  • IIS, SSL, and Virtual Directories

    I'm running a webserver on WS 2k3, IIS 6.0. Some of the content is on that server, but most is in a virtual directory linked to another server. Everything works (almost) fine when no SSL is used. However, when using SSL, I cannot access the files in the virtual directory. Instead I get a generic error 500. Any advice?

  • Are these hacking attempts or something less sinister?

    I just had a look through our web server error logs, and Terminal services is reporting: "Remote session from client name a exceeded the maximum allowed failed logon attempts. The session was forcibly terminated." Hundreds of times, every 10.5 seconds or so for a period of about 5-10 minutes, once at 2pm yesterday and once again at about 1am this morning. We CURRENTLY have RDP open to the outside, as I am just completing the setup and now and then I/Others need to jump on from an outside office/location (VPN isn't an option) As these are so regular, am I right in assuming that they may be the result of some sort of dictionary attack? or could something like an internal admin's hung session cause such a mass of events? (Win Server 2008 R2)

    Hello everyone, following problem deals with MS Windows Server 2008 R2 with Hyper-V: Does anybody have an idea how to log processes which cause CPU utilisation more than X percent? I want to uncover an unexpected CPU load peak problem which occurs once a day in a regular fashion. Since it's a terminal server, all network connections time out and bandwidth tends to zero.

  • Why would i need extra IP adresses from my web host?

    I am moving to a new and cheaper host. My old one raised the prices suddenly by a factor 10. Now what I did not like about the old one, was that each time I set up a new website, I had to set up a new account, with the result that I have to pay for a lot of webspace and a lot of bandwith i don't use. Now I am moving over to a new host, who cheaply offers virtual servers. Now I am a n00b when it comes to server tech. I have two questions about this: 1. Could I install all my webistes on this virtual server, provided it is big enough? 2. They offer the possibility of getting more than one IP address, but it costs more. What would be the advantage of this? Would I be able to suffice with one IP address?

    I've configured an Apache httpd server (v2.2) as a reverse proxy (with SSL) to a Microsoft IIS website running an ASP.NET application with SQL Server Report Services. The proxy mostly works but Report Viewer reports aren't being proxied, all I get is a square window in Chrome and in IE I get the following error: This page contains both secure and nonsecure items.   • Preventing users from deleting SQL data

    We just purchased a program that requires the users to have an account in the MS SQL server, with read/write access to the program's database. My concern is that since these users will now have write access to the database, they could directly connect to the SQL server outside of the program's client and then mess with the data directly in the tables. Is there anyway I can prevent access to the database while still allowing access via the client program?

  • SQL Express 2008 R2 on Amazon EC2 instance: tons of free memory, poor performance

    The old SQL Express 2005 was running on a low-end single Xeon CPU Dell server, RAID 5 7200 disks, 2 GB RAM (SBS 2003). I have not done any baseline measurements on the old physical server, but the Web app is used by half a dozen people (maybe 2 concurrently), so I figured "how bad can an Amazon EC2 instance be?". It's pretty horrible: a difference of 8 seconds of load time on one screen. First of all, I'm not a SQL guru, but here's what I've tried: Had a Small Instance, now running a c1.medium (High Cpu Medium) Windows 2008 32-bit R2 EBS-backed instance running IIS 7.5 and SQL Express 2008 R2. No noticeable improvement. Changed Page File from fixed 256 to Automatic. Setup a Striped Mirror from within Disk Management with two attached 1 GB EBS volumes. Moved database and transaction log, left everything else on the boot EBS volume. No noticeable change. Looked at memory, ~1000 MB of physical memory free (1.7 GB total). Changed SQL instance to use a minimum of 1024 RAM; restarted server, no change in memory usage. SQL still only using ~28MB of RAM(!). So I'm thinking: this database is tiny (28MB), why isn't the whole thing cached in RAM? Surely that would speed up performance. The transaction log is 241 MB. Seems kind of large in comparison -- has this not been committed? Is it a cause of performance degradation? I recall something about Recovery Models and log sizes somewhere in my travels, but not positive. Another thing: the old server was running SQL Express 2005. Not sure if that has any impact, but I tried changing the compatibility level from SQL 2000 to 2008, but that had no effect. Anyways, what else can I try here? Seems ridiculous to throw more virtual hardware at this thing. I know I/O is going to be rough on EBS volumes, but surely others are successfully running small .NET/SQL apps on reasonably priced instances?

  • Make a temp network.

    I have a XAMPP test server running on my Windows Vista laptop. I also have a small wireless router. I would like be able to create a small temp network that could broadcast that network so any other computers connected to the wifi can go to localhost/ or an internal ip address and view my server.   • Windows 2003 routing by port

    I have remote Windows 2003 server with two network interfaces e.g. Cn1 and Cn2. I need that all traffic goes through Cn1 except for one port (for me it's 3389, rdp for administration) that works over Cn2. Currently when I setup all connections work through Cn1, I completely lose connection over Cn2 - and can't connect to server via RDP over Cn2. Now I used static routing based on my ip address (which can changed - so it's bad).

  • Why web application on https stops working after windows update?

    On Windows Server 2008 R2 I have several web applications on IIS7. One of these applications has https binding with SSL certificate. However after every windows update this one application stops working. Browser says that server is unavailable. It starts working again when I simply open IIS manager, select that https binding, click edit and without changing anything click OK. Why is this happening?

    I have one physical server that runs: an Apache (httpd) server another web server (let's say Tomcat for sake of argument) on port 1234 Can I configure the Apache server to act as a proxy for SSL traffic, while keeping the application server blissfully unaware of SSL? What I imagine is: Traffic to http://myserevr.com/app is redirected to https://myserver.com/app Traffic to https://myserver.com/app is proxied to the application server. My SSL certificate is only installed on the Apache server, not on the Application server Other traffic to the Apache server (http://myserver.com/anotherapp) is served directly from the Apache server What's the best setup to achieve this?     ok, I have a few questions regarding mysql. I am currently running ubuntu 12.04.4 LTS command line version. I am looking for a database that I can use. I am confused at this point because I am uninformed. mysql is just one database that is on the server? or can it contain several or many databases What programs do I use to access it on the server or is it a vt-100 type access? I understand that mysql comes with lamp? or ubuntu. I am thinking that it is already installed but not sure how to access it, but that is another question for later. Outside of the man pages and the ubuntu manual, is there a site for its setup and use? Thanks!
