• Is there a way to tag MP3 the way you can do with Photos in Live Photo Gallery or Picazza?

  I really do love the way you can tag pictures in Windows Live Photo Gallery. I find it incredibly useful to be able to tag the same picture with the tag "Cancun" and have it been automatically included when I look for the tag "Beach", "Trips" and "Fun Pic", since its a child tag of the former and also has a tag for the later. I also like that I can look for rating in the pics. On the other side, tagging MP3 has always been a pain in the ass, because I just find it to hard to classify music! Is it pop? techno? techno-pop? rock? indie-rock? indie-post-classic-pop-techno? I hate how ID3 just have one tag for genre, so I've tried tricks like putting all the genres I think it fits into, and then having lists in Winamp (which I dont use anymore) that filter out words in the ID3 tags (ie, Tag: Genre, Contains: Rock = rock list). But then, what about moods? I want to be able to tag my songs in genres and in moods, you know, happy, concentrate/work, party, romantic (wink wink), etc. Is there any way to do this, preferably in a way in which tags could carry on to other music players? • Mod disk_cache permanent caching images and disabling reacurring header updates

  I am trying to get mod disk_cache to permantly cache images retrieved from an image server on the webserver using ProxyPass. While the image is being retrieved correctly from the server and is served from the cache on further requests, then I am still having the webserver call the image server and causing the cached header to be updated. Because of load concerns then I need to never call the image server on a specific url again after it has been cached once, or extend the refresh time for as long as possible. • I need scanning software to use with my scanner.

  So, I got this (HP F4280) printer/scanner about a year ago, and I'm really happy with it. The only thing is that I never really liked the HP scanning software that came with it. A few months ago I reformatted and reinstalled windows 7. Then, once I plugged in the printer, I noticed that windows recognized it automatically, and offered to install all the drivers by itself. So instead of manually installing the driver that came in the CD, I simply let windows automatically install it from its servers, and so far it's great. Instead of HP's scanning software (that really wasn't pleasing me), I got a very simplified interface that is more than enough for my ocasional scanning habits. Until today. Today I had to scan a bunch of old pictures for my father. And that simple interface felt like it was lacking quite a few features to make this repetitive task a little easier. And that's why I'm now looking for a good software to use for scanning. By "good" I mean anything well thought out, and specially anything that will make my life easier when repetitive-scanning. It doesn't need to have professional tweaking options, but having them is not a problem either. You guys got anything?

• Windows 8.1 - Won't boot (0xc000000f), bcdedit fails

  I’m pretty much stuck at this point. So, backstory: Windows was installed on one of the SSDs currently in my tower. I bought a new SSD to install Windows (8.1 64 bit) on. Windows installation went fine, booted up, and formatted the old SSD from within Windows (this seems to have been a mistake, but I didn’t realize that at the time). Despite formatting the old SSD, whenever I tried to boot I was told that there were 2 Windows installations. Apparently, when I formatted the old drive, not all of the partitions were removed. So, I booted up with the repair utility, went into cmd, and deleted the non-primary partitions on the old SSD (there were 2 – think they were system and recovery, although I’m forgetting now). Reboot – computer won’t boot. Getting the 0xc000000f “The boot selection failed because a required device is inaccessible” error. Troubleshooting so far: Automatic repair doesn’t fix anything (I’ve never had luck with it though) If I go to install a new version of Windows, the drives and partitions are all there. The SSD is functioning, I at least know that. I’ve essentially gone through this guide: https://neosmart.net/wiki/recovering-windows-bootloader/ Unfortunately, I’m not getting anywhere. • Cannot access drive in Windows 7 after scandisk lockup, but can in safe mode....

