• Man machine interface command syntax and parsing

  What I want is to add possibility to interact with application, and be able to extract information from application or event ask it to change some states. For that purpose I though of building cli utility. The utility will connect to the application and send user commands (one line strings) to the application and wait for response from the application. The command should contain: - command name (e.g. display-session-table/set-log-level etc.) - optionally command may have several arguments (e.g. log-level=10) The question to choose syntax and to learn parse it fast and correctly. I don't want to reinvent the whell, so maybe there's already an answer out there.

• Processing file uploads before object is saved

  I've got a model like this: class Talk(BaseModel): title = models.CharField(max_length=200) mp3 = models.FileField(upload_to = u'talks/', max_length=200) seconds = models.IntegerField(blank = True, null = True) I want to validate before saving that the uploaded file is an MP3, like this: def is_mp3(path_to_file): from mutagen.mp3 import MP3 audio = MP3(path_to_file) return not audio.info.sketchy Once I'm sure I've got an MP3, I want to save the length of the talk in the seconds attribute, like this: audio = MP3(path_to_file) self.seconds = audio.info.length The problem is, before saving, the uploaded file doesn't have a path (see this ticket, closed as wontfix), so I can't process the MP3. I'd like to raise a nice validation error so that ModelForms can display a helpful error ("You idiot, you didn't upload an MP3" or something). Any idea how I can go about accessing the file before it's saved? p.s. If anyone knows a better way of validating files are MP3s I'm all ears - I also want to be able to mess around with ID3 data (set the artist, album, title and probably album art, so I need it to be processable by mutagen).

• WordPress query posts into two Divs

  I want to display my wordpress posts in a category in two divs. So for example: <div id="left"> POST 1 POST 3 POST 5 POST 7 </div> <div id="right" POST 2 POST 4 POST 6 POST 8 </div> So want I need to do is tell the query_posts to somehow start spitting out the first 4 posts oddly and then evenly for each div. I don't want to have two seperate WP_Queries as this is a category.php file and needs to have the default loop. Not quite sure how to do this. Any help much appreciated.

How can I: generate a UTF-16 byte array that lacks a BOM, from a string? convert from a byte array that contains UTF-16 chars but lacks a BOM, back to a string?

• Shark tool on iphone crashes

  Hi, I am trying to use Shark to profile my app. However, it crashes after I hit "stop" and it analyzes and then goes to "load session". Only once when I decided not to select my app but chose to target "everything" did it actually display some trace. However, I could not reproduce this case. Does anyone have any idea what might be going wrong? Could it be something to do with the wrong version of Shark or my SDK or some other detail? I have the latest SDK and am running 3.1.3 on the phone. The various documentation I've found on google or via Apple's docs don't seem to be terribly helpful, so if anyone has found some that's useful, I'd love to see it. Thanks.

• Web form / CGI scripting: User enters "word", IFrame displays "word".html

  Okay, I'll admit being a designer, I don't know much about how data is handled from the servers in forms... (basically the whole programming part). Basically I have a text field that the user types something like "apple", this gets sent to the server and then displays the apple.html page that I have in a directory in an IFrame. If anyone can show me how to do this in a PHP script or Perl, would be great thanks! I think this is good start, it gets more complicated than this... I later have to convert the "apple" into something like 2321 and display 2321.html instead. If anyone can find a CGI script that does this, thanks!

• Autoplay an Audio File on Mobile Safari

  Hey guys, I've got a little system dashboard web app that I've written, replete with alarm notifications. I've had it working for quite some time on mobile safari, but recently wanted to add audio to the alarm notifications to allow me to easily know when there are alarms and I'm not looking directly at the display. The alarm notifications are populated through a (relatively) constantly polling ajax request that pulls in and displays an alarm banner if alarms are present. I wanted to add an auto-playing 'alarm' sound as well, but no dice for Safari Mobile. I've tried using HTML5 and embedded objects with no avail. The Apple documentation does state that you can't auto-play an audio file and it must be activated through user action to conserve bandwidth. Has anyone found a way around this in a WLAN setting?

