• Proxy object references in MVC code

  Hi there, I am just figuring out best practice with MVC now I have a project where we have chosen to use it in anger. My question is. If creating a list view which is bound to an IEnumerable is this bad practise? Would it be better to seperate the code generated by the WCF Service reference into a datastructure which essentially holds the same data but abstracts further from the service, meaning that the UI is totally unaware of the service implementation beneath. or do people just bind to the proxy object types and have done with it ? My personal feeling is to create an abstraction but this seems to violate the DRY principle.

  I have an NSArrayController which is bound to a class in my Managed Object Context. During runtime the NSArrayController can have a number of different filter predicates applied. At certain intervals, I want to iterate through my NSArrayController's contents regardless of the filter predicate applied to it. To do this, I set the filterPredicate to nil and then reinstate it after having iterated through my array. This seems to work, but I'm wondering if it's best practice? Should I instead be polling my Managed Object Context manually? • In MVVM are DataTemplates considered Views as UserControls are Views?

  In MVVM, every View has a ViewModel. A View I understand to be a Window, Page or UserControl to which you can attach a ViewModel from which the view gets its data. But a DataTemplate can also render a ViewModel's data. So I understand a DataTemplate to be another "View", but there seem to be differences, e.g. Windows, Pages, and UserControls can define their own .dlls, one type is bound with DataContect the other through attaching a template so that Windows, Pages, UserControls can can be attached to ViewModels dynamically by a ServiceLocator/Container, etc. How else are DataTemplates different than Windows/Pages/UserControls when it comes to rendering a ViewModel's data on the UI? And are there other types of "Views" other than these four?

  I have some problems with ASP.NET MVC’s default model binder. The View contains HTML like this: <input name="SubDTO[0].Id" value="1" type="checkbox"> <input name="SubDTO[1].Id" value="2" type="checkbox"> This is my simplified ‘model’: public class SubDTO { public virtual string Id { get; set; } } public class DTO { public List<SubDTO> SubDTOs { get; set; } public DTO() { SubDTOs = new List< SubDTO>(); } } All this works fine if the user selects at least the first checkbox (SubDTO[0].Id). The controller ‘receives’ a nicely initialised/bound DTO. However, if the first check box is not selected but only, for example, SubDTO[1].Id the object SubDTOs is null. Can someone please explain this ‘strange’ behaviour and how to overcome it? Thanks. Best wishes, Christian

• Programming language for fast calculations with big integers

  I'm doing Project Euler problems at the moment and I can solve most of them using my own programming language which uses direct C++ integers (so they are bound to 2^32 on my machine). However, at times there are problems which require me to work with very high numbers, I can't do that with native integers. So I implemented a BigInt library in my language which unfortunately gets extremely slow at times. Is there a programming language suitable for very efficient handling of big numbers? I mean that I want to do the things I could do in other programming languages with it (variables, loops, etc.), but in a faster way. If you have got tips for workarounds of the 2^32 limit in my language/C++/other languages, please tell me too!

• Add objects to NSDictionaryController

  I have an NSTableView which is bound to an NSDictionaryController. I have set this and the content dictionary through the interface builder. The question I have is, how do I add objects to the dictionary in a manner that the controller will see it automatically and display it in the table. I've seen in examples about NSArrayController that you add the new objects through the controller rather than the actual array so the controller sees the change. However, I don't see a similar way of doing this with the dictionarycontroller... Thanks for the help.

• OpenGL ES 2.0 Rendering with a Texture

  The iPhone SDK has an example of using ES 2.0 with a set of (Vertex & Fragment) GLSL shaders to render a varying colored box. Is there an example out there on how to render a simple texture using this API? I basically want to take a quad, and draw a texture onto it. The old ES 1.1 API's don't work at all anymore, so I'm needing a bit of help getting started. Most shader references talk mainly about advanced shading topics, but I'm really unsure about how to tell the shader to use the bound texture, and how to reference the UV's. Thanks!

• How to avoid automatic renaming of sub signature parameters in visual basic 6.

