• How do you enable syslogd to accept incoming connections on Snow Leopard from remote loggers?

  How do I get syslogd to accept incoming connections from remote hosts on Snow Leopard? I'd like to centralize logging such that various devices and systems send logs to Snow Leopard's syslogd, which normally hangs out on UDP 514. However, I'm unable to get them to successfully be accepted by good ole syslogd. I tcpdumped on the Snow Leopard box to verify that packets are being spouted to port 514 -- they are. I checked that syslogd is listening on 514 -- it's not. Googling around told me that, on older versions of OSX (don't you love the way things change so rapidly on OSX), one just had to add a flag to the syslogd daemon to allow remote; one did this in com.apple.syslogd.plist. However the syslogd daemon has no flags (at least in its man page) that suggests any remote anything. What's the solution to this? Secondary, less import but relevant question: What's 'newsyslog'? I see a plist file but it's not running (apparently). Thanks

  I am having an ASUS K55VM....it came with DOS....to this Windows 7 was installed...now i am planned to add another OS ie Ubuntu...my computer had 4 partitions of 240GB 230GB 230GB and 230GB....i changed this to 5 parts....243GB 230GB 230GB 150GB and an 80GB...i installed Ubuntu 12.04 to the 80GB partition through a USB flash drive....it installed fine...however the problem is during the Boot option in Windows Boot manager when i choose Ubuntu...this what is displayed... Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause. To fix the problem: 1.Insert your Windows installation disc and restart your computer. 2.Choose your language settings, and then click "Next." 3.Click "Repair your computer." If you do not have this disc, contact your system administrator or computer manufacturer for assistance. File: \ubuntu\winboot\wubildr.mbr Status: 0xc000000e Info: The selected entry could not be loaded because the application is missing or corrupt. I tried to change the boot option for the OS and made Ubuntu as my first option....It worked...however windows 7 does not show up in GRUB....in this fear i did the following: Restarted my pc changed boot option 1 to windows. Formatted the drive to which Ubuntu was installed(80GB one)through windows. Restarted again. The problem persists....Windows boot manager shows Ubuntu still and when i choose this it gives two lines one like: grub rescue....but my windows 7 is working perfectly fine. Now want a solution to remove Ubuntu from the windows boot option and reinstall completely...

• Writing a SQL Azure Book - Notes

  Over the last few months I have had the opportunity to ramp up significantly on SQL Azure.  In fact I will be the co-author of Pro SQL Azure, published by Apress. This is going to be a book on how to best leverage SQL Azure, both from a technology and design standpoint. Talking about design, one of the things I realized is that understanding the key limitations and boundary parameters of Azure in general, and more specifically SQL Azure, will play an important role in making sounds design decisions that both meet reasonable performance requirements and minimize the costs associated with running a cloud computing solution.   The book touches on many design considerations including link encryption, pricing model, design patterns, and also some important performance techniques that need to be leveraged when developing in Azure, including Caching, Lazy Properties and more.   Finally I started working with Shards and how to implement them in Azure to ensure database scalability beyond the current size limitations. Implementing shards is not simple, and the book will address how to create a shard technology within your code to provide a scale-out mechanism for your SQL Azure databases.   As you can see, there are many factors to consider when designing a SQL Azure database. While we can think of SQL Azure as a cloud version of SQL Server, it is best to look at it as a new platform to make sure you don’t make any assumptions on how to best leverage it.

• How can I email a vCard to users who are unable to download it?

  I have created vCards for the people in my business, and they are great for users on standard browsers; however, users browsing on a mobile device (notably iPhone) are unable to download and view my vCard. Is there a service that I can direct them to that will allow them to receive an email containing my vCard, or is there a simple way I can set this up myself? I am running my site on WordPress, and initial attempts have failed spectacularly. I'd like for them to be given the option to perform either action, but have the predominant action more prominently visible (probably via user agent detection). Something along the lines of: It looks like you're on an iPhone! It's a bummer they can't download vCards, but if you enter your email address, we'll wrap one up and send it your way! Don't worry, we won't send you junk email. Heck, we don't even save your email address! [email protected] Think you've got it all figured out? Fine, download the vCard instead!   I am trying to set up a mysql master/slave configuration in two EC2 instances. However, every time I reboot an instance, the IP address (and hostname) changes. I could assign an Elastic IP address, but would prefer to use the internal IP address. I can't be the first person to do this, but I can't seem to find a solution. There are a lot of "getting started" guides, but none of them mention how to handle changing IP addresses. So what are the best practices to manage master/slave replication in EC2?

