomplish the partition tasks? Can Ubuntu installer solely handle them? Or better to have some of the jobs done in Windows with some recommended softwares?   I made a small introduction to RequireJS via some of the many cool new RequireJS features in NetBeans IDE. I believe RequireJS, and the modularity and encapsulation and loading solutions that it brings, provides the tools needed for creating large JavaScript applications, i.e., enterprise JavaScript applications. &amp;amp;lt;span id=&amp;amp;quot;XinhaEditingPostion&amp;amp;quot;&amp;amp;gt;&amp;amp;lt;/span&amp;amp;gt; (Sorry for the wobbly sound in the above.) An interesting comment by my colleague John Brock on the above: One other advantage that RequireJS brings, is called lazy loading of resources. In your first example, everyone one of those .js files is loaded when the first file is loaded in the browser. By using the require() call in your modules, your application will only load the javascript modules when they are actually needed. It makes for faster startup in large applications. You could show this by showing the libraries that are loaded in the Network Monitor window. So I did as suggested: Click the screenshot to enlarge it and notice how the Network Monitor is helpful in the context of RequireJS troubleshooting.

• Fast, accurate 2d collision

  I'm working on a 2d topdown shooter, and now need to go beyond my basic rectangle bounding box collision system. I have large levels with many different sprites, all of which are different shapes and sizes. The textures for the sprites are all square png files with transparent backgrounds, so I also need a way to only have a collision when the player walks into the coloured part of the texture, and not the transparent background. I plan to handle collision as follows: Check if any sprites are in range of the player Do a rect bounding box collision test Do an accurate collision (Where I need help) I don't mind advanced techniques, as I want to get this right with all my requirements in mind, but I'm not sure how to approach this. What techniques or even libraries to try. I know that I will probably need to create and store some kind of shape that accurately represents each sprite minus the transparent background. I've read that per pixel is slow, so given my large levels and number of objects I don't think that would be suitable. I've also looked at Box2d, but haven't been able to find much documentation, or any examples of how to get it up and running with SFML.

• Most efficient way to store this collection of moduli and remainders?

  I have a huge collection of different moduli and associated with each modulus a fairly large list of remainders. I want to store these values so that I can efficiently determine whether an integer is equivalent to any one of the remainders with respect to any of the moduli (it doesn't matter which, I just want a true/false return). I thought about storing these values as a linked-list of balanced binary trees, but I was wondering if there is a better way? EDIT Perhaps a little more detail would be helpful. As for the size of this structure, it will be holding about 10s of thousands of (prime-1) moduli and associated to each modulus will be a variable amount of remainders. Most moduli will only have one or two remainders associated to it, but a very rare few will have a couple hundred associated to it. This is part of a larger program which handles numbers with a couple thousand (decimal) digits. This program will benefit more from this table being as large as possible and being able to be searched quickly. Here's a small part of the dataset where the moduli are in parentheses and the remainders are comma separated: (46) k = 20 (58) k = 15, 44 (70) k = 57 (102) k = 36, 87 (106) k = 66 (156) k = 20, 59, 98, 137 (190) k = 11, 30, 68, 87, 125, 144, 182 (430) k = 234 (520) k = 152, 282 (576) k = 2, 11, 20, 29, 38, 47, 56, 65, 74, ...(add 9 each time), 569 I had said that the moduli were prime, but I was wrong they are each one below a prime.

• How can i compare Audio, what programming language should i use

  I have 2 audio files that are from almost the same source. But at some points there shifted a bit. Also the codecs does not match. I would like to make a program that takes a sample 2 - 4 seconds. And looks for it in the other file. (Most of the time it's not shifted more than 30 seconds). Than take the time and store it, Go ahead for a few seconds take a sample and find it again. This way i want to create a file where i can see on what points the file is shifted. For people who are more interested in what i want. I have a audio/video file speech and subtitles. But i have same speech from different sources with differs a bit in time. And i like to make a program that can correct the subtitle time for me. Enough about the problem I looked on the Internet for ways to compare audio files. Based on what i read comparing 2 audio files isn't that easy as i had hoped. • Can't Log Into Ubuntu 12.04

