  • Force Direct3D anti-aliasing in a Direct3D game?

    Some old games look really jagged nowadays on large displays without any anti-aliasing, but don't have any option built-in to the game to enable it. On a PC with an NVIDIA graphics card, it's possible to force anti-aliasing in the NVIDIA control panel which can really improve this. But I'm playing the game in Parallels on a Mac, and although the Mac has an NVIDIA graphics card, it's Parallels' emulated card that Windows sees and so obviously there's no NVIDIA control panel. Is there some generic way I can force anti-aliasing for a Direct3D game without using the NVIDIA control panel?

  • Run a local command after closing an SSH connection?

    I've set up my zsh to update the XTerm title whenever I change directories. It's neat! Unfortunately I have one common problem, which is this: % cd foo; # title changes to "host1:~/foo" % ssh host2; # title changes to "host2:~" % pwd /home/user/foo # title is still "host2:~" I need to run some command anytime an ssh connection terminates, either chpwd, or cd ., or something similar. I don't think I can use an alias, because I'd need something like alias ssh=ssh $*; cd . but AFAICT you can't pick where the arguments go in an alias.

  • How to add a Mac to Windows Active Directory

    I've gone into the Directory Utility on the mac, clicked on the services tab, entered the Active Directory Domain and Computer ID, clicked the Bind button and it showed a little status label which flickered through 5 of 5 steps and then said "An unknown error occurred". If I ignore the error and just click the OK button further down the screen and make sure the Active Directory service is ticked in the list of services, then go to the Directory Servers tab and try to add an Active Directory by entering my ad domain, computer id, admin username and password I get an error "Unable to add the domain. An unexpected error of type -14090 (eDSAuthFailed) occurred." Any ideas?

  • Windows 7 Explorer keeps crashing

    I currently have an issue with Windows Explorer. It keeps crashing when I browse through a network drive. This is happening on several computers. Note that teacup's 'search' command allows you to locate packages by subject, categories, and the like. Aborting installation, was not able to locate the requested entity.   • How to create limited user accounts in Linux

    I want to create a user account for each of the key programs installed on my debian server. For example, for the following programs: Tomcat Nginx Supervisor PostgreSQL This seems to be recommended based on my reading online. However, I want to restrict these user accounts as much as possible, so that they dont have a shell login, dont have access to the other programs and are as limited as possible but still functional. Would anyone mind telling me how this could be achieved? My reading so far suggests this: echo "/usr/sbin/nologin" /etc/shells useradd -s /usr/sbin/nologin tomcat But I think there may be a more complete way of doing it. EDIT: I'm using debian squeeze

  • Having Trouble Ripping Some CD's

    Hi, When I buy CD's I tend to rip them to FLAC right away. When ripping I use Foobar2000 or Exact Audio Copy and enable secure ripping which uses error correction. Recently I bought a 2 CD compilation album brand new but when I tried to rip the second CD on my laptop using Foobar2000 it struggled with the last 2 tracks and was unable to finish. EAC was also unable to get an accurate rip and reports read errors. Ripping in fast mode results in audible errors in the output track. I have tried another computer and having similar problems. I cannot see any damage to the disc and it has not been dropped or anything. The weird thing is that I had similar problems with a different album and different PC a while back. This other CD was a compilation disk so it was also right up to the CD capacity limit and again it was the last few tracks that would not rip. Dozens of other discs have ripped fine So I am wondering if the CD is simply defective, or whether it is something else. How common are defective CD's? Do some CD drives struggle with CD's of this capacity? Or Is this some kind of copy protection? I'm thinking of asking Amazon for a replacement but it would be annoying if I get the same problem again.

    My dad asked me how he could script the pasting/inclusion of images in various applications. I'm sure I could script out some quick <img src=... HTML but I believe he's also looking to do this in Windows GUI applications like Word or Outlook. So, how could I script a process with the following inputs and outputs: load_image_into_clipboard_script.cmd sample_file.jpg Clipboard now contains the aforementioned image file, just as if I'd e.g. opened it in Paint and done a Select All - Copy. I noticed there's a clip.exe utility with Vista/Win2003 and up; perhaps that will be a useful intermediary?

  • Stripping Non-Text from a Scanned, OCRd PDF

    I have a PDF created from a scanned document. OCR was used to recognize text. In Acrobat, if I select text, and click 'copy with formatting', I can paste the formatted text into Word, so it seems that fonts and colors are also embedded in the document in addition to just plain text and possibly the size. Is there any way to use this information to create a PDF that just contains the formatted OCRd text, without the scanned image. Currently, my document only shows the scanned image, and the text is on an invisible layer. I would like to create a PDF document that removes the image that was scanned, and displays the formatted text that is currently hidden. The following post has a section on "How can we make the invisible text visible?" PDF has an extra blank in all words after running through Ghostscript However, doing this does not show the correct text formatting (that is retained when pasting in Word), and I also would like to remove the scanned image so that the final PDF just contains formatted (color, font, size) vector fonts, and no images.