• How to install compat-drivers or compat-wireless

  Could someone please explain me in detail how to install some of this drivers. I am running Ubuntu 12.04.2 and have the infamous (as I see everywhere in the net) problem with Atheros AR9462 wifi card. I tried everything to fix it and compat drivers are the only solution that I haven't tried. I tried to install some random package from kernel.org site and it couldn't make the driver (it threw some error). Then I updated the kernel to 3.10-rc7 and downloaded the last release of compat drivers and again the same problem occured. I reinstalled Ubuntu 12.04.2 and now I am using the 3.5 kernel because I don't know if rc7 is stable version. So my question is which compat wireless or compat drivers to download for this kernel and what is the process of installing. I tried with some command from the repository and it returned that it's not found. PS I am new to Ubuntu and Linux in general so explaining at length the install process and which driver I should install would be appreciated.

• IMAP can't access virtual account sharing name with local user account

  I am setting up a postfix/dovecot mail server with virtual accounts, per the Chris Haas tutorial. I'm finding that virtual users who also have local user accounts on the mail server cannot access their email remotely via IMAP. They're told they cannot login. (I'm using Thunderbird for that). These same users can login when emulating IMAP locally via telnet. Virtual users without local accounts have no trouble with IMAP access from remote clients. I've looked at the logs for clues to where the remote login process is failing (dovecot authentication failure? confusion over where emails are stored?) but found nothing helpful. I haven't found much in the dovecot or postfix documentation that describes the IMAP login process and expectations in enough detail to help me diagnose this. So: how do I go about identifying the problem and researching a solution?

  Right so, basically the story is that to test a XenServer environment from citrix I deployed a openQRM install from SVN to a ubuntu 10.4 install (on a ESX Environment) All went well installs, I can connect to it, but I can't seem to access the nagios plug in. Every time i wish to go to it i'm asked for a pw, and if I input the pw I wrote down yesterday it just doesn't let me in. I'm trying to reset the password on the nagios plug in now but for the life of me can't find it. Googled high and low for a defenitive working solution but so far no luck. • Why do funky characters show up in these Microsoft Word equations?

  A colleague sent me a document created with Microsoft Office 2007 that contains equations. On her end, the document looks fine; however, on my end, the equations show up with these funky characters overlaid on them: Why do these weird characters show up, and how do I fix it? The equations appear like this in both .doc and .docx documents. Additionally, when I double-click on the equations to edit them, I get a warning that the equations were created with a newer version of the equation editor, and when I close the editing window, the equations are gone completely. I think this might indicate a compatibility problem, but I am not sure of a solution.

• Electronic Postage provider compatible with Microsoft Word Mail Merge

  We're looking for an e-postage provider that is capable of working with the Mail Merge function in Microsoft Word 2007. Every now and then we extract addresses from our database to mail letters or notices. We use Mail Merge in Word 2007 to print the address information straight to the envelopes and then run all the envelopes through a Pitney Bowes Postage Meter. It would save us a huge step if we could somehow get an e-postage provider where we can just print out the postage straight to the envelopes along with the addresses at the same time. Anyone know of such a provider or a better solution?

• Compiz not drawing window controls in ubuntu 11.10

  I have recently installed driver for my ATI graphic card in my Dell Studio laptop. I have also read this somewhere on the web that Ubuntu enables compiz window manager by default if your hardware can run it. Is it true ? In my case before Installing graphic card driver the window manager was Metacity, but now I have compiz as my Window manager. I found this out uisng Displex Indicator applet also confirmed by wmctrl -m. From the time I have installed graphic card drivers, the window manager(Compiz) is not drawing window control buttons for some of the windows. For example if I open a terminal I have to close it using key board shortcuts or use the File - Quit option in app-menu. Also I am not able to move the window because of this. From then when-ever I find a window without window control buttons I am restarting the window manager using Displex Indicator applet. But this is very annoying and also consumes a lot of time(when I am doing my work). Can any one suggest any solution for this. What are up's and down's of using Compiz Vs Metacity.

