• High Performance SQL Views Using WITH(NOLOCK)

  Every now and then you find a simple way to make everything much faster. We often find customers creating data warehouses or OLAP cubes even though they have a relatively small amount of data (a few gigs) compared to their server memory. If you have more server memory than the size of your database or working set, nearly any aggregate query should run in a second or less. In some situations there may be high traffic on from the transactional application and SQL server may wait for several other queries to run before giving you your results. The purpose of this is make sure you don’t get two versions of the truth. In an ATM system, you want to give the bank balance after the withdrawal, not before or you may get a very unhappy customer. So by default databases are rightly very conservative about this kind of thing. Unfortunately this split-second precision comes at a cost. The performance of the query may not be acceptable by today’s standards because the database has to maintain locks on the server. Fortunately, SQL Server gives you a simple way to ask for the current version of the data without the pending transactions. To better facilitate reporting, you can create a view that includes these directives. CREATE VIEW CategoriesAndProducts AS SELECT * FROM dbo.Categories WITH(NOLOCK) INNER JOIN dbo.Products WITH(NOLOCK) ON dbo.Categories.CategoryID = dbo.Products.CategoryID In some cases quires that are taking minutes end up taking seconds.   SubMain have announced at http://community.submain.com/forums/2/1556/ShowThread.aspx#1556 that the next version of GhostDoc will include a VS2005/VS2008/VS2010 compatible spell checker. This replaces their existing spellchecker (http://submain.com/products/codespell.aspx)  which is being discontinued. If you buy GhostDoc Pro now (I urge you to as it helps tremendously in documenting both C# and VB.NET code) , be sure to include Licence Protection as it means you will get the next version that includes the spell-checker free! Why is a spell checker important? By spell checking all your comments, you will make your documentation much easier to read. This means that instead of you being distracted by typographic errors, your mind will be free to see errors in what has been written. Remember the next person that has to struggle to read your code could well be yourself! So be kind to your self. Do the following: Document whole source files in VB.NET of C# with GhostDoc Pro Run Stylecop and fix the issues it uncovers. Run the spellchecker (when it is available) Add remarks where necessary Specify in the project to produce XML documentation Compile the XML using Sandcastle to help files Review the help files and ask yourself if the explanations are sufficient.

  (Possibly this belongs on stackoverflow, although it's not really a programming issue since the code works when run directly. If it needs to be moved, though, no problem.) I have a PHP file (which consumers a National Weather Service web service via SOAP, if it matters) that I need to run on a scheduled basis. I'm trying to set up a cron job in Webmin. • Expanding existing DVCS Wiki

  A portion of my job is to maintain technical documentation for a rapidly expanding manufacturing company. Because it is only a portion of my job and the company's product line is expanding so quickly, I can't stay on top of the documentation. As a result, I've been yearning for an information management system with a handful of specific features. I've found many products that have a subset, but none that have all the features I'm looking for. I'm at the point of picking an existing product and expanding it to cover my desired feature set, however, this will be a pet project and I will be learning the underlying language as I go. So, the main question is which existing product will be the easiest to expand to cover the full feature set and has a relatively easy to learn language? Alternatively, have I missed another existing program that will cover the feature set or should be in my list of "close, but not quite there"? • Decorator not calling the decorated instance - alternative design needed

  Assume I have a simple interface for translating text (sample code in C#): public interface ITranslationService { string GetTranslation(string key, CultureInfo targetLanguage); // some other methods... } A first simple implementation of this interface already exists and simply goes to the database for every method call. Assuming a UI that is being translated at start up this results in one database call per control. To improve this, I want to add the following behavior: As soon as a request for one language comes in, fetch all translations from this language and cache them. All translation requests are served from the cache. I thought about implementing this new behavior as a decorator, because all other methods of that interface implemented by the decorater would simple delegate to the decorated instance. However, the implementation of GetTranslation wouldn't use GetTranslation of the decorated instance at all to get all translations of a certain language. It would fire its own query against the database. This breaks the decorator pattern, because every functionality provided by the decorated instance is simply skipped. This becomes a real problem if there are other decorators involved. My understanding is that a Decorator should be additive. In this case however, the decorator is replacing the behavior of the decorated instance. I can't really think of a nice solution for this - how would you solve it? Everything is allowed, even a complete re-design of ITranslationService itself.

• Updating password hashing without forcing a new password for existing users

  You maintain an existing application with an established user base. Over time it is decided that the current password hashing technique is outdated and needs to be upgraded. Furthermore, for UX reasons, you don't want existing users to be forced to update their password. The whole password hashing update needs to happen behind the screen. Assume a 'simplistic' database model for users that contains: ID Email Password How does one go around to solving such a requirement? My current thoughts are: create a new hashing method in the appropriate class update the user table in the database to hold an additional password field Once a user successfully logs in using the outdated password hash, fill the second password field with the updated hash This leaves me with the problem that I cannot reasonable differentiate between users who have and those who have not updated their password hash and thus will be forced to check both. This seems horribly flawed. Furthermore this basically means that the old hashing technique could be forced to stay indefinitely until every single user has updated their password. Only at that moment could I start removing the old hashing check and remove the superfluous database field. I'm mainly looking for some design tips here, since my current 'solution' is dirty, incomplete and what not, but if actual code is required to describe a possible solution, feel free to use any language.

