• New Year's Resolutions and Keeping in Touch in 2011

  The run-up to Oracle OpenWorld 2010 San Francisco--and the launch of Fusion Applications--was a busy time for many of us working on the applications business at Oracle. The great news was that the Oracle Applications general sessions, sessions, demogrounds and other programs were very well attended and well received. Unfortunately, for this blog, the work wasn't done there. Yes, there haven't been many additional blog entries since the previous one, which one industry analyst told us "That's a good post!" That being said, our New Year's Resolution is to blog more frequently about what's been keeping us busy since Oracle OpenWorld San Francisco. • ANTS Memory Profiler 8 released!

  I’m excited to say that we’ve just released ANTS Memory Profiler 8! The big news is support for profiling .NET’s usage of unmanaged memory. There are two main parts to this. Firstly you can see a breakdown of unmanaged memory usage by module. This lets you see at a high level where unmanaged memory is being used – for example in the image below, it’s being used by a PDF generation library. Separately, when looking at a list of .NET classes, you can see how much unmanaged memory those classes are responsible for holding on to. You can also see that information for individual instances of those classes. Some clues you might need this: You’re using system objects or 3rd party components which deal with unmanaged memory under the hood (this includes things like the GDI+ functions used for working with bitmaps) Your application still relies on some legacy Delphi / C++ / etc code from left over from the days before your company moved over to using .NET You’ve used a previous version of ANTS Memory Profiler, and have ever seen a pie chart that looks something like this: You’ll also notice that the startup process has been entirely redesigned, bringing it in line with ANTS Performance Profiler 8, which was released earlier in the year. This makes it faster to start profiling and to run repeat profiling sessions, lets you profile using any browser instead of Internet Explorer, and also provides a host of stability improvements, particularly when launching websites in IIS. • Accessing and Updating Data in ASP.NET: Filtering Data Using a CheckBoxList

  Filtering Database Data with Parameters, an earlier installment in this article series, showed how to filter the data returned by ASP.NET's data source controls. In a nutshell, the data source controls can include parameterized queries whose parameter values are defined via parameter controls. For example, the SqlDataSource can include a parameterized SelectCommand, such as: SELECT * FROM Books WHERE Price > @Price. Here, @Price is a parameter; the value for a parameter can be defined declaratively using a parameter control. ASP.NET offers a variety of parameter controls, including ones that use hard-coded values, ones that retrieve values from the querystring, and ones that retrieve values from session, and others. Perhaps the most useful parameter control is the ControlParameter, which retrieves its value from a Web control on the page. Using the ControlParameter we can filter the data returned by the data source control based on the end user's input. While the ControlParameter works well with most types of Web controls, it does not work as expected with the CheckBoxList control. The ControlParameter is designed to retrieve a single property value from the specified Web control, but the CheckBoxList control does not have a property that returns all of the values of its selected items in a form that the CheckBoxList control can use. Moreover, if you are using the selected CheckBoxList items to query a database you'll quickly find that SQL does not offer out of the box functionality for filtering results based on a user-supplied list of filter criteria. The good news is that with a little bit of effort it is possible to filter data based on the end user's selections in a CheckBoxList control. This article starts with a look at how to get SQL to filter data based on a user-supplied, comma-delimited list of values. Next, it shows how to programmatically construct a comma-delimited list that represents the selected CheckBoxList values and pass that list into the SQL query. • Time Travel 101

