• Most effective way to do daily standup meeting when a few people are remote

  I am a software developer in a small team of seven. We are not an Agile (with a big 'A') team but are experimenting with some aspects of agile. One of these is the daily "standup" meeting. The difficulty here is that for two days of the week we have at least one person working from home so the full team isn't available in the same room. What is the best way to carry out a daily standup in this situation? Some facts that may be relevant: We all work in a single open plan room. We use Skype in our company. We don't have any video conferencing capability. We all work the same hours so there are no timezone complexities involved. The development manager is one of the people who works from home one day a week. Things we have tried: Conference call using Skype: This is tricky for those in the office because you can hear people speak in the room and then a split second later through the headset. This can e very distracting. Conference phone: Awful experience. Hard to get them to work and poor quality audio. Text-based updates using Skype. This is not as engaging and is no different than just firing off a status email in the morning. I have seen other questions about remote collaboration but they are mainly about completely remote teams and/or teams that span multiple time zones. We are not affected by either of these problems. What can we do to make our standup meetings better in these circumstances?

• Bandwidth monitor for apache websites

  I am after a web application that will parse apache log files and record how much bandwidth the user has used. We have several virtual hosts that have custom log files and the I/O is recorded at the end of the logfile. However I can't find an application that will parse multiple log files and display a summary for each site. I believe awstats can do this but I want to be able to see all of my clients in one list. If there is something that integrates into cacti then that would be perfect.

• How do I redirect/rewrite to the FQDN URL without setting ServerName?

  Often in intranets, users will direct URLs to a hostname without supplying the FQDN. Example: http://internalHost Instead of http://internalHost.example.com I would like to redirect users / rewrite URLs so that everything will use the FQDN. Here's the catch: I don't want to set ServerName explicitly. (This is for a product which will be deployed in multiple intranets so we can't know the value of ServerName ahead of time). According to: http://wiki.apache.org/httpd/CouldNotDetermineServerName Apache uses a reverse lookup to determine a default FQDN. How can I make use of/reference that FQDN that Apache is using for a mod_rewrite or redirect?

• A synergy alternative that just works?

  I have been using Synergy for a few days now on my Windows 7 desktop (as server) and Macbook (client). Unfortunately, it seems to be buggy - often, the keyboard would stop working on the Mac to the point of forcing me to use the Macbook's keyboard. There are other weird problems as well. Is there a better/proprietary alternative to Synergy? It should support both Windows and Mac. I'd be more than willing to pay for it if it would just work. Edit: How is VNC/TeamViewer supposed to help? I'm not looking to merely access a remote desktop, I only want to share the keyboard/mouse with multiple computers (mac, windows) retaining their own display.

• How do you structure your shared code so that it is "re-findable" for new developers?

  I started working at my current job about 8 months ago, and its been one of the best experiences I've had as a young programmer. It's a small company, and both my co-developers are brilliant guys. One of the practices that they both have been encouraging is lots of code-reuse. Our code base is mainly C#, and we're using a centralized revision control system. The way the repository is currently structured, there is a single folder in which all shared class libraries are placed (along with unit tests for each library), and our revision control system allows for sharing or linking those libraries out to other projects. What I'm trying to understand at this point is how the current structure of the folder can be made more conducive for finding those libraries again. I've talked to the other developers about this, and they agree that it's gotten a little messy. I find that I am sometimes "reinventing the wheel" because I didn't realize that there was an existing piece of code that solved a particular problem. The issue is complicated further by the fact that we're sharing some code between ASP.NET MVC2, WinForms, and Windows CE projects, and sharing code between applications built against multiple versions of .NET. How do other people approach this? Is the answer in naming the libraries in a certain way or is it preferable to invest in some code-search software? Is the answer in doc comments? Should we be sharing libraries at all or should we simply branch the class libraries for re-use? Thanks for any and all help!

• Shared block device file system (cluster file system without networking)

  Is there any file system that can be mounted multiple times and supports concurrent file access for Linux? Basically I want something like a cluster file system but without the need to have a running network for a distributed lock manager. That can be very handy in connection with virtual machines that can share data with the host or another VM without the need to create a network link. This I want to avoid to keep the network architecture secure (virtual machine in DMZ) but share large files. No need to scale it up, just two machines that mount the same block device. Shouldn't it be possible to have file locking information right on the disk?

• Outlook connected to exchange does not send email

  I have multiple machines with Outlook 2010 connected to RackSpace hosted exchange server. Everything works fine, but emails send after a while since outlook started will not leave the outbox. Clicking Send & Receive will display the progress bar at 100% completed with no errors, but is not really finishing. The Cancel All button is still active. The emails in the outbox are bold & italic, so ready to be send. When I close outlook and start it again, the mails are sent immediately without problems. I have tried the following: Checked if there are any third party addins: only Microsoft Add ins Checked if the virus scanner is blocking anything, but McAfee is not doing this. Checked and Repaired the .ost file Increased the server time-out from 30 seconds to 60 seconds Nothing helped. Any suggestions?

