• WPF component for 2D tree diagram

  I'm looking for a well-documented, supported WPF component that provides an API for visualisation of 2D tree diagrams. Ideally something easy to use, customisable (i.e. supports various flavours of nodes and splines) and preferably with automated layout control. Tools that look good so far are GoXam (http://www.nwoods.com/components/silverlight-wpf/goxam-overview.htm) and yFiles WPF (http://www.yworks.com/en/products_yfileswpf_about.html). Just wondering if anyone has experience with either of these, or can recommend an alternative? Thanks!

• Documenting and defining content types for a CMS or similar project

  I'm writing up some documentation on a Drupal project and my task is to define the content types and their attributes. The intended audience is project managers and developers. So it could be a high level document that gives an overview of the system. (I think that's how I describe it: high level rather than high detail) At the moment I'm using open office and bullet points but it seems like an amateurish method when I need to describe details that could be useful for a developer (me). Something like UML would describe detail but is probably more complicated than I need right now and could be too technical for others on the team. Are there any universal methods or templates that I can use to describe information in this case?

  Hello Is there a good overview of tcp data path in Linux (2.6, not 2.4 if the path actually differ)? Where is a packet on different stages of tcp/ip stack handling? How packet is packed to tcp segment, then ip packet. How it is transmitted to network card? (with series of I/O regs write and DMA?) Is it transmitted to network card in the "write" syscall handler (with some deep callstack) or is it transmitted at some other moment?

• Curious: Could LLVM be used for Infocom z-machine code, and if so how? (in general)

  Forgive me if this is a silly question, but I'm wondering if/how LLVM could be used to obtain a higher performance Z-Machine VM for interactive fiction. (If it could be used, I'm just looking for some high-level ideas or suggestions, not a detailed solution.) It might seem odd to desire higher performance for a circa-1978 technology, but apparently Z-Machine games produced by the modern Inform 7 IDE can have performance issues due to the huge number of rules that need to be evaluated with each turn. Are there any guidelines to writing good, but not too specific, documentation and examples on how to use open source code. Often, I find good libraries, but the only documentation is in the code, making it much harder to work with. A general overview, example usage, a tutorial, and basic project layout / goals seem to be a few popular options. However, if it's a single-developer project and just starting out, the luxury of writing all that isn't there. Which is the best advice for starting documentation of a project?

• How to create a "dependency graph" for IT assets

  One of my customers is trying to create an interactive "matrix" of interdependencies for the various applications used in their company (it's a travel&leisure company with around 2500 employees). The idea (still at the prototype stage) is to create a sort of Map, based on Visio or similar tool, which traces the communication and interdependencies between all the IT assets in the company, so that when someone asks for a change they can get an overview of the impacts. This was mentioned in a casual setting and it will not be my responsability to directly work on this, but I did contribute the little I know already in terms of vaguely related methodologies (Zachman Framework). I'd like to hear from the people in here if they know of methodologies, or tools, that may help this kind of effort, and if they have any specific experience to contribute. I'll digest the answers and send the result back to my customer, hoping this may be of some help with their task (which I consider a bit visionary and prone to all the pitfalls of any documentation project, but still well worth pursuing).

• SQL Server, Generate scripts, unencrypted stored procedures only

  I have a SQL Server database with 3195 stored procedures. Most (approx 90%) of the stored procedures are encrypted (it's a 3rd party app) but there are many that are not encrypted (added by consultants later). I need to get an overview of the unencrypted stored procedures created by consultants and then apply fixes so that they can work with UTC time. I use Generate Scripts and select only stored procedures but that fails. I assume that is because the first stored procedure that it tries to write out is encrypted. Is there a way to write out the approx 300 stored procedures that are not encrypted?

  Hi, I’m currently trying to develop a method to get a overview of all my different web templates I’ve created and (legally) downloaded over the years. I thought about a displaying them like Wordpress is previewing it’s templates view a small preview windows, displaying the concrete file with styles and everything. How to divide them into rows and columns and create AJAX modal window open on preview and pagination and so on I believe I can manage, but it is the concept itself about iterate over several folders then find all index.htm / index.html pages and displaying them. I’ve not worked very much with directories in PHP and the only references and code stumps I’ve found so far is just to list all the files in a certain directory like, what it contains. I would be really grateful if someone knew about a script, a function, snippet or just could get me a nudge in the right direction to create such a (probably simple) preview function. There are so many jargons and chaos (at least for me!) while reading the pages about web services. There are so many terms - like JAX-RPC, JAX-WS, Axis, Rest, Servlet as WebService, EJB's as Web Service and other terms that I don't know. • Standard documentation of Visual Studio commands?

  Visual Studio has a concept of commands, i.e. actions executable by pressing a shortcut, entering them on the Command Window etc. Visual Studio itself documents its commands (at least some of them) but I was wondering if there is a unified way to get information about any command, e.g. coming from ReSharper, TestDriven.NET etc. What I'd like to see for every command: Textual description of the command List of parameters and their types/allowed values I've never developed a VS addon / extension so am not sure if this question even makes sense but from the user perspective, some documentation would be greatly appreciated. BTW, is the Command Window the best place to get at least an overview of all the commands available? ToolsOptionsKeyboard is another place where I can see shortcuts also but the UI is not very convenient...