  Yesterday, after turning on Ubuntu, I logged into a Gnome session. A few minutes later, I tried switching to Unity for a change. Unfortunately, the background and my desktop icons loaded, but the system bar and launcher failed to load even after several minutes. Unity had always worked fine for me. I then tried the guest account, and it worked fine on both Unity and Gnome. However, the problem with my account got worse; I couldn't log into any desktop at all anymore. I would type in my password and press enter and it would just sit there doing nothing. The computer no longer responded in any way, so I had to hold the power button and reboot. The same problem happened repeatedly. Earlier today, I tried to get on again. I found that I hadthe same problem, when I tried to log in, the computer no longer locked up, but instead flashed a black screen with theconsole output and what seemed to be an error message before returning to the log in screen. It was to quick for me to read, about 1/4-1/2 second. I'd really appreciate some help as I have some important files that are not backed up yet. I can't transfer the files to a new account, or even make a new account because I tried taking the password off my account so now I can't authenticate from the guest to perform root functions. • Using Bulk Operations with Coherence Off-Heap Storage

  Some NamedCache methods (including clear(), entrySet(Filter), aggregate(Filter, …), invoke(Filter, …)) may generate large intermediate results. The size of these intermediate results may result in out-of-memory exceptions on cache servers, and in some cases on cache clients. This may be particularly problematic if out-of-memory exceptions occur on more than one server (since these operations may be cluster-wide) or if these exceptions cause additional memory use on the surviving servers as they take over partitions from the failed servers. This may be particularly problematic with clusters that use off-heap storage (such as NIO or Elastic Data storage options), since these storage options allow greater than normal cache sizes but do nothing to address the size of intermediate results or final result sets. One workaround is to use a PartitionedFilter, which allows the application to break up a larger operation into a number of smaller operations, each targeting either a set of partitions (useful for reducing the load on each cache server) or a set of members (useful for managing client result set sizes). It is also possible to return a key set, and then pull in the full entries using that key set. This also allows the application to take advantage of near caching, though this may be of limited value if the result is large enough to result in near cache thrashing.

• Eclipse will not install Android Support Package [migrated]

  I am an experienced programmer but new to Android, hence using Eclipse for the first time. Unfortunately I cannot get my first project off the ground. I get as far trying to create the project when the following sequence happens. A screen arrives titled 'Install Dependencies' telling me that the required version is 8 and the installed version is 'Not installed' I click on the Install/Upgrade button and something must happen because Android SDK Manager pops up and I get a whole series of 'Fetching:' messages. The next screen asks me to Choose Package to Install and the only option is Android Support Library, revision 10. This doesn't bother me as I presume 10 is better than 8 so I hit the Install button. This is where it all goes wrong as I get a red message saying: File not found: C:\Program Files (X86)\Android\android-sdk\temp\support_r10.zip (Access is denied). Sure enough, when I check this folder, it is empty. Now, something must have happened as as SDK Manager did a whole lot of fetching and must have put these files somewhere. I am quite happy to find them and put them in the correct folder but the question is what is the name of the files that I am looking for?

• Very basic beginner Ruby question to do with elsif and ranges [migrated]

  I've been trying to get to grasps with Ruby (for all of an hour) and this is my first language. I've got the following code: var_comparison = 5 print "Please enter a number: " my_num = Integer(gets.chomp) if my_num > var_comparison print "You picked a number greater than 5!" elsif my_num < var_comparison print "You picked a number less than 5!" elsif my_num > 99 print "Your number is too large, man." else print "You picked the number 5!" end Clearly the interpreter has no way of distinguishing between accepting the rule 5 or 99. How do I make it so that any number between 6-99 returns "You picked a number greater than 5!", but a number 100 or greater returns "Your number is too large, man!"? Do I need to specifically state a range somehow? How would I best do that? Would it by the normal range methods e.g. if my_num 6..99 or if my_num.between(6..99) ?

• How to fix GRUB on dualboot with Windows7 and Ubuntu?

  I am a relatively recent user of Linux. I had several releases of Ubuntu installed on my laptop working in dual-boot and never had any issues. Recently, I installed openSUSE because I thought it would be necessary for an assignment at my university. It turns out it wasn't so I returned to Ubuntu and decided to burn the new .iso to a CD and install it. The problem is that during installation process I almost for sure messed up with the partitions and now, whenever I tried to load Windows 7, it will tells me that a required device is inaccessible. So, I reinstalled Ubuntu again and now all I get is that I am redirected to the GRUB menu without any warnings. I tried creating a Windows Recovery Disk but it gives me Unexpected I/O error. I suspect it is because it was downloaded from the Internet and maybe some files weren't there. I tried everything without success, so I decided to ask here, in the hope I can receive some help and also learn how to help others with it in the future. Here it is my boot info summary: http://paste.ubuntu.com/1344990/ Also, I might add, that on the boot-repair advanced options, the box repair Windows boot files is "locked", so I can't check it. EDIT: Apparentely, the box is locked, because, from what I understood after reading the boot-repair information, everything is fine with my windows boot-files... I still need some guidance though

• Should I avoid or embrace asking questions of other developers on the job?

