• How do you upgrade/remove a side-by-side installation?

  I've hit some snags in the last two upgrades (which I've been able to resolve with time, patience and AskUbuntu :) so come 12.04 I'm considering a side-by-side installation. Perhaps even installing a pre-release before that (because virtual machine testing can't reveal hardware-related issues). So, let's say I installed a side-by-side version. As far as I can tell this splits my existing partition and installs a brand new Ubuntu on partition 2. If all goes well, there are no hardware issues, and my favorite apps seem to be working, how do I switch to a one-sided installation? If I can't, how do I do a side-by-side installation the next time? (And, am I crazy to consider using a pre-release version to do a side-by-side installation?)

This month’s feature is a follow-up from last month’s Global Perspective note from a well known ACE Director based in EMEA. My first contribution to this blog was before Oracle Open World and I was quite excited about where this initiative would take me in my understanding of the value of Oracle Fusion Middleware. Rimi Bewtra from the Oracle AppAdvantage team came as promised to the Oracle ACE Director briefings and explained what this initiative was all about and I then asked the directors to take part in the new survey. The story was really well received and then at the SOA advisory board that many of these ACE Directors already take part in there was a further discussion on how this initiative will help customers understand the benefits of adoption. A few days later Rick Beers launched the program at a lunch of invited customer executives which included one from Pella who talked about their projects (a quick recap on that here). I wasn’t able to stay for the whole event but what really interested me was that these executives who understood the technology but where looking for how they could use them to drive their businesses. Lots of ideas were bubbling up in my head about how we can use this in user groups to help our members, and the timing was fantastic as just three weeks later we had UKOUG_Apps13, our flagship Applications conference in the UK. We had independently working with Oracle marketing in the UK on an initiative called Apps Transformation to help our members look beyond just the application they use today. We have had a Fusion community page but felt the options open are now much wider than Fusion Applications, there are acquired applications, social, mobility and of course the underlying technology, Oracle Fusion Middleware. I was really pleased to be allowed to give the Oracle AppAdvantage story as a session in our conference and we are planning a special Apps Transformation event in March where I hope the Oracle AppAdvantage team will take part and we will have the results of the survey to discuss. But, life also came full circle for me. In my first post, I talked about Andrew Sutherland and his original theory that Oracle Fusion Middleware adoption had technical drivers. Well, Andrew was a speaker at our event and he gave a potted, tech-talk free update on Oracle Open World. Andrew talked about the Prevailing Technology Winds, and what is driving this today and he talked about that in the past it was the move from simply automating processes (ERP etc), through the altering of those processes (SOA) and onto consolidation. The next drivers are around the need to predict, both faster and more accurately; how to better exploit the information that we have available. He went on to talk about The Nexus of Forces: Social, Mobile, Cloud and Information – harnessing these forces of change with Oracle technology. Gartner really likes this concept and if you want to know more you can get their paper here. All this has made me think, and I hope it will make you too. Technology can help us drive our businesses better and understanding your needs can be the first step on your journey, which was the theme of our event in the UK. • Bless doesn't fix white boot screen boot delay for single-boot Xubuntu 14.04 on Macbook 4,1

  I still have a 30-second delay on the white boot-up screen before Xubuntu loads after trying various combinations of bless --device as recommended here: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/MactelSupportTeam/AppleIntelInstallation#Avoid_long_EFI_wait_before_GRUB I wonder if anyone has experienced this before, or can point me to some good steps for troubleshooting this issue? I have cycled my macbook dozens of times, it would be great to be able to boot quicker. I am single-booting Xubuntu 14.04 (no Mac OSX partitions or any other OS, just a GRUB partition at sda1, a main partition at sda2, and a swap at the end of the drive). Suggestions very appreciated.

  I have the following configuration, A host running Windows 7; A guest running Ubuntu 14.04 LTS (VirtualBox); I am connecting a Cisco router directly to my PC running Windows 7 and testing the router for netflow packets in the virtualBox I am having a difficulty capturing the traffic of the netflow from the Cisco device in my virtualBox using port 2222. I tried to use the many different networking modes provided by virutalBox (i.e. NAT, Bridged Adapter, Host only adapter) but I am not successful in capturing the netflow traffic. Could you please advise me on the configuration setup that need to be done on the virtual box to allow capturing the traffic coming from the router. I successfully capture the netflow traffic on my PC (windows 7). Thank you

• How to verify real people?

