• Trying to build/install patched gtk3-engines-oxygen to test bugfix, get shared changelog.Debian.gz is different from other instances of package

  I want to just quickly test the patch in this bug report to gtk3-engines-oxygen so it can go upstream. I could test it either temporarily or permanently; I would just like to do it. I currently have the package installed.   Our lease is up on our US-based office-space in July, so it's back on my radar to evaluate our office-space situation. Two of our partners rather like the idea of leasing a house rather than standard office-space. We have 4 partners and one employee. I'm against the idea at this moment in time. Pros, as I see them Easier to get a good location (minimize commutes) All partners/employees have dogs. Easier to work longer hours without dog-duties pulling people back home More comfortable bathroom situation Residential Internet Rate Control of the thermostat Clients don't come to our office, so this would not change our image The additional comfort-level should facilitate a significantly higher-percentage of time "in the zone" for programmers and artists. Cons, as I see them Additional bills to pay (house-cleaning, yard, util, gas, electric) Additional time-overhead in dealing with bills (house-cleaning, yard, util, gas, electric) Additional overhead required to deal with issues that maintenance would have dealt with in a standard office-space Residential neighbors to contend with The equation starts to look a little nasty when factoring in potential time-overhead, especially on issues that a maintenance crew would deal with at a standard office complex. Can this be a good thing for a software development shop?

• I can't get my Macbook Pro to print to an IP addressable printer

  Running Macbook Pro OS X 10.6.3 Accessing an HP OfficeJet 5610 plugged in the USB port of a US Robotics router. I tried several combinations of: Protocol: Internet Printing Protocol (IPP) Line Printer Daemon (LPD) HP JetDirect (socket) Address: http://192.168.1.10:1631/printers/HP5610 192.168.1.10:1631/printers/HP5610 http://192.168.1.10:1631 192.168.1.10:1631 192.168.1.10 ... Driver: HP OfficeJet 5600 Series Whenever I try to print, it fails while saying "connected to printer" or "Printer is busy...zill try again in X seconds" Both Windows 7 and Windows XP computers on the network can successfully access this printer, identifying it as "HP5610 on http://192.168.1.10:1631/" I tried clearing all tasks and printers (ctrl-click in the menu), and resetting it to (socket, http://192.168.1.10:1631/printers/HP5610, HP5600 series) but to no success.

• Filtering attachment types in Google Apps (free Google Business)

  We have Google apps in our company for mail delivery, our business can't pay the business version yet, however, we need to control the attachment types that employees download. We recently switched from another hosting provider who recomended us to plug Google Apps for mail when we moved the domain, we had a firewall before which was able to prevent certain file types to be downloaded. I know the business version has section for filtering mail (postini services). Is there a hack around my problem? Anyone ever had this problem? Thank you! UPDATE: The main problem is gmail apps uses ssl connection, can this be changed ? how can i get the firewall to filter files only allowing *.doc, *.xls y *.pdf.

• The clock problem - to if or not to if?

  Let's say, we have a simple digital clock. To "power" it, we use a routine executed every second. We update seconds part in it. But, what about minutes and hours part? What is better / more professional / offers better performance: Ignore all checking and update hour, minute and seconds part each time, every second. Use if + a variable for checking, if 60 (or 3600) seconds passed and update minute / hour part only at that precise moments. This leads us to a question, what is better -- unnecessary drawings (first approach) or extra ifs? I've just spotted a Javascript digital clock, one of millions similar on one of billions pages. And I noticed that all three parts (hours, minutes and seconds) are updated every second, though first changes its value only once per 3600 seconds and second once per 60 seconds. I'm not to experienced developer, so I might me wrong. But everything, what I've learnt up until now, tells me, that if are far better then executing drawing / refreshing sequences only to draw the same content.

• How to package static content outside of web application?

  Our web application has static content packaged as part of WAR. We have been planning to move it out of the project and host it directly on Apache to achieve the following objectives. It's getting too big and bloating the EAR size resulting in slower deployment across nodes. Faster deployment times. Take the load of Application Server Host the static content on a sub domain allowing some browsers (IE) to load resources simultaneously Give us an option to use further caching such as Apache mod_cache apart from the cache headers we send out to browsers. We use yuicompressor-maven-plugin to aggregate and minimize JS file. My question is how do package and manage this static content out side of the web application? My current options are. New maven war project. Still use the same plugin for aggregation and compression. Just a plain directory in SVN and use YUI/Google compressor directly. Or is there a better technology out there to manage static content as a project?

