  • Why does my ftp(e)s server fails like half of the time

    I have this discussion at work regarding our ftp server running via vsftpd. Initially, we have opted to serve ftpes instead of sftp because this seemed the most flexible and straightforward solution for our server to have secure file transmission. Afterwards, our ftp server seems to be a source of issues for our end users. Half of the time, users complain about not working ftp connections. I must say, i tested our FTP trough different infrastructures (=in the field, at random times at random places) and indeed, sometimes behind some configurations (=no idea how they are configured, because the 'field' testing), i recieve errors. Some of the are: Error: Failed to retrieve directory listing (filezilla) Furthermore, behind my basic home configuration, everything seems to be running fine. I (think I) did all the basic configuration checks (passive mode?, firewall for all ports?, ...) and can't seem to find the source. Being a bunch of techies at our small office, yet knowing nothing about infrastructure, some start suggesting that ftps protocol could be the source of issues. ("No, i only knew sftp so far" "Ftps is not widespread"). I, however, strongly doubt this hypothesis, since reading around on the www, asking questions on serverfault, everyone seems to deny this.   • How can I get mouse capture to work in virtualbox when I move guest window to second monitor?

    I'm running VirtualBox on a Win7 host. Guest OS is Centos. My setup is a laptop (screen 1) with a huge external monitor (screen 2). I'm only telling Centos there is one monitor though. When I start up VirtualBox on screen 1, the mouse capture works fine. I don't have mouse integration because (I think) the kernel on Centos is too old to support it. That's fine, I don't mind doing the Right-Control thing. The problem I have is that when I drag the whole VM window over to my second monitor, the mouse capture doesn't work right anymore. I click inside the VM and can move the VM cursor a little bit, but I can't always get to the edges of the VM screen -- before I get all the way to an edge, the cursor will escape from the VM as if I had hit right-control. But it's still captured according to the icon, and if I then hit right-control, the guest cursor jumps to a different screen location. My workaround: if I have the VM window mostly on screen 2, but a small corner of it still on screen 1, then the mouse capture works correctly. Is there a setting to make this work better?

  • How do I setup routing for two companies with different Internet connections on the same LAN?

    Here's the setup: Two companies (A & B) share office space and a LAN. A 2nd ISP is brought in and company A wants its own Internet connection (ISP A) and company B wants its own Internet connection (ISP B). VLANs are deployed internally to separate the two companies' networks (company A: VLAN 1, company B: VLAN 2, shared VOIP: VLAN 3). With separate VLANs it's simple enough to use separate DHCP servers (or separate scopes on the same server) to assign the default gateway to each company's gateway for their Internet connection. Static routes can be created on each gateway to point traffic destined for the other company's VLAN or the voice VLAN so that all nodes are reachable as expected. However, I think this is a form of asymmetrical routing, right? (The path from node A1 to node B1 is not the same as the path back from node B1 to node A1). Can I set up policy-based routing to correct this? In that case, can I assign the same default gateway to every device on all VLANs and create a routing policy on a L3 switch to look at the source address and forward traffic to the appropriate next hop? In that case, I want the routing logic to go like this: If the destination address is known, forward the traffic (traffic destined for a different VLAN). If the destination address is unknown, forward the traffic to ISP A's gateway if the source address is on VLAN A; or forward the traffic to ISP B's gateway if the source address is VLAN B. Am I thinking about this problem in the correct way? Is there another way to solve this problem that I am overlooking?

  • What tools can I use to locate the IP of a machine on my network?

    I am logged in to a remote Windows Server machine and am trying to attach it to a VPN for a LAN that I am also connected to locally from another Windows machine using Remotr Desktop. I can connect the remote machine to the VPN but when I do so, I lose my remote desktop connection. I am now in a situation where I know/think that the remote machine is on my LAN, but do not know what its current IP is and can therefor not connect to it again. I do not have any control over the infrastructure, all I have is a remote machine that I do control, and another machine that I also control that is connected to the same LAN as I'm trying to get the remote machine on using the existing VPN. What tools are available for Windows to allow me to locate the machine on my LAN again? I am imagining that there must be a tool that broadcasts the machines new IP using multicast, or tries to log in to a server component running somewhere with a know IP. Effectively, I am looking for some software that I can run on my remote machine, as well as my local machine, to allow me to discover the new IP address (on the LAN) assigned to the remote machine after connecting to the VPN.

