  • What is the benefit of using ONLY OpenID authentication on a site?

    From my experience with OpenID, I see a number of significant downsides: Adds a Single Point of Failure to the site It is not a failure that can be fixed by the site even if detected. If the OpenID provider is down for three days, what recourse does the site have to allow its users to login and access the information they own? Takes a user to another sites content and every time they logon to your site Even if the OpenID provider does not have an error, the user is re-directed to their site to login. The login page has content and links. So there is a chance a user will actually be drawn away from the site to go down the Internet rabbit hole. Why would I want to send my users to another company's website? [ Note: my provider no longer does this and seems to have fixed this problem (for now).] Adds a non-trivial amount of time to the signup To sign up with the site a new user is forced to read a new standard, chose a provider, and signup. Standards are something that the technical people should agree to in order to make a user experience frictionless. They are not something that should be thrust on the users. It is a Phisher's Dream OpenID is incredibly insecure and stealing the person's ID as they log in is trivially easy. [ taken from David Arno's Answer below ] For all of the downside, the one upside is to allow users to have fewer logins on the Internet. If a site has opt-in for OpenID then users who want that feature can use it. What I would like to understand is: What benefit does a site get for making OpenID mandatory?

  • How to enter text into the "Write something..." box on Facebook and click Submit

    Hello, I am trying to manipulate Facebook pages in various ways, using Javascript browser elements. I'd need to be able to insert some text into the top "Type something..." box that shows on my site's fan page (or alternately, "click into" the field and I can type the text using GUI scripting), then click the "submit" button as if i'd done it by hand. It's tricky since the page is very Ajax heavy and I can't find the names of the elements I need to manipulate, let alone how to manipulate them as they're not using traditional form fields I'm used to. Can anyone help me figure out how to do this with javascript commands, which I'd be calling from Applescript on the Mac? Many thanks in advance. UPDATE Thanks for the comments below. Believe me, I am not trying to do anything spammy or douchy, mainly posting links to products that have gone live on page facebook page, but do it during the business day when people are on rather than at strange hours of the day. I am located in Japan so my sleep period is right when people are using FB. The solution I came up with for clicking the button was got using UI Browser, an outstanding tool if you're trying to script on the Mac.   • In what specific areas has F# proven more applicable than C#?

    Over the last few years F# has evolved into one of Microsoft's fully supported languages employing many ideas incubated in OCaml, ML and Haskell. Over the last several years C# has extended it's general purpose features by introducing more and more functional language features: LINQ (list comprehension), Lamdas, Closures, Anonymous Delegates and more... Given C#'s adoption of these functional features and F#'s taxonomy as an impure functional language (it allows YOU to access framework libraries or change shared state when a function is called if you want to) there is a strong similarity between the two languages although each has it's own polar opposite primary emphasis. I'm interested in any successful models employing these two languages in your production polyglot programs and also the areas within production software (web apps, client apps, server apps) you have written in F# in the past year or so that you would previously have written in C#. EDIT: Altered title with the intent of reducing perceived ambiguity.

  • jQuery UI: Dialog button styling

    Is there an easy way to apply CSS/icons to the modal buttons on a jQuery UI modal dialog box? If I include the HTML to display an icon with the button text, it shows the HTML as text rather than rendering the code. I'm guessing I could write some jQuery to find the button and overwrite the HTML with what I want, but I'm hoping there's an easier more direct way.

  • Finding the most frequent subtrees in a collection of (parse) trees

    I have a collection of trees whose nodes are labelled (but not uniquely). Specifically the trees are from a collection of parsed sentences (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Treebank). I wish to extract the most common subtrees from the collection - performance is not (yet) an issue. I'd be grateful for algorithms (ideally Java) or pointers to tools which do this for treebanks. Note that order of child nodes is important. EDIT @mjv. We are working in a limited domain (chemistry) which has a stylised language so the varirty of the trees is not huge - probably similar to children's readers. Simple tree for "the cat sat on the mat". <sentence> <nounPhrase> <article/> <noun/> </nounPhrase> <verbPhrase> <verb/> <prepositionPhrase> <preposition/> <nounPhrase> <article/> <noun/> </nounPhrase> </prepositionPhrase> </verbPhrase> </sentence> Here the sentence contains two identical part-of-speech subtrees (the actual tokens "cat". "mat" are not important in matching). So the algorithm would need to detect this. Note that not all nounPhrases are identical - "the big black cat" could be: <nounPhrase> <article/> <adjective/> <adjective/> <noun/> </nounPhrase> The length of sentences will be longer - between 15 to 30 nodes. I would expect to get useful results from 1000 trees. If this does not take more than a day or so that's acceptable. Obviously the shorter the tree the more frequent, so nounPhrase will be very common. EDIT If this is to be solved by flattening the tree then I think it would be related to Longest Common Substring, not Longest Common Sequence. But note that I don't necessarily just want the longest - I want a list of all those long enough to be "interesting" (criterion yet to be decided).

  • Invoking web service methods from code-behind

    The application on which I am working has a web service exposing various methods. Most of these methods use WebOperationContext.Current to set headers up to prevent cacheing. This works fine when the service methods are consumed in AJAX via the generated proxy, but when I attempt to do the same thing from code-behind, WebOperationContext.Current is null. Can anyone tell me how to confer appropriate call context on the method invocation?

