  • How to create iso dvd image for use with Mac OS X's "Disk Utility"?

    - by adolf garlic
This seemed way easier on my pc. I would just pop a blank dvd in the drive, it asked what I wanted to do with it, to which I would respond, "burn dvd with nero" (paraphrasing), then I would pick "new" and just drag and drop the folders in there. Mac appears to have "Disk Utility" which just requires that I 'choose an image' but then doesn't bother to detail: how to do this what the options mean e.g. format "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" is that ever going to be readable on a non Mac machine? I want to create an ISO standard DVD as per the 'default' you'd get on nero. All the stuff on the web points to doing things with 'Terminal' (the whole point of buying a Mac was to get away from command line jiggery pokery - I'm trying to burn some photos not land a friggin lunar module here!) Please, if you can just provide some simple instructions on what I need to achive this I'd be extremely grateful. Ta muchley in advance.

  • How can I lock my Mac when I walk away?

    - by schnapple
This has got to be an easy, trivial question but as a new Mac user, how can I lock my Mac when I walk away? On Windows this is dead simple - Win+L. Or hit Ctrl-Alt-Del and select "Lock this Computer" The best thing I've found for the Mac is to rig the screensaver to require password on wake, set a hot corner to fire off the screen saver, and do that as I leave. Which feels really "Windows 3.1" to me. Is there a Win+L-style method to quickly lock my Mac when I walk away?

  • What Linux distro should I install on an old PowerPC Mac?

    - by rockit
I'm trying to set up my brother–who has a PPC Mac with 1 GHz processor and 256 MB RAM–with a Linux distro that would allow him to surf the web on the device. If anyone knows of this Mac, they also know that support has faded for the latest browsers, rendering the device essentially useless when it comes to the web. Ideally I would have installed Jolicloud, but alas, it is only Intel Mac compatible... Please let me know if you have any suggestions for me!

  • What do I need to write Japanese (kanji) on my Mac?

    - by Ken
I have a Macbook, but it's slightly too old to use Mac OS X 10.6's trackpad Chinese input. I have a Wacom tablet, but even though Mac OS X has had tablet character recognition since 10.2 and now knows Chinese characters, they're separate enough that it apparently can't put these two together and read Chinese characters I write on my Wacom. But I'm sure somebody has a way to let me do this. What software do I need to let me write Japanese kanji on my Wacom tablet under Mac OS X?

  • How do I crop an image in the Mac version of Microsoft Word?

    - by Bec
I know how to do it in the Windows version of Word but I can't work out how in the Mac version. In Windows there's a crop tool where you can just drag to move the edges in to crop the image, how do I do that on the Mac? Also on the old version of Windows there was a command to delete the cropped sections of all images in a document to save file space, I can't find that in Word 2007 or Word for Mac.

  • Is NVIDIA GeForce GTX 480 Video Card Compatbile with a Mac Pro Running Windows 7 Pro 64?

    - by aquat33nfan
I have a Mac Pro (early 2008) and I'm running Windows 7 Pro (64 bit) natively (i.e., with just Windows installed and no OSX or boot camp) on it. If I buy an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 480 video card, will it work or do I have to buy a card that is Mac-specific (e.g., GeForce GTX 285 'for Mac')? Also, more generally, will Windows video cards work on Intel Macs running Windows (in case I pick a cheaper card)? I can't tell if it matters that a Mac does not have a bios. I searched other boards and I gathered that video cards would work fine because Windows has the proper drivers for them and OSX doesn't and not having the BIOS doesn't make a difference. I found one thread on here that seemed to indicate that as well, but I wanted to make sure. Thanks.

  • While using an ntfs smb share for mac users, do symbolic links and extended attributes work?

    - by scape
We have a majority of mac users but we'd rather support their file sharing using a Windows server with an ntfs drive, or at least a Linux server with ext3. We've had trouble, much trouble, utilizing the OS X server software and after the years are now looking to abandon it. What's mostly holding us back is the fact that the mac users very often utilize symbolic links and other special features that exist for an HFS+ partition. The shared locations are mostly primary storage and not just used as an archive storage location. While there is an option to create symbolic links under ntfs, I'm curious if there is anything I need to look out for if I were to move the files over to a new partition that's hosted from a Windows server from the HFS+ partition; in addition, how well creating a symbolic link from a mac might work. I am also worried about windows backup software and if it will ruin these special sym links, and how placing permissions on sub-folders will work. Alternatively I could remotely backup the files using a mac and Bru, nonetheless I still want to get away from mac server for hosting the shares.

