  • Are there any scripts to synchronize sites?

    I've just set up a fail-over DNS to switch the site to a second host if the first is down. This is great for showing an old / archived version of the site, but I suspect maintenance is going to be a real pain. I moved the files over with rsync in the first place. Is this the kinda thing that could be run as a cron job, automatically moving over newer files?

  • C# (non-abstract) class to represent paths

    I'm looking for a C# class that represents a file system path. I would like to use it (instead of strings) as the data type of variables and method arguments (top reasons: type safety, concat-proof, logical comparisons). System.IO.Path provides most of the functionality I want, but it is abstract. System.IO.FileInfo, as I understand, performs IO operations to do its job. I only want a wrapper for the path string.     I am looking for a GUI python module that is best suited for the following job: I am trying to plot a graph with many columns (perhaps hundreds), each column representing an individual. The user should be able to drag the columns around and drop them onto different columns to switch the two. Also, there are going to be additional dots drawn on the columns and by hovering over those dots, the user should see the values corresponding to those dots. What is the best way to approach this?

    If I'm looking to sell my app in other markets other than the U.S. on both Android and iOS, do I need to do anything inside the app coding-wise? I don't imagine that I need to but I just want to make sure. Also, while I'm at it, how do I collect on international app purchases considering they are in another currency? Will the currency be automatically converted to U.S. dollars or is that my job? Any insight on either of these questions would be greatly appreciated.

  • Avoiding instanceof in Java

    Having a chain of "instanceof" operations is considered a "code smell". The standard answer is "use polymorphism". How would I do it in this case? There are a number of subclasses of a base class; none of them are under my control. An analogous situation would be with the Java classes Integer, Double, BigDecimal etc. if (obj instanceof Integer) {NumberStuff.handle((Integer)obj);} else if (obj instanceof BigDecimal) {BigDecimalStuff.handle((BigDecimal)obj);} else if (obj instanceof Double) {DoubleStuff.handle((Double)obj);} I do have control over NumberStuff and so on. I don't want to use many lines of code where a few lines would do. (Sometimes I make a HashMap mapping Integer.class to an instance of IntegerStuff, BigDecimal.class to an instance of BigDecimalStuff etc. But today I want something simpler.) I'd like something as simple as this: public static handle(Integer num) { ... } public static handle(BigDecimal num) { ... } But Java just doesn't work that way. I'd like to use static methods when formatting. The things I'm formatting are composite, where a Thing1 can contain an array Thing2s and a Thing2 can contain an array of Thing1s. I had a problem when I implemented my formatters like this: class Thing1Formatter { private static Thing2Formatter thing2Formatter = new Thing2Formatter(); public format(Thing thing) { thing2Formatter.format(thing.innerThing2); } } class Thing2Formatter { private static Thing1Formatter thing1Formatter = new Thing1Formatter(); public format(Thing2 thing) { thing1Formatter.format(thing.innerThing1); } } Yes, I know the HashMap and a bit more code can fix that too. But the "instanceof" seems so readable and maintainable by comparison. Is there anything simple but not smelly?

  • What is an efficient way to serve images (PHP)?

    Hey guys currently I am thinking of serving images using an image handler script. I have two sources of images. One is from my web images folder where images that are used to construct my site interface are served. The other is in each users images folder where they can store their own images. I was thinking of giving each user image a unique id and then searching that id with the image handler script and serving the image, and changing the file name. The problem is that my site images folder does not have any information in the database and thus has no ids, should I just serve directly? Also this way of serving user images does not seem like the most efficient.     I have a DB with user accounts information. I've scheduled a CRON job which updates the DB with every new user data it fetches from their accounts. I was thinking that this may cause a problem since all requests are coming from the same IP address and the server may block requests from that IP address. Is this the case? If so, how do I avoid being banned? should I be using a proxy? Thanks

I have updated the MVC App Converter to convert projects from ASP.NET MVC 1.0 to ASP.NET MVC 2 RTM. This should be last the last major change to the MVC App Converter that I released previews of in the past several months. Download The app is a single executable: Download MvcAppConverter-MVC2RTM.zip (255 KB). Usage The only requirement for this tool is that you have .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 on the machine. You do not need to have Visual Studio or ASP.NET MVC installed (unless you want to open your project!). Even though the tool performs an automatic backup of your solution it is recommended that you perform a manual backup of your solution as well.