• Recovering an old website

  I have a client with an old website that somebody setup for him long ago. The guy who set it up is unreachable, so how do we go about trying to take it over? A WHOIS lookup got us some contact information, but I don't have great hopes for that (it hasn't been update in quite some time). The nameservers are ns1.theplanet.com and ns2.theplanet.com, and we will try calling them, but I don't expect we'll be able to get much from them. What are our options? Is there a way I can discover the registrar so we can try contacting them as well? EDIT: It would be sufficient if we could get control of the domain name or put in some sort of redirect to the new site. Either hosting was prepaid for quite some time, or someone else is still paying for it, so we don't care about that.

• SEO: Getting site to show in location-specific searches

  I'm really new to this SEO world and I've been reading a lot to try and figure it out. We have a site moodbond.com that allows users to browse/create events anywhere. And we fill it with content from the main cities in the US. We would like it to show for searches for things like "events in san francisco" or "what to do in new york", however, since the site is not really location-specific, I'm not really sure where to begin. I've been thinking a couple of things, maybe you can help me decide if these would be a good way to start or if I should try something different. 1- Allow something like location-specific urls (e.g. moodbond.com/browse/san-francisco) could just show the main page centered in San Francisco. 2- Change the headers/title of the page so it adapts automatically to the city being browsed (and change this dynamically as the user changes the location of the map). 3- Add internal links to different locations (e.g. add a link at the footer of the page that says "Events in Seattle" that makes the site load events in that city. (this would probably depend on implementing #1). What do you guys think? will any of these really help or should I look for a different approach? any advice is welcome. Thanks

• Sneak Preview - New CodePlex UI

  We have been busy the last several months working to improve the overall experience for the CodePlex community. We have been working through some of the top requested items, such as our big announcement last week enabling Git. Something that is not explicitly on the feature request list are requests to update the web site look and user experience.  As Brian Harry mentioned, the Future of CodePlex is Bright, so it is time to start brightening up the place. Goals As with any sizeable change you need to decide the scope of changes you want to tackle. We decided that we would optimize on incremental improvements verses taking months to get a completely new experience released. Our goals with this user experience work is to refresh the look and feel of the site, introduce new visual elements and set up the site for future structural changes. So this is not the end, just the beginning. Early Views I want to set a few expectations first, these screen shots are not final, and we are still working through the content and final element placement. Feedback is always welcome, just take that in mind as you review the images. New CodePlex Home The navigation changed a good bit on the home page and we have moved the search to a more consistent location across the site.   User Profile Users Home Page The goal was to make it easier to find and take action on common tasks such as creating projects. • Yelp, Google's API for restaurants help

  Ok I have looked into this, and I'm not sure if anyone else has experience with it. I'm having termendous difficulties with Yelp and Google's API. To help explain what I am trying to do here is the concept of the website. We would have to pull restaurants based on user distance, and then randomize them based on quality of restaurant based on feedback from review websites (Yelp, Google, urbanspoon, zagat, opentable, kudzu, yahoo - doesn't have to be from all), and feedback from our users (on results page for the random restaurant users can select good recommendation/bad recommendation). There’s a lot we could calculate for our formula. Things that will dictate your results will be based on if you’re at home or work. If you’re at home you will have more time to drive out to the city to grab some dinner or lunch. If you’re at work we would have to recommend restaurants nearby as lunch is typically 30 minutes to a hour. A 30 minute lunch would require take out most likely or quick service. A hour lunch break you could dine in at a local fine dining restaurant. So in a nutshell, user comes to website. Select if they're at home or work, click submit and we will have a random restaurant selected for them to go. If they don't like it they can click retry and a new restaurant can show. The issue I am having is using the API to gather all the restaurants in the US. I know it can be done because there are similiar websites/apps that pull restaurants that are closest to you such as Ness, Alfred, and I believe there's two more but I can't remember the names. Anyone know if this can be accomplish?

• Assuming "clean code/architecture" is there a difference in "effort" between PHP or Java/J2EE web application development?

