• Does Ruby on Rails "has_many" array provide data on a "need to know" basis?

  On Ruby on Rails, say, if the Actor model object is Tom Hanks, and the "has_many" fans is 20,000 Fan objects, then actor.fans gives an Array with 20,000 elements. Probably, the elements are not pre-populated with values? Otherwise, getting each Actor object from the DB can be extremely time consuming. So it is on a "need to know" basis? So does it pull data when I access actor.fans[500], and pull data when I access actor.fans[0]? If it jumps from each record to record, then it won't be able to optimize performance by doing sequential read, which can be faster on the hard disk because those records could be in the nearby sector / platter layer -- for example, if the program touches 2 random elements, then it will be faster just to read those 2 records, but what if it touches all elements in random order, then it may be faster just to read all records in a sequential way, and then process the random elements. But how will RoR know whether I am doing only a few random elements or all elements in random?

• Can jQuery animate() behave differently for specific elements within my selection?

  I have a selection of elements in a jQuery object. I want to animate their font sizes, but as I have both the headlines and various paragraphs in the selection, they should be animated slightly differently, as the headlines should end up with a larger font size than the paragraphs. I already have this information stored in the jQuery data cache. I can do that. But, not unless I use several calls to the animate function, one for each specific, slightly different animation, perhaps using event triggering or setTimeout() calls. Of course I want to avoid this, as it's damn ugly and an odd way around. Much prettier if it could be done internally, within the animation ... Any help would be much appreciated.

  I am doing a loop of all elements inside a div, and I now need to get the classname of the element that I am looping by. • How to organize XIB files with many overlapping elements?

  I have some XIB files which are very difficult to edit because many of the subviews overlap each other completely. For example, if I position a popup volume slider where it will pop up, it covers some UILabels which become impossible to click. My only chance to be able to edit them is to double-click on them in the Document window tree, move them aside, edit, then move them back. Sometimes there are 3 or more widgets that occupy the same location in the XIB, even though only a few are visible at a time while the application is running. How are conditionally-visible screen elements actually supposed to be organized? I would like to be able to hide groups of views to reveal what's beneath them, but I don't see a way to do that in IB. If I create UIViewControllers for every group, I can edit them in separate windows, but I can't see them in context, and I need a lot of view controllers...

• which layout engine for finding coordinates of html elements on the web page?

  I am doing some web data classification task and was thinking if I could get the co-ordinates of html elements as they would appear on a web-browser without taking into consideration any css or javascript being referred in the web page. My language of programming is c++ and the need results for a couple million of pages, so it has to be fast. I know there is a Microsoft COM component which renders the page in a web browser control and then can be queried for position of different html tags. But this is not suitable in my case as it first renders the whole page which takes up a lot of time. So as I found out, there are open-source layout engines WebKit, Gecko that can probably be used for this. But that's a huge piece of code and I need someone to direct me to the right classes or right modules to look into or any previous/similar work someone has done previously. Also, please let me know what you guys think is a good choice if I want to customize the existing code for use with multiple threads to make it faster. Thanks

What is the canonical way to do #2 given a Multiset? Here is a blog post about it, but that code is not quite what I want. First, it returns everything, not just top N. Second, it copies (is it possible to avoid a copy?). Third, I usually want a deterministic sort, i.e. tiebreak if counts are equal.

  I'm currently writing a TYPO3 extension which is configured with a list of tt_content UID's. These point to content elements of type "text" and i want to render them by my extension. Because of TYPO3s special way of transforming the text you enter in the rich text editing when it enters the database, and again transforming it when it is rendered to the frontend, i can not just output the database contents of the "bodytext" field. I want to render these texts as they would usually get rendered by TYPO3. How do I do that?

• Jquery counting elements by class what is the best way to implement this?