  I’m thinking maybe I should have used Time Crunching 101 as the title instead… or maybe ‘Duh Duffy, where have you been? Everyone knows that!” Ok, so maybe you won’t actually learn how to travel through time from this post but you will learn how to cram more learning into one day. We all know you can’t make it to every conference, every presentation, or every training session. The good news is that many of those events make their content available to either watch online or to download for off-line viewing. The problem is who has time to sit and watch all those presentations in real time? Not me. One trick I use is to view the content at an increased play rate. Why listen to a boring speaker like me drone on for the entire length of the session when you can listen to them drone on in almost half the time. :-) I view nearly all off-line content with Windows Media Player though I’m sure you can implement this idea with any media playback software. The idea is changing the playback speed you view the content at. With Windows Media Player you can change the play speed from the menu system. Once you have the Play Speed Setting panel open you can specify the playback speed. Depending on the content and the presenter I can typically listen between 1.6 and 2.0 times normal speed. My Florida edumacation taught me that playing the video back at twice the speed means I’ll listen to it twice as fast and that means I can view it in almost 1/2 the time.  Too bad it won’t make me twice as smart. :-) I hope this helps you speed your way through more training content. • Do you need all that data?

  I read an amazing post over on ars technica (link: http://arstechnica.com/science/news/2010/03/the-software-brains-behind-the-particle-colliders.ars?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=rss) abvout the LHC, or as they are also known, the "particle colliders". Beyond just the pure scientific geek awesomeness, these instruments have the potential to collect more data than you can (or possibly should) store. Actually, this problem has a lot in common with a BI system. There's so much granular detail available in the source systems that a designer has to decide how, and how much, to roll up the data. Whenver you do that, you lose fidelity, but in many cases that's OK. Take, for example, your car's speedometer. You don't actually need to track each and every point of speed as it happens. You only need to know that you're hovering around the speed limit at a certain point in time. Since this is the way that humans percieve data, is there some lesson we should take in the design of data "flows" - and what implications does this have for new technologies like StreamInsight? • Get the Information You Need. Delivered.

  Untitled Document Don’t Take Chances with Alerts—Get Hot Topics When Oracle Support publishes an alert, how do you find out about it? I can see any number of ways you might stumble onto an alert that you need. For example, if you are visiting My Oracle Support in search of answers under the Knowledge tab and happen to notice, and click on, the Alert tab the under the Knowledge Article region, you might see an alert listed for one of the products you use. There are other ways… like subscribing to one of the Oracle Blogs and finding the alert in your RSS feed because the blogger decided to write up that topic for the latest post. I’m sure your colleagues sometimes pass on critical alerts for your products, I hope, giving you the information before you needed it. Well, no matter how you learn about an alert, the important point is that you get the correct information in a timely way. Right? I must admit, the ‘magic’ required to find out via these methods makes me nervous. Rather than leave it to chance, I think you need a more reliable way to stay informed and receive alerts for your products when Oracle publishes them. You may not be aware of it, but there is a better way. Oracle Premier Support Customers can leverage the “Hot Topics E-Mail.” You select the products and topics that interest you. Based on your choices, the system sends you the support related information when Oracle Support publishes it. This way you and I can both relax, knowing you’ll have ready access to the alerts you need, and enjoy the breadth of support related information you choose to subscribe to. This can include recently updated Knowledge base articles, new bugs, and product news. If I’ve convinced you, you will want to know how to set up and subscribe to the Hot Topics E-Mail. • Go Big or Go Home