  For a music community, I want bands to be able to verify themselves. What is the best way to do this? For example I could let the record label mail me, but some bands are indepedent. I could also ask them to put a 'code' on their website or Facebook page and then check manually. I'm not per se looking for a waterproof solution, so no scanning of real life documents and I'm okay with doing the checks manually. In other words, how can you verify real people with their virtual presence?

• SQL Server 2008 Service Pack 1 and the Invoke or BeginInvoke cannot be called error message

  When trying to install SQL Server 2008 Service Pack 1 to a SQL Server 2008 instance that is running on a virtual machine, the installer will start:   But then after about 20 seconds I receive the following error message: TITLE: SQL Server Setup failure. ----------------------------- SQL Server Setup has encountered the following error: Invoke or BeginInvoke cannot be called on a control until the window handle has been created. ------------------------------ BUTTONS: OK ------------------------------ Searching for this issue I found that several people have the same problem and there is no clear solution.  Some had success with closing windows or Internet Explorer but that didn’t work for me; what did work is to make sure the SQL Server 2008 “Please wait while SQL Server 2008 Setup processes the current operation.” dialog is selected and has the focus when it first shows up.  Selected (with the current focus) it looks like this:   Without focus the dialog looks like this: Add a comment if you find out any information about how to consistently get around this issue or why it is happening in the first place.

  I recently purchased an Acer Aspire laptop. Windows 7 Home Premium edition was installed on the main drive. I booted to the Ubuntu 12.04 Installation environment and selected the option to Install Ubuntu alonside Windows 7. I now have two data partitions roughly half the size of the HD (NTFS and EXT4) and a /boot partition that is NTFS. How can i convert the /boot partition to EXT without breaking Ubuntu and Windows 7? I would like to tri-boot it with another Environment if possible, but this is presenting a problem.

• Replace Broadcom "wl" driver with "b43"

  I'm using Ubuntu 10.04.4 LTS, and in my laptop there is a Broadcom BCM4312 wlan card. lspci output: 04:00.0 Network controller: Broadcom Corporation BCM4312 802.11b/g (rev 01) Subsystem: Broadcom Corporation Device 04b5 Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0, IRQ 18 Memory at f4500000 (64-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=16K] Capabilities: [40] Power Management version 3 Capabilities: [58] Vendor Specific Information Capabilities: [e8] Message Signalled Interrupts: Mask- 64bit+ Queue=0/0 Enable- Capabilities: [d0] Express Endpoint, MSI 00 Capabilities: [100] Advanced Error Reporting Capabilities: [13c] Virtual Channel Capabilities: [160] Device Serial Number 81-ac-1d-ff-ff-12-54-92 Capabilities: [16c] Power Budgeting Kernel driver in use: wl Kernel modules: wl, ssb So as you can see, the current (and default) driver is wl - installed with jockey. But I have another Ubuntu based distribution on my laptop (BackTrack linux), which is also 10.04, but it has the b43 driver installed and the overall performance is MUCH better. So I would like to install it on this OS too, but even google didn't help me. So my question is how to install the latest b43 driver on my Ubuntu?

• Proper fstab entry to mount a samba share in 12.04

  I am a little confused on the proper fstab entry for a samba share in Ubuntu 12.04 I can get the drive to mount manually by using: sudo mount -t cifs //192.168.2.2/raid_drive /mnt/homeserver -o username=jon,password=password So I tried putting this in fstab: //192.168.2.2/raid_drive /mnt/homeserver cifs username=jon,password=password,iocharset=utf8,mode=0777,dir_mode=07??77 0 0 Which gives me this error in syslog: kernel: [ 2217.925354] CIFS: Unknown mount option mode kernel: [ 2217.936345] CIFS VFS: default security mechanism requested. The default security mechanism will be upgraded from ntlm to ntlmv2 in kernel release 3.3 This guide says to use smbfs although I believe smbfs is deprecated? What is a common fstab configuration for a samba share in Ubuntu 12.04? EDIT: Using the accepted answer below I was initially getting this error message (from dmesg): [ 45.520883] CIFS VFS: Error connecting to socket. Aborting operation [ 45.520990] CIFS VFS: cifs_mount failed w/return code = -115 although it turns out this was due to network connectivity issues, and not related to improper fstab entry.

