• [NSIS] Custom radio-buttom INI page via Eclipse

  I'm using Eclipse's create InstallOptions menu to create a custom INI page with radio-buttons for repackaging the Blackberry Desktop installer. There are 2 sections for each type: "Internet" and "Enterprise". I need a user to select 1 of the 2 options and depending on their selection, the page will carry over the selection chosen in the custom page, jump to the INSTFILES page, and continue onto the end. I couldn't find any concrete documentation on getting INI pages to load in the script (I'm probably searching incorrectly), and then pass data from one page to the next (according to fields I guess?) Any help is appreciated. • Objectdatasource and Gridview : Sorting, paging, filtering

  Hi there, Im using entity framework 1.0 and trying to feed out a Gridview with a objectdatasource that have access to my facade. The problem is, that it seems to be particulary difficult and haven't seen anything that realy do what i want it to do on the internet. For those who know, a gridview feeded with an objectdatasource, it can't sort automaticaly then you must do it manually. It's not that bad. Where it becomes a nightmare, its when we add paging and filter settings to a gridview's datasource. After many hours searching on the internet, i'm asking you, guys, if anyone knows a link that can explain me how to mix Pagging, Sorting and filtering for a gridview and an objectdatasource! • Why the recent shift to removing/omitting semicolons from Javascript?

  It seems to be fashionable recently to omit semicolons from Javascript. There was a blog post a few years ago emphasising that in Javascript, semicolons are optional and the gist of the post seemed to be that you shouldn't bother with them because they're unnecessary. The post, widely cited, doesn't give any compelling reasons not to use them, just that leaving them out has few side-effects. Even GitHub has jumped on the no-semicolon bandwagon, requiring their omission in any internally-developed code, and a recent commit to the zepto.js project by its maintainer has removed all semicolons from the codebase. His chief justifications were: it's a matter of preference for his team; less typing Are there other good reasons to leave them out? Frankly I can see no reason to omit them, and certainly no reason to go back over code to erase them. It also goes against (years of) recommended practice, which I don't really buy the "cargo cult" argument for. So, why all the recent semicolon-hate? Is there a shortage looming? Or is this just the latest Javascript fad?

• Arguments for a coding standard?

  A few friends and i are planning to work on a project together and we want a COMPLETELY DIFFERENT coding standard. We do NOT want to use the coding standard the libraries/language uses. Its our project and we want to mess around. So i came here to ask what you guys think are good standards and arguments for it (or what not to do and arguments against it). The styles i remember most are Upper casing the entire word Camel and Pascal casing Using '_' to separate each word pre or postfixing letters or words (i hate m for member but i think IsCond() is a good func name. SomethingException as a postfix example) Using '_' at the start or end of words Brace placement. On a new or same line? I know of libs that use Pascal casing on all public and protected members. But would you ever get confused if something is a func, var or even property if the lang supports it? What about if you decide a public member to be private (or vice versa) wouldnt that great a lot of fix up work or inconsistencies? Is prefixing C to every class a good idea? I ask what do you think and why?

Oracle has sequences that are islands to themselves. select seq_name.currval from dual; select seq_name.nextval from dual; currval - return current number at top of sequence nextval - increment sequence by 1, return new number   therefore - to create functionality in oracle similar to an index column - OPTION A) - Create insert trigger: CREATE OR REPLACE TRIGGER dept_bir BEFORE INSERT ON departments FOR EACH ROW WHEN (new.id IS NULL) BEGIN SELECT dept_seq.NEXTVAL INTO :new.id FROM dual; END; This will handle creating a unique identity, but will not necessarily inform process flow of identity without additional logic. OPTION B) - Select indentity into temp variable, insert whole item into tab **** When attemptint to query currval, the below error was being thrown - SELECT seq_name.currval from dual; ERROR : TABLE OR VIEW DOES NOT EXIST *** Although Oracle sys tables may have access to the sequences, that isn't to say the Oracle user may have access to those sequences - verify permissions when the system can't see object that are being reported in the object explorer.

• GitHub: Are there external tools for managing issues list vs. project backlog

  Recently I posted one of my the projects1 on GitHub and as I was exploring capabilities of the site, I noticed they have a rather decent issue tracking section. I want to use that section as a) other people can report bugs if they'd like and b) other people can see which bugs I'm aware of. However, as others have noted, issues list cannot be prioritized in order to create a project backlog. For now my backlog has been a text file, but I'd like to be able to have it integrated so the same information isn't maintained in different places. Having a fully ordered list, which is something we also practice at work, has been very useful as I can open one file, start with line 1 and fire off 2 or 3 items in one sitting without having to go back to a full issues/stories bucket. GitHub doesn't offer this. What GitHub does offer is a very nice and clean API so issues can easily be exported into anything else. I've searched to see if there are other websites (like Trello) that integrate with GitHub issues, but did not find anything. Does anyone know of such a product, service or offline tool? Those that use GitHub, what is your experience in managing backlog? I kinda hate the idea of manually managing two disconnected lists like some people seem to be doing with Wiki project pages. 1 - are shameless plugs allowed no this site? Searched but didn't find a definite answer. If it's bad practice, STOP and don't read further As a developer I got sick and tired of navigating to same set of folders 30 times a day, so I wrote a little, auto-collapsible utility that gets stuck to the desktop and allows easy access to the folders you constantly use.

