• How do I automate the handling of a problem (no network device found) in Ubuntu 10.04 w/ preseed?

  I have a preseed file that is doing some automation for an installation of Ubuntu 10.04. At the point where the network hardware is auto-detected, however, it fails to find hardware and displays a message, "No network interfaces detected". To make a long story short, I don't care if it can detect my network interface. How do I do one of the following: Skip that step alltogether. Handle the error page automagically. PS. I found somewhere where it suggested this: netcfg/no_interfaces seen true That didn't work. Thanks

• What makes Ubuntu awesome [closed]

  My question may sound stupid or inappropriate for this site in which case I apologize before hand. This thing has bothered me for quiet some time so please correct me if there is anything inappropriate: I have been using Ubuntu for past 1 year and I know how awesome it is and in what terms is it better than windows.But around 2 weeks ago some of my friends asked me to show them something on Ubuntu or tell something about Ubuntu that makes people prefer it over windows. I tried to convince them by telling things like its open-source, that most of the super-computers run on Linux, that its unaffected by virus and other stuff but they seemed unconvinced. Maybe what they we looking for was some mind-boggling feature which only Ubuntu (Linux) has. Since that day I have been thinking but yet don't have anything that will show them the true powers of Linux. Please suggest your response to such a situation as it troubles me that I am not able to explain them one thing that I myself believe in. Thank you. PS : I am not looking for a theoretical answer but would like to hear of one such application which it and only it provides.

I've tried: Protecting the foreach with if (!$backups) Protecting the Remove-Item with if (Test-Path $file -PathType Leaf) Protecting the Remove-Item with if ([IO.File]::Exists($file.FullName) -ne $true) None of these seem to work, what if the recommended way of preventing a foreach loop from being entered if the list is empty?

• How do you quantify competency in terms of time (years)?

  While looking for a job via agencies some time ago, I kept having questions from the recuitment agents or in the application forms like: How many years of experience do you have in: Oracle ASP.NET J2EE etc etc etc.... At first I answered faithfully... 5yrs, 7yrs, 2 yrs, none, few months etc etc.. Then I thought; I can be doing something shallow for 7 years and not being competent at it simply because I am just doing a minor support for a legacy system running SQL2000 which requires 10 days of my time for the past 7 years. Eventualy I declined to answers such questions. I wonder why do they ask these questions anymore. Anyone who just graduated with a computer science can claim 3 to 4 years experience in anything they 'touched' in the cirriculum, which to me can be equivalent to zero or 10 years depending how you look at it. It might hold true decades ago where programmers and IT skills are of very different nature. I might be wrong but I really doubt 'time' or 'years' are a good gauge of competency or experience anymore. Any opinion/rebuttal are welcome!

• Data model for unlockable card collection

  My game has a collection of cards (about 64) that are unlocked (one by one) provided that 4 items are collected/gained in the game. Right now the deck of cards is modeled with a plist file, like this: <plist> <dict> <key>card1</key> <dict> <key>available</key> <true/> <key>series</key> <integer>1</integer> <key>model</key> <integer>1</integer> <key>color</key> <integer>1</integer> </dict> <key>card2</key> <dict> <key>available</key> <false/> <key>series</key> <integer>1</integer> <key>model</key> <integer>1</integer> <key>color</key> <integer>2</integer> </dict> The value for the key named "available" marks if the item is locked or not. Right now I have to include the data for the items collected by the user, but including that inside the plist looks like too much hassle. What kind of structure should be more suitable for this? How do you manage a collection of unlockable items like this?

I'm very confused. e.g : many website saying "you must sysprep when deploying Windows 7 machine." is that correct? if this is correct why?

• Postfix + LDAP + Recipient Delimiter

  I'm trying to get my Postfix and LDAP-backend to accept recipent delimiters (aka address extensions). The rest of the mail system is working fine, but when an email is received with an extension (e.g. [email protected]), it tries to look up "coops+test" against the LDAP service and fails. Obviously this is wrong, and it should strip out the "+test" part. In my postfix config the string being passed to the LDAP service is "%s", per an example line below: accounts_query_filter = (&(objectClass=MailAccount)(mail=%s)(accountActive=TRUE)(delete=FALSE)) Is there a postfix variable which represents the email account minus the extension? I've found a similar post here, but no actual solution.

• Using external monitor and screen resolution?

  it might sound very basic question but i need some help. I have lenovo Ideapad y560p which offers a maximum resolution of 1366px x 768px. Now i am planning to buy an external monitor, and i short listed some FULL HD resolution monitors, but it is my understanding that even with FULL HD, i would only achieve the best resolution my laptop supports. Is it true? And also if this is the case, should i really go for an HD monitor or settle down with a lower resolution version? 2ndly, is there any way to increase resolution with simple upgrade? or it is not possible without voiding the warranty??

• Grub 2, switch os when restarting

  I dual-boot with Windows and Ubuntu. Usually, when I restart my computer, it is to switch os. Is there a way to tell it to Grub so that it preselects the right os in its menu when I restart my computer? Currently, I have the following two lines in /etc/default/grub file : GRUB_DEFAULT=saved GRUB_SAVEDEFAULT=true These lines make Grub preselects the os I just left. Maybe there is a similar way to tell Grub that I want it to preselect the os I use before the one I just left.