  • AviSynth ChangeFPS: combining videos with different framerates

    I have two video recordings of the same scene, but with different framerates, that I would like to combine using an AviSynth script. One video is recorded at 30fps, the other at 120fps. What I would like to do is to keep them temporally synchronised, meaning that for each frame of the 30fps video, the output should display 4 frames from the 120fps video. I would like the final output video to play at 30fps so that the duration is 4 times the original recordings. From AviSynth's documentation, it seems ChangeFPS is the function I'll need, since it removes and duplicates frames, while 'AssumeFPS' just changes the playback speed (and my plan is basically to quadruple every frame of the 30fps clip). However, the filter does not seem to do what it says. If I try: clip30 = AviSource("0326.avi").ChangeFPS(120) clip120 = AviSource("0326-120fps.avi") it doesn't affect the playback speed or frame count of the 30fps clip at all, but removes every fourth frame from the 120fps clip, which is not at all what I want. Unfortunately, appending .ChangeFPS(7.5) to the clip120 instead does not have the same inverse effect—in that case, it does exactly what's to be expected. Alternatively, if I try: clip30 = AviSource("0326.avi").AssumeFPS(7.5) clip120 = AviSource("0326-120fps.avi") there is no effect at all, both clips are played back at 30fps, meaning that only a quarter of the 120fps clip has been shown by the time the 30fps clip is over. So how can I combine these two clips in the manner I want? I was unable to find any other internal or external filters that would help me do that. It seems to me that if ChangeFPS did what the manual says, it would be the right one for the job.

  • Afraid computer is not secure

    I have recently implemented LastPass as a secure password manager. When I changed the password for my email address an associated account ([email protected]) that i had never seen before came up in association with my account. It asked me if i wanted to change password for my account and the "smithfaketester" account I used Google to try and find out what is going on, but came up empty. I am afraid my computer is bot net-ed. Any input is greatly appreciated. I have used google to search for reasons why this fake account was coming up but I did not find any meaningful info.

  • Colour table cells in Microsoft Word after mail merge

    I have an Excel spreadsheet of student data. For each of 30 topics, students are traffic lighted R, A or G (for red, amber, green) in the spreadsheet. I am mail merging individual result print-outs in Word 2010. However, rather than printing the letter R/A/G next to each topic, I would rather change the background colour of the cell to that colour. How can I do this? Is there an option with merge fields or can it be done with a macro (please provide sample code if so - I don't have experience with macros!)

  • Unable to load type error in ASP.NET 4 application on Windows Server 2003 / IIS6 -- only happens after first worker process recycle

    I'm running an ASP.NET 4.0 web application on IIS6 (Windows Server 2003 x64). This app is one of many running on this server under the Default Web Site -- but is alone on it's own application pool because the other sites are all running ASP.NET 2.0 still. When I deploy my application, it works just fine until the application pool recycles or kills its worker process (by default 2 hours or 20 minutes with no activity). After this, I get the error: "Unable to load one or more of the requested types. Retrieve the LoaderExceptions property for more information. Refreshing the page, recycling the application pool, and iisreset do nothing. But, I can bring the site back online again for a little while by simply redeploying it.   • nginx returning authentication in IE

I have a site setup that keeps requesting authentication when accessed from IE but in firefox and safari the site is fine no request for authentication. Reading around the web I can see that it could be the gzip that may be causing errors, but the other sites are working without issue.     I would like to configure Forefront Threat Management Gateway (formerly ISA server) to impersonate a specific domain user for any anonymous request to a particular listener. For example, for any anonymous request to http://www.mycompany.com, I would like to serve up http://myinternal as though MYDOMAIN/GuestAccount were accessing the site. Is this even possible in ISA/TMG? If so, where do I go to configure this?

  • Mysql replication, Slow resyncing of slave after an error

    I have a slave that got an error about a months or so ago and got way behind the master. I fixed the error and now playing catchup with the master but its going very slowly. Its going at 1.3x real time. I was using less that 10% of the db resources when these writes were first happening so the speed of the server shouldn't be an issue. Is there any settings I can switch to help the slave catch up with the master?

  • Fedora 15: em1 recently dissapeared and hostapd no longer serves internet to wirelessly connected devices

    I have a laptop running hostapd, phpd, and mysql. This laptop uses an Ethernet connection to connect to the internet and acts as a wireless access point for my workplace's wifi devices. After installing some software and reconnecting my Ethernet elsewhere, my "em1" device is no longer present and wirelessly connected devices can no longer reach the internet. The software I recently installed is: pptp, pptpd, and updated some fedora libraries. I have also recently moved my desk and laptop to another location and thus had to reconnect the Ethernet elsewhere. Wifi devices no longer have access to the internet. Wirelessly connected devices are able to successfully log into the laptop, showing full strength, correct SSID, and uses the proper password. However, when I tried to connect to a site like google, the request times out. The device "em1" also no longer appears on my machine. Running: # ifup em1 will give me the following output: ERROR : [/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifup-eth] Device em1 does not seem to be present, delaying initialization. And running: # dhclient em1 has the following output: Cannot find device "em1" When I run # dmesg|grep renamed, I get the following: renamed network interface eth0 to p4p1. I've tried to connect to the internet through p4p1 directly from the laptop and was successful. However, my wireless devices connected to my laptop are not able to connect to the internet. I have uninstalled pptp and pptpd using # yum erase ... but the problem still persists.   • Re-downloading Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Standard because of license issues?

    I have many clients who have purchased Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Standard. Unlike other Microsoft software, there is not a serial number provided for each customer to install the software. Futhermore, Microsoft's TechNet website lists this information about SQL Server instead of providing a key: "This product is pre-pidded." This means that the configuration file for SQL server contains your serial number instead of manually entering it. My question is then: does this serial change for each customer? The reason I ask: I'd rather not download a 3.2GB disc image over and over again for each of my customers individually. But, I don't want to risk using the same image over and over again resulting in Microsoft banning the serial for over use (as opposed to each customer using their copy with THEIR serial number.)