  I've inherited a Dell server that is running out of space on C:. I'd like to quickly and painlessly resize the C drive with partitioning software. However, the RAID card is causing me some troubles. I've resized plenty of desktops in my time, but never a server with hardware RAID. Can anyone recommend software that is GUARANTEED to work with the Dell PERC 6/i? Hopefully someone has resized the system partition with this RAID card before! :) Of course, proper backups are available but I'd be more comfortable with a tried and true solution to save the headache of the restore.... • Send an Email at a future date

  I'd like to write up an email that gets sent out in a few days. I'd prefer to use Gmail, but I could use some other client if necessary. It doesn't look like Gmail has this feature in their labs anywhere, but it could just be hiding somewhere. Any ideas? EDIT: a bit more backstory on my particular situation. My wife is out of town for three weeks, and I've decided to email her every day while she's out. Unfortunately, I myself am going camping this weekend, so I wanted to pre-record a message that gets sent while I'm out. Unfortunately, FutureMail and FutureMe both are for sending email to yourself, probably for anti-spam reasons. I guess the best solution is to use thunderbird on my laptop (so it's shielded from power outages). Seems a little excessive to keep a computer running just to send a few emails, but whatever gets the job done :).

With this solution, I will have lots of nested if-then-else (one for each exit point of the original Java code). Is there a more elegant / idiomatic way of implementing this pattern in Haskell? In general, what is a Haskell idiomatic way to implement an early exit / return as used in an imperative language like Java?

  First of all thank you in advance for helping me. my issue is the old network admin found a problem whene he connected the firewall and the ETSU together the through put went down to less than 1 mega bit a second. his fix was to add a dlink router between the firewall and the etsu which speed it up to 5 mega bits a second. now my boss wants a more clean and proper solution if possible. i have check all the settings in the netgear it dose not seem to be a setting issue. if anyone can help that would be great.

• Howto return to virtual machine when remote desktop hangs?

  I'm using a vmware virtual machine running ubuntu linux and from there I connect to a Windows XP machine using rdesktop through a VPN tunnel. This configuration is given and cannot be changed. From time to time my internet connection does a reconnect. Then the running rdesktop (running in fullscreen mode) process freezes and isn't usable anymore. Now I want to return to the underlying linux and restart the rdesktop process. But I'm not able to get out of fullscreen rdesktop mode and so I cannot access the ubuntu desktop to kill any process. My solution is to reboot the vmware and start the rdesktop again. Is there a better way to get the configuration running again after a freeze? EDIT: I have no admin rights for the linux system. Everything must be done with user rights.

• Mac Book Pro and Photosohp working canvas lost off screen somewhere

  I seem to have a unique issue. I have a mac book pro which I often have connected to one or 2 additional monitors, and I think this is in part my issue. Cause when Im at home working with only the built in monitor and I go to open something new or existing in photoshop my canvas if you will call it that is no where to be found. I checked my display settings, its treating it as a one monitor solution. I've tried to in photoshop to bring all my windows to front, Ive tried to cascade and tile my windows, ive tried to reset my work area, and to no avail I can't for the life of me get the canvas to come to my screen so I can work with what ever I intend to work on. Anyone else have this problem or run into similar? How did you fix it?

• Proxying MMS Stream on a LAN

  A variety of users on our LAN would like to listen to an MMS stream, and in the interest of conserving bandwidth (and because our WAN connection is not fast at all) I was wondering if it was possible to set up a service which proxies the stream from the WAN and provides it to LAN computers, thus only downloading the stream once and then distributing it to clients. Any ideas? I have a Linux box serving as our LAN-WAN router, so it'd be ideal if something could sit on it and proxy the stream, but I also have Linux and Windows workstations. A free solution would be preferred.