• Can't Dual Boot Ubuntu 12.04 and Windows 7 on Sony Vaio S 15 (2012)

  I just bought my dad a new laptop for fathers day, a Sony Vaio S 15 (the latest models from Sony) and he wants to dual boot Ubuntu and Windows 7. I put Ubuntu 12.04 on a USB drive and went to install it on the computer, but when I got into the partition part of the install there was no option to dual boot. Only to delete everything and install Ubuntu or 'other'. I installed using the 'other' feature by manually partitioning, however once I installed it the computer wouldn't ever go to grub. From inside windows I used Easy BCD to try and fix the boot loader so it would give the option to boot into Windows 7 or Ubuntu 12.04, but it couldn't detect ANY operating systems on the computer (not even windows). Is it not possible to dual boot on the latest Sony Vaios, or is there a workaround for this?

• How can I import models from Blender into jMonkeyEngine?

  I have some blender model files (Blender version 2.6) which I would like to use with the jMonkeyEngine SDK. However, when I use Blender's native .obj exporter, I can't import it in jMonkeyEngine (the model simply fails to import or looks messed up). I've tried importing .obj files or .blend files directly into the jMonkeyEngine SDK to no avail. I've also tried to use various OGRE exporters to export .scene and .material files, but only the .scene file is created. Is there a simple way to simply export files from Blender into the jMonkeyEngine SDK? EDIT: I seem to have found something in Blender. When I go under addons, there's a warning in the OGRE exporter; "'.mesh' output requires OgreCommandLineTools". However, I have already installed those tools under the C drive. Has anyone else encountered this issue?

• HP Pavilion tx2000 - Wifi adapter no longer works after moving from 12.04 to a 12.10 clean install

  I have a HP Pavilion tx2000 that I have been running Ubuntu 12.04 on for a couple of months without any problems (wifi worked great) until yesterday when my hard drive failed. I replaced the hard drive and decided to install Ubuntu 12.10. Unlike 12.04, the wifi did not work after the installation finished and all the updates where installed (over Ethernet). The network drop down in the top right didn't even show a wireless option. I Googled about for a bit and found some solutions that seemed like they might work. Unfortunately they did not. Here is what I tried: sudo apt-get remove bcmwl-kernel-source sudo apt-get install b43-fwcutter sudo apt-get install firmware-b43-lpphy-installer Restart the computer. And the wifi still didn't work. At which point I panicked a bit and tried to undo the previous commands by running: sudo apt-get remove b43-fwcutter firmware-b43-lpphy-installer sudo apt-get install bcmwl-kernel-source Restart the computer. The wifi still doesn't work. This is where I stopped because I have no idea what I am doing and don't want to mess something up. The network drop down still doesn't show a wireless option and the hardware wifi switch on the laptop is amber (it turns blue when the wifi is on). Using the hardware switch does not change the color. Output from: sudo lspci ... 08:00.0 Network controller: Broadcom Corporation BCM4322 802.11a/b/g/n Wireless LAN Controller (rev 01) ... Output from: sudo rfkill list all 0: hp-wifi: Wireless LAN Soft blocked: no Hard blocked: yes UPDATE: After writing up this question tried the following command: sudo rfkill unblock all At first it didn't do anything but after running it about four times, sudo rfkill list all now returns: 0: hp-wifi: Wireless LAN Soft blocked: no Hard blocked: no But the network menu still does not have a wireless option and the hardware switch still glows amber. Pushing the hardware switch turns the hard block back on and I have to run sudo rfkill unblock all multiple times again to turn it off. Any help is appreciated!   mailserever domain name is "Vrk.com".. I want to store message sent to "yahoo.com" too...can i do tht.. I have /etc/postfix/virtual in which i have entered.. @yahoo.com root And 1 more thing...i have user named "vinod" in the mail server...now when i address any mails to "[email protected]"...it works....but when i do "[email protected]"...it gives me error saying...this doesnt exist in the the server...but when i send mails to "[email protected]"...it sends the mails (though it goes into the mail.log as an error entry)...it atleast doesnt stop me from sending it...why is that??