  A client asked us to estimate effort when selecting PHP as the implementation language for his next web-based application. We spent about a week exploring PHP, prototyping, testing etc., We are quite new to this language - may have hacked around it in the past but, let's go with PHP-noobs but application development experts (for the lack of a better, less flattering word :) It seems, that if we write, clean maintainable code, follow separation of concerns, enterprise architecture patters (DAOs etc.) the 'effort' in creating an object-oriented PHP based web-application seems to be the same for a Java based one. Here's our equation for estimating the effort (development/delivery time): ConstructionEffort = f(analysis, design, coding, testing, review, deployment) We were specifically comparing effort estimates in creating an enterprise application with the following: PHP + CakePHP/CodeIgniter (should we have considered others?) Java + Spring + Restlet It's an end-to-end application: Client: Javascript/jQuery + HTML/CSS Middle tier/Business Logic - (Still evaluating PHP/Java) Database: MySQL The effort estimates of the 1st and 3rd tier are constant and relatively independent of the middle tier's technology. At a high level with an initial breakdown into user stories of the requested features as well as a high-level SWAG on the sheer number of classes/SLOC that would be required for PHP doesn't seem to differ by much from what is required of the same in Java. Is this correct? We are basing our initial estimates on the initial prototyping/coding we've done with PHP - we are currently disregarding fluency with the language as a factor, since that'll be an initial hurdle and not a long term impediment IMHO (we also have sufficient time to become quite fluent with PHP). I'm interested in knowing the programmers' perspective with respect to effort when creating similar applications with either of the languages to justify choosing one over the other. Are we missing something here? It seems we are going against popular belief of PHP being quicker to market (or we being very fluent with Java have our vision clouded). It doesn't seem to have any coding/programming effort saving from what we/ve played around with.

• My windows keyboard is being "clever" with the quote keys - how can I stop it?

  I'm using windows 7 on a laptop. On the laptop keyboard, for some reason, the quote key (which has both double and single quote on it) is doing some "clever" annoying things: When I press single-quote (or double-quote), windows doesn't send any characters until I press it twice (resulting in '' or "") When I press it before a vowel, I get some kind of accented character. As I usually only write English, this is annoying. The backtick/tilde key is subject to similar behaviour. I have not attempted to set up my computer to process anything other than English. My keyboard appears to be (in so far as these things are standard on laptops) a standard US qwerty keyboard. How can I stop this happening?

• Get Func-y v2.0

  In my last post I talked about using funcs in C# to do async calls in WinForms to free up the main thread for the UI. In that post I demonstrated calling a method and then waiting until the value came back. Today I want to talk about calling a method and then continuing on and handling the results of the async call in a callback.The difference is that in the previous example although the UI would not lock up the user couldn't really do anything while the other thread was working because it was waiting for it to finish. This time I want to allow the user to continue to do other stuff while waiting for the thread to finish.Like before I have a service call I want to make that takes a long time to finish defined in a method called MyServiceCall. We need to define a callback method takes an IAsyncResult parameter.public ServiceCallResult MyServiceCall(int param1)...public int MyCallbackMethod(IAsyncResult ar)...We start the same way by defining a delegate to the service call method using a Func. We need to pass an AsyncCallback object into the BeginInvoke method. This will tell it to call our callback method when MyServiceCall finishes. The second parameter to BeginInvoke is the Func delegate. This will give us access to it in our callback.Func<int, ServiceCallResult> f = MyServiceCall;AsyncCallback callback =   new AsyncCallback(MyCallbackMethod);IAsyncResult async = f.BeginInvoke(23, callback, f); Now let's expand the callback method. • Virtual Windows Servers and Pagefile location [closed]

  Considering that Windows makes heavy use of the pagefile even with huge amounts of RAM available, is it not best to have this pagefile on the fastest disk possible as close to the virtual systems as possible? I'm thinking, RAM disk. Where I work, storage for VMs is out on a NAS/SAN. I'm worried that so much memory access is having to go across the network! As a side, I think its about time MS got rid of paging and told us to buy more DIMMS. UPDATE So this question has been downvoted??! Accessing a local spindle is C40,000 times slower than a DIMM, so going over the network will be even slower for hard faults. I don't know why I got the downvote, I'm certain that this is an issue unless there's some other mechanism in ESX/HyperV that manages this.

• how to warehouse data that is not needed from sql server

  I have been asked to truncate a large table in sql server 2008. The data is not needed but might be needed once every two years. It will NEVER have to be changed, only viewed. The question is, since I don't need the data on a day-to-day basis, what do I do with it to protect and back it up? Please keep in mind that I will need to have it accessible maybe once every two years, and it is FINE for us if the recovery process takes a few hours. The entire table is about 3 million rows and I need to truncate it to about 1 million rows.

• Excel cutting out down over 1024 characters

  I am using Excel 2003 to save a large file as a CSV. But when saving cells that contain over 1024 characters, it cuts out the characters beyond 1024. Per a previous question, I am using this official macro to save: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;291296&Product=xlw This macro in question is probably causing it, since I'm not using the normal Save As (in order to put quotes around every field). It may not be 1024 characters, but long cells are getting cut off. What in this macro is causing that?