    Hi there! I've got an XML file that is parsed and written in my application. From within my IDE (Eclipse) I simply address it like this: Reading: private String xmlFile = "file.xml"; and then I build the document: doc = sax.build(xmlFile); Writing is done like this: writer = new FileWriter("file.xml"); Runs great so far, but after bundling my application, the file is no longer accessible. What exactly do I have to do to make it accessible from within an application bundle? I'm absolutely not familiar with the classpath or whatever I need for that, so please go easy on me!   • Grouping DLL's for use in Executable

    Is there a way to group a bunch of DLL's and still use them at run time (not zipped up). Sorry this question sounds terse and stupid, but I'm not sure what more to ask. I'll explain the situation though: We've had two standalone Windows Applications and now one of our Applications has swelled to such ungainly proportions that the other application cannot run outside of the scope of the first app. We want to maintain some of the encapsulation we had while letting the smaller program in on some of the bigger program's features. There is no problem in running the application, other than we don't want to send out all the 20-30 DLL's that the smaller project has.

  • track mouse movements on 800 x 600 and show on 1024 x 768

    i am tracking the mouse movements of a user using javascript and storing it along with the browser resolution. Then i can check the user mouse movement in my browser which is 1024 x 768 resolution. But if the user is using a browser in 800 x 600 then the mouse movements are recorded wrt 800 x 600. And when i see the mouse movements in 1024 x 768 the mouse movements are wrong. So how can i scale from 800 x 600 to 1024x 768?

  • Confirmation box pops up more than once using ajax

    I'm using Ajax to delete records and display an animated message (function display_message) when this record is deleted, but I noticed that the confirmation box pops up depending on the number of records. for example if I have 2 records in my list and I want to delete on of them.The confirmation box pops up twice before deleting and the same thing happen with the message, It appears twice(I'm using a message that fade in and out), and so on(3 records - 3 pops up, etc). I tried a lot to resolve it but I haven't succeed .   • How do you move the pointer up or down multiple lines with Emacs?

    I can move my pointer up and down one line with my arrow key just fine in Emacs, so I'd like to redefine C-n and C-p to move up and down 5 lines at a time. I'm just beginning to learn how to use Emacs, and elisp is very alien to me. I tried using the GNU Emacs lisp reference, but I couldn't find how to bind a keystroke to multiple commands. Here's what I have so far (concentrating on the moving up definition): (global-set-key "\C-p" '(loop for i in '(1 2 3 4 5) do ('previous-line))) But, this brings up an error message when I hit C-p, "Wrong type argument." Any suggestions? Thanks!

  • modalpopupextender.Show() wont fire

    I'm pretty new to developing for the web so bare with me. I have a company page with multiple locations and emails etc at each of these addresses. The idea is to have a single modalpopup to edit each type of data (one for email, one for urls, one for addresses etc). I link the modalpopupextender to a hiddenbutton and then call an edit function from various places where I can populate some hiddenfields and textboxes in the panel before showing it.     Now look at that! I am having trouble with one of the simplest goals: updating a plain TextView with the value of a SeekBar. This is my approach: @Override public void onProgressChanged(SeekBar seekBar, int progress, boolean fromUser) { if (fromUser) { mInfoText.setText(mFunction.getUserFriendlyString(progress)); } } It basically works, but it kind of blocks the whole UI when I'm dragging. (Note: I tried both View.post() and Activity.runOnUiThread()). Am I overlooking something?

  • Is it possible to give a python dict an initial capacity (and is it usefull)

    I am filling a python dict with around 10,000,000 items. My understanding of dict (or hashtables) is that when too much elements get in them, the need to resize, an operation that cost quite some time. Is there a way to say to a python dict that you will be storing at least n items in it, so that it can allocate memory from the start? Or will this optimization not do any good to my running speed? (And no, I have not checked that the slowness of my small script is because of this, I actually wouldn't now how to do that. This is however something I would do in Java, set the initial capacity of the HashSet right)

    What are the best practices if you have a class which accepts some parameters but none of them are allowed to be null? The following is obvious but the exception is a little unspecific: public class SomeClass { public SomeClass(Object one, Object two) { if (one == null || two == null) { throw new IllegalArgumentException("Parameters can't be null"); } //... } } Here the exceptions let you know which parameter is null, but the constructor is now pretty ugly: public class SomeClass { public SomeClass(Object one, Object two) { if (one == null) { throw new IllegalArgumentException("one can't be null"); } if (two == null) { throw new IllegalArgumentException("two can't be null"); } //... } Here the constructor is neater, but now the constructor code isn't really in the constructor: public class SomeClass { public SomeClass(Object one, Object two) { setOne(one); setTwo(two); } public void setOne(Object one) { if (one == null) { throw new IllegalArgumentException("one can't be null"); } //... } public void setTwo(Object two) { if (two == null) { throw new IllegalArgumentException("two can't be null"); } //... } } Which of these styles is best?   • Reading Values Returned by SQLDataSource Before Binding to FormView

    I have a FormView that shows posts by users. I'd like to add Edit and Delete commands to the post to let the original author edit or delete their post. I'd like these commands to be available to only the author. The FormView is populated by a SqlDataSource that uses a stored procedure. I was thinking I would set the Edit and Delete hyperlink to Visible=False, then compare the currently signed in user guid to the guid of the post's author, and make the hyperlinks visible if the two guids are the same. I've tried using the Selected event of the SqlDataSource to capture the guid (which is returned by the stored procedure) however I can't find way to get the values returned by this datasource. How do I access the values returned by a SqlDataSource before they get databound?