• Replicating MySQL DB to development machine - bad idea?

  I am considering replicating a production MySQL database to my development machine so I've always got current data. The production database is externally hosted. My development machine is behind an unreliable internet connection. It is entirely possible that the development machine could be disconnected from the internet for extended periods of time (hours). Would there be any adverse effect on the production database by doing this? (I don't strictly need live data - but it would be nice, and good excuse to dabble with replication. If the consensus is that this is a bad idea, I'll set up a daily job to import the previous night's backup into my development database)

• Which web framework or technologies would suit me?

  Hi, I had been working on desktop apps and server side(non web) for some time and now I am diving in to web first time. I plan to write a scalable enterprise level app. I have worked with Java, Javascript, Jquery etc. but I absolutely hate jsp. So is there any framework that focuses on developing enterprise level web apps without jsp. I liked Wicket's approach, but I think there is a little lack of support of dynamic html in it and jquery(yes i looked at wiquery). Also I feel making wicket apps scalable would take some sweat. Can Spring MVC, Struts2 etc. help me make with this with just using say Java, JavaScript, and JQuery. Or are there any other options for me like Wicket. Please do forgive if anything above looks insane, I am still working on my understanding with enterprise web apps. NOTE: If you think that I should take a different direction or approach, please do suggest!

• What to do when the programming activity becomes a problem?

  I once saw a program (can't remember which) where it talked about people "experiencing flow" when they are doing something they are passionate about. When "in flow", they tend to lose track of time and surrounding, concentrating only on their activity at hand. This happens a lot for me when I program; most particularly when I face a problem. I refuse to give up until it's solved. This usually leads to hours just rushing by and I forget to eat lunch, dinner gets pushed into far into the evening, and when I finally look at the clock, it's way into the wee-hours of the night and I will only get a few hours of sleep before having to rise early in the morning. (This is not to say that I'm in flow only when facing a problem - but I find it particularly hard to stop programming and step back when there's something I can't solve immediately.) I love programming, but I hate it when it disrupts my normal routines (most importantly eating and sleeping patterns). And sitting still for so many hours, staring a screen, is not healthy. Please, any ideas on how I can get my rampant programming activity under control?

• Capturing a NSParseErrorException

  Could someone tell me how I can capture a NSParseErrorException? The Situation: my app downloads a small .plist file. I convert this into dictionary using the string method -propertylist. This normally works fine. I check for a connection before going to retrieve the file, so it works fine if I've got a connection to the internet, and works fine when I don't. However, I discovered a use case that crashes. If I'm at location that requires authetication before connecting to the internet (at Starbucks, say) what's being returned by the app isn't a plist and the attempt to parse it causes the application to crash. So is there a way to transform my code so that the NSParseErrorException is caught and rather than crashing the program I can just skip over this piece of code? NSDictionary *temp = [myDownloadString propertyList]; I tried doing this if ([myDownloadString propertyList]==NSParseErrorException){ //do something } but that didn't work.

• Is there a LOGO interpreter that actually has a turtle?

  This is not a repeat of the now infamous "How do I move the turtle in LOGO?" Recently, I had the following conversation with my five year old daughter: Daughter: Daddy, do you write programs? Me: Yes! Daughter: Daddy, what's a program? Me: A program is a set of instructions that a computer follows. Daughter: Daddy, can I write a program too? Me: Sure! This got me scrambling to think of a very basic language that a five year old could get some satisfaction from mastering rather quickly. I'm ashamed to admit that the first thing that came to mind was this: 10 INPUT "Tell me a secret" A$ 20 PRINT "Wow really? :" A$ 30 GOTO 10 That isn't going to hold a five year old's attention for very long and it requires too much of a lecture. However, moving a turtle around and drawing neat pictures might just work. Sadly, my search for a LOGO interpreter yielded noting but ad ridden sites, flight simulators and a whole bunch of other stuff that I really don't want. I'm hoping to find a cross platform (Java / Python) LOGO interpreter (dare I call it simulator?) with the following features: Can save / replay commands (stored programs) Has an actual turtle Sound effects are a plus Have you stumbled across something like this, if so, can you provide a link? I hate to ask a 'shopping' sort of question, but it seemed much better than "Is LOGO appropriate for a five year old?"