  • Using GPO to collect data about VMware view activity

    Our security group wants us to begin logging data for external access to our view enviroment. At first we thought that view security would be logging all source ip's that are external in nature so if for some reason there is an intrusion we would have record of it there. Of course our firewall logs all that information but correlating it to view is sketchy at best with our current implementation. We know on viewdesktops there is a set of keys in VolitateEnviroment that contains stuff such as source ip and username, etc. We have a script in place that, when run as a logon script attached to a user account in AD collects the information as we need it. If we have a GPO run the same script the information does not get collected. We feel like there is a piece of the puzzle we're missing but we don't know what. If anyone knows what we're forgetting or misconfiguring that would be great, or if you have a better way of us collecting external source ip's for view specifically we'd be interested in that as well.   • Confused with creating an ODBC connection, apparently I have two separate odbcad32.exe files?

    Alright, this is my first time working with this so forgive me if I'm a little confusing or vague. I have a server with Windows Server 2008 Standard without Hyper-v (6.0, Build 6002). I'm running a small website off this server and using a Microsoft Access database to store some information coming in through the website. I'm sure the PHP I have written to open the ODBC connection is correct as it has worked for me when I created this website in a testing environment on a laptop. My current issue now is that it seems like I have two different odbcad32.exe's, and one doesn't appear to have a driver for a .accdb file, and only a .mdb file. The other has a driver for both. The first one I speak of has a driver titled 'Driver do Microsoft Access (.mdb)', the second one has a driver titled 'Microsoft Access Driver (.mdb, .accdb)'. I access the first odbcad32.exe by going to C:\Windows\SysWOW64\odbcad32.exe, and then the one that seems to have the driver I need I go to Control Panel-Administrative Tools-Data Sources(ODBC) and simply create a new connection in the System DNS tab. Whenever I make changes to the one that I access through the Control Panel, I see no changes, however if I use the odbcad32.exe file in SysWOW64 I do get some changes in the errors that come back to me. The main difference I noticed is that when I set up an ODBC connection with the Control Panel method it said it simply couldn't find the ODBC connection, but when I made a .mdb connection in the SysWOW64 one (and pointed it to a .accdb file) it says Cannot open database '(unknown)'. It may not be a database that your application recognizes, or the file may be corrupt. Which makes it seem like it is this odbcad32.exe version in SySWOW64 that is being recognized as the 'correct' one. Is there any way to fix this? I've tried to be as thorough as possible but if I've been confusing or left anything out let me know.

  • solution for an offline server

    I'm trying to setup a development server at work that will ideally be able to test drive a couple of projects in PHP, Rails, or Django (not always running at the same time). I develop the apps locally on a Mac and then I'll put the projects up on this server for testing with my actual users (non-techies) before deploying to a production server. My problem is that we have a very poor internet connection (almost negligible) at work and doing the usual apt-get/yum/ports (make, clean, install) processes for setting up servers always get their packages from online repositories somewhere. I know I could probably download the source and then compile them myself but that's going to be too much of a hassle for me. I'm thinking about two solutions: Plan A: Run a server VM on my Mac and then use this VM as the source repository for the offline server. I've read about Ubuntu's apt-proxy and it seems to be good enough though I haven't tried it yet. I'm not sure if this is possible but can I simply do apt-get install nginx --downloadonly so that the package and its dependencies will be downloaded into my VM and my server can use the VM as the source repo for apt-get? Plan B: Run a server VM on my Mac (which I can setup/update easily when I'm home) and then clone the VM to the offline development server. Maybe I should simply make the server a VM host so I can simply copy the VM over. I think this is okay for the first-time setup but subsequent updates will take too long (cloning the VM image). If I was working on Windows, I imagine it'd be easier because most services have an installer file that I can download and then run at the server. If you could suggest another way, it would be much appreciated. Update: From Michael Hampton's answer, I found a possible solution which is apt-cacher. I also found this page on Ubuntu's website. I wonder if there is a better tool than this one.

