  • How to setup VPN on home network

    I am a software developer. I travel and sometimes have a need to access my files at home and tweak other family members computers. I would like to connect to my home network via VPN and then RDP into whatever machine i need to. Currently i have a Windows Server 08 machine, which is my file server, database server, web server (for development work), source control repository, etc. (and also somewhat of a workstation when i need it to be). I want to use this same machine to run my VPN through. I have a linksys WRTG54 router. My ISP is AT&T DSL, with a dynamic IP address - so i'm assuming I'll either need to request a static IP or sign up with one of those static ip services.. where it keeps your dynamic ip synced up with a static one. While I do understand software engineering I am no expert in networking. What do i need to do to setup my VPN?

  • IPv6, isn't it just a few extra bits?

    It's always an interesting task, to try and explain what you do to family and friends. I have described IPv6 as the "Next Generation Internet"  or "Second Internet" but the hollow expressions on my kids faces scream for the instant relief of the latest video game.  Never one to give up easily, I have formulated a new example - the Post Office... Similar to the Post Office the Internet delivers mail and packages based on addresses. As the number of residences, businesses, and delivery locations increased, the 5 digit ZIP Code (Washington, DC 20005) was expanded to ZIP+4  allowing for more precise delivery points (Postmaster General, Washington, DC 20260-3100). Ah, if only computers were as simple.  IPv6 isn't an add-on or expansion of the existing IPv4 Addressing, it is a new addressing model which will allow the internet to grow from a single computer in the basement of a university or your parents kitchen table, to support the multitude of smart phones, smart TV's, tablets, dvr's, and disk players, all clambering to connect for information. Unfortunetly there are only a finite number of IPv4 public addresses left, and those are being consumed at an ever increasing rate. Few people could have predicted the explosive growth of the internet or the shortage of IPv4 addresses we now face - but there is a "Plan B" and that is the vastly larger address space of IPv6.  Many in the industry have labeled this a "business continuity" problem,  when in fact most companies will be able to continue conducting business once they run out of existing IPv4 Addresses. The problem is really a Customer Continuity problem, how will businesses communicate with existing customers and reach new customers online who's only option is to adopt IPv6 when IPv4 is depleted? Perhaps a first step is publishing a blog that is also accessible via IPv6, it's just a few extra bits.   • Running Windows XP with VMWare Fusion from a Fujitsu-Siemens recovery disk.

    I have installed a trail version from VMWare Fusion. I had (sold now) a very old Fujitu-Siemens laptop (from around 2001) which came with two recovery disks (which I still have :P). One recovery disk is a Windows XP installer, the other is a disk with drivers and useless software you will never use and run permanently in the background. If I install Windows XP from the recovery disk (which did not contain any software except what comes with Windows XP, for as far as I know), will it run in VMWare Fusion? Or do I really have to buy/pirate a new Windows XP installation disk? Thanks. Yes, I need XP, not 7.

  • Remote sessions limited to two of many monitors?

    I have 3 monitors attached to my local PC arranged in a triangle. My goal is to have the top monitor display local content, while displaying a remote session across the bottom two. I have gotten this to work with span and RDP, but I am looking for a software that would allow the remote sessions to be restricted to a number of monitors of my choosing, rather than spanning. Does this software exist? I've looked extensively. If there is a hack or something that might do it, I'm totally down for getting my hands dirty.

