  I got a Dell Inspiron 1521 laptop from the local computer store, it is obviously a used machine. When I got it the data from the previous user was on it they did not do a wipe. Anyhow Dell was not being any help to me on wiping the data. Does anyone know how I get the machine to restore Windows to the factory settings. • Wireless won't connect at home but works elsewhere

  My laptop connects via a wire into the modem fine and it works without any problems but it wont connect to it wirelessly, when I've taken it out places it connects fine in wifi area's! Also my son has his Wii connected wirelessly to it from his room upstairs without any problems, so I'm not sure where the problem lies, it hasn't worked since we got the modem it did on our old one and phoning Sky is just a waste of time they dont seem to know either and I just keep getting passed round departments repeating myself!

• How to get Ubuntu to perform better on an older computer?

  Ubuntu 9.1 runs quite slugglish on my old laptop from 2004. Slower than Windows XP that was on there. It has 512mb RAM and probably 1.2ghz (can't remember) CPU. I have turned off Visual Effects under Appearance Preferences. Are there any other tricks to get better performance, or do I just need a better computer to try Ubuntu? Thanks

  my computer wont load past the windows logo, when it finishing loading the logo i see a blue screen quickly flashes on and off just a glimpse of it but i recognise that sreen anywhere i know its a serious error message screen, after that it just shows a black screen with a movable cursor, i've tried to repair, load last good configuration, but nothing seems to work, i'm running windows 7, its a toshiba laptop, 4 GB SDRAM, 320 GB HDD, Intel Pentium Processor T4200, dual core processor.

  My gateway laptop model nx570xl originally rebooted normally. I don't know when it happened, but now when i try to reboot it Keeps trying but it never happens forcing me to shut down and wait a random amt of time before it will start up again. Its very annoying and wastes a lot of my time. I don't think its a cpu overheating problem because its random when it starts up after i turn it back on. Any ideas?

According to the HP data of a more expensive variant, a AVerMedia A317 Mini PCI card installed is installed. My system has a AVerMedia A309-B mini-PCI placed in the system. my questions: 1 - is it possible to replace it with a expensive one?   I have a laptop here, a HP HDX 16 EO1000 with a Blu-Ray drive. Installed on the machine is a software package called HP MediaSmart, which presumably can play Blu-Ray movies. However, when inserting a BD disk and starting HP MediaSmart, it comes up with a warning screen and the following message: This disc has been coded for Region B only and will not play in this machine. Please eject this disc and play on a Region B player. The question is, can we change this region? The machine is in europe, which is the B-region, but apparently the drive, or software, or both, is set to some other region. I don't even know where to find the current setting so if anyone knows, please post an answer with some information of where to look.

  I have an aged Asus A2500H notebook, with a broken screen and damage to the outside. Since it has a TV-out connection, and is working good otherwise, I have it hooked up to my television as a kind of media-center to play video over LAN. I want to remove the screen as cleanly as possible, but am having trouble opening up the laptop. I've been able to remove the (broken) hinges the screen pivots on. I've also removed any other screws I could spot, but still the casing doesn't come off and seems to be attached by yet more screws I can't access (yet). I've been searching the web for disassemble instructions, I've found some for a number of other brands and models, but not for the Asus A2500H.

  Let me first just say that I know about La-Tex, and that doesn't fast enough. I use it for papers, but for "real-time" note taking it's just to heavy. I'm talking two math classes this semester. Linear algebra and discrete math, I just got a laptop with 10 hour battery life which makes me want to take notes on it!!! Openoffice with formula thingy is what I use now.   when it rains, it pours! Im helping a friend with his Dell Inspiron 1520. The hdd crashed and and top of that, the screen is cracked. I've replaced the hdd (SATA-5400), but the lcd replacement is only comin in a months time. I've tried to: hook the laptop up to an Acer 18.5" lcd monitor via VGA, boot up into Windows 7 installer, get to the Step-1 screen, Switch to external display (Function-F8) ...and get the "Input not supported" message on the Acer lcd. I know that this is a resolution problem, but cant for the life of me figure out how to solve this. I've also tried, hooking it up to my TV via Composite cables (got a VGA-Composite adaptor). Please could someone advise me what to do? -Thank u!

• Internet speed is suddenly slow only on my laptop, but it's normal in other devices

  I have a TP-Link router connected to a ZTE modem, with 2 laptops, a tablet, 2 phones connected via the router's WiFi, and an additional desktop connected via ethernet to the router. Today, my laptop started to have a very slow connection to the internet, which at first I thought it was the operator's problem to find out later on that it works fine on other devices. I tried to connect directly via WiFi to the modem, but it was as slow. I cannot access facebook at all, google takes forever to do a search, and youtube barely works. The weird thing though, is that when youtube does work, the streaming is full speed. This happens also when I download a file! My browse is Firefox, but I used Chrome and IE9 with the same results. I work on Windows 7 Thanks for any advices.

  I am trying to install Windows Server 2008 R2 on a new Lenovo X201 or T410 laptop. Setup halts with the following pop-up: A required CD/DVD device driver is missing. If you have a driver floppy disk, CD, DVD, or USB flash drive, please insert it now. Note: If the windows installation media is in the CD/DVD drive you can safely remove it for this step. The CD drive is obviously working, as it's booting from CD to get to this point. The only thing I can think is that it is to do with the fact they have SSD disks in - but that's just a guess. (Edit - One extra thing that may or may not be relevant: it's the 64 bit version of Server 2008 R2)

Is there any way to calculate to what battery time this amounts in hours ? I mean how many hours will the 24 Wh last (at normal operation - eg. writing a document - not watching video), else the +254% is a pretty useless number... Also anybody knows whether 4 cells means 4 times 24 Wh, or 24 Wh in total?

• How to get rid of resume information on ubuntu 9.10 ("karmic")

  I am on an old laptop with Ubuntu 9.10 installed. I once tried to not shutdown but go into one of the resume states. On the next power on, resume did not work, but there was an error message during boot asking me for the resume image (which I do not have or know of) and when I press enter the normal boot happens. But this error pops up on every boot now. How can I get back the behaviour from before? Why does the boot process guess there would be a resume image and can I delete this information? I would like to post here the error messages from the boot proces, but they are not in /var/log/syslog, where else can they be?

No listening for incoming SMTP connections - outgoing only Ability to route outgoing mail via an external SMTP server with authentication (and perhaps encryption) If not Postfix, I need an MTA which can queue up mails in case it temporarily has no internet connection.