  Ok what i'm trying to do is to count all of the elements in the current page with the same class and then i'm going to use it to be added onto a name for a input form. Basically i'm allowing users to click on an and then by doing so add another one for more of the same type of items. But i can't think of a way to count all of these simply with jquery/javascript. I was going to then name the item as something like name="whatever(total+1)", if anyone has a simple way to do this i'd be extremely grateful as javascript isn't exactly my native tongue and stack overflow usually has a ton of great answers and a great community so i'm hoping my query will not go unheard.

  I have a bunch of buttons named: button1 button2 button3 etc. Is there a way to basically do this? pseudocode for(int i = 1, i < 15, i++) { button{i}.selected = YES; } This also goes for method calls, etc. I've often thought such a way of calling methods would be very convenient, but I don't think I've ever seen it done when using compiled languages. But I have done it using PHP. Is there any way to do this in Objective-C? (That's where my problem is now, but I'd also be interested in if you can do this in other languages.) Alternately, is there a reason why this is NOT a good way to go about accessing all the UI elements? Thanks!

  I have an array in Perl I want to print with space delimiters between each element, except every 10th element which should be newline delimited. There aren't any spaces in the elements if that matters. I've written a function to do it with for and a counter, but I wondered if there's a better/shorter/canonical Perl way, perhaps a special join syntax or similar.   I need to find the last path or circle in a paper, in order to perform further calculations to draw more elements, and calling 'paper.bottom' only gets the last element. Is there any way to get shapes of specific types, e.g. bottom.path, bottom.circle or traverse for the n'th child? • Does jQuery.on() work for elements that are added after the event handler is created?

  I was under the impression all this time that .on() worked like .live() with regards to dynamically created elements (e.g. I use $('.foo').on('click', function(){alert('click')}); and then an element with the class foo is created due to some AJAX, now I'm expecting a click on that element to cause an alert). In practice, these weren't the results I got. I could be making a mistake, but could somebody help me understand the new way to achieve these results, in the wake of .on()? Thanks in advance.

  I'm trying to work out how to enlarge all elements on a page, but keep the centre of enlargement in the centre of the window. Example Page (up and down arrows to resize the image, you can also drag the image around) On this page, once the image reaches the top or the left side of the window the centre of enlargement changes. It also changes when you move the image. (exactly what you would expect) I'm thinking I'd need to take a completely different approach to achieve what I want. But I'm not sure what that approach is.. I plan on doing this by checking in my trigger event that fades the list if the count of the objects is 0 then hide the parent element. I can use the fadeOut callback to remove the elements if necessary. The to the point question: How do I select li tags inside a ul and then get the total count of them using jquery?

  I am implementing a method that when given Sum and a List. It will check to see that if you add the elements in the list, their sum is equal to the Sum given. Here is what I am trying to do thus far, but I am pretty sure it is wrong... • Easiest way to keep SSRS child elements in the same relative position when the parent is re-positioned?

  I am trying to revise the layout of an SSRS report where I have several textboxes that are child elements of a rectangle. When I reposition the parent rectangle down by x, all of the child textboxes maintain the same absolute position. Their "Location" (defined relative to the parent) decreases by x. I then need to reposition the child textboxes. Additionally, if any of these ever has a negative "Location" then the parent rectangle is then repositioned back up by x. What is the easiest way to move everything in unison? I can Control-click everything and then drag them or use the arrow keys, but I want to position everything with precision and the "Location" field in the Properties window disappears when selecting more than one item. Is there a way I can avoid individually computing and typing in every "Location" value every time I have a small layout change? I am using SSRS (11.0.3360.12) within the Visual Studio 2012 Shell.   Consider the following two elements: <button type="submit" class="button">Test</button> <a href="#" class="button">Test 2</a> ...which use the following style definition: .button { background-color: yellow; color: white; border: 1px solid orange; display: inline-block; font-size: 24pt; padding: 2px 16px; text-decoration: none; } This produces two buttons beside each other with an equal height in Chrome. However, Firefox renders the button on the left with a height 1px greater than the button on the right (the <a>): (I've enlarged the image above by 2x.)