PS: I know is specific to Altova and their Dev Tools, but just like Eclipse and Visual Studio it is one of the widest used toolkits for XML related development & programming. • EclipseLink does multitenancy. Today.

  So you heard Java EE 7 will be about the cloud, but that didn't mean a whole lot to you. Then it was characterized as PaaS, something in between IaaS and SaaS. And finally it all became clear when referenced as support for multitenancy. Or did it? When it comes to JPA and persistence is general, multitenancy is defined as the ability to share a database schema among various groups of users (i.e. tenants). This means that there is no database setup or reconfiguration required as the data is co-located in the same database. EclipseLink 2.3 (the Indigo train release) let's you do just that by supporting tenant discriminator column(s) via annotations or XML with applications providing values for these discriminators via an API or PU configuration. Check out details here. EclipseLink 2.3 is scheduled to be the default and supported JPA provider for GlassFish 3.1.1. Another nice feature of this release is the ability to extend persistence units on the fly. The GlassFish Podcast has an interview up with EclipseLink's Doug Clarke. Expect more on multitenancy across the Java EE spectrum as the specification work progressed.

• Perfomance of 8 bit operations on 64 bit architechture

  I am usually a Python / Database programmer, and I am considering using C for a problem. I have a set of sequences, 8 characters long with 4 possible characters. My problem involves combining sets of these sequences and filtering which sets match a criteria. The combinations of 5 run into billions of rows and takes around an hour to run. So I can represent each sequence as 2 bytes. If I am working on a 64 bit architechture will I gain any advantage by keeping these data structures as 2 bytes when I generate the combinations, or will I be as well storing them as 8 bytes / double ? (64 bit = 8 x 8) If I am on a 64 bit architecture, all registers will be 64 bit, so in terms of operations that shouldn´t be any faster (please correct me if I am wrong). Will I gain anything from the smaller storage requirements - can I fit more combinations in memory, or will they all take up 64 bits anyway? And finally, am I likley to gain anything coding in C. I have a first version, which stores the sequence as a small int in a MySQL database. It then self joins the tabe to itself a number of times in order to generate all the possible combinations. The performance is acceptable, depending on how many combinations are generated. I assume the database must involve some overhead.

  I need some help or maybe only a hint for the right direction. I've got a system that is sperated into two applications. An existing VB.NET desktop client using Entity Framework 5 with code first approach and a asp.net Web Api client in C# that will be refactored right yet. It should be possible to deliver OData. The system and the datamodel is still involving and so migrations will happen in undefined intervalls. So I'm now struggling how to manage my database access on the web api system. So my favourd approch would be us Entity Framework on both systems but I'm running into trouble while creating new migrations. Two solutions I've thought about: Shared Data Access dll The first idea was to separate the data access layer to a seperate project an reference from each of the systems. The context would be the same as long as the dll is up to date in each system. This way both soulutions would be able to make a migration. The main problem ist that it is much more complicate to update a web api system than it is with the client Click Once Update Solution and not every migration is important for the web api. This would couse more update trouble and out of sync libraries Database First on Web Api The second idea was just to use the database first approch an on web api side. But it seems that all annotations will be lost by each model update. Other solutions with stored procedures have been discarded because of missing OData support and maintainability. Does anyone run into same conflicts or has any advices how such a problem can be solved!

• Client-Server MMOG & data structures sync when joining / playing

  After reading a few articles on MMOG architecture, there is still one point on which I cannot find much information: it has to do with how you keep in sync server data on the client, when you join, and while you play. A pretty vague question, I agree. Let me refine it: Let's say we have an MMOG virtual world subdivided into geographical cells. A player in a cell is mostly interested in what happens in the cell itself, and all the surrounding cells, not more. When joining the game for the first time, the only thing we can do is send some sort of "database dump" of the interesting cells to the client. When playing, I guess it would be very inefficient to do the same thing regularly. I imagine the best thing to do is to send "deltas" to the client, which would allow keeping the local database in sync. Now let's say the player moves, and arrives in another cell. Surrounding cells change, and for all the new cells the player subscribes, the same technique as used when joining the game has to be used: some sort of "database dump". This mechanic of joining/moving in a cell-based MMOG virtual world interests me, and I was wondering if there were tried and tested techniques in this domain. Thanks!

• Is a "model" branch a common practice?

  I just thought it could be a good thing to have a dedicated version control branch for all database schema changes and I wanted to know if anyone else is doing the same and what have the results been. Say that you are working with: Schema model/documentation (some file where you model the database visually to generate the schema source, say MySQL Workbench, with a .mwb file, which is binary) Schema source (a .sql file) Schema-based code generation The normal way we were working was with feature branches, so we would do changes to the model files (the database specific ones), and then have to regenerate points 2 and 3, dealing with the possible conflicts (or even code rewriting). Now say that your workflow goes the same way as the previous item numbering. With a model branch you wouldn't have to reconcile the schema model with binaries in other feature branches, or have to regenerate schema source and regenerate code (which might have human code on top of it). It makes so much sense to me it feels weird not having seen this earlier as a common practice. Edit: I'm counting on branch merges to be the assertions for the model matching the code. I use a DVCS, so I don't fear long-lived branches or scary-looking merges. I'm also doing feature branching.