  In Visual basic 6, i declare a sub like this: Private Sub test1(ByRef XmlFooOutput As String) ... End Sub after that, i declare another sub like the following one: Private Sub test2(ByRef xmlFooOutput As String) ... End Sub automagically, the first method is transformed in: Private Sub test1(ByVal xmlFooOutput As String) ... End Sub so the XmlFooOutput parameter is transformed in xmlFooOutput. This is a pretty dangerous feature because, method like those could be mapped to different XSL presentation files that read XML values through Xpath. So when test1 parameter is renamed, XSL bound to test1 method goes broken because Xpath point to XmlFooOuput but the correct value is now in xmlFooOutput. Is it possible to remove this weird feature? I'm using microsoft visual basic 6.0 (SP6).   Lets say I have a loop in bash: for foo in `some-command` do do-something $foo done do-something is cpu bound and I have a nice shiny 4 core processor. I'd like to be able to run up to 4 do-something's at once. The naive approach seems to be: for foo in `some-command` do do-something $foo & done This will run all do-somethings at once, but there are a couple downsides, mainly that do-something may also have some significant I/O which performing all at once might slow down a bit. The other problem is that this code block returns immediately, so no way to do other work when all the do-somethings are finished. How would you write this loop so there are always X do-somethings running at once?

  I know that I can dynamically add an instance method to an object by doing something like: import types def my_method(self): # logic of method # ... # instance is some instance of some class instance.my_method = types.MethodType(my_method, instance) Later on I can call instance.my_method() and self will be bound correctly and everything works. Now, my question: how to do the exact same thing to obtain the behavior that decorating the new method with @property would give? I would guess something like: instance.my_method = types.MethodType(my_method, instance) instance.my_method = property(instance.my_method) But, doing that instance.my_method returns a property object.

  I have 'div' element (recaptchaDiv) in knockout template which is not bound to any observable field: <div id="recaptchaDiv"></div> On the other hand, I update this 'div' by 3rd party library. In particular, this is google recaptcha. This is my code: Recaptcha.create("[my private key]", "recaptchaDiv", { theme: "clean", callback: Recaptcha.ToTest }); And it doesn't work (I see nothing). What I know: trying on FF console: $("#recaptchaDiv").html() - it shows the expected html code, I just can't see it in the browser What I tried: to move recaptchaDiv outside of the template and it works: I can see the captcha in the browser to bind recaptchaDiv on html property: in the template: <div id="recaptchaDiv" data-bind="html: recaptcha"></div> in the model: Recaptcha.create("[my private key]", "recaptchaDiv", { theme: "clean", callback: Recaptcha.ToTest }); recaptcha($("#recaptchaDiv").html()); and it doesn't work (replacing jquery on document.getElementById doesn't help) Any help will be very much appreciated!!! • How can I bind dynamic data to DataGridTemplateColumn in code?

  I'm using DataGrid from CodePlex. I have objects (ICustomTypeDescriptor) that have properties 'name' 'description' 'c' 'd' and so on (the names are dynamic, and so is the value) and they have information behind them. I have templates for different types. And if I have to list the properties of a single element I can just bind to the values in xaml and use datatemplateselector (in datagridtemplatecolumn) which will pick the correct template. However, when I'm listing several of the elements, how can I use the selectors and the templates? How do I get the correct property bound to the template (two-way)? • OpenGL Performance Questions

  This subject, as with any optimisation problem, gets hit on a lot, but I just couldn't find what I (think) I want. A lot of tutorials, and even SO questions have similar tips; generally covering: Use GL face culling (the OpenGL function, not the scene logic) Only send 1 matrix to the GPU (projectionModelView combination), therefore decreasing the MVP calculations from per vertex to once per model (as it should be). Use interleaved Vertices Minimize as many GL calls as possible, batch where appropriate And possibly a few/many others. I am (for curiosity reasons) rendering 28 million triangles in my application using several vertex buffers. I have tried all the above techniques (to the best of my knowledge), and received almost no performance change. Whilst I am receiving around 40FPS in my implementation, which is by no means problematic, I am still curious as to where these optimisation 'tips' actually come into use? My CPU is idling around 20-50% during rendering, therefore I assume I am GPU bound for increasing performance. Note: I am looking into gDEBugger at the moment Cross posted at Game Development

• Best method for Binding ComboBox

  I am going to be developing a large project which will include a large number of ComboBoxes. Most of these combo boxes will be bound to a database field which is a related to another daataset/table. For instance. I have the following 2 tables: Company {CompanyID, CompanyName, MainContact} Contacts {ContactID, ContactName} And when the user clicks to edit a company, A TextBox will be there to edit a company name, but also a ComboBox will be there. The way I am currently doing it is binding the ComboBox to the Contacts dataset, and manually updating the Company MainContact field in code behind. Is there anyway for me to bind the selected item to the Company MainContact field in XAML and the items to the ContactName and eliminate the code behind? Reason for this is when you start making 100's combo boxes all over the application it gets long winded each time creating code behind to do the update.