  • Looking for a powershell script that can pull a file from a set of PC's and FTP

    I'm looking to write a script (preferably powershell) that will essentially copy a file from a bunch of PC's and FTP it to a server. So the structure of the environment is that we have a file on multiple PC's (around 50 or so) that need to placed on a server. Sometimes one of the PC's may be turned off so the script would first need to ensure the PC is up and running (maybe a ping result), then it would need to go into a directory on that PC, pull a file off of it, rename the file, place into a source directory, then remove the file. Naming convention doesn't matter, but date/time stamp would be easiest. Ideally, it would be best to first move all the files to a source directory to save on FTP bandwidth, but since the files will be named the same, the files must be renamed during the move process. Move not copy because the directory needs to be empty so the file can be re-created the next day. So once moved to the source directory, now all the files need to be FTP'd to a server for processing. After all of this, we need to know which PC's on the list did not respond so we can manually retrieve the file so the script should output a file (txt is fine) that will show which PC's were offline. Everything is one domain and script will be run from an server with admin creds. Thank you!

    I'm running a local dns server on port 5300 to develop a software. I need my machine to use that dns but I wasn't able to tell /etc/resolv.conf to check on a different port. I searched a bit on google and I didn't find a solution. I set 127.0.0.1 as nameserver on /etc/resolv.conf. This is my whole /etc/resolv.conf: nameserver 127.0.0.1 Could you please tell me how can I redirect outbound traffic on port 53 to another port?   • Installing .NET 3.5 SP1 on server broke WCF

    I installed .NET 3.5 SP1 on server which previously had .NET 3.0 SP2. Before install site was working perfectly. After install and subsequeny server restart, site displays but anything that makes use of the WCF service has stopped working. The exception log reports exceptions like the following when any calls are made to the client proxy: The communication object, System.ServiceModel.Channels.ServiceChannel, cannot be used for communication because it is in the Faulted state. The server's application event log gave the following errors after the install: Configuration section system.serviceModel.activation already exists in c:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727\Config\machine.config. Configuration section system.runtime.serialization already exists in c:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727\Config\machine.config. Configuration section system.serviceModel already exists in c:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727\Config\machine.config. which seems to be inline with the fact that anything WCF related has stopped working. I am not experienced in server configurations or WCF so looking for any assistance with this. Thanks!!     Hi, I am trying to add a WCF service reference to my web application using VS2010. It seems to add OK, but the web.config is not updated, meaning I get a runtime exception: Could not find default endpoint element that references contract 'CoolService.CoolService' in the ServiceModel client configuration section. This might be because no configuration file was found for your application, or because no endpoint element matching this contract could be found in the client element. Obviously, because the service is not defined in my web.config. Steps to reproduce: Right click solution Add New Project ASP.NET Empty Web Application. Right click Service References in the new web app Add Service Reference. Enter address of my service and click Go. My service is visible in the left-hand Services section, and I can see all its operations. Type a namespace for my service. Click OK. The service reference is generated correctly, and I can open the Reference.cs file, and it all looks OK. Open the web.config file. It works well this way, but cloning the List seems like such a hacky way to do this. While bound to Value, I've tried adding: RaisePropertyChanged("Value"); to the AddItemCommand and RemoveItemCommand, but this doesn't work, the ListView won't get updated. What is the proper way to do this?

    Hi, I am using the HtmlEditor Control included in the AjaxControlToolkit (patched version v62210 because I needed some of the included fixes). Unfortunately the textarea in the Html Editor control is never displayed in Chrome and Safari (both latest version). It doesn't matter if there is text in it or not. It does work on the AjaxControlToolkit Sample page with both browsers though. Any ideas?

    Hello, I have an AutoMapper issue that has been driving me crazy for way too long now. A similar question was also posted on the AutoMapper user site but has not gotten much love. The summary is that I have a container class that holds a Dictionary of components. The components are a derived object of a common base class. I also have a parallel structure that I am using as DTO objects to which I want to map. The error that gets generated seems to say that the mapper cannot map between two of the classes that I have included in the CreateMap calls. I think the error has to do with the fact that I have a Dictionary of objects that are not part of the container‘s hierarchy. I apologize in advance for the length of the code below. My simple test cases work. Needless to say, it’s only the more complex case that is failing.
