    I got asked this question once and still haven't been able to figure it out: You have an array of N integers, where N is large, say, a billion. You want to calculate the median value of this array. Assume you have m+1 machines (m workers, one master) to distribute the job to. How would you go about doing this? Since the median is a nonlinear operator, you can't just find the median in each machine and then take the median of those values.

  • Printing Images C# Overlapping Wrong

    I have created a program much like Photoshop in the sense that you can place images (picture box) on a control, move them around, delete them, and so on... I have also managed to put together a method to print all the images on the control with no problems. But here is the weird part: When I click print, the program prints the image which was placed first, on top of the image which came second. On the screen the user can see the image which was placed second, on top of the first placed image (the way it should be) but when I print its opposite? I have no idea why it does this...   • Creating a image viewer window controll.

    I am learning GDI+ and I am trying to make a display window with scroll bars (so I can only see part of the image at a time and I can scroll around it). I have read through the basics of GDI+ from several books but I have not found any good tutorials online or in books available to me about doing more advanced things like this. Any recommendations on guides or example code on how do do this?   • Should I really use a UITableView in this situation?

    Imagine you have a view like this: At the top, there is an UISegmentedControl with two segments. It functions like a tab. Pressing one segment will activate this particular content below that UISegmentedControl. Below the UISegmentedControl are some switches. These modify the way how the content should be rendered. And finally, below those switches, there's a table. Imagine a table not in sense of UITableView, but just what it really is: A table. It shows little messages like twitter messages or chat messages for example, one below the other. Like you know it from skype and other chats. Basically they're just rows with some formatting. A label, some image views, some lines, a background. Pretty basic. The data comes from an array. No core data. The whole thing including the segmented control and setup switches must be scrollable. So what I did is: I put all this stuff in an UIScrollView. Now I have to make the decision if I would use a UITableView inside there for that table part, or if I would just print a lot of rows on to the scroll view (with -drawRect:). But some problems stick in my head: Can I put a UITableView inside a UIScrollView? I assume this makes a lot of problems. I don't want that the table part is separately scrollable. Again imagine that view: First there are some basic choice things (segmented control, switches). Then there comes the table. When you scroll, the whole thing scrolls. That's mainly because this first part with the settings can be pretty big, so you would want to scroll it away. The next thing is: Can I customize UITableView in such a way, that it consists of two parts? One for that settings part, and one for the actual data to display?

    I asked a question earlier about ESBs written in Erlang or Java, and there didn't seem to be anything in Erlang, and only products in Java. http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2453641/what-would-be-the-best-language-in-which-to-write-an-esb/2453683#2453683 I guess I find it difficult to understand why a language like Erlang has no such middleware products, especially seeing as it should be ideally suited to the job.

  • Why changing the images name on server results in calling the old ones?

    I am running a slideshow on Ubuntu 12.04.1 that loads the images (slide1.jpg, slide2.jpg, slide3.jpg.., slide5.jpg) using the Javascript and styles as below: document.getElementById('slide_area').className='slide'+step; .slide1{background-image: url(../upload/slide1.jpg)} .slide2{background-image: url(../upload/slide2.jpg)} .slide3{background-image: url(../upload/slide3.jpg)} .slide4{background-image: url(../upload/slide4.jpg)} .slide5{background-image: url(../upload/slide5.jpg)} When I change the images names (show1.jpg, show2.jpg, show3.jpg.., show5.jpg) and also change the style as below: .slide1{background-image: url(../upload/show1.jpg)} .slide2{background-image: url(../upload/show2.jpg)} .slide3{background-image: url(../upload/show3.jpg)} .slide4{background-image: url(../upload/show4.jpg)} .slide5{background-image: url(../upload/show5.jpg)} And open the network section on Chrome, I see the server is calling the new name and old name for images! Now, I'm pretty sure you all stumbled upon similar situations at one point, and I would like you to share your experience on the subject: What is the gotcha that gets you all the time? the one you find the most annoying? (I have a few issues that seem to be without explanation, maybe your submissions will explain them) Here are a few of my "personnal" gotchas (randomly presented): For a MouseEvent to be fired even when the click is on the "transparent" background of a control (e.g. a label) and not just on the content (the Text in this case), the control's Background has to be set to "Brushes.Transparent" and not just "null" (default value for a label) A WPF DataGridCell's DataContext is the RowView to whom the cell belong, not the CellView When inside a ScrollViewer, a Scrollbar is managed by the scrollviewer itself (i.e. setting properties such as ScrollBar.Value is without effect) Key.F10 is not fired when you press "F10", instead you get Key.System and you have to go look for e.SystemKey to get the Key.F10 ... and now you're on.

  • What is a good free ODBC viewer?

    At my job I have to work with three different databases. One is a SQL Server 2008, for which I use SQL Server Management Studio, and another is MySQL, for which I use the MySQL tools. The third however is a Cache database that I can only access through a ODBC connection. Currently I use the SLIK software ODBC View tool to access it, but it is severely lacking when compared with the other two tools. Can anyone recommend a good tool for this type of work?

  • Should the program logic reside inside the gui object class or be external to the class?

    I have a question about how to structure code in relation to GUI objects. Suppose I have a dialog that has a list control that has a bunch of names obtained from a database. The user can edit the names. Does the logic reside inside that dialog class or should it be from the outside. To illustrate what I mean, here’s some pseudo code showing the structure of the code when the logic is handled outside the dialog class: NamesDialog : wxDialog { Private: ..stuff.. Public: ... SetNames(wxStringArray names); wxStringArray GetNames(); ..stuff.. } So the user of the class would do something like: wxStringArray names = DatabaseManager::Get()->GetNames(); names.Sort(); NamesDialogObject.SetNames(names); NamesDialogObject.ShowModal(); wxStringArray modified_names = NamesDialogObject.GetNames(); AddToDatabase(modified_names); //or something like this. On the other hand, the database logic can reside inside the NamesDialog class itself. In the show method I can query the database for the names and as the user interacts with the controls (list control in this case), the database can be updated from the event handlers. As a result the NamesDialog class only has the Show() method as there is no need to use SetNames or GetNames() etc. Which method is generally preferred? I don’t have much work experience so I’m not sure which is the proper way to handle it. Sometimes it's easier to handle everything in the class but getting access to objects it interacts with can be challenging. Generally can do it by having the relevant objects be singletons like the database manager in the above example.

  • dotNet Templated, Repeating, Databound ServerControl: Counting the templates OnDataBind?

    I have a server control that wraps an underlying class which manages a number of indexes to track where it is in a dataset (ie: RenderedRecordCount, ErroredRecordCount, NewRecordCount, etc.). I've got the server control rendering great, but OnDataBinding I'm having an issue as to seems to happen after CreateChildControls and before Render (both of which properly manage the iteration of the underlying indexes). While I'm somewhat familiar with the ASP.NET page lifecycle, this one seems to be beyond me at the moment. So... how do I hook into the iterative process OnDataBinding uses so I can manage the underlying indexes? Will I have to iterate over the ITemplates myself, managing the indexes as I go or is there an easier solution? Also... I implemented the iteration of the underlying indexes during CreateChildControls originally in the belief that was the proper place to hook in for events like OnDataBinding (thining it was done as the controls were being .Add'd). Now it seems that this may actually be unnecessary. So I guess the secondary question is: What happens during CreateChildControls? Are the unadulterated (read: with <%-tags in place) controls added to the .Controls collection without any other processing?

Would I need to use regex twice and can I change the inside of the <a ... >...</a> using regex or is there an easier way with C#?