  As a CS undergraduate, the people around me are either learning or are paid to teach me, but as a software developer, the people around me have tasks of their own. They aren't paid to teach me, and conversely, I am paid to contribute. When I first started working as a software developer co-op, I was introduced to a huge code base written in a language I had never used before. I had plenty of questions, but didn't want to bother my co-workers with all of them - it wasted their time and hurt my pride. Instead, I spent a lot of time bouncing between IDE and browser, trying to make sense of what had already been written and differentiate between expected behavior and symptoms of bugs. I'd ask my co-workers when I felt that the root of my lack of understanding was an in-house concept that I wouldn't find on the internet, but aside from that, I tried to confine my questions to lunch hours. Naturally, there were occasions where I wasted time trying to understand something in code on the internet that had, at its heart, an in-house concept, but overall, I felt I was productive enough during my first semester, contributing about as much as one could expect and gaining a pretty decent understanding of large parts of the product. I was wondering what senior developers felt about that mindset. Should new developers ask more questions to get to speed faster, or should they do their own research for themselves? I see benefits to both mindsets, and anticipate a large variety of responses, but I figure new developers might appreciate your answers without thinking to ask this question.

• how to recover lost partitions data

  I have a 2TB SATA drive that was being used as file storage on my UBUNTU computer. I was re-imaging my windows box so I used that drive to back up some files to it. I did this by taking the drive from my windows PC and putting it in my UBUNTU PC, mounted it and copied the files over. After the windows refresh I thought it would be easier to take the 2 TB drive and dock it in the external dock my Windows case has built in. Anyway it would recognize in BIOS but windows would not see it (because it was EXT3 or EXT4) so when I went into the disk manager it advised me the drive needed to be initialized. Me not thinking I initialized it as a GUID Partition table. Now it sees it as a blank drive, even in UBUNTU. I have done nothing else to write or change the drive. I was wondering if there is a qay to repair the old partitioning and get access to my files back? many thanks! EDIT: I followed the instructions in the link @kniwor sent me. • Can't boot to Windows 7 after installing Ubuntu 11.10

  Here's what happened: I have 2 HDDs. 1st HDD is partitioned like this: C - Windows 7 D* - Empty drive where I installed Ubuntu E - Personal Files F - Personal Files 2nd HDD is partitioned like this: G - Personal Files *the D partition is originally part of the C partition. I resized it (using Easus Partition Master in Windows) and defragged it prior to installing Ubuntu. I installed Ubuntu by booting to the Ubuntu Secure Remix CD, and chose the D partition to install Ubuntu. I did not create a swap drive, and I mounted the / to the D partition. I didnt know where to mount the others, so I just thought by mounting the / to D, it would be okay. After the long installation, upon rebooting, I can't access Windows AND Ubuntu. I get an infinite bootloop and eventually the choices to boot to Safe Modes, Last Known Good Configuration and Start Windows normally. After failing in all of them, I placed the CD back and ran the Boot Repair. I chose the MBR 1st, it didn't work. I then chose the GRUB 2nd and now I was able to boot to the Ubuntu I installed, but not to my Windows 7! I'm using my newly installed Ubuntu while writing this. I hope you can help me. • Salary Negotiation; How Best to Broach the Subject? [closed]

  So I have an upcoming performance review / salary increase and I am at a point in which I believe I will need to negotiate a larger raise than what is to be proposed. As I suspect this may be the case I have been reading as much information on the subject (negotiation) as possible. I work for a great company and fortunately I work under some really talented and reasonable managers. Unfortunately, I am not sure how best to bring up the subject. I don't want to sound greedy and I don't want to start off on the wrong foot. For the sake of argument, assume that I am actually worth more than I am being paid at the moment and I would like to make a counter offer for a relatively large increase (say, boss says 4%, I would like to counter with 15%. I know that seems very large, but I believe I have a case for it.) My question to you, those who are/have been on the other side of this scenario, is how should I start the conversation? What approach would make you most receptive to my plea? I've never negotiated before and I just don't want to start off on the wrong foot. My direct manager is a very straightforward individual, so sugarcoating is not necessary here, but at the same time, I don't want to seem overly aggressive or demanding. • CentOS drive mapping? [on hold]

