  • How to Software Service Industry get their Client from or where do they look for their Clients ?

    - by Rachel
This question is inclined more towards Business Side of Software Industry, I am sure that we have two types in Software Industry as with any other Industry, i.e, Service side and Product Side. Basically for Product based company, we are looking more into product features and to see if market if mature or not for particular product but as far as Service Based company goes (may be it can be big giants like Infosys, TCS or Sapient or some midsize or small companies which provide services like:Web Design,Website Design,Corporate Identity,Logo Design,Flash Design,Web Applications,Enterprise Portal,Rich Internet Applications,Business Applications,Technology Consulting,Ecommerce,Online Store Creations,Custom Shopping Carts,Ecommerce Hosting,Website Marketing,Organic SEO,Pay-Per-Click,Social Media Optimization,Mobile,Mobile Website and Mobile Applications) where do they look for Client and how do they manage to get one ? So my basic question is Where do Service Based Companies Look for Client or get their Clients Form ?

  • Removing DOM event handlers in long-running browser session

    - by Chris Beck
I have a browser interface with a ul#contacts list on the left and div#contact property panel (email, phone) on the right. Click a contact in the list and my app makes an XHR request to get the contact property HTML fragment and update div#contact.innerHTML. Each contact fragment has an "Edit Contact" link. With JS, I progressively upgrade that link with an event listener that performs an XHR request to replace the static property panel with an in-place edit form. This can happen many times during a single browser session. How should I clean up my "Edit Contact" event listener? Do I need to remove it manually before the form overwrites the property panel? Or is the event listener cleaned up automatically when the contents of div#contact (and the node that I'm listening on) is overwritten? FWIW, I still consider IE6 to be part of my target market.

  • .NET user interface components recommendations

    - by Parakus
I'm looking for advice on what .NET user interface components are out there on the market. I have been developing asp.net websites and have mainly been using the Visual studio toolbox build in controls supported by the AjaxcontrolToolkit and the applications have been mainly used inhouse running on our company intranet. But now a new client wants a much more professional looking, commercial web application and they have a budget for some user components for use in the application. Any recommendations where value for money will be realised. Interested in components that will integrate well with ASP.NET 3.5 SP1 or even .NET 4.

  • App store for the PC?

    - by Chris
So I've spent a lot of time making an iPhone game and have recently realized that I don't have to limit myself to just Apple - I know there are app stores for Palm and Android, but does anybody know of a good "app store" for the plain old PC? I would like to have one where individual developers can publish an app and not have to worry about all the billing and piracy issues!

  • How can I embed a conditional comment for IE with innerHTML?

    - by Samuel Charpentier
    Ok so I want to conditionally add this line of code; <!--[if ! IE]> <embed src="logo.svg" type="image/svg+xml" /> <![endif]--> Using: document.getElementById("logo") .innerHTML='...'; In a if()/else() statement and it don't write it! If i get rid of the selective comment ( <!--[if ! IE]><![endif]-->) and only put the SVG ( <embed src="logo.svg" type="image/svg+xml" /> ) it work! what should I do? I found a way around but i think in the Android browser the thing will pop up twice. here's what I've done ( and its Validated stuff!); <!DOCTYPE html> <html> <head> <META CHARSET="UTF-8"> <title>SVG Test</title> <script type="text/javascript"> //<![CDATA[ onload=function() { var ua = navigator.userAgent.toLowerCase(); var isAndroid = ua.indexOf("android") > -1; //&& ua.indexOf("mobile"); if(isAndroid) { document.getElementById("logo").innerHTML='<img src="fin_palais.png"/>'; } } //]]> </script> </head> <body> <div id="logo"> <!--[if lt IE 9]> <img src="fin_palais.png"/> <![endif]--> <!--[if gte IE 9]><!--> <embed src="fin_palais.svg" type="image/svg+xml" /> <!--<![endif]--> </div> </body>

  • Windows Mobile 6.5 modern GUI development

    - by dominolog
Hello How to approach a modern GUI development in Windows Mobile 6.5. I can see in .NET CF 2.0/3.5 only legacy common controls, no alpha blended controls, no fading etc. Comparing to Android or Symbian, Windows Mobile 6.5 look-a-like of applications is very elderly. Is there support for WPF in Windows Mobile 6.5? Thanks and Regards Dominik

  • Setting up Matcher for String phrase match in file

    - by randomCoder
Having trouble figuring out how to match a phrase string to a phrase in file stream. The file I'm dealing with contains random words such as: 3 little pigs built houses and 1 little pig went to the market etc. for many lines Using "little pig" as my pattern and matcher.find() I can locate 2 matches: "little pig" and "little pigs". However, I only want it to match "little pig". What can I do? I thought about using matcher.lookingAt() but I wouldn't know how to set a proper region when I can't rely on the file string phrases I'm matching being on separate lines.

