• How can I change my "Desktop bar"?

  The problem: In Gnome 3.4 when I click the main menu, it's white. The text of the menu is also white. Original text: I have a problem. When I installed the new version of Gnome (3.4) the "Desktop bar" (I'm sorry, I don't know what's the real name of that bar, but is the bar on the top on Ubuntu 11.10) every time I click on the username icon, or the battery, etc., the menu comes on gray or white and the letters are white. I know maybe this is a stupid question but it annoys me. Besides, my username doest not appear on the login screen. I tried to reset my settings, I delete gnome, and check the Unsettings and CompizConfig but the problem is still there. Maybe I miss something on the process of looking on any configuration tool but I don't think so... Sorry if the question is something basic or even stupid but I'm new on Ubuntu and I'm experimenting whit it.

• Boots to a totally blank screen after I installed some ATI Radeon card updates

  I am using Ubuntu 10.04 LTS, dual boot with win7 on ThinkPad T400, I followed Ubuntu update hints and installed some update for my ATI Radeon graphic card, but when I boot to Ubuntu(means I can still load GRUB), the tragedy happened, the screen goes to blank and no matter what key stroke, I can not get any responds, I try to go to text terminal, but impossible! However when I hit the power button, the computer would pop out the Ubuntu shutdown screen briefly and shut down. I figure out I should delete the updates package of my graphic card, but I don't even get a chance to go to text terminal, please help me!

• core.* files eating up server space (~50MB)

  I'm renting server space from someone and, upon logging in my control panel after quite sometime, noticed an abnormal spike (~50MB) in the disk usage. Upon investigating, I found a lot of core.* files scattered around my public_html directory. Each one is more than 5MB in size but no more than 6MB. The * part is all numbers (in programming regex, that should be core\.\d+). I downloaded one and checked the contents. There was a lot of balderdash characters (NUL mostly, but also a scattering of ETB, ETX, STX) but there's this block of readable text which says: This text is part of the internal format of your mail folder, and is not a real message. It is created automatically by the mail system software. If deleted, important folder data will be lost, and it will be re-created with the data reset to initial values. Pretty self-explanatory. A few blocks above the text are some more readable messages that look like logs but is sandwiched in between non printable characters. I've extracted some below. Scan not valid for mh mailboxes Bogus character 0x%x in news state Can't rewrite news state %.80s Error closing backup news state %.80s No state for newsgroup %.80s found Now, a few concerns: Am I under attack? The messages seem to be about my webmail but I don't use my personal webmail that much---only for a vanity email address and an inbox for an outdated comments system. However, lately, I seem to notice a spike in the spam for my vanity mail. (Note: the comments system is covered by a captcha but every now and then some get through. My vanity email has a spam filter but it isn't as good as I'd like). Next, if this is a feature, can I turn it off? Is it advisable to? I've only 150MB so you see why I'm fretting over a 50MB spike. Some final details: my only server-side scripts are in PHP. The directory which accumulated the most number of these core files is the one containing the Wordpress-managed subdomain of my site. I manage my server through CPanel. Lastly, I decided to delete this files and after some checking nothing seems amiss in my websites nor in my mail. They are indeed the ones responsible for the ~50MB spike as my disk space usage is back to expected.

  I would like some pointers to information which would help me understand how to go about providing the ability to filter a list of entities by their attributes as well as by attributes of related entities. As an example, imagine a web app which provides order management of some kind. Orders and related entities are stored in a relational database. And imagine that the app has an interface which lists the orders. The problem is: how does one allow the list to be filtered by, for example:- order number (an attribute) line item name (an attribute of a n-n related entity) some text in an administrative note related to the order (text found in an attribute of a 1-1 related entity) I'm trying to discover whether there is something like a standard, efficient way to construct the queries and the filtering form; or some possible strategies; or any theory on the topic; or some example code. • Chrome not accepting international dead keys 14.04

