  • Is it illegal to rewrite every line of an open source project in a slightly different way, and use it in a closed source project?

    There is some code which is GPL or LGPL that I am considering using for an iPhone project. If I took that code (javascript) and rewrote it in a different language for use on the iPhone would that be a legal issue? In theory the process that has happened is that I have gone through each line of the project, learnt what it is doing, and then re implemented the ideas in a new language. To me it seems this is like learning how to implement something, but then re-implementing it separate from the original licence. Therefore you have only copied the algorithm, which arguably you could have learnt from somewhere else other than the original project. Does the licence cover the specific implementation or the algorithm as well?

  • COM interop, Office 2010 x64 and Visual Studio 2010.

    Hi, I just installed Offic 2010 x64 on my Windows 7 x64 laptop. It already had Visual Studio 2010 on it. Now I try to add Microsoft.Office.Interop.Excel or something to the project, but it just can't find the project. When I try to open a project from the website of Microsoft (a sample of Office development) Visual Studio says that that kind of project is not supported. How is this possible? Is it a problem that I installed x64 of Office? Or is the problem Visual Studio 2010? Thanks

    I purchased a copy of Microsoft Office Student Edition last year. My computer's hard drive crashed which meant that I had to reinstall the software and use the serial code again. It is now telling me though that the number of uses has been exceeded. Is there a way to tell Microsoft that I'm trying to validate on the same machine that I was already operating on? I really don't want to have to purchase it again to run on the same machine that it was already running on.

  • How to give everyone access to a office@companyname address and let everyone see what messages were

    This should be simple (because I assume everyone has this problem) but googling and searching of serverfault didn't help much. I'd like all messages sent to our "office@companyname" to be visible by everyone and I'd like anyone to be able to respond. I also need everyone to at least SEE that a given message has already been answered (the ability to see the actual response would be nice). I tried using an shared folder for this but it fails miserably because replying to emails leaves no trace, not even for the user that actually sent the message. I'm open to any kind of solution, even commercial add-on solutions.

  • How to prevent Spell checking code in MS Office?

    We use MS Office. Outlook for emails, Word for some documentation and I use OneNote a lot for my own note taking. What bugs me is when I drop some code or use key words or even camel case into these apps the spell checking picks them up and I have red squiggles everywhere. Ignore is pretty much useless, so either I have to turn off Spell Check altogether start adding these to the custom dictionary. What would be good is if I can use the Set Language function to mark a whole block of text to just not be spell checked. Has anyone found a nice solution to this or do you know of a blank dictionary is best to use? I found using "Mohawk" kind of does that... might just use that for now. Maybe create a macro to switch between them.

    I am running Office Communicator 2007 R2 and Outlook 2010 on a Microsoft Exchange Server 2010. I am storing my conversation history from Communicator in Exchange in the default folder, "Conversation History". I'm using the conversation view in Outlook. And I have a Gmail-like macro to archive my conversations to an "Archive" folder. I want to search all my mail and conversations at once. By default, Outlook is searching in the current folder only. I tried creating a rule to move the conversations to my Archive folder, but couldn't configure it correctly.

  • How can I modify the "Picture Styles" shortcut gallery in Microsoft Office (Word and Powerpoint, specifically)?

    The Microsoft Office Ribbon has a convenient gallery of styles to apply to pictures, shown here. It functions much like the Quick Styles gallery in Word for quickly applying formatting to text. But whereas one can create a new text style and add it to the Quick Styles gallery, I haven't been able to find a way to do the same with the Picture Styles gallery. The default styles aren't what I need, and the styles I do need involve changing multiple settings, so a shortcut would be nice. Am I stuck just using the copy-paste format options?

  • Update Since Microsoft/PSC Office Open XML Case Study

    In 2009 Microsoft released a case study about a project that we had done using the OOXML SDK 1.0 for Research Directors Inc.  Since that time Microsoft has released version 2.0 of the SDK and PSC has done significant development with it.  Below are some of the mile stones we have reached since the original case study. At the time of the original case study two report types had been automated to output as PowerPoint presentations.  Now that the all the main products have been delivered we have added three reports with Word document outputs and five more reports with PowerPoint outputs. One improvement we made over the original application was to create a PowerPoint Add-In which allows the users to tag a slide.  These tags along with the strongly typed SDK 2.0 allows for the code to use LINQ to easily search for slides in the template files.  This allows for a more flexible architecture base on assembling a presentation from copied slide extracted from the template. The new library we created also enabled us to create two new Word based reports in two weeks.  The library we created abstracts the generation of the documents from the business logic and the data retrieval.  The key to this is the mark up.  Content Controls are a good method for identifying sections of a template to be modified or replaced.  Join this with the concept of all data being generically either scalar or two dimensional and the code becomes more generic.   • Share OneNote 2010 Notebooks with OneNote 2007

