  There’s a significant number of useful projects at Codeplex who were meeting with some of our needs. As such, here are two that already have been useful to me: Droid Explorer As the name implies, allows us to explore an Android device and has features such as: Copy local files to device Reboot device Reboot device in to recovery mode Open files for viewing / execution locally with the default file type executable Package Manager (Install & Uninstall) Take a Screen Shot (landscape or portrait) etc Virtual Router – Wifi Hot Spot (Windows 7 / 2008 R2) Allows you to create an Access Point, sharing your local Internet connection, with other wireless devices.   I got a macbook pro and I want to share it with some of my friend located at the other side of internet. He can use Internet. Now I want him to give access to my whole Macbook (XCode for most) so he can do developments at his location using my macbook. Now I need to ask is there a way we can both utilize the samme macbook having two virtual OS (one for me and one for him) without affecting each others' privacy? Is it possible to share the macbook across more than 1 user? I don't mean Remote Desktop like of thing in Windows.

• pySerial writes to Arduino Uno get buffered

  I have a Python script that writes short messages to the serial port on my Arduino Uno board using pySerial. There is a loop and depending on some conditions, multiple writes can happen within a loop, something like this: while True: #Conditions block 1 if <CONDITION1>: serial.writelines("INIT") elif <CONDITION2>: serial.writelines("NEW") ... #Conditions block 2 if <CONDITION1>: # Fetch something from the Internet serial.writelines("CHECK") elif <CONDITION2>: # Fetch something from the Internet serial.writelines("STOP") ... But, when my Arduino board receives this it receives the first message as INIT, but the second one is being read as INITSTOP or INITCHECK and third one gets concatenated to the previous messages. My arduino program checks for specific message in this way: if(msg.equals("CHECK")) { // Do something } else if(msg.equals("INIT")) { // Do Something else } Can anyone guide me on this? BTW, I don't think the problem is with the Arduino as it works perfectly when I test it with the Serial Monitor available with the IDE. I've tried adding sleeps of upto 10 seconds before every write, but that did not work out.

  Hi to all I develop web crawling service (windows service / multi-thread) . its work fine, but sometimes my server network not response. and i can't ping server IP (from internet), but can ping by other network card (local ip) that not access to internet. after i open server with remote desktop and stop crawling service. i could ping. What's my problem? Bandwidth limit or max connection limit exceed or ??? how to prevent this issue? Note: when this problem occur, i open browser for browse web site, but can't open any website!!! This means that getting along with everyone else here is very important to me. Hope it helps Hi fellow student, I noticed that you're working on a project, using a library that I'm interested in. Can we setup a time so I can learn about this library from you? This model of interaction works very well for me. However, there is one fellow student, who manages to make my life hell beyond all of this (his name is not important, let's just call him "Sam"). He seems to be always (pardon my crass description) high and completely unwilling to contribute to a constructive, academic conversation. He's a pretty smart guy, but just comes across as (I hate to say something like this about a fellow student, but) an imbecile. He also has ignorant opinions on important topics, some of which pertain to my specialization (AI, NLP, etc), and when I try to explain to him why he's wrong, all he does is insult me and put me in a foul mood. I have tried ignoring him (sitting somewhere else in the lab, headphones, etc), but he seems to like doing this because he approaches me and no amount of "leave me alone" seems to do the trick. Can anyone please suggest to me how to deal with this man in a civil way? Thank you

• Reset Windows Password with Ubuntu Live CD

  A friend brought me his PC with Windows Vista to reset the user password because he didn't use it for a long while and forgot his password. So I found a tutorial on how to reset the password by using a Ubuntu Live CD and the software chntpw. After I installed this software I mounted the SYSTEM partition by opening it with the file explorer. It is now available at /media/SYSTEM/ The tutorial says I have to open the file /windows/system32/config/sam with chntpw and reset the password with chntpw -u USERNAME sam After I did this it didn't show me any errors. So I unmounted the partition and rebooted the PC with the installed Windows Vista. It is still locked with the old password. Did I do any mistakes or is there an other way to reset the password?

• How do I make Nautilus windows stick for drag & drop?

  When you drag and drop a folder with nautilus, you must carefully set both windows on non overlapping areas of your screen, otherwise selecting one folder will bring the windows to the front, hiding the second one. On Windows, doing so will stick the explorer.exe windows to the back and let you drag and drop the folder. I suppose it detect a long click to decide whether or not bring the window to the front. Is that possible with Ubuntu? Now I know that Nautilus now has split panels by pressing F3, but that not handy. Most of the time, you open a folder, THEN decide to copy. With split panel, you must decide, THEN split the panel and go to the right folder.

The one's that I know of are : linkedIn.com ,evite.com and sun ibm and oracle (obviously) Eclipse.org uses php, I wonder why? If you have worked on/know any other sites, can your share your experience and also the technologies used(if that's not an issue)? EDIT:It doesn't have to use the full stack. EDIT : There are quite a few ecommerce websites like bestbuy.com. I know this bcos I worked with the ATG(atg.com) ecommerce suite and their website lists their clients. • What's your most controversial programming opinion?

  This is definitely subjective, but I'd like to try to avoid it becoming argumentative. I think it could be an interesting question if people treat it appropriately. The idea for this question came from the comment thread from my answer to the "What are five things you hate about your favorite language?" question. I contended that classes in C# should be sealed by default - I won't put my reasoning in the question, but I might write a fuller explanation as an answer to this question. I was surprised at the heat of the discussion in the comments (25 comments currently). So, what contentious opinions do you hold? I'd rather avoid the kind of thing which ends up being pretty religious with relatively little basis (e.g. brace placing) but examples might include things like "unit testing isn't actually terribly helpful" or "public fields are okay really". The important thing (to me, anyway) is that you've got reasons behind your opinions. Please present your opinion and reasoning - I would encourage people to vote for opinions which are well-argued and interesting, whether or not you happen to agree with them.

