• Has anyone done CSDP certification?

  I was looking at some certifications that can potentially enhance my knowledge and market value as a Software Engineer. IEEE's Certified Software Development Professional (CSDP) caught my attention. When I looked on the net for any user experiences with it I couldn't find anything substantial. Doesn't seem too popular. And I certainly havent heard of anyone in my organization or friends circle who have done it. I would like to know from community members if anyone has done this certification and their experiences with the same. Was the certification useful in terms of knowledge. Did it add weight to your resume (not deadweight!)?

• Is there any advantage in using DX10/11 for a 2D game?

  I'm not entirely familiar with the feature set introduced by DX10/11 class hardware. I'm vaguely familiar with the new stages added to the programmable graphics pipeline, such as the geometry shader, the compute shader, and the new tesselation stages. I don't see how any of these make much of a difference for a 2D game though. Is there any compelling reason to make the switch to DX10/11 (or the OpenGL equivalents) for a 2D game, or would it be wiser to stick with DX9 considering that that a significant share of the market still runs on older technologies (e.g. the February 2012 Steam surveys lists around 17% of users as still using Windows XP)?

• The payment argument is nonsense

  In response to my HTML5 apps argument a few people came back to how the payment thingy is missing from my idea, and how it will (apparently) be worthless because of that. I’ve been thinking about that a lot in the past few days, and I’m increasingly of the opinion that the payment argument is nonsense.Sure, everybody who does iPhone apps, or who’s glancing cursorily at the mobile market without trying to gain in-depth knowledge, currently believes that the App Store concept is going to be a huge...Did you know that DotNetSlackers also publishes .net articles written by top known .net Authors?   UPDATED: HP still sells 17" WUXGA laptops - details in the new paragraph at the end. Lenovo, Dell, Sony and Sager do not sell a 1920x1200 (WUXGA) laptop. I understand that manufacturers provide what there is market demand for. I also understand that HDTV and the 1080p standard is heavily influencing both monitor and laptop screen resolutions. But I do not understand why there is so little demand for a WUXGA laptop. Nor do I understand the popularity of glossy displays. I really don't like to look...(read more)

  There might be a situation where one of my clients won't pay for the web site that I've made. So I am wondering if it is possible to sell a web site? It is an internet shop, so there is no content that comes with it, but the source code is fully available, and it has a decent design. I've seen people trying to sell web site templates, and I've seen people who try to sell already running web sites, and there are plenty of commercial web site engines out there. But what about raw empty web sites, is there a market for them?

  Kind of a REST lightweight here... Wondering which url scheme is more appropriate for a stock market data app (BTW, all queries will be GETs as the client doesn't modify data): Scheme 1 examples: /stocks/ABC/news /indexes/XYZ/news /stocks/ABC/time_series/daily /stocks/ABC/time_series/weekly /groups/ABC/time_series/daily /groups/ABC/time_series/weekly Scheme 2 examples: /news/stock/ABC /news/index/XYZ /time_series/stock/ABC/daily /time_series/stock/ABC/weekly /time_series/index/XYZ/daily /time_series/index/XYZ/weekly Scheme 3 examples: /news/stock/ABC /news/index/XYZ /time_series/daily/stock/ABC /time_series/weekly/stock/ABC /time_series/daily/index/XYZ /time_series/weekly/index/XYZ Scheme 4: Something else??? The point is that for any data being requested, the url needs to encapsulate whether an item is a Stock or an Index. • Suspend/hibernate doesn't work on an Asus Laptop

  I'm having issues suspending 11.04 on my new Asus U30sd-XA1 laptop, it's a new laptop on the market and I'm wondering if anyone else has had this issue and maybe have a fix for it. Basically whenever I close or put the laptop to sleep the screen goes black but the video card doesn't actually turn off, then the fan spins up even faster then it was before and gets hot. I did see that some people were having similar issues on other laptops and they set the kernal back. I'm newish to ubuntu and I'm not super comfortable messing with the kernal. If anyone has any other solutions that would be great. I am not using the 520m nvidia driver because it won't load unity after it's installed. I've also heard quite a few bad things about the drivers on the ubuntu forums, so I deactivated the driver.