  Hello fellows, what's up? :-) I have one problem and i hope you can help me with it. One friend of mine have a simple solid html website and i implemented little php; CRUD system for articles... problem i came across is placing and getting cyrillic characters from mysql database. What i want to achive is next: In the main navigation there are some separated sections, whose names, ids and item's order i want to place in mysql and than to pull names and to put each name as a link. Names are supposed to be cyrillic characters. The problem comes when i, using php mysql_fetch_assoc function, try to display names which are inserted with cyrillic characters in database row, collation of row is utf8_general_ci, and i end with ????? insted of original characters. If i submit cyrillic characters via submit form to mysql it shows something like this У. How can i solve this, thanks in advance!? :-)

• How do you handle browser cache with login/logout?

  To improve performances, I'd like to add a fairly long Cache-Control (up to 30 minutes) to each page since they do not change often. However, each page also displays the name of the user logged in (like this website). The problem is when the user logs in or logs out: the user name must change. How can I change the user name after each login/logout action while keeping a long Cache-Control? Here are the solutions I can think of: Ajax request (not cached) to retrieve and display the user name. If I have 2 requests (/user?registered and /user?new), they could be cached as well. But I am afraid this extra request would nullify my caching performance-wise Add a unique URL variable (?time=) to make the URL different, and cancel the cache. However, I would have to add this variable to all links on my webpage, not very convenient code-wise This problems becomes greater if I actually have more content that is not the same for registered users and new users.

• Added tagging to existing model, now how does its admin work?

  I wanted to add a StackOverflow-style tag input to a blog model of mine. This is a model that has a lot of data already in it. class BlogPost(models.Model): # my blog fields try: tagging.register(BlogPost) except tagging.AlreadyRegistered: pass I thought that was all I needed so I went through my old database of blog posts (this is a newly ported blog) and copied the tags in. It worked and I could display tags and filter by tag. However, I just wrote a new BlogPost and realise there's no tag field there. Reading the documentation (coincidentally, dry enough to be used as an antiperspirant), I found the TagField. Thinking this would just be a manager-style layer over the existing tagging register, I added it. It complained about there not being a Tag column. I'd rather not denormalise on tags just to satisfy create an interface for inputting them. Is there a TagManager class that I can just set on the model? tags = TagManager() # or somesuch

• Data table to Excel conversion leaves my server side button non responsive in SharePoint WebPart

  We have a web part on which we display some data in a grid. We are exporting grid's underlying datatable to Excel and displaying Open - Save - Cancel dialouge box on click of a server side button. Following is the code we are executing on click of server side button. this.Page.Response.Clear(); this.Page.Response.AppendHeader("Content-Disposition", "attachment; filename=MyTasks.xls"); this.Page.Response.ContentType = "application/ms-excel"; this.Page.Response.Write("...here goes my well formated html...."); this.Page.Response.End(); Problem is that when i click on Cancel in the diaglouge box then dialogue box to Open/Save excel disappears but all the server side buttons placed on my web part becomes non responsive, on click of any of those buttons their server side click event does not get fired !!! • SharePoint People editor control - UpdatePanel postback issue

  Hi I've a people editor control inside an update panel. During postback, I need to update the value of people editor control based on some selection. Though the value is getting updated, it is not being persisted on postback. I can see the value being updated when I debug. All other controls inside the update panel are working fine and their values are updated on postback. I have read blogs that we need to set the style attribute "display:block" on postback, but that's not working for me. Any suggestions highly appreciated. Thanks

• How to limit a google calendar xml / rss feed by date range (not working!!)