  Recently, in newsletters from websites, I have been seeing computers for sale from manufacturers that include an HDD and an SSD but the SSD has a small capacity like 24 GBs. I don't know if this still holds true, but I learned that when building a computer, you would want to install your OS on your fastest hard drive. I do a lot of PC gaming, so I install my OS and games on my SSD, because I learned that games and many applications make lots of system calls to the OS and performance can only be as fast as the slowest piece. Why these computers come with small capacity SSDs? Most OS's take up around 20 to 30 GBs of space, so what are the benefits of such a small SSD? Are these small size SSDs for caching? and what exactly does caching mean (what does it do and how does it help)?

• db2 tablespace size and performance impact

  Originally when we began moving to db2 LUW we ran into some issues where our tables were too big to fit into the default 4K table space. As a result of "pressure" to get it done we just went with a 32K default table space and put ALL of our tables there. What impact would that have if any? I talked to one person who said that it would possible make out database MUCH larger than it needed to be. Is that true? What about memory? Would there be any benefit to moving the smaller tables back to a 4K table space? I have looked around in forums and what not but cannot seem to find a good answer.

  The Apache documentation on IfModule states The module name argument is the file name of the module, at the time it was compiled. For example, mod_rewrite.c. ... However, Apache 2.2 seems to accept the module id too. So, these both work: <IfModule mod_filter.c> and <IfModule filter_module> Is that true for all Apache versions? Should the first version be prefered or does the second yield any benefits? I'm asking because HTML5 boilerplate uses the module id instead of the filename

  Do admins get to meet a lot of new people on a daily basis at work? And what kind of people domain do they interact with? Secondly, I've had this myth for a long time that unlike programmers, Network/System/Security Admins get locked-up in a den and juiced up late nights and early mornings. Most of the time they had to slip out of work without being noticed. How true and often does this happen for you? I understand there is no specific answer to this question as it depends on the type of working organization. But just looking out for answers from your experience. • 12.10 Quantal display issues using nvidiaXineramaInfoOverride

  After updating to 12.10 today, my xorg.conf doesn't seem to be respected by Quantal. Not sure if this is a 'bug' or whether it's just an adjustment I have to make due to changes in the OS. When logging in, it seems Ubuntu is now recognizing only one 3840x1080 screen named "Matrox" and maximizing windows spans them across both screens. In 12.04, this configuration file successfully allowed me to override the data provided by my TripleHead2Go and maximize windows to a single monitor. Any ideas or where to start on trying to debug this? • Someone to clarify /tags and /branches in SVN (subversion)?

  I created folders /tags, /branches and /trunk on SVN server. I put initial project file into /trunk. But other folders confuses me. What should I put in /tags? I see most people do not ever use this folder. Is this like a temp folder or so? As I understood, the purpose of branches is to host a different versions. So I will have /branches/myapp_v1.0.0, /branches/myapp_v1.0.1, etc. Right? If this is true, how do I "tell" subversion tool (tortoise on windows, svn on linux) to upload project files into such and such folder?

  I've been working on a game for awhile and I am developing it with RPG Maker VX. I came to a point where I needed to... I guess for lack of better explanation... Limit the key items to just 1.   Possible Duplicate: Can you help me with my software licensing issue? I recently heard that Microsoft allow you to install OEM version of windows 7 into Virtual Machine. I'm not 100% sure whether it is true or not and would like to re-confirm with you guys. FYI, I have 2 computers. Let's say "computer A" and "Computer B". I bought a copy of WIndows 7 Professional OEM edition recently and already installed it on my Computer A. I've two questions: Is it legal to install it again on a VMWare/Virtual PC on my Computer A? • Linux filesystem suggestion for MySQL with a 100% SELECT workload

  I have a MySQL database that contains millions of rows per table and there are 9 tables in total. The database is fully populated, and all I am doing is reads i.e., there are no INSERTs or UPDATEs. Data is stored in MyISAM tables. Given this scenario, which linux file system would work best? Currently, I have xfs. But, I read somewhere that xfs has horrible read performance. Is that true? Should I shift the database to an ext3 file system? Thanks

  I've just started experimenting with WPF templates vs. styles and I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong. The goal below is to alternate the colors of the options in the menu. The brand list definitely contains data. Does EditorForModel() not generically support the SelectList? Am I missing some kind of DataAnnotation? I can't seem to find any examples of SelectList usage in ViewModels that help. I'm truly stumped. This answer seems to be close, but hasn't helped.

Finally is it possible to convert every new frame into a bitmap (this is used for later processing) using BufferCB and if so how? • MVVM: Binding radio buttons to a view model?

  I have been trying to bind a group of radio buttons to a view model using the IsChecked button. After reviewing other posts, it appears that the IsChecked property simply doesn't work. I have put together a short demo that reproduces the problem, which I have included below. Here is my question: Is there a straightforward and reliable way to bind radio buttons using MVVM? Thanks. Additional information: The IsChecked property doesn't work for two reasons: When a button is selected, the IsChecked properties of other buttons in the group don't get set to false. When a button is selected, its own IsChecked property does not get set after the first time the button is selected. I am guessing that the binding is getting trashed by WPF on the first click. Demo project: Here is the code and markup for a simple demo that reproduces the problem. Now click Button A again. The button will be selected in the window, but no message box will appear--the IsChecked property has not been changed. Finally, click on Button B again--same result. The IsChecked property is not updated at all for either button after the button is first clicked.

• Log4Net with ASP.NET MVC...nothing happens...

  I am trying to use log4Net with Asp.net MVC and I cannot get anything to happen with it. i created a config that is in my web project root.