  • Programming practice

    - by exc1z
I've decided to get some experience working on some project this summer. Due to local demand on market I would prefer to learn Java (Standard and Enterprise Editions). But I can't even to conjecture what kind of project to do. Recently I had some ideas about C. With C I could to contribute to huge Linux projects. I don't mean that my work will be surely commited. I could get the code and practice with it. But C it's not right thing to get good job in my area. In case of JavaSE there is a chance to develop some desktop applications. But thinking about JavaEE I get stuck. I'll be very thankful for answers.

  • Business applications suck, is there anything else out there?

    - by GenEric35
It seems most of the work is in business is applications like inventory, sales, banks, medical, human resources, government, insurance, document processing, file archiving etc. Would you agree? From my point of view business applications seem to occupy over 90% of the job offerings(because no one wants to work on those?). Furthermore, each big app I have worked on, the application itself sucked, like being paid in compensation for putting up with a bad code base and product. Seeing how those business apps seem to occupy most of the market, should one accept that this is just the sad reality of this business? Do you get to develop on projects that are more dynamic than those?

  • Website access per client and each client having multiple users Sample Application

    - by windson
I'm interested in building a web application in .NET that is scalable to multiple Clients and each and every Client has users associated with them. Suppose that my website is xyz.com and I have 3 clients "abc", "klm", "pqr" and I want to give access to features of xyz.com under the link as follows www.xyz.com/abc www.xyz.com/klm www.xyz.com/pqr and Client abc has N users and I want to set 3 roles for every client's user role. Is there any sample application in .NET that support this kind of website access per client having multiple users? And If I use ASP.NET Membership will that be a suitable membership solution or Do I need to opt for any other type of Membership defined by my own or already available in open source market for .NET. Edit: All the clients will have same functionality. I would like to build a generic model for www.xyz.com/{whatever} so that in future if a new client want to register with me he/she just have to give client name and up on adding client name all the features avaiable to exising clients will be applicable.

  • .NET component for conversion to PDF

    - by Anvar
Hi, I am looking for .NET component to convert different files into PDF format. Right now I need to be able to convert programmatically doc, xls and TIFF files to PDF. But I may need to deal with more file types in near future. I looked at Aspose.Words, it works good but for doc only. Is there any component on the market that would allow me to convert in my code all three file types? I would appreciate your suggestions. Thanks, Anvar

  • How would you measure conversion for an iPhone App Download?

    - by Eran Kampf
I want to test how users convert from my web page to downloading my iPhone app. Right now the best funnel I figured out was to go through a page that pings Google Analytics and then redirects to an iTunes link. But this funnel only measures conversion for users who got redirected to iTunes and not if they actually downloaded the app once they saw it in iTunes. Anyone knows of a way to measure conversion to the actual download? (I know this is not a coding question but still a problem a app developers would encounter trying to market their app)

  • HTML5 Offline Storage on iPad and iPhone BUG

    - by scaraveos
Hello everyone, I created a manifest file with 1000 items. Safari, Mozilla browsers are saving the files offline successfully and even Android saves the files correctly offline. On iPad and iPhone when I am trying to save more than 300 items in some point the applicationCache returns "error". When I am trying to save less (e.x.: 200) it saves the files correctly and the applicationCache returns "cached". Any ideas? Thank you.

  • Does Ruby/Rails require more unit testing than say a PHP app?

    - by Blankman
I don't find the unit testing push in the PHP market like I see/read in the ruby/rails arena. Could one just as easily NOT unit test in ruby/rails as in php, or is ruby just too bendable and breakable that it "more" recommended to test in ruby than in php? Meaning there are large code bases like vBulletin, and from what I can tell, they don't unit test. I hope you understand what I am asking here, not the pros/cons of testing, or whether one should test or not, but rather, does one language need to be tested more than another? maybe its easy to write buggy code, or break during refactoring etc.

  • How can i attach data to a JTA transaction? (or uniquely identify it)

    - by kwyjibo
I have a getStockQuote() function that will get a current stock quote for a symbol from the stock market. My goal is that within a JTA transaction, the first call to getStockQuote() will fetch a stock quote, but all subsequent calls within the same transaction will reuse the same stock quote (e.g.: it will not try to fetch a new quote). If a different transaction starts, or another transaction runs concurrently, i would expect the other transaction to fetch its own stock quote on its first call. This would be similar to how you can configure JPA providers to only fetch a database row from the database once, and use the cached value for subsequent access to the same database row within the transaction. Does anyone have tips on how this can be achieved?

  • MvvmCross experiences, hindsight, limitations?

    - by Jason Steele
I am considering using the MvvmCross framework for a cross platform mobile application that will target Android, iPhone and WP7. Does anyone have any experience with this framework they would like to share, and are they aware of any constraints or limitations that it would be useful to be aware of? For example, am I still able to use native page transitions of my choosing? Are there any performance or storage (app size) implications?

  • can i add textfields in the code other than in the init?