• How can rotating release managers improve a project's velocity and stability?

  The Wikipedia article on Parrot VM includes this unreferenced claim: Core committers take turns producing releases in a revolving schedule, where no single committer is responsible for multiple releases in a row. This practice has improved the project's velocity and stability. Parrot's Release Manager role documentation doesn't offer any further insight into the process, and I couldn't find any reference for the claim. My first thoughts were that rotating release managers seems like a good idea, sharing the responsibility between as many people as possible, and having a certain degree of polyphony in releases. Is it, though? Rotating release managers has been proposed for Launchpad, and there were some interesting counterarguments: Release management is something that requires a good understanding of all parts of the code and the authority to make calls under pressure if issues come up during the release itself The less change we can have to the release process the better from an operational perspective Don't really want an engineer to have to learn all this stuff on the job as well as have other things to take care of (regular development responsibilities) Any change of timezones of the releases would need to be approved with the SAs and: I think this would be a great idea (mainly because of my lust for power), but I also think that there should be some way making sure that a release manager doesn't get overwhelmed if something disastrous happens during release week, maybe by have a deputy release manager at the same time (maybe just falling back to Francis or Kiko would be sufficient). The practice doesn't appear to be very common, and the counterarguments seem reasonalbe and convincing. I'm quite confused on how it would improve a project's velocity and stability, is there something I'm missing, or is this just a bad edit on the Wikipedia article? Worth noting that the top voted answer in the related "Is rotating the lead developer a good or bad idea?" question boldly notes: Don't rotate.

• Trouble migrating Joomla from Linux to Windows server

  I'm having some trouble migrating a Joomla website from a Linux server to a Windows server. The database came over fine, Besides that, all I've done is download all the files from the current site, and change configuration.php so the log and tmp directories show "./tmp/" and "./logs/" I keep having an error in the PHP log stating PHP Fatal error: Class 'JTable' not found I've downloaded the site multiple times now, and I'm convinced this is a configuration problem, and not a missing file problem. I've even tried installing a mod for backup on the linux box to try and migrate the site, but sadly the mod had problems installing. The new server is running IIS 7.5 on Windows Web Server. • Prepared statement alternatives for this middle-man program?

  I have an program that is using a prepared statement to connect and write to a database working nicely, and now need to create a middle-man program to insert between this program and the database. This middle-man program will actually write to multiple databases and handle any errors and connection issues. I would like advice as to how to replicate the prepared statements such as to create minimal impact to the existing program, however I am not sure where to start. I have thought about creating a "SQL statement class" that mimics the prepared statement, only that seems silly. The existing program is in Java, although it's going to be networked anyways so I would be open to writing it in just about anything that would make sense. The databases are currently MySQL, although I would like to be open to changing the database type in the future. My main question is what should the interface for this program look like, and does doing this even make sense? A distributed DB would be the ideal solution, but they seem overly complex and expensive for my needs. I am hoping to replicate the main functionality of a distributed DB via this middle-man. I am not too familiar with sql-based servers distributing data (or database in general...) - perhaps I am fighting an uphill battle by trying to solve it via programming, but I would like to make an attempt at least.

  One of key values that BPM promises is “Business Empowerment”. People closest to the processes, who participate in the process every day, are the ones who know most about the process. These are the people who run day-to-day operations, people who triage customer issues, people who envision improvements and innovations. It is, therefore, imperative that when a company decides to use BPM technology to automate their business processes, business people take the driver’s seat. BPM is not an IT only project. Oracle BPM suite has been designed keeping this core tenet of BPM, Business Empowerment, in mind. The result is business user centered design of Process Composer. Process Composer is designed to let business users document their processes, analyze them using simulation, create web forms, specify business rules and even run them in testing mode using process player, to see if the designed process meets their needs. This does not mean that IT has no role in this process. In fact, Oracle BPM Suite has made it very easy for Business and IT to collaborate. The same process can be shared among business, and IT stakeholders and each can collaborate to create model-driven, process based executable applications. A process may need to integrate with multiple systems via various mechanisms, and IT leads system and data integration effort. IT helps fine tune the performance of process applications and ensures that the deployment of process application meets scalability and failover standards. In this session, we saw Harish Gaur and Satya Narayanan from Oracle demonstrate roles Business and IT play in BPM projects and how Oracle BPM Suite enables business and IT collaboration to design and automate process based applications. They also discussed real life customer stories. User-A has two ssh private keys, and over time has used this public key on a number of servers He lost one of them, and has created a new pair. How does User-A, inform me (Sys Admin), that he has lost his key, and How do I manage all the servers to which he had access to (I do not have a list, of all Servers that User-A has access to). In other words, How do I recall, the public key associated with this Private key. REF: In the LDAP based Authentication, All Servers would communicate with a single Server repository for Authentication, and If I remove acess or modify the password on the Server, all Systems that use this LDAP for Authentication are secured, when User-A loses his password..