  • Desktop Provisioning for a Small Linux Software Development Team

    - by deakblue
Goal: Get a small team using a standard development image rather than 4 software devs setting up their own environments. Why: it takes a day or days to install a distro, build-specific libraries, tools like editors and IDEs, mysql, couchdb, java, maven, python, android-sdk, etc. It's a giant PITA that when repeated 4 times by 4 developers (not sys admins) wastes time and generates annoying divergences that crop up later (it-builds-on-my-box syndrome). There's no sharing of productivity, settings, tricks, scripts, set-ups. Some of this is helped by segregating the build systems into headless virtualbox images. This doesn't really address tooling though or the GUI-desktop dev that needs doing. So I see three basic strategies, ghosting, virtualization, and finally creating a kind of in-house linux distro (I guess Google does something like this). The target dev environment is based on Debian OpenBox and must allow a mix of 3rd gen Core i7 notebooks 8GB-minimum to work both single and multihead. Important, the lappies are not the same, but a mix of 2012 macbooks and PCs. So: virtualization: is doing all of your work within a VM, like VirtualBox, practical on this hardware or annoying. ghosting: will laptops from different manufacturers make this impractical. DIY distro: short of scripting a bunch of package installs, I don't know if there's any "distro-maker" that could keep this from being an epic project of scripting package installs. So any advice?

  • Boot Camp: is it possible to restart directly to Windows from Mac OS X?

    - by Jonik
With the Boot Camp tools installed on Windows, there's an option for rebooting directly to Mac OS ("Restart in Mac OS X" from Boot Camp system tray item). But is this possible in the opposite direction? In other words, instead of the procedure 1) "Restart", 2) wait for OS X to shut down, 3) hold Option key (?), and 4) select the Windows partition, can I tell my Mac to restart so that Windows is selected on the next boot? Something like "Restart in Windows" which would let me bypass steps 2-4. NB: I want to keep Mac OS X as the default OS; I'm just looking for a convenient shortcut when normally running OS X and occasionally wanting to boot to Windows.

  • How's the latency with Mac VNC on Windows PC using a crossover cable?

    - by Vadoff
I use a Windows 8 PC as my main system, and do some programming with Xcode which I use a virtual machine for. However, it doesn't run as smoothly as I would like, so I'm thinking about purchasing a Mac Mini. My question is if I connect my PC to the Mac Mini directly (via crossover cable, firewire, or usb), would I be able to control the Mac using VNC with almost no latency? If not, is there any other way I'd be able to use both my PC and the Mac Mini simultaneously (using the same peripherals)?

  • Will any USB DVD reader work with Apple Mac's?

    - by Kev
Following on from this question: Can Apple Macintosh computers boot from a USB volume? Can I use any USB 2.0 DVD drive to boot a Mac from? I had a look around my local PC World today and only the more expensive drives explicitly state on the packaging that they were Mac compatible. Is this just because these products have been through Apple's hardware approval/testing programme, or do Mac's have some special requirement?

  • The Mac Tax

    - by Robert May
One of our users was having difficulties with their mac and using some web software.  I decided to go peruse the landscape and see how much of a premium people were paying for their macs.  I priced out a Dell and a Mac from their websites.  I tried to get them as close to the same configuration, from a hardware standpoint, as I could.  I found the following: Apple Macbook Pro   Dell XPS 17 There are several important differences in the hardware: The mac doesn’t have a blueray player, but the dell does. The mac has a slightly slower processor. The mac claims to have a better battery, but doesn’t list the specifics, so there’s no way to tell. The mac doesn’t list the video card stats, so there’s no way to tell how comparable they are, but they’re probably close. The mac doesn’t come with any additional software.  No iWorks, iPhoto, etc.  They were left to their default of None, so arguably, the Dell is more functional out of the box. Other than changing the hardware specs to be close, all other configuration options were left at their default. So riddle me this, Batman:  Why do people buy Macs?  I have several dev buddies that own them, but I can’t justify the cost.  First, most of them load bootcamp and/or parallels at extra cost to run windows 7 and windows apps.  The hardware isn’t as good.  The price is almost twice as expensive. How do you justify the premium price? Technorati Tags: General

  • 1000Base-X layer 2/MAC address details

    - by user69971
A layer 2 Ethernet frame is sent with a source and destination MAC address. Given a 100Base-TX (copper) trunk between two Cisco switches, I can do a "show interface fa 0/0" on S1 to see the MAC address assigned to the trunking interface, then go to Switch2 and do a "show mac address-table" and find the MAC address of the S1 fa 0/0 interface as a dynamically learned MAC in the table. Given a similar setup with a 1000Base-X (fiber GBIC) trunk, the MAC address shown in "show interface gi 0/0" on S1 does not show up in the MAC address-table of S2. Everything I can find online indicates that 1000Base-X uses largely the same layer 2 format as copper connections. There's some slight alterations - minimum frame size is slightly larger - but the fundamentals of the frame structure appear to be the same, including transmission with a source and destination L2 address. Why doesn't the address of gi 0/0 show up in the MAC address table of the connection switch? The only thing which seems to make sense would be that the GBIC has its own MAC address, almost as if its acting as a mini 2-port switch or hub, with the switch-assigned MAC address showing up on the interface connection and a different MAC address assigned to the fiber side. If this is the case, is there any way to see the GBIC MAC address on the switch? (I've tried to look up the details in IEEE 802.3z but it doesn't seem to be available without an IEEE membership or purchasing the standard. I find the base 802.3 PDFs for download, but not 802.3z.)

