  The second part of the advanced ADF on line ecourse is now live.  This covers the advanced topics of region and region interaction as well as getting down and dirty with some of the layout features of ADF Faces, skinning and DVT components.  The aim of this course is to give you a self-paced learning aid which covers the more advanced topics of ADF development.  The content is developed by Product Management and our Curriculum development teams and is based on advanced training material we've been running internally for about 18 months. • Is there benefit to maintain a large project with bad code?

  I'm currently maintain a large project with more than 100000 LOC. The code use the MFC as its framework, in genral, it only has interface part which heavily use the mfc api and a business logic part which full of bad code, confusing logic. The company has some small features delivered to the customer each year(most features are adding code to exisiting project, finding some reference of some api or variable and it' s no different with fixing 3-4 bugs ), most of the tasks are to resove issue and optimize performance . Like other company with maintaining position, it value people who knows much logic about its product. There are people who can quickly finish the job on such project, is it worth to train myself like such a programmer? Is there benifits to work on such project for a long time?

With so much attention being given to COLUMNSTORE and in-memory tables and stored procedures, it is easy to overlook how important tempdb is to performance. Speeding up tempdb I/O improves performance. The best way to do this is to not do the I/O in the first place. With SQL Server 2014, tempdb page management is smarter. • Recomendation for Webshop with API

  I'm searching for a webshop. The problem with my search is, that the webshop-software of my choice needs to have a useabel API or some interface for external applications. E.g. i need to place orders by an external application or need to get product descriptions or warehouse stock from the external application. I somehow would like to have a webshop wehere the webinterface is just one way to interact with the whole system. There are some other requirments, which have to be fullfilled, but i guess they are kind of common: running on linux MySQL (we already have MySQL-replication and backup in place) i like open source but i'm willing to pay for it, if it's worth it I found some webshops on the net - but perhaps you can tell me, if theres any hope for a webshop with a good API before i go and test all of them, on the first look i didn't find any docs about any interface to external applications for any of my search results. • 11.04 Wireless is disabled by hardware switch Hp Compaq nc6220

  Here is some backstory if it is helpful: I had Windows Vista on my computer and I wanted to use wubi to install Ubuntu, everything was fine until I booted into the OS. It said my wireless was disabled by a Hardware Switch. So I booted back into Vista and it disabled there too. I have gotten rid of vista and installed 11.04 instead. It still has this error and as far as I know there is no switch anywhere and the fn keys do nothing. • Are there Negative Impact of opensource on commercial environment?

  I know this is not a good fit for Stack Overflow but wasn't sure if it was good for this site also so let me know if its not and I'll delete it. I love programming for fun but my role in my company is not technical. I have always loved the hacker culture and have been trying to drive that openness within my company from day one. My company has a very broad range of products and there are a few that are not strategic to us so I wanted to open source them (so we can focus on what makes us unique and open source the products that every firm has). Our industry does not open source(we would be the first firm to try this) and the feedback I'm getting from my management team is either 1) we'll destroy the industry or 2) all competitive commercial firms will unite against us and we'll be wiped out either way. I disagreed on both points because I think transparency will only grow our industry and our firm (think of McDonalds/KFC sharing their recipe openly, people may copy you, competitors may target you, but customers also may feel more comfortable buying your product. The value add, I believe, is in the delivery and experience not in hoarding the recipe). It's a big battle in my firm right now between the IT people who have seen the positive effects of sharing and the business people who think we'll be giving up everything (they prefer we sell parts we want to opensource, but in their defense this is standard when divesting something). Our industry is very secretive and I don't want to put anyone(even my competitors employees) out of a job yet I don't want to protect inefficient people by not being open with everyone. Yet I've seen so many amazing technologies created in interesting ways just by giving people freedom to take apart code and put it back together. I'm interested in hearing people's thoughts(doesn't have to be to my specific situation, I'm looking for the general lessons). Its a very stressful decision(but one I feel I must make) because if we go the open source route then there will be no going back. So what are your thoughts? Does open sourcing apply generally or is it only really applicable to software? Is it overall good for people in the industry and outside? I'm actually more interested in the negativeness effects(although positive are welcomed as well) Update: Long story short, although code is involved this is not so much about code as it is more about the idea of open sourcing. We are a mid sized quant hedge fund. We have some unique strategies but also have the standard long/short, arbitrage, global macro, etc.. funds. We are keeping the unique funds we have but the other stuff that everyone else has we are considering open sourcing (We have put in years of work & millions of dollars into. Our funds is pretty popular and our performance is either in first or second quartile so I suspect there will be interest but I don't know to what extent). The goal is not to get a community to work for us or anything, the goal is to let anyone who wants to tinker with it do so and create anything they want (it will not be part of our product line although I may unofficially allocate some our of staff's time to assist any community that grows). Although the code base is quite large, the value in this is the industry knowledge and approaches we have acquired (there are many books on artificial intelligence and quant trading but they are often years behind what's really going on as most firms forbid their staff from discussing what they are doing). We are also considering after we move our clients out to let the software still run and output the resulting portfolios for free as well so people can at least see the results(as long as we have avail. infrastructure). I think our main choices are, we can continue to fight for market share in a products that are becoming commoditized, we can shut the funds/products down(and keep the code but no one outside of our firm will ever learn from it) or we can open source it and let people do what they want. By open sourcing it, my idea is that the talent pool in the industry will grow because right now most of our hires have the same background (CFA, MBA, similar school, same experience,etc.. because we can't spend time training people so the industry 'standardizes' most people and thus the firms themselves start to look/act similar) but this may allow us to identify talent that has never been in the industry before (if we put a GPU license then as people learn from what we did, we can learn from what they do as well and maybe apply it to other areas of our firm). I see a lot of benefits but not many negatives while my peers at the company see the opposite.