  • VMware Player 5.0 or VMware Workstation 9.0 after upgrade to Ubuntu 12.10

    The upgrade process Upgrading Ubuntu 12.04 to latest version 12.10 - aka Quantal Quetzal - is straight forward and you only need to follow the offical upgrade instructions. Short version on the console looks like this: sudo do-release-upgrade This will update the repository entries, and start the upgrade process. After some minutes or hours of download and installation, you have to reboot your system once to get the new kernel loaded. As time of writing, I'm on '3.5.0-17-generic'. And as with any modification of the kernel version, you have to compile the necessary kernel modules to get VMware Player or Workstation up and running. Usually, this happens the first time you try start your VMware software and that's it. Well, again not so this time. Getting the kernel patch Luckily, the community over VMware is very active and you can get a new kernel patch in the online forums here. Get the download and put in a folder have write permissions. Then you extract the archive on the console like so: tar -xjvf vmware9_kernel35_patch.tar.bz2 Then you change into the newly created folder: cd vmware9_kernel3.5_patch/ And you execute the available shell script as root (superuser) like so: sudo ./patch-modules_3.5.0.sh This will stop any running instances of VMware software, patches the source files and runs the compile process for your active environment. This might take some time depending on your machine, and once completed you can start VMware Player or Workstation as previously. In case that you are going to apply the patch again, the script will simply quit with the following output: /usr/lib/vmware/modules/source/.patched found. You have already patched your sources. Exiting You might remove the .patched file in case that you upgraded/changed your kernel and you need to apply the patch again. Disclaimer: The patch is "as-is" and the patcher is originally created by Artem S. Tashkinov, and later modified by An_tony. Please refer to the VMware forum in case of questions or problems. There are also patches available for older versions of VMware Player or Workstation.

  • BSODs after Windows 8.1 Upgrade

    I just upgraded my system to Windows 8.1, and I have been getting BSODs that I did not get before the 8.1 upgrade. Though I cannot conclude that running the Android Emulator with Intel's HAXM is the cause, both crashes have occurred while the emulator was running. I get CRITICAL_STRUCTURE_CORRUPTION, the same error as this guy, except I don't have the hardware/software that he has that caused his problem. Minidumps here. Output of verifier.exe /all and then a reboot and then verifier /query: http://sdrv.ms/17CPVu9 Edit: According to software.intel.com/en-us/forums/topic/475129 (can't link due to lack of rep) it is being caused by HAXM. Will close question when I find a solution.

  • How can I improve the rendering performance of this old DOS application?

    I have very old DOS Application (CadSoft Eagle - PCB Designer) and I want to work with it on my workstation with Windows 7. Then I install Windows 98 and that software into VmWare Player. But that software has serious problem with redrawing screen. It's very slow in comparison with my Intel Celeron 333MHz with Windows 98. I have same problem if I try to use DOSBox on Windows XP (same Celeron 333MHz). I also trying run this application directly on Windows XP (same Celeron 333MHz) with compatibility mod set to "Windows 98", but I get "(0Dh): General Protection Fault". Can someone give me good advice how I solve that?

    For those of you coming to the ADF Hands on training on the 22nd March in London, there was a link to the prerequisites.  Unfortunately, in a reshuffle of content on OTN, this page was removed.  So, over the next day or so I’m hoping to the pull together the relevant information into this blog post.  So keep checking back! Firstly, you need to being your laptop with you to do the hands on exercises.  No laptop, no hands on. Recommended 2GB RAM running Microsoft Windows XP SP2, 2003 Server SP2, Vista (32 bit only), Windows 7 or Linux or Mac 2GHz Processor (less will be acceptable but slower) Mozilla Firefox 2.0 or higher, Internet Explorer 7 or higher, Safari 3.0 and higher, Google Chrome 1.0 or higher Winzip or other extracting software Adobe Acrobat reader Flash (if you want to see dynamic graphs in your application) As for software, you will need have installed JDeveloper 11g.  The hands on instructions are based on 11.1.1.2 (or is it 11.1.1.3)! anyway, either of those or 11.1.1.4 would be required. You also need an Oracle database on your machine and access to the HR schema (which should be unlocked).  Don’t expect to have access to a network and VPN to a database. A simple test, unplug your laptop from your corporate network, run up JDev  and select File –> New –> Database connection and make sure you can connect to HR database and see the Emp/Dept etc tables.  If you can do that, you should be good to go. I would strongly recommend ensuring you have this in place before you arrive on Tuesday. Look forward to seeing you there.
