  • Open XML SDK 2 Released

Permalink This post is a little late since the SDK was released about a week ago.  At PSC we have been using the Open XML SDK 2 since its earliest beta.  It is a very powerful tool for generating documents without using the Office DLLs.  It is also the main technology that I have been working with for the last six months.  I would suggest giving it a try.  Stay tuned here.  In the near future I will be presenting at different locations on this and other document generation technologies.   • Ports do not open after rules appended in iptables

    I have a server that I am trying to setup for OpenVPN. I have followed all the steps, but I see that when I try to connect to it in Windows, it doesn't allow me, it just hangs on connecting, so I did a nmap scan and I see that port 1194 is not open so naturally I append the rule to open 1194 with: iptables -A INPUT -i eth0 -p tcp --dport 1194 -j ACCEPT followed by service iptables save and service iptables restart which all executed successfully. Then I try again, but it doesn't work and another nmap scan says that port 1194 is closed.   • What is the keyboard shortcut to clear formatting on Office 2008 Mac?

    I recently switched from a PC to a brand new Macbook Pro. I was happy to see that most of the keyboard shortcuts in Word 2008 where the same or almost the same than in Word 2007. However, there is one keyboard shortcut that I dearly miss : the clear formatting shortcut (ctrl + space on Windows). I know the feature exists since it's in the formatting bar, but I can't find the keyboard shorcut. I tried cmd + space but that is the system keyboard shortcut to switch the keyboard type. alt + space delete the text without deleting the formatting. ctrl + space doesn't seem to do anything. Does anyone know what the keyboard shortcut for the clear formatting command may be? I hope there's one because it's really painful to reach for the mouse everytime I put a title and I want to switch to a normal paragraph style...

  • How do I add a version number field to an office 2007 docx document?

    I've been having a crack at using fields in Word 2007 and have hit a slight stumbling block. I want to add a field which I can use in several parts of the document to represent the current version (something of the form v0.1 but I can't see an obvious way to do it). The only provision I've found for this is something called RevNum but that gets updated every time I save the document. Is there a field I've missed or a way of adding custom fields or something?

    I'm asking this as an opinion question. How does everyone treat email links opening in a new window if their default email client is web based? This way? <a href="mailto:[email protected]">email me</a>. It will open fine for app based email clients but open in the same window for web based clients. This way? <a href="mailto:[email protected]" target="_blank">email me</a>. It will open in a new tab for web based email clients but open a blank tab. I cant really seem to find the best of both worlds. What does everyone else do?

    I can't get the following bash script to stay open after the first message is received from NC: #!/bin/bash port=3333 nc -l $port | while read msg; do notify-send Alert "$msg"; done After the first message it exits. I want it to stay open and continue monitoring for new messages from NC. I know that if I launch nc -l port without the while loop it stays open and I can chat away between the two connections even disconnect from the connected host.   • How do I open WPS files in Word Starter 2010?

    Ok, this is driving me crazy. My parents have 100s of old WPS documents from an ancient version of MS Works, and they just bought a new computer with MS Word 2010 Starter on it. I ap trying to set it up so that the default program to open the WPS files is MS Word, but there is no EXE anywhere in program files or programfilesx86. I opened up process explorer and tried to figure out where the executable for Word is, and it turns out it is on the Q drive... the same Q drive that seems to be inaccessible no matter what I try. I tried adding the exact address of Word, but if I try and set that on anything, it says that it cannot find the file. This is driving me insane, is there any way to make it real easy to open these WPS files in Word?!?

  • Should a poll framework be closed sourced

    I was having a chat with a coworker who is working on a polling app and framework. He was asking technical questions and I suggested he open source the application to get more quality opinions from developers who are interested in this problem and are willing to give it heavy though. He has a different point of view which I think is still valid so I want to open this question for discussion here. He says he believes something like a polling framework should not be open sourced because it will reduce its security and validity as people reveal loopholes through which they can cheat. Can't say I completely disagree. I see a somewhat valid point there, but I always believed that solutions by a group of people are almost always better than a solution thought by a single person asking a small number of coworkers, no matter how smart that person is. Again I'm willing to accept that maybe some types of applications are different. Does anyone have an argument in his favor? I'd really like to present your responses to him.