  The Oracle Develop conference (#oracledevelop10), being co-located for the first time ever with JavaOne in San Francisco, is guaranteed to be the ultimate rush for developers this year. Where else can you go to learn about, interact with, and meet fellow devotees of the entire Oracle Development stack (welcome, Oracle Solaris)? This will also be the first time that the community space traditionally located at Oracle OpenWorld - and hosted by Oracle Technology Network, as always - will be present at the "developer" conference during this busy week. So, Oracle OpenWorld's loss is Oracle Develop's gain. And what a community space it will be: nearly 4,000 square feet for meeting space, contests and give-aways, consumption of various beverages, special speakers (Oracle ACEs among them, no doubt), and video-casting. The entire Oracle Technology Network crew will be on hand to "facilitate" your experience, of course. Even better, you can rub shoulders and share war stories with attendees from that "other" conference, JavaOne. (You have access to both conferences as a single package, so you may be having a conversation with yourself.) We call the whole enchilada "The Zone".   Welcome to ADF Mobile team's weblog.  My name is Joe Huang - I am the product manager for ADF Mobile.  Oracle ADF Mobile is a part of Oracle's Application Development Framework (ADF) that support the development of enterprise/business applications that run on mobile devices.  The development tool for this framework is of course Oracle JDeveloper.  As some of you may know, we currently support the development of mobile browser-based application - this part of product is called ADF Mobile Browser.  Additionally, we are close to release a technology preview of ADF Mobile Client, which supports development of on-device, disconnect capable mobile applications.  What's truly unique about ADF Mobile development process is that it's a very visual and declarative experience, while still allow power Java developers to completely extend the framework to their liking.  The framework also provides a rich set of services needed by an enterprise-grade mobile application - these services would literally take years to implement if they are to be built from the ground up.  However, by using JDeveloper and ADF Mobile, you get the entire framework at your service!In the coming entries, the ADF Mobile product development team will publish any news, best practices, our observation on mobile technology trends, or just our experiences in playing with "gadgets".  Be sure to check back on this page!Sincerely,Joe HuangOracle

• [MINI HOW-TO] Remove a Network Computer from Windows Home Server

  One of the cool features of Windows Home Server is the ability to backup and monitor the computers on your network. If you no longer need a machine on to be monitored or backed up, here we show you how to remove it. Remove Computer from WHS The process if straight-forward and basic –Open Windows Home Server Console and click on Computers & Backup. Right-click on the computer that you no longer need and click Remove. You’ll be prompted to verify that you want to remove the machine and delete all of its backup data. Check the box I am sure I want to remove this computer then click the Remove button. That’s all there is to it! The computer and all of its backup data is removed. Remember that if you remove a computer, all of its backup data will be deleted as well. If you no longer have the computer, you probably don’t need the backed up data anyway, but you’ll want to be sure you no longer need it before removing it.   Denis Pitcher, You posted this comment on my blog and some other blogs: Devteach's promotion for a one year MSDN subscription was not honoured and attempts to contact them result in a "we sent attendee info to MS, it's not our problem" response while attempts to contact Microsoft result in the suggestion that any queries should be redirect to Devteach. Hopefully not all attendees we're cheated though if you're considering attending a future Devteach it is recommended that you don't hold any expectation that they'll honour their promotions. I spoke to Jean-René Roy, DevTeach organizer and also to MSDN Canada folks.  Looks like the email you used to register for the conference is now bouncing (maybe a typo when you registered?).  That why you haven’t received any news about the offer.  The fact that you’re leaving the same comment on various blogs without your email address doesn’t help at all.  Thay want to contact you!  Also, looks like they never received your emails, maybe you used a the wrong email addresses. • Election 2012: Twitter Breaks Records with MySQL

  Twitter VP of Infrastructure Operations Engineering Mazen Rawashdeh shared news and numbers yesterday on his blog: "Last night, the world tuned in to Twitter to share the election results as U.S. voters chose a president and settled many other campaigns. Throughout the day, people sent more than 31 million election-related Tweets (which contained certain key terms and relevant hashtags). And as results rolled in, we tracked the surge in election-related Tweets at 327,452 Tweets per minute (TPM). These numbers reflect the largest election-related Twitter conversation during our 6 years of existence, though they don’t capture the total volume of all Tweets yesterday." "Last night, Twitter averaged about 9,965 TPS from 8:11pm to 9:11pm PT, with a one-second peak of 15,107 TPS at 8:20pm PT and a one-minute peak of 874,560 TPM. Seeing a sustained peak over the course of an entire event is a change from the way people have previously turned to Twitter during live events. • MySQL Enterprise Monitor 2.3.12 Is Now Available!

  We are pleased to announce that MySQL Enterprise Monitor 2.3.12 is now available for download on the My Oracle Support (MOS) web site. It will also be available via the Oracle Software Delivery Cloud in approximately 1-2 weeks. This is a maintenance release that contains several new features and fixes a number of bugs.