  I have been doing a little reading on Flow Based Programming over the last few days. There is a wiki which provides further detail. And wikipedia has a good overview on it too. My first thought was, "Great another proponent of lego-land pretend programming" - a concept harking back to the late 80's. But, as I read more, I must admit I have become intrigued. Have you used FBP for a real project? What is your opinion of FBP? Does FBP have a future?   Overview: I have a table which stores a persons "availability" for a current day, e.g. Mon - 8:00am - 11:30am Mon - 1:30pm - 6:00pm A second table stores appointments that this person already has for the same day, e.g. Mon - 8:30am - 11:00am Mon - 2:30pm - 4pm Desired result: Doing calculationsI'd like to have the following result - e.g. "this person has availability on the given day": Mon - 8:00am - 8:30am Mon - 11:00am - 11:30am Mon - 1:30pm - 2:30pm Mon - 4:00pm - 6:00pm Any ideas on how to calculate the output given the two inputs (e.g. availability, existing appointments) would be greatly appreciated. Preferably I'd use javascript on the client to do the calculating as I would believe that doing it within the DB (I'm using MSSQL) would be slow for many records, persons, etc. Hope this is enough information to illustrate the problem at hand - Many thanks in advance.

And in almost all views, I have to do some common jobs like query Site model against database with the site_id. Also, I have to pass site_id whenever I invoke request.route_path. • IE8 positions DIV overlay wrong way and keeps playing video when it's hidden.

  Hi! Please take a look at: http://www.binarymark.com/Products/PasswordGenerator/default.aspx (the Overview tab, on the diagram). The issue is wjen you click on any of the diagram elements say "Character Groups" all browsers, except IE8 behave well - that is they display the overlay, start playing a video, and when the overlay is closed, the video stops playing an the div is hidden. IE8, on the other hand has two flaws: it positions the overlay way towards the bottom and too much to the right, and even more annoyingly - it keeps playing video in the background even when the overlay div is closed! I use flowplayer.org/tools/overlay/ for overlay. Can you help please? Thanks.

  Hi there! We are currently developing a apache2-based web application and want to invite some beta testers to give it a try. To be on the safe side, access should be provided by individual browser certificates (.p12) which are issued using a (fake) CA. Our users should be passing a complete register/login process and some of them will be granted administrative privileges within the application. That's why a preceding simple web-based authentication won't be sufficient. Atm, I using a serverside shellscript to generate the certificates each time. Do you know about a small, web-based tool to simplify the process of generating / revoking those certificates? Maybe an overview of the CA's index.txt plus the option to revoke a cert and a link to download them directly?

  I'm extending TryPython to (along with various other things) allow users to save a file and subsequently import that file. TryPython overloads the built in file operations, so I need to know what parts of import need to hooked into in order for import to use the overloaded file operations. Really, a basic overview of IronPython's import when used in Silverlight would be extremely helpful. I don't need a complete working solution (although I won't stop you from writing one! :).   Hello there, first time poster. This is a great place for reading about programming problems. I've been looking at some grid computing projects for .Net/Mono and stumbled upon NGrid. NGrid seems really appealing for grid computing because you simply pass threads to it and there is very little modification you have to make to your code. However, I see that NGrid (http://ngrid.sourceforge.net/?page=overview) is still at version 0.7 and hasn't been updated since May 2008. So, I'm wondering if there are any other grid computing projects that use a similar thread-passing architecture and if anyone has had success using NGrid.

• Django Problem - trying to access data entered into a form and feed it through a different page

  OK, so let me give you an overview first. I have this site and in it there is a form section. When you access that section you can view or start a new project. Each project has 3-5 different forms. My problem is that I don't want viewers to have to go through all 3-5 pages to see the relevant information they need. Instead I want to give each project a main page where all the essential data entered into the forms is shown as non-editable data. I hope this makes sense. So I need to find a way to access all that data from the different forms for each project and to feed that data into the new page I'll be calling "Main". Each project will have a separate main page for itself. I'm pretty much clueless as to how I should do this, so any help at all would be appreciated. Thanks

• Is it possible to manipulate the format on a DataGridView that is bound to a Data Source?

  I´m using SQL Server 2005 and Visual Studio 2008, C#. In the data source (the SQL Server data table) I use the date format mm/dd/yyyy, however, in a forms overview (DataGridView) users would like to see a completely other format, with year, week number and day number of week (yyww,d). I´ve created an algorithm for this transformation, but can I populate the affected cells with yyww,d instead of mm/dd/yyyy? And in that case - how would I do it? I guess I need to do it after the cells are populated, but before they are shown. The generic question is - how do I manipulate the format of Data Source bound DataGridView cells.