• Java and gstreamer-java initialisation error

  I am building a small app which will play streaming audio from the internet in java (mainly internet radio stations). I have decided to use the gstreamer-java library for the sound, which uses JNA. I would like to include a check in the code, to see whether the gstreamer library has been initialised. When I have left the "Gst.init()" code out (to mimic when the library has not been initialised correctly), the application throws out the following messages: (process:21888): GLib-GObject-CRITICAL **: /build/buildd/glib2.0-2.22.3/gobject/gtype.c:2458: initialization assertion failed, use IA__g_type_init() prior to this function (process:21888): GLib-CRITICAL **: g_once_init_leave: assertion `initialization_value != 0' failed The app calls the gstreamer-java library. The error messages appear but the thread continues to run, hogging the CPU. Is there any way to catch the error or to add a check to prevent it from happening? An alternative would be to put the "Gst.init()" in the main class, but I am not sure if this would always guarantee the gstreamer library is initialised.

• Is there a shell-independent HUD-like menu search tool for Xfce/GNOME/Cinnamon?

  The Ubuntu Heads-Up Display (HUD) - you love it or you hate it. Personally I rather like a classic desktop, so I use Xfce or GNOME-fork Cinnamon, and I'd like to keep those menu's where they are. But the HUD is pretty awesome when your menus are complex and you forgot where an option sits. This makes that search trick very interesting. I know the HUD is Unity specific. I am looking for a HUD-like tool to complement the menu in shells other than Unity. There is Appmenu Runner for KDE that does this. There is also appmenu-qt for KDE. Problem with the above is that it uses KDE libs, and it only works for KDE apps. This is Linux, there aught to be something like this for GNOME/GTK apps, right? Looking for any tool that can search the menus. I already use(d) Synapse, Kupfer and GNOME Do, but those are simply app-launchers (with some tricks). Something like that would suffice if only they included searching the menus for the currently focused application. The HUD allows users to activate menu items by typing part of the name. It uses a fuzzy search algorithm that will highlight partial matches. It can match menu items that are multiple layers deep in an application's menu hierarchy. The feature, which replaces traditional menu accelerators, is activated by pressing the alt key. • AdMob Android integration - what permissions to ask for?

  In the various videos on the AdMob integration, I've seen that only permission to access the internet is asked for: <uses-permission android:name="android.permission.INTERNET" /> Not that I am an expert in advertising, but wouldn't AdMob need the user's geographic location as well, so that they can serve location specific ads? Or avoid serving certain ads based on a location, like maybe not offering me a Big Mac if I am in India or not adverting a ham sandwich if I am in an Arab country? If AdMob needs those permissions, how do I ask for them?

• Boot existing ubuntu installation on uefi, GPT BTRFS

  I have looked through many of the questions, and haven't found anything that quite satisfies this problem. I have an ssd hard drive that is bootable from my old computer. It is a standard BIOS, however, I built a new computer with Z87 motherboard that is a UEFI. What I'd like to do is boot from this hard drive without wiping out the hard drive. I've tried booting from legacy mode, doesn't seem to work. Part of the multitude of problems is my partitioning scheme, which is GPT. sdx1 is the btrfs system, sdx2 swap, sdx3 is bios_grub. I've tried setting the UEFI/BIOS to boot in legacy mode, I've tried turning my swap partition into a Grub EFI boot, I've tried copying the file system onto a new drive installed on the new system. However, copying the information doesn't keep the filesystem or subvolumes intact. I've also tried boot-repair which is when I overwrote the swap space. I'd really rather not start over on a new install, so any other suggested trees to bark up would be appreciated. For the record, I hate you Microsoft, and ASUS I understand complying with microsoft, but make it optional... I'm really disappointed in that I have to deal with Windows 8 when I have nothing to do with it. Something I think I could try, but would like to hear from more experienced users. Moving the sdx1 (btrfs /@/@home) partion and opening up a 100 MB partition on the beginning sectors and install efi compatible Grub2 installation. Would it work? How to move a partition?

• Generalist Languages: Dying or Alive and Well?

  Around here, it seems like there's somewhat of a consensus that generalist programming languages (that try to be good at everything, support multiple paradigms, support both very high- and very low-level programming), etc. are a bad idea, and that it's better to pick the right tool for the job and use lots of different languages. I see three major areas where this is flawed: Interfacing multiple languages is always at least a source of friction and is sometimes practically impossible. How severe a problem this is depends on how fine-grained the interfacing is. Near the boundary between the two languages, though, you're basically limited to the intersection of their features, and you have to care about things like binary interfaces that you usually wouldn't. Passing complex data structures (i.e. not just primitives and arrays of primitives) between languages is almost always a hassle. Furthermore, shifting between different syntaxes, different conventions, etc. can be confusing and annoying, though this is a fairly minor complaint. Requirements are never set in stone. I hate picking a language thinking it's the right tool for the job, then realizing that, when some new requirement surfaces, it's actually a terrible choice for that requirement. This has happened to me several times before, usually when working with languages that are very slow, very domain specific and/or has very poor concurrency/parallelism support. When you program in a language for a while, you start to build up a personal toolbox of small utility functions/classes/programs. The value of these goes drastically down if you're forced to use a different language than the one you've accumulated all this code in. What am I missing here? Why shouldn't more focus be placed on generalist languages? Are generalist languages as a category dying or alive and well?