  Every other application on 14.04 accepts that I have selected US international with dead keys as my keyboard layout option, and accepts text input as it should. Chrome however fails to recognise what keyboard I have set in system settings and blindly uses "US keyboard". Looking for a solution to force Chrome to accept dead key input. • SmS Gateways - How do other sites do it? [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: Send and Receive SMS from my Website I would love to have a feature on my site that sends Email reminders and SmS(text messages) to people mobile phones. I been searching around and all I am finding is api's that charge money per SmS message(as low as 1cent per message). However even at 1cent per message that is still too much. The amount of money I am charging per year could be servilely eroded by just the Sms messages along. I could of course charge more money for my service or have an add on for SmS messages but I don't think either would work as most people expect it to be free feature and if they have to pay anything that is because of their carrier charging them not the website. How do other sites do it? I guessing companies like google have their own gateway providers or something like that. But how about smaller sites what do they do? I can't see them paying per sms text message.

  I have Acer 4745G with ATI HD 5650 1GB VRAM. After I installed the COD Black Ops trough Wine Playonlinux and successfully installed, and I play the game and then appear message "Shader Model 3.0 not available". I have installed ATI driver 11.8 when I trying this game. And then I'm trying to install the driver from menu "System Administration Additional Driver, it doesn't work. I cannot log in, in the screen appear only the text for log in. And then I uninstall it trough recovery mode. And then I download ATI driver 11.11 from official ATI/AMD website, and then I restart my computer and my screen appearing only text again. I'm using Ubuntu (Ultimate Edition) 11.04. How to overcome this problem?

  I've recently installed Ubuntu 11.10 on my Windows 7 desktop computer (on a seperate partition) Everything has gone smoothly except when I restart the computer and GRUB's loader screen shows, part of the screen gets cut off.. but once ive selected a boot option and hit enter, the screen readjusts to fill the entire monitor properly. So my question is, is there a way I can correct this ? Kind of annoying not being able to see the full boot option

• Can't n run a bootable cd of ubuntu desktop on a laptop with no OS

  I recorded a bootable CD with the image that I downloaded from the Ubuntu site, using NTI CD MAKER. My laptop had a problem and I prefered to get it fixed without installing an OS. Now, when I try to run this CD it shows the following error mssage: Device driver not found: 'MSCD001'.   My Web site displays song lyrics in a multi-column format, using CSS3. Both Firefox & MSIE 10+ display the multi-column text perfectly, but Chrome does not. This sample page shows the problem: http://www.hymntime.com/tch/test/html5/html5-multicolumn-test.htm The page uses a media selector, so your Chrome window must be at least 1280 pixels wide to see the effect. In fact, if you make the Chrome window less than 1280 pixels, you'll see the lyrics block change to a single column, of the same overall width. In other words, when Chrome shifts to 1-column to 2-column mode (due to the wider browser window), the lyrics block remains the same width, causing text to be squeezed together. Has anyone else seen this behavior, or know a solution? Is this a Chrome bug, or I am I doing something wrong? I posted this question on a Chrome forum a while back, but got no reply.

  thanks for your time and reading this, here's the deal: i upgraded from 11.10 to 12.04 and everything worked out until i rebooted, i had 11.10 sucessfully running as a dual boot with windows vista. when i rebooted, my GRUB was shot to hell, what ever option i selected it said partion not found or something similar... booting into a live version on a thumb drive and running bootrepair from there fixed the issue... but only for ubuntu, when i try to boot into windows it only goes back to GRUB. i'm not at home, and heres a list of what i have here with me... 1 4gb thumb drive, empty 1 8gb thumb drive, windows vista installer bootable 1 old laptop, the one i try to save, optical drive is not existent 2 Mbps internet connection can you help me get back into my windows without having to reinstall windows? or at least show me a way how to use my illustrator through a virtual machine or something? here's my grub cfg # # DO NOT EDIT THIS FILE # # It is automatically generated by grub-mkconfig using templates # from /etc/grub.d and settings from /etc/default/grub # ### BEGIN /etc/grub.d/00_header ### if [ -s $prefix/grubenv ];