  I like the system of multiple gmail labels but am concerned about space used. I think that TB stores a separate copy of the whole email in every folder corresponding to a gmail label [including a copy in the "allmail" folder along with a separate copy in the each of the other folders]. Can I arrange to store a single copy of the email in TB,[perhaps in the allmail folder] with a shortcut type pointer from the individual folders to that single copy.[i.e for every email with one gmail label [eg personal] there are already 2 copies in TB, one in the allmail folder and a second in the "personal" folder

  Oracle OpenWorld Shanghai 2013 was held July 22nd – 25th at the International Expo Center in Shanghai, China. The conference drew over 19,000 attendees from 44 countries. In addition, 580 CxOs attended the Executive Edge program, and 430+ partners attended the Oracle Partner Network Exchange. The conference included a number of sessions on Big Data, Business Analytics, Business Intelligence and Enterprise Performance Management delivered by Oracle, our partners and customers.  I had the pleasure to attend the conference and delivered three sessions focused on Oracle’s Hyperion Enterprise Performance Management (EPM) applications. Each of my sessions was well-attended, and in a few cases was standing room only, so there is clearly a lot of interest in the China market in EPM. The EPM and BI demo pods in the DemoGrounds at the conference also received a lot of traffic. In addition to the conference sessions I delivered, I had several meetings with customers and partners in Shanghai.These sessions and meetings I attended made clear the interest that customers in China have in improving their planning, management reporting, financial reporting, and profitability management processes. In fact, with the China Ministry of Finance now standardizing on XBRL for annual reporting across multiple agencies in China, there is a great opportunity here for our disclosure management application. • Pushing complete notifications to client

  So with cqrs, we accept that consistency is eventual. However, that doesn't mean that the user has to continually poll, or that eventual means an update has to take more then 500ms to sync. For the sake of UX, we want to at least give the illusion of consistency, or if not possible, be as transparent as possible. With that in mind, I have this setup: angularjs web client, consumes webapi restful services, sends commands to nservicebus command handlers, saves to neventstore, dispatches events to nservicebus event handlers, sends message to signalr hub, sends notifications to angularjs web client so with that setup, theoretically some initiates a request the server validates the request sends out the necessary commands In the mean time the client gets a 200 response updates the view: working on it gets message sometime later: done, here's the updated data Here's where things get interesting, each command could spawn multiple events. Not sure if this is a serious no, no, or not, but that's how it is currently. For example, a new customer spawns CustomerIDCreated, CustomerNameUpdated, CustomerAddressUpdated, etc... Which event handler needs to notify the client? Should all of them in a progress bar style update?

• APC module causing strange error

  When I run php -v I get: PHP Warning: PHP Startup: Unable to load dynamic library '/usr/lib64/php/modules/apc.so' - /usr/lib64/php/modules/apc.so: undefined symbol: php_pcre_exec in Unknown on line 0 This isn't my first rodeo. I've setup APC multiple times. This is a MediaTemple Dedicated Virtual 4.0 with Plesk 11. Plesk 11 is the only thing essentially different from the other servers I've set this up on. I've verified that pcre-devel is installed. I've compiled APC from source as well as used pecl to install it. No difference. I also tried downgrading to APC 3.0.19, with no love.

• How can I set up VLANs in a way that won't put me at risk for VLAN hopping?

  We're planning to migrate our production network from a VLAN-less configuration to a tagged VLAN (802.1q) configuration. This diagram summarizes the planned configuration: One significant detail is that a large portion of these hosts will actually be VMs on a single bare-metal machine. In fact, the only physical machines will be DB01, DB02, the firewalls and the switches. All other machines will be virtualized on a single host. One concern that has been is that this approach is complicated (overcomplicated implied), and that the VLANs are only providing an illusion of security, because "VLAN hopping is easy". Is this a valid concern, given that multiple VLANs will be used for a single physical switch port due to virtualization? How would I setup my VLANs appropriately to prevent this risk? Also, I've heard that VMWare ESX has something called "virtual switches". Is this unique to the VMWare hypervisor? If not, is it available with KVM (my planned hypervisor of choice)?. How does that come into play?

• Recommended storage scheme for home server? (LVM/JBOD/RAID 5...)