    OneNote is the new star of the Office Suite, and is included in every edition of Office 2010.  OneNote’s file format has been changed in the 2010 version, so here’s how you can still share your notebooks with those using OneNote 2007. Convert your OneNote Notebooks to 2007 Format If you open a notebook from OneNote 2010 in OneNote 2007, you may see this warning informing you that the notebook was created in a newer version of OneNote and cannot be opened. To make your 2010 notebooks compatible with OneNote 2007, you need to convert them inside OneNote 2010.  In OneNote 2010, open the File menu; this should open to the Info tab by default.  Select the Settings button beside the notebook you want to use in OneNote 2007, and select Properties. In the properties dialog, click “Convert to 2007”. You may see a warning that some formatting, content, and history that is incompatible with OneNote 2007 will be removed.  Click Ok to continue. OneNote will automatically convert everything in this notebook to 2007 format.  If your notebook is very large, this may take a few minutes. Once the conversion is completed, you can re-open the properties dialog to see the change.  The format is listed as OneNote 2007 format, and you have the option to convert to 2010.  Your 2007 formatted notebook is still fully usable in OneNote 2010, but you may not be able to use some of the newer features in it. Now that your notebook is in 2007 format, you can share it with OneNote 2007 users.  Here’s our notebook, the OneNote 2010 guide, open in OneNote 2007 after the conversion. Conclusion OneNote can be a great collaboration tool, and with this simple trick you can collaborate with those using older versions of OneNote.  Additionally, if you are currently running Office 2010 beta but plan to switch back to Office 2007 when the beta expires, then make sure to do this to any new notebooks you’ve created so you can still use them.   • Using Open MQ as an Oracle CEP Event Source

    I helped an Oracle CEP customer recently who wanted to use Open MQ has an event source for their Oracle CEP application.  In this case, the Oracle CEP application was being used to provide monitoring for an electronic commerce website, however, the steps for configuring Open MQ are entirely independent of the application logic. I thought I would list the configuration steps in a blog post in case they might help others in the future. Note that although the Oracle CEP documentation states that only WebLogic and Tibco JMS are "officially" supported, any JMS implementation that provides a Java client should work with Oracle CEP. The first step is to add an adapter to the application's EPN. This can be done in the usual way, using the Eclipse IDE. The end result is something like the following bit of configuration in the application's Spring application context. Note that the provider attribute value of 'jms-inbound' specifies that the out-of-the-box JMS adapter is being used. <wlevs:adapter id="helloworldAdapter" provider="jms-inbound"> </wlevs:adapter>   Next, configure the inbound adapter so that it can connect to Open MQ in the Oracle CEP configuration file (config.xml). The snippet below provides an example of what this configuration should look like. The exact values specified for jndi-provider-url, jndi-factory, connection-jndi-name, destination-jndi-name elements will depend on your Open MQ configuration.  For example , if the name of your Open MQ topic destination is 'ElectronicCommerceTopic', then you would specify that as the destination-jndi-name.  The name of your Open MQ connection factory goes in the connection-jndi-name element. In my simple example, I also specify in event-type element so that the out-of-the-box JMS adapter will attempt to automatically convert incoming messages to events of type HelloWorldEvent. In a more complex application, one would configure a custom converter on the JMS adapter to convert from messages to events.  The Oracle CEP 11.1.3 documentation describes how to do this.   <jms-adapter> <name>helloworldAdapter</name> <event-type>HelloWorldEvent</event-type> <jndi-provider-url>file:///C:/Temp</jndi-provider-url> <jndi-factory>com.sun.jndi.fscontext.RefFSContextFactory</jndi-factory> <connection-jndi-name>YourJMSConnectionFactoryName</connection-jndi-name> <destination-jndi-name>YourJMSDestinationName</destination-jndi-name> </jms-adapter>   Finally, one needs to package the client-side Open MQ jars so that the classes that they contain are available to the Oracle CEP runtime. The recommended way for doing this in the Oracle CEP 11.1.3 release is to package the classes as a library module or simply place them in the application bundle.  The advantage of deploying the classes as a library module is that they are available to any application that wants to connect to Open MQ. In my case, I packaged the classes in my application bundle. A best practice when you want to include additional jars in your application bundle is to create a 'lib' directory in your Eclipse project and then copy the required jars into that directory.  Then, use the support that Eclipse provides to add the jars to the bundle classpath (which makes the classes part of your application in the same way that regular application classes are), and export all of the classes from your application bundle so that they are available to the Oracle CEP server runtime.  The screenshot below Illustrates how this is done in Eclipse.  The bundle classpath contains two Open MQ jars and all packages in the jars are exported.     Finally, import the javax.jms and javax.naming packages into the application module as these are needed by the Open MQ classes. The screenshot below shows the complete list of package imports for my sample application.       Once you have completed these steps, you should be able to build and deploy your application and begin receiving inbound messages from Open MQ.     With Oracle vs Google trial, it seems that Java is not entirely Open and free (as free software) as I expected. Although there exists completely free/open JVM, it's hard to know what is a copyright infringement with Java, and what is not. So I'd like to know if there is a completely Open and free language with open and free IDE (Eclipse-like) out there, Object Oriented if possible, and able to make window-based applications for the main OSs (Linux, Mac, Windows).

  • How to choose an open source, Asterisk friendly firewall?

    I'm in pain. We are moving to a SIP based VOIP system and for whatever reason, we could not get our hosted Asterisk solution to work with our Sonicwall. Our VOIP provider gave up and is recommending an open source vendor, pfSense. A little background: We have about 30 users in our network. We use a few IPSec VPN connections for remote networks. I would like, but don't need, application layer filtering. We're active internet users, so properly traffic shaping is probably a concern. How can I tell if an open source firewall will handle VOIP setup smoothly with a hosted Asterisk system?