  • Mac - Flash file not loaded in independent flash player

    - by Mugdha
Hi, I am working on an independent application to play flash files on Mac. I have already done the same for Linux, and it works flawlessly but on mac for some reason flash is not drawing to my window. It is not throwing any kind of error too. I am using Flash player 10, that would mean that I am using the Core Graphics drawing model. I am able to send mouse events to flash and wrote a sample plugin to check if there was a problem in the context that I was sending, but my sample plugin draws properly to the window. I am getting a call for NPN_InvalidateRect twice and as a response I send an update Event back to flash. I drew a dummy rectangle to check that my context is correct. I have flipped the context to make the origin as top left corner. On doing right click on the debug version of the flash player it shows the following message: "Movie not loaded..." Can anyone give me any idea why is the content not being drawn? I would really appreciate the help, as I have been struggling with it for more than a month now. Here is a small log of the interaction that I have with flash: NPN_UserAgent Called NPN_GetValue Called with variable NPNVWindowNPObject; return NULL NPN_GetValue Called with variable NPNVWindowNPObject; return NULL NPN_GetValue Called with variable NPNVSupportsWindowless; return true NPN_SetValue Called for Variable - NPPVpluginTransparentBool; return true NPN_GetValue Called with variable NPNVsupportsCoreGraphicsBool; return true NPN_SetValue Called for Variable - NPNVpluginDrawingModel NPP_SetWindow (CoreGraphics): 0, window=0xebaa90, context=0xe4c930, window.x:0 window.y:22 window.width:480 window.height:270 NPP_HandleEvent(activateEvent) accepted:0 isActive: 1 NPP_HandleEvent(updateEvt) accepted: 1 NPN_UserAgent Called NPN_GetURLNotify Called with URL - javascript:top.location+"flashplugin_unique" NPN_GetValue Called with variable NPNVWindowNPObject; return NULL NPP_NewStream URL=/Users/mjain/Desktop/clock.swf MIME=application/x-shockwave-flash error=0 NPP_WriteReady responseURL=/Users/mjain/Desktop/clock.swf bytes=268435455 NPN_InvalidateRect Called NPP_Write responseURL=/Users/mjain/Desktop/clock.swf bytes=9925 total-delivered=9925/9925 NPP_WriteReady responseURL=/Users/mjain/Desktop/clock.swf bytes=268435455 NPP_DestroyStream responseURL=/Users/mjain/Desktop/clock.swf error=0 NPP_HandleEvent(updateEvt) accepted: 1 NPN_InvalidateRect Called NPP_HandleEvent(updateEvt) accepted: 1 NPP_NewStream URL=javascript:top.location+"flashplugin_unique" MIME=text/plain error=0 NPP_WriteReady responseURL=javascript:top.location+"flashplugin_unique" bytes=16000 NPN_UserAgent Called NPP_Write responseURL=javascript:top.location+"flashplugin_unique" bytes=52 total-delivered=52/52 NPP_WriteReady responseURL=javascript:top.location+"flashplugin_unique" bytes=16000 NPP_DestroyStream responseURL=javascript:top.location+"flashplugin_unique" error=0 NPP_URLNotify responseURL=javascript:top.location+"flashplugin_unique" reason=0 Thanks Mugdha.

  • Creating a Sharepoint Development Environment from an Existing Production Environment

    - by Starky
I have very little experience using Sharepoint but a good amount using Visual Studio 2008, SQL Server 2005, Windows Server 2003 and IIS6. I need to create a development environment for a SharePoint 2007 system that will be used internally. The system is already deployed over two servers - one of the servers simply holds the database and everything else is on the other server. We are also using WSS 3.0. I have created a Virtual Machine with all the required software including a clean installation of SharePoint Server 2007 and I wish to use this single Virtual Machine as the development environment. Right now there are no custom assemblies being used on the production server as far as I am aware. There are 3 websites, one over port 80 for user accesss, one over a custom port for central administration, and one over another custom port. Not sure what the last one is for but my blank instance of Sharepoint on my Virtual Machine also has something similar. I attempted to use the STSADM tool to backup and restore these 3 sites from my production environment to my development environment and while the operations completed succesfully, the central administration site in my development environment acted strangely and I could not access port 80 - I did not seem to have correct credentials for it. I suspected that it would not have been so simple so could I please have advice on how to create my development environment so that I can use it to deploy updates to the production one.

  • Positioning 1px off in Safari/Mac but works on Safari/Windows

    - by McGirl
I'm beating my head against a wall on this one; the logo image ("It's All About Revenue") shifts up by one pixel in Safari on Mac, but renders correctly in all other browser/OS combinations I've been able to test. Does anyone have any ideas on why this might be? Here's the site: http://blog.eloqua.com/ Thanks in advance for your help!

  • Powerful search-replace GUI app for Mac?

    - by fig-gnuton
What's the best dedicated search-and-replace GUI tool on a Mac? "Find & Replace It!" seems decent, but they've ridiculously disabled the replace function in the demo, so I can't give it a real test before paying. Is there anything else comparable or better?