  There used to be a check-box in preferences in Excel 2003 to disable moving down on Enter key after you edited a cell. Where could I find that setting in Excel 2007? <whining on>It drives me insane how microsoft trashes users skills and "fingers" memory to make what their new users may be will find easier. What about us, using these products for ten years?<whining off> I want to control moving around with arrow keys, and Enter to only return me from the cell editing mode to navigation, not moving down. I'm not in a data entry business!! I'm analyzing data, editing just few cells time-to-time.

• Is Apple getting out of the general purpose development platform business?

  I've been doing general ANSI C/Console C++/Java/Web development on Mac hardware for about ten years. I make no claims of objective superiority over other platforms, it just satisfies my personal tastes. With the success of the iPhone and the related App store there was some speculation that Apple would get out of the general purpose computer market, and become a closed software ecosystem, focusing on consumer appliances. I pooh-poohed the speculation at the time, but this week Apple announced that a) they were opening an App store for the Mac, b) Java applications would not be eligible for the App store, c) the Apple JVM was being deprecated and might not be available for future releases of OS X. I'm not a Java developer per se, but I work in a research lab that occasionally writes Java applications, and also depends on tools written Java. This has the potential to be a huge pain in the butt for us. As of now, there is no other JVM for OS X that we can point our end users to. Soy Latte and OpenJDK might be appropriate for developers, but the complexity of the installation makes them inappropriate for end users. Eventually I expect Oracle/SUN will produce a replacement JVM for OS X. More worrisome to me is that Apple used to specifically advertise that it was an excellent platform for scientific development, because they supported all major language platforms. Is the deprecation of their JVM a sign that this market no longer interests them?

"stmp is a process that binds to 25, waiting for email request that goes in from another stmp process(in another server) determined by the domain MX route that will send the message to port 25 if any email goes though the MX.domain.tld" that is in a nutshell how emailing work, am i right? or there is something wrong here? second, so if im right, we need to set a SMTP server so we can receive incoming emails from MX SMTP route right? ive googled though google and found two best STMP servers from my opinion, they are EXIM and POSTFIX, can anybody give us a simple tutorial installing and setting up an email piping for a fresh installed linux/centos? example *.domain.tld -> allinonepipe.php thanks.

• What exactly is bootstrap admin-template and how it is supposed to be used

  So this is my second ASP.NET MVC 4 project. It's decided that for this one we will use this template and it was said in a way that I felt really stupid for not knowing how exactly this template will help us and what exactly we gain by using it. I'm used to using HTML/CSS for the UI combined with jQuery. Now it seems that instead of jQuery we will be using bootstrap which as far as I understand is just another JS library created from twitter, so if that's it then this part is clear. What I really need to clarify for myself is what exactly this theme is used for, what is offering, why one would want to use such a theme? From what I see in the live demo maybe it's just a stack of premade controls that you can use in the front end along with bootstrap.js and maybe I'm just confused because on the page is shown as much as possible just for presentational purposes. If that's right, still I wonder where I can find info for the current theme, the controls that it offers and the functionality that I get and not least - how to use it. But still those are just my assumptions. What I really need is a clarification on what exactly is this theme for, what is the advantage using it, is there a good tutorials about how to use such themes in the context of ASP.NET MVC 3+. Also any additional info about this theme and generally on using themes in ASP.NET MVC will be much appreciated.

What I want is to start establishing basic configuration management for said servers, starting from installing Windows, installing and enabling various Roles and Features, setting up Services, Shares, Users and deploying webapps. PowerShell DSC looks promising, but it's not yet here and appears to be over-engineered, Puppet and the like are again not first-class. There's a bunch of tooks and TLAs like Windows ADK, DISM, OCSetup, etc. and it seems to me that the "Configuration Management" story on Windows is not precisely rainbows and unicorns. What I want is a Puppet/Chef-like, lightweight tool (no System Center Configuration Management, please) which would allow us to "version-control our server infrastructure" and bring all the benefits of CM. So, where do I look for the tool that does this kind of thing?

• BES 5.x issues when connecting to Exchange 2010 SP2 RU4

  Ever since we updated from SP1 RU4 to SP2 RU4 we have noticed that our BES devices will simply stop receiving email. This has occurred at least 5 times in the past few weeks. Today, while speaking with RIM support (a T3 contract), they said that they have reports of sporadic connectivity issues from some BES users. This has been occurring with Exchange 2010 SP2 RU4, and have no public information to give us. We were able to temporarily get things running by doing any or all of the following Restart the BES server Recreate the MAPI profile (deleted the keys in the registry) Restart the CAS servers Wait it out (2 hours) What other options should I take to resolve this issue?