• Trying to migrate Windows 7 install of Adobe CS5 to Ubuntu 12.04 with Wine - 'Internal errors - invalid paramters received"

  I have Adobe CS5 installed and running on the Windows 7 side of my machine. Since I'd hate to boot up into Windows just to use Photoshop, I'm trying to get it in Ubuntu 12.04. Tutorials I found suggested that the easiest way to have it in Ubuntu was to install Wine, and copy my Windows installation over. Here are the exact steps I've done up to this point. From Windows, exported the registry key for HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE SOFTWARE Adobe to the desktop. Changed to Ubuntu, downloaded Wine from Software Center Terminal: $ sudo apt-get install wine ttf-mscorefonts-installer $ winecfg $ wget http://www.kegel.com/wine/winetricks $ sh winetricks msxml6 gdiplus gecko vcrun2005sp1 vcrun2008 msxml3 atmlib Moved registry export to home folder. Copied "Program Files (x86)\Adobe" to "~/.wine/drive_c/Program Files (x86)/Adobe" "Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Adobe" to "~/.wine/drive_c/Program Files (x86)/Common Files/Adobe" "Documents and Settings\Don\Application Data\Adobe" to "~/.wine/drive_c/users/don/Application Data/Adobe" "Windows\System32\odbcint.dll" to "~/.wine/drive_c/windows/system32/odbcint.dll" ,and lastly "Windows\System32\odbc32.dll" to "~/.wine/drive_c/windows/system32/odbc32.dll". So to restate my question, How can I get Photoshop running in Ubuntu 12.04? I'm not sold on doing it in this specific way, I just want to use Photoshop without having to reboot. • Perth's ADF Community Event now an open invite

  Yesterday saw the next ADF Community Event in Perth, and as promised we grew from 15 to 25 attendees (which is going to cause a bit of a problem soon if we keep growing as we're going to run out of powerpoints for laptops). This bimonthly enjoyed presentations from Matthew Carrigy from the Dept of Finance WA on the ADF UI Shell, a small presentation from me about how Fusion Apps uses ADF, and a hands on based on programatically extending ADF BC to call external web services.  For Matt, his first presentation to a user group, with two live demos, all kudos to him for making it look smooth (for the record I hate live demos, I always break something) - thank you Matt! • Is there a standard practice for synchronizing SQL Server tables?

  I've written an application that retrieves pricing and part options from a SQL database to generate a 3D Model of the product and create a sales proposal. My client likes it so much they want to be able to use it on laptops in the field now. The catch is, they won't have an internet connection. I'm considering setting up a SQLite database as part of the standard installation. The SQLite database on each laptop will synchronize with the main database when the internet connection is re-established. Are there best practices regarding synchronizing SQL tables like this? Are there any pitfalls I should consider? I'm open to all options. Thank you.

• Switch between views in Android

  Hi, all I'm writing an Android application with multiple Tabs. The content of each tabs is determined by XMLs on the Internet, and it could be WebView for HTML rendering, GridView for photo displaying, etc. I'm going to delay downloading of those XML until the tab is clicked. Upon clicking the application will download corresponding XML from the Internet, and then choose suitable View for it. Currently I have written a MyViewDelegate and use TabSpec.setContent() to set the spec pointing to MyViewDelegate: spec = tabHost.newTabSpec(tabName[i]); intent = new Intent().setClass(this, HomeActivity.class); spec.setIndicator(title[i]); spec.setContent(new MyViewDelegate(this, tabName[i])); tabHost.addTab(spec); My problem is, after MyViewDelegate is required to draw, how can I switch to WebView/GridView and initialize it? • Which language meets my needs? [closed]

  I am a junior C# developer, working for half a year now. In my company I am working on some enterprise projects and after doing it for quite some time I understood that I dont like enterprise projects. I have my own browser-game written in PHP+MySql with some simple HTML+CSS and I have 300 active (those, who entered the game at least once per 5 days) players currently :) After thinking quite some time I understood that I am interested in: 1). Web-development AND 2). standalone programs (but not enterprise ones). 3). Development for mobile platforms is also nice, Android/iOs. 1st and 2nd categories are what I want the most. Android/iOs is good too. I am NOT interested in big systems which are hard to integrate, I am not interested in enterprise systems. In future I would like to start my own business/projects. I would like to create my own projects or/and create a small programmers company to create and release own products. Please tell me what programming language(s)/technologies would you advice me for it? Thanks alot! UPD: It's NOT a "which language is better" or any flame/holywar generating topic since I ask for language that suits my EXACT needs better. I believe C++ is better for low-level coding, while PHP is good for web-development and Object-C being made for iOs. I am still newbie at programming so dont hate me please.

• Deployment of broadband network

  Hi all, My query is related to broadband network deployment. I have a DSL modem connection provided by my operator. Now the DSL modem has a built-in NAT and DHCP server, hence it allocates IP addresses to any client devices (laptops, PC, mobile) that connect to it. However, the DSL modem also gets a public IP address X that is provisioned by the operator. My question is Whether this IP address X provisioned by operator is an IP address that is directly on the public Internet? Is it likely (practical scenario) that my broadband operator will put in one more NAT+DHCP server and provide IP addresses to all the modems within his broadband network. In this case, the IP addresses allotted to the modem devices will not be directly on the public Internet. Thanks in advance.