  Are there any guidelines for which storage scheme(s) makes most sense for a multiple-disk home server? I am assuming a separate boot/OS disk (so bootability is not a concern, this is for data storage only) and 4-6 storage disks of 1-2 TB each, for a total storage capacity in the range 4-12 TB. The file system is ext4, I expect there will be only one big partition spanning all disks. As far as I can tell, the alternatives are individual disks pros: works with any combination of disk sizes; losing a disk loses only the data on that disk; no need for volume management. cons: data management is clumsy when logical units (like a "movies" folder) are larger than the capacity of any single drive. JBOD span pros: can merge disks of any size. cons: losing a disk loses all data on all disks LVM pros: can merge disks of any size; relatively simple to add and remove disks. cons: losing a disk loses all data on all disks RAID 0 pros: speed cons: losing one drive loses all data; disks must be same size RAID 5 pros: data survives losing one disk cons: gives up one disk worth of capacity; disks must be same size RAID 6 pros: data survives losing two disks cons: gives up two disks worth of capacity; disks must be same size I'm primarily considering either LVM or JBOD span simply because it will let me reuse older, smaller-capacity disks when I upgrade the system. The runner-up is RAID 0 for speed. I'm planning on having full backups to a separate system, so I expect the extra redundancy from RAID levels 5 or 6 won't be important. Is this a fair representation of the alternatives? Are there other considerations or alternatives I have missed? And what would you recommend?

  I have: a video which has mono audio inside a audio (mono) I'd like to merge those two to a single video file containing: video from #1 audio from #1 full left pan + audio #2 full right pan Is this possible in ffmpeg using 1 command? I've tried the following which almost does this but the video/audio gets out of sync: ffmpeg -i video.mp4 -filter_complex "amovie=audio.wav [r] ; [r] amerge" output.mp4 -y I've managed to do it with multiple commands: #1 create right panned audio ffmpeg -i audio.wav -ac 2 -vbr 5 audio-stereo.mp3 -y ffmpeg -i audio-stereo.mp3 -af pan=stereo:c1=c1 audio-right.mp3 -y #2 create left panned video ffmpeg -i video.mp4 -af pan=stereo:c0=c0 video-left.mp4 -y #3 merge the two ffmpeg -i video-left.mp4 -i audio-right.mp3 -filter_complex "amix=inputs=2" video-mixed.mp4 -y It does the job, but is it possible with 1 command?

• putty pageant - forget keys after period of inactivity

  in the environment where windows client computers are used to run putty to connect to multiple linux servers i'm considering moving away from password based authentication and using public/private key pairs with pass-phrases. using ssh-agent would be nice, but at the same time i'd like it to 'forget' the pass-phrases after given period of inactivity. it seems that putty's pageant does not provide such feature; what would you suggest as alternative? solutions that i'm considering: patching pageant code [might be tricky, code is probably quite rusty and project - sadly - stagnant] writing small custom application using GetLastInputInfo and killing pageant if the machine was idle for more than let's say 15 minutes [ yes, there'll be separate policy for locking the desktops as well ] using alternative ssh client and ssh agent. any suggestions? thanks!

  Recently I have started my journey Oracle SOA Suite and the first big hurdle everyone warned me off is setting up Oracle SOA Suite environment in our personal machine for learning. My laziness pushed me to search for much easier way than regular all download, configuration stuff and bang..! I found in the solution oracle site itself. Oracle SOA Suite on Virtual Box. For those who are not aware of Virtual Box, it’s a virtualization software which enables u to install multiple operating systems on a virtual hard drive which in turn managed by Virtual Box. In short pack ur Operating System, Software, Files everything into a VM and carry it wherever u go. Coming to Oracle SOA Suite, Oracle is offering a prebuilt VM for download which u can mount on ur Virtual box and that all you need. Here is the link for Virtual Box image of Oracle SOA Suite. Virtual Box can be downloaded here It’s a huge download. I’m yet to try it myself. Will get back to my writer again once I’m done.

• Payroll Customers Must Apply Mandatory Patches to Maintain Your Supportability

  The HRMS Suite of products has minimum required Rollup Patch (RUP) levels as well as additional mandatory patches that our customers must apply to ensure they are in compliance for support.  Without these patches, customers risk not being able to apply any fixes for issues they encounter as these RUPs and mandatory patches are the minimum patch level expected by Oracle Support and Oracle Development.  Core Payroll and International Payroll customers must apply the yearly Rollup Patch within 12 months of its issue. Legislative Payroll customers have additional requirements for the Rollup Patch, as the RUP generally is a pre-requisite for the next Year End/Fourth Quarter/Year Begin payroll processing supported by Oracle. These minimum RUP patches and other mandatory patches for your product or legislation are created with the following goals in mind: Compliance: Manage the people in your organization within the requirements of a specific country.