I'm a recent college graduate, and this would be my first "real" job out of school. • When removing a bunch of files from a website, is 301 to the start page appropriate? [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: What to do with random pages after a 301 redirect? Currently, we are working on modifying the contents of a website of one of our products. Since we are re-positioning the product, we would like to delete roughly 50% (around 200) of the pages of the website. My questions, in terms of SEO are: Would it have a negative effect if Google suddenly sees the large page drop? Is it OK to provide a 301 to the start page of the website for all removed pages?

• Would opencv be a good choice for image colour summarization?

  I would like to analyse a set of hundreds of thousands of product images (clothing, electronic goods etc) and retrieve the dominant colours in each. I'm only interested in the top 3 or 4 colours. The aim is to achieve a degree of certainty that x image is mostly red or image y is mostly orange and blue. The images are likely to be colour jpegs of reasonable quality and approximately 100kb in size. I would like to use C# and the solution should run on a Linux server, preferably using open source libraries. Would opencv be a good choice for this? What other libraries or specific algorithms might be helpful?

• Frustrated by the VS2012 'Light' and 'Dark' themes?

  Like me you may be have been frustrated by the lack of colour in VS2012. The flat look, reminicent of the early 'Gem' OS is bad enough, but when the only choices are a washed out white look or the deadly all-black look, it's not an easy product to work with.Fortunately MS themselves seem to have quietly taken notice of this, or at least one of their developers has, and a 'Color Theme Editor' extension has been released. This comes with some much better colour schemes (I'm using the blue one, which is fairly close to VS2010) and also allows you to create and edit themes youself.This extension doesn't come up when you search 'Extensions and Updates' but can be found at http://tinyurl.com/6rhkdejWith this, using VS2012 finally becomes a pleasurable experience.

• How to organize my 1000s of PDF?

  I have a huge collection of PDF. Mostly it consists of research papers, of self-created documents but also of scanned documents. Right now I drop them all in one folder and give them precise names with tags in the filename. But even that gets impractical, so I am looking for a PDF library management application. I am thinking of something like Yep for Mac, with the following features: PDF cover browsing (with large preview, larger than Nautilus allows) tagging of PDF (data should be readable cross-platform) possibility to share across network (thus rather flat files than database) if possible: cross-platform Mendeley seemed to be a good choice, but I am not only having academic papers and don't want to fill it all metadata that is required there. The only alternative I could find thus far is Shoka, but the features are limited and developments seems to have stopped already.

• Javascript Only Search Method [on hold]

  I need to put a search function on a website that is going to be on a CD-ROM with no access to the internet. It has 80 pages, and about 500 'items', so I'd prefer to not have to hard code 100's of 'if statements if possible. I've found a few programs you can buy that will index and generate results (Zoom Search, JSS Index, The German Guys') but there are odd quirks with each one. Plus I would rather code it myself to get complete control over it, and to really understand what it's doing. Basically searching for a few words would display the product image and description; clicking on that would take you the related URL. This is kind of complicated, I can't find an easy solution not dealing with hundreds of if Statements. Has anyone ever created anything like this or know a better method? I'm not really sure a better way to go about this. I've used PHP/MYSQL for search results before, but this cannot run any php.

• What am I risking if I don't update my SDK/JDK and bundled runtime/JRE every time there's a security update?

  It seems like there's a new major security hole patched in Java every other week, and I would assume the same goes for other development platforms. After years of frustration trying to get customers to install and configure a compatible JRE on their systems, we started bundling one with our software. (By bundling, I mean we extract a copy of the JRE in our installation directory--we don't install the JRE and configure it as the system default.) The problem is, it's a hassle having to keep that JRE up-to-date because first we have to retest everything to make sure the update didn't break anything (it has broken some of our third-party dependencies in the past). How seriously, if at all, are we putting our customers at risk if we don't update our SDK/JDK and the runtime/JRE that we bundle with our product every time there's a security update? Is it reasonable to just update on a periodic schedule--say, once every 6 months or so?

  Hopefully my last thread about V&V as I found the B.Boehm is text which I just do not understand well (likely my technical English is not that good). http://csse.usc.edu/csse/TECHRPTS/1979/usccse79-501/usccse79-501.pdf Basically he says that verification is about checking that products derived from requirements baseline must correspond to it and that deviation leads only to changes in these derived products (design, code). But he says it begins with design and ends with acceptance tests (you can check the V model inside). The thing is, I have accepted ISO12207 in terms of all testing is validation, yet it does not make any sense here. In order to be sure the product complies with requirements (acceptance test) I need to test it. Also it says that validation problems means that requirements are bad and needs to be changed - which does not happen with testing that testers do, who just checks correspondence with requirements.

But it looks like in Agile cross-functionality means not only combining different specialists, but making them mix. But where is the line drawn? Is it normal to ask developers to become testers for an iteration if it is required?