Are they any publishers, sponsors, or distributors to make your game "visible" on the app store market?, or the only thing you need is to have an amazing game and that's all? Somehow I think that even if you have an awesome game if you don't do that "marketing magic" correctly you will not exist in the store. Now I'm making a second game, completely different, and I want to know how to do things right. If anyone knows something about this topic, let me know.

• Developing a DVR software using a hardware KIT

  I'm currently thinking about a project for my masters degree graduation. I start researching for options to make my own video streaming software based on a premade hardware kit having not much knowledge about what I'll exactly need that will match my needs. My search led me to the DVR (Digital Video Recorder) cards which seems to be the closest to what I need, but still I can't find out a few basic things so I decide to ask for them here. Currently I haven't find a lot of manufacturers that offers such kits so where I can look and have some options to choose from? There are a lot of DVR products on the market but they already have a software written for them and even if I buy one they just don't give any documentation or sdk's so buying such is not an option I need a DVR card made exactly for software programers and not end users. Are there a preferred manufacturers that provide such kind of devices with good and developer-friendly documentation? Also - I prefer to do all this with Java, is this an option (I think I will make it with .NET too but really prefer Java as a language of choice)

• What are my options for selling software independently on Windows?

  I am looking to port a tool from the Mac app store over to Windows, the platform where I spend most of my time these days. I've spoken with the author of the original app and we've begun talking about licensing options should I decide to sell the application, and it seems like it would be feasible. I've never sold software independently, let alone on Windows. That I know of, there is not (yet) an equivalent app store for Windows (maybe one coming with Windows 8). Assuming my product was done today and I was ready to go to market, what options do I have for selling software for Windows as an independent developer or Micro-ISV? I know can sell it through my own website and accept PayPal, but are there options that will offer more visibility, similar to that of the Apple app stores? Any options to avoid?

• Does 64-bit Ubuntu work on the Acer Aspire One D255

  The Acer Aspire One D255 is the cheapest dual core netbook on the market right now. It has an Intel Atom N550 which should be able to run a 64-bit OS. But when I try to boot the Ubuntu 64-bit live CD I only get one line of diagnostic output that it "found something" on the USB CD drive before locking up. I haven't been able to find anything by Googling yet. Could it just be driver issues for this machine or could the platform be inherently frail for running 64-bit? (My machine is two days old on trial and Windows 7 and Ubuntu 32-bit run but it has locked up under casual use on both OSes.)

• Too much to learn, so little time

  Okay, so I'm a java developer (or at least I think I am),and also a student at the same time I want to get a job when I graduate,I'll be graduating in a year or so (hopefully) (Note: my major has nothing to do with programming) Now, I'm between a rock and a hard place I also want to nail the foundations to become a good software developer. I want to be able to write programs that solve problems,not just glue code The software market in my country for java developers is just a few developers working with Java EE (struts,spring,hibernate....etc) I'm currently learning C++ with this book. I've also watched most of the 1st lecture of this course and I understood pretty much everything I watched To sum it up, I have three options Learn Java EE Learn C++ Learn Scheme Which is better for me at this point?

• As an IT contractor, is it better to be a specialist or a jack-of-all-trades? [on hold]

  I've just entered the contracting market as a web developer and I've having a tough time figuring out how to plan for the future. Several developers I've worked with in the past have told me to become a specialist in one technology/area in order to secure the big contracts. However I've also heard from other sources that it's better to spread your expertise so that you're not limited in the types of work you can go for. Personally I've pretty much been involved in both back and front-end technologies during the course of my career, with slight variations in the weighting of each depending on the job. I don't really have a favourite - I enjoy it all. My question is mainly to the experienced contractors though: Do you feel specialising has helped your career or is it better to know a bit of everything? Thanks