  For the life of me I cannot get my google calendar xml feed to only display events within a certain date range. I know that start-min and start-max are supposed to limit the output (according to these posts: (links to posts deleted because I am a newbie and can only post one hyperlink argh) BUT I CAN'T GET IT TO WORK. It keeps showing lot of things outside the range. I created a sample calendar and made it public. It is some events the first week of april. Can anyone show me how to construct a request that only returns those three events from the first week in april? I'll GLADLY and GRATEFULLY paypal $10 to anyone who helps me break through on this.   I a writing a gallery app in php. The images are dynamically displayed through php. On each load of the page, not all images are showing. it does this randomly, on each load. I have not had this problem before, as I am new to php.   I need to display certain content inside a popup window, and the body element must be 320px by 300px for styling purposes So I do the following: %p = link_to "Play in popup", popup_podcast_path(@podcast), :popup => ['new_window','height=300,width=320,toolbar=no,location=no,directories=no,status=no,menubar=no,scrollbars=no,resizable=yes'] Firefox does exactly what I ask it to do, it displays a popup window, with a page body that is 320px wide and 300px high, so my content fits perfectly inside. But Chrome includes the browser frame dimensions when sizing the popup, which means that the body element is less than the required size.... i.e. if the browser titlebar is 10px high, then this is subtracted from the space allocated to the body element How do I tell Chrome, that I want the body element to be 320 by 300, and that I dont want it to subtract the width and height of the browser frame from body element dimensions It's a bit like the old box-model problem where FF and IE added padding in different ways except firefox adds the browser frame outside the desired 320x300 size, and Chrome is adding it inside

• lwjgl 101: How can I write applets?

  I have a working app in lwjgl. It doesn't do much yet; I've just started, but it does compile and run like it's supposed to. I want to make it into an applet. I've followed the guide here, and I have an applet that runs nicely and displays text and such in the applet area and can access the functions of lwjgl (like Sys.alert), but I can't figure out how to get opengl to actually render. I've tried extending an AWTGLCanvas and calling this.add(myAWTGLCanvas), where this is the Applet that I'm using, but... nothing. The initGL() and paintGL() methods never get called. I wonder if I'm supposed to be doing something with Display, but that's not for applets, right? Help? Also: This counts as a "beginner" question, right? • Running custom Javascript on every page in Mozilla Firefox

  I have a custom piece of Javascript which I would like to run on every web page from specific domains, or perhaps simply on every web page. (If you are wondering: it is not malicious. It allows to display formulas by using MathJax.) Is that possible? I tried including it in userContent.css, that of course did not work. A simple Greasemonkey script I tried did not insert it. Is it because of the security precautions? (Which would be very logical). Still, there should be a way to do it on the machine I physically control, by changing something in Mozilla chrome directory, shouldn't it? Anyway, how can I do this for myself?

• LINQ to SQL Web Application Best Practices

  In my experience building web applications, I've always used a n-tier approach. A DAL that gets data from the db and populates the objects, and BLL that gets objects from the DAL and performs any business logic required on them, and the website that gets it's display data from the BLL. I've recently started learning LINQ, and most of the examples show the queries occurring right from the Web Application code-behinds(it's possible that I've only seen overly simplified examples). In the n-tier architectures, this was always seen as a big no-no. I'm a bit unsure of how to architect a new Web Application. I've been using the Server Explorer and dbml designer in VS2008 to create the dbml and object relationships. It seems a little unclear to me if the dbml would be considered the DAL layer, if the website should call methods within a BLL, which then would do the LINQ queries, etc. What are some general architecture best practices, or approaches to creating a Web Application solution using LINQ to SQL?

I've completed the MVC Music Store tutorial, and now I'm trying to add some administrator functionality - practice as I will have to do this in an MVC application in my job. The application is using the aspnet membership api, and what I have done so far is created a view to list the users. What I want to be able to do, is click on the users name in order to change their password. To try and carry the username to the changeUserPassword controller (custom made). I registered a new route in the global.asax.cs file in order to display the username in the URL, which is working so far. This is in order to pass it through to enable me to reset the password. Having debugged through the code, it seems that 'username' is null. How can I get this to work so that the username carries over from the Html.RouteLink, to the changeUserPassword action? • counter variable not working?

  Just like many things in rails, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't... Showing app/views/admin/products/_variant.html.erb where line #8 raised: undefined local variable or method `variant_counter' for #<ActionView::Base:0x107f7ae10> I only want to display variant_counter from partial _variant. This was the render caller code: <%= render :partial => '/admin/products/variant', :collection => product.variants %> The funny thing is, I have been using partial counter heaps number of times, somehow now I encountered this issue. Could anybody point me out what are there to find out what may went wrong?