    - by themanepalli
    Im a 15 year old noob to java. I am trying to make a basic program trader that asks for the stock price, the stock name, the stock market value and the type of order. Based on the type of order, i want a new textfield to appear. do i have to add the textfield in the init first or can i do it in the action performed. I googled someother ones but they are a little too complicated for me. heres my code. import java.awt.*; import java.applet.*; // import an extra class for the ActionListener import java.awt.event.*; public class mathFair extends Applet implements ActionListener { TextField stockPrice2; TextField stockName2; TextField orderType2; TextField marketValue2; TextField buyOrder2; TextField sellOrder2; TextField limitOrder2; TextField stopLossOrder2; Label stockPrice1; Label stockName1; Label orderType1; Label marketValue1; Label buyOrder1; Label sellOrder1; Label limitOrder1; Label stopLossOrder1; Button calculate; public void init() { stockPrice1 = new Label ("Enter Stock Price:"); stockName1 = new Label ("Enter Name of Stock: "); orderType1 = new Label ("Enter Type of Order: 1 for Buy, 2 for Sell, 3 for Stop Loss, 4 for Limit"); marketValue1= new Label("Enter The Current Price Of The Market"); stopLossOrder1 = new Label ("Enter The Lowest Price The Stock Can Go"); limitOrder1 = new Label ("Enter The Highest Price The Stock Can Go"); stockPrice2 = new TextField (35); stockName2 = new TextField (35); orderType2 = new TextField (35); marketValue2= new TextField(35); calculate= new Button("Start The Simulation"); add (stockPrice1); add (stockPrice2); add (stockName1); add (stockName2); add (marketValue1); ; add(marketValue2); add (orderType1); add (orderType2); add(calculate); ; calculate.addActionListener(this); } public void actionPerformed (ActionEvent e) { String stock= stockPrice2.getText(); int stockPrice= Integer.parseInt(stock); stockPrice2.setText(stockPrice +""); String marketV= marketValue2.getText(); int marketValue= Integer.parseInt(marketV); marketValue2.setText(marketValue+""); String orderT= orderType2.getText(); int orderType= Integer.parseInt(orderT); orderType2.setText(orderType+""); if((e.getSource()==calculate)&& (orderType==1)) { buyOrder2= new TextField(35); buyOrder1 = new Label("Enter Price You Would Like To Buy At"); add(buyOrder2); add(buyOrder1); } else if((e.getSource()==calculate)&& (orderType==2)) { sellOrder2= new TextField(35); sellOrder1 = new Label("Enter Price You Would Like To Sell At"); add(sellOrder2); add(sellOrder1); } else if((e.getSource()==calculate)&& (orderType==3)) { stopLossOrder2= new TextField(35); stopLossOrder1=new Label("Enter The Lowest Price The Stock Can Go"); add(stopLossOrder2); add(stopLossOrder1); } else if((e.getSource()==calculate)&& (orderType==4)) { limitOrder2=new TextField(35); limitOrder1= new Label("Enter the Highest Price The Stock Can Go"); add(limitOrder2); add(limitOrder1);; } } }

  • How can you setup multiple WSGI apps on one server?

    - by Shakakai
I'm working on a python based server product where a user can install WSGI-based python apps on their server. I can enforce any restriction on the application structure or format to make this easy. The user workflow would be: browse an app market, showing a list of WSGIpython apps select an app and choose "install" the app would be downloaded from a remote server to the user's server the http server would then have to be configured to start serving that application from the app's id, ex. a blog app with an id of "blog" at "/blog/", so all requests below /blog/ would be seen as root by the blog application. Any suggestions on how to set something like this up? Holler if my flow of consciousness lost you ;)

  • starting a service based on someone's GPL/MIT licensed code

    - by fooyee
someone wrote a nice framework for developing html5 3d engine. It's GPL/MIT licensed. Do you think it's a good idea to build upon it, and then repackage it and sell it as a service? For eg the framework lets you build 3d environments. so I build on it, maybe add a few features like characters and music in the environment, and turn it into an online game. Is it a feasible idea? Of course, part of the GPL license says that all source code has to be visible to end users. Assuming the web is a winner take all market based on first mover advantage, why care about hiding the source code? It's the product that's being sold that counts.

  • what do you expect from flash in the near future?

    - by algro
The recent article of steve jobs link made me think about the future of flash. I'm learning actionscript 3.0 in my studies but is it the right decision still to go for it? I was pretty sure that I will be able to build application in as3 for iphones/ipads in the near future. It seems to me, while I would stay with flash, the market will be polarized by apple and adobe and you will always work double for both clientele, or just lose half of them. Which decision would you take as a designer, if you were still at university and you intend to become a freelancer?

  • what are your biggest complaints about TFS as source-control?

    - by jcollum
I've used TFS for about 18 months now and I'm really not excited about it. It seems like the worst of the current versions of SCMs on the market. I think this thread will help people decide if TFS is for them vs. other source control systems. While TFS does a lot more than that, I think that source control is so critical to software development that any system (or combination thereof) that you pick needs to consider source control first. So, feel free to sound off. Maybe it'll make us feel better and be informative at the same time.