• ASP.Net Treeview - Client side event handling (jQuery??)

  I have a Treeview (bog standard ASP.Net Treeview) that is bound to an Xml source which allows the user to navigate to various parts of our system. Nothing special.... However, I wanted to generate a breadcrumb for use in the main content area on the client side when the user clicks a node in the Treeview control. I know there are mechanisms available for breadcrumb generation (such as site maps) but for various reasons I need to do it when a node is clicked. So far hooking up a click event using the document ready function available as part of jQuery is easy. However, having spent sometime looking I can not see how I navigate back up the tree nodes to get to each parent nodes text value to build the breadcrumb. I have been playing with .parent(), .parents() and .closest() available via jQuery but don't seem to be getting anywhere. Has anyone done anything like this or can anyone provide a better method? • MySQL : incrementing text id in DB

  I need to have text IDs in my application. For example, we have acceptable charset azAZ09, and allowed range of IDs [aaa] - [cZ9]. First generated id would be aaa, then aab, aac, aad e.t.c. How one can return ID & increment lower bound in transaction-fashion? (provided that there are hundreds of concurrent requests and all should have correct result) To lower the load I guess it's possible to define say 20 separate ranges, and return id from random range - this should reduce contention, but it's not clear how to do single operation in the first place. Also, please note that number of IDs in range might exceed 2^32. Another idea is having ranges of 64-bit integers, and converting integer-char id in software code, where it could be done asyncroniously. Any ideas?

  Hi Guys, Relatively new to ASP.NET MVC and little confused about how to do routing. My problem basically relates to "logged in" and "logged out routes" and having both as "/". i.e. I have home/index for logged out user which appears as "/" but this has got me confused as to how I can have home/home for logged in user and still have "/". I keep getting 127.0.0.1/home/home I could modify like 127.0.0.1/home - but I want it like "/". My confusion relates to the fact that the "/" [127.0.0.1/] is bound in the routes collection to home/index. Does anyone know how I can modify the routes dictionary (which will be binded ONCE at the start) so that the "/" can be shared for logged and non-logged users ? Thanks?

• Writing secure java code with RMI

  Hi Everyone, This may seem like a very broad question, but any help is appreciated. I have a client/server solution written in java which uses the Cajo project (which uses RMI). I just want to try and make my solution as secure as possible, given the sensitive data that will be transferred between server and client. So far, my ideas are to make all my classes "final" as well as throw a "non-serializable" exception for all my classes in the server (except for the object bound in the RMI registry, and any objects that actually do need to be transferred of course). Can anyone think of any other ideas? I know that someone could write a malicious client - this isn't hard to do as you can find out the remote object's API using reflection. However is there anything I can do to protect a malicious client access classes/objects within the server that they are not supposed to access? Many Thanks

• Dynamically reducing image dimension as well as image size in C#

  I have an image gallery that is created using a repeater control. The repeater gets bound inside my code behind file to a table that contains various image paths. The images in my repeater are populated like this <img src='<%# Eval("PicturePath")' %>' height='200px' width='150px'/> (or something along those lines, I don't recall the exact syntax) The problem is sometimes the images themselves are massive so the load times are a little ridiculous. And populating a 150x200px image definitely should not require a 3MB file. Is there a way I can not only change the image dimensions, but shrink the file size down as well? Thanks!

• How can we block the user from unchecking a DataGridView checkbox?

  We have a DataGridViewCheckBox column bound to a boolean property in our class. The property setter has some logic which says that under certain conditions a True flag cannot be changed, ie, it stays checked forever. This is on a per record basis. So the entire column can't be readonly, only certain rows. Pseudo code: Public Property Foo() As Boolean Get Return _Foo End Get Set(ByVal value As Boolean) If _Foo And Bar And value = False Then //do nothing, in this scenario once you're true, you stay true Else _Foo = value End If End Set End Property Databinding is handling all of this fine, except that the checkbox is visibly cleared when it's clicked. Then, of course, when the binding / setter is fired (as you move off that cell) it is restored to its checked status per the underlying logic. Ultimately it doesn't matter too much but it's a clumsy bit of UI. How can we intercept the user's click and keep it checked?