  This is the first time I am posting on this particular StackExchange forum and I hope that I am using the right one for the present question. Briefly, this is what I need to do I am running a web service where users can, amongst other things, upload and store files on the server. What I want to do is to hive off user file storage to a different location so my server (CentOS 64 bit) can concentrate on what it does best - server side scripting and database management. As things stand all user files go into subdirectories in a folder called stash that lies above DOC_ROOT. What I would like to do is Transparently detect all attempts to read/write to stash/sub_folder and get/set file data on a remote server - ideally the latter would be one which replicates files like a CDN so they can be delivered from the closest/fastest location based on where the user's location. Even nicer would be if for all read accesses I could provide a URL that allows the user's browser to fetch the relevant file directly without having to funnel them via my server. I am a relative newbie when it comes to this sort of thing so I hope that I have phrased this question adequately well. From the little searching I done I gathered that WebDAV can be used to map drives to a different location on the web so perhaps that is a starting point. But if that will work I need to Establish how to get WebDAV up and running on my CentOS 64 bit server. Ideally, identify a service that allows this kind of file storage and provides an API I can use in my own scripting. I'd much appreciate any help with this.

• When to open source a project under development? [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: Is it OK to push my code to GitHub while it is still in early development? I've been working on a hobby project for a few months now; it's clocking in at over 15000 source lines of code. A number of people have expressed interest in joining development, and I have full intentions of going open source, since it would not be feasible for me to complete the project alone. I'm just not sure when to open-source it. For context, I've notice many successful open source projects, such as the Linux kernel, had considerable work done before they were open-sourced. In my case, I'd been planning on open-sourcing it after I complete all the underlying libraries and overall architecture. Is this a mistake; should I just release it right now? I'm worried that since certain critical underlying components haven't been finalized, if people build a large codebase around them, it will be very difficult to change or fix things later. On the other hand, it's a very large project that will require multiple developers to complete in a reasonable time. So when is the right time during development to go open source? Preferably, I'd like to hear from some folks who have started their own projects.

• I am being paid very little(imo), how can I change this? [migrated]

  I am a web developer with about 4 years of relevant work experience in my field. Recently, I went from making $30/hr working from home contracting for large companies to a full time job that only pays 40k/yr. The company I work for now is great, nice people, but a little behind the times. I joined on with very little experience in SQL development but they put me in charge of querying the DB and making reports right away, so I had to go in head first and pick up that skill right away. Which is great, I'm happy I learned more of that, and really make good time when doing SQL now. However, I'm now doing most of their advanced SQL stuff. The day I started, another employee who was running a MVC project based in Yii (which is the sole item that makes this company software) put in his two weeks. Two weeks later, I'm the only one who knows how to use, access, modify, or update this project. Its quite a large responsibility for an "entry level dev", no? I am doing highly advanced jQuery for them to modernize their forms, webpages, amongst other things, a skill that I would bet on few Entry levels being able to do as well as me. I may be wrong, but I feel that what I'm making now is not acceptable. We don't have reviews, ever, so I can't just wait for that.. so I was wondering.. do I sound justified in wanting to be paid more, and how can I make this happen?

• Installing 11.10 on flash drive failed

  This is my problem. I burned Ubuntu 11.10 iso to a CD. I was able to boot my PC with it. I plugged in my flash drive, and inserted the CD and restarted the computer to boot Ubuntu. I then chose to install Ubuntu alongside with Windows (XP prof.). Then I was able to select my flash drive as the installation location. I prepared partitons by dragging a bar and allocating the size for the Ubuntu installation, and for other files. I set 3GB for ubuntu and 1GB for other files. The pen drive was partitioned and files installed on it. After sucess I ejected the CD to restart the PC to use the new OS. When it restarted I expected to be asked to select an OS to boot. But I could only boot with Windows XP. Properties of my flash drive show its total capacity is 1GB. The partitioned 3GB is missing. How can I boot with the USB stick? How can I get my 4GB USB stick back?

  This question is regarding using STSADM command to create new site collection in Active Directory Account creation mode. My setup is like this- I have 2 virtual PCs in a Windows XP Pro SP3 host. Both VPCs are Windows Server 2003 R2. One VPC acts as the DC, DNS Server, DHCP server, has Active Directory installed and is also the Database Server. The other VPC is the domain member and it is the IIS web server, POP/SMTP server and it has WSS 3.0 installed. I created a new site using the GUI in Central Admin page. For creating a site collection under the newly created site, I needed to use the STSADM command line tool since it cannot be done from Central Admin page in Active Directory Account creation mode.   Hi all, I've "setup-a-msysgit-server-with-copssh-on-windows", following Tim Davis' guide and I was now learning how to use the git commands, following Jason Meridth's guide, and I have managed to get everything working fine, but now I can't pass the push command. I have set the server and the client on the same machine (for now), win7-x64.