  I ran scandisk on my external USB drive due to the inability to delete a few files. Windows asked me if I wanted to unmount the drive before the scan, warning me that it would be unusable until the scan was finished, and I said yes. During the scan, my machine locked up, and I was forced to reboot the machine. When it came up, I was unable to access the drive, getting an error that "L:is not accessible, access is denied". Comupter Management sees the drive, and has the proper amount of disk space filled. I booted into safe mode, and can access the drive with no problems, and I noticed that in explorer, all the folders have locks on them. I booted back into windows, but still could not access the drive, getting the same error as above. Hovever, if I right click on the drive, select properties, and go to Customize, in the folder pictures ares, I select Choose File, and a window open up, that shows the root of the directory, with all the folder able to be accessed, but again, the icon is the folder icon with a lock on it. I can even copy files from the drive to another. So, the files are not gone, windows can obviously access the drive no matter what it thinks, so there has to be a problem with the flag windows put on the drive when it ran the original scan that failed. I was able to run a scan both in safe mode with no problems, and in windows. In windows, I received the cannot access error the first time I run scan disk on it, but if I try again, it works fine. Any ideas on how to clear the flag that windows set, so I can access the drive normally again?

  I have many pictures in a document and I reference them very often in text. I don't want to lose the order so I am using Insert - Cross-reference. This opens the cross-reference dialog where I can set Reference type to Picture. For "Insert reference to", there are 5 choices: - Entire caption - List item - Only label and number - Only caption text - Page number, Above/below What I need is a reference that would be inserted like this: [4], and not like this: [Picture 4]; None of these options enable me to do it. Is there any way to make Word 2007 insert a reference to only Caption Number? Note: The document is written in Croatian language which has 7 declension cases, so using "Picture 4" would not be valid in all cases. Actually caption label Picture is set to croatian word "Slika" and when I need to say say "in the picture" I can't because it would be "na Slici 5." and not "na Slika 5." (like Word would make me do). That's why I need to reference only the caption number. Is that possible in Word 2007?

• Melting plastic around DC-in jack in laptop

  I recently noticed that the plastic around the DC-in jack of my laptop was warped (melted) a little bit. Since I noticed, I have done some experiments, and saw that the metal tip of the charger heats up very much when I am gaming, or performing CPU-intensive work (it's so hot that i can't hold it between my fingers). When I am using Windows normally (web browsing, music, video), the tip is not hot. I tried using another charger from a compatible laptop, but its metal tip overheated as well, so the problem is not caused by the charger. I have been using this laptop for gaming for 1.5 years and I never had this problem. When gaming I always use a laptop cooler. Dust is not the problem (i cleaned out the dust), and the CPU and GPU temperatures are not higher than when I got the laptop. The only thing that is excessively hot is the charger tip. Because I bought my laptop from the USA, sending it to warranty and back would cost more than the laptop's value, so I need to fix it myself. I have googled around, and I saw that the problem might be the DC-in jack that is located on the motherboard of the laptop. I plan to take the laptop apart and see if it has become loose, and soldering it in place if it has. My questions for you are: Did anyone deal with this problem in the past? Did anyone manage to fix it? Is the DC-in jack the culprit in this case? Or is it possible for the problem to be caused by another part on the motherboard? Is there any way I can check the DC-in jack with a multimeter? What should I measure (resistance, etc)? EDIT: My laptop is a Sager NP5135 (aka Clevo B5130M). • How do I use a Minitel terminal as a linux dumb terminal

  I recently purchased a US version of the Alcatel Minitel terminal. I think it's a 1B version. Pictures of it here: I tried connecting a null modem to the 25 pin port on the back and plugging it into a linux box running agetty but I couldn't get it to show any signs of being connected. I used Google Translate to translate this document into English: http://mirabellug.org/wikini/upload/Documentations_minitel.pdf As far as I can tell, you take it out of videotex mode by typing Fcnt-T A, then turn off local echo with Fcnt-T E, then set it to 4800 baud with Fcnt-P 4. I presume Fcnt refers to the "CTRL" key on my terminal. But I think I'm doing something wrong, because it doesn't look like it's recognising the keystrokes, because "Fcnt-T A" just prints the letter A to the screen, which is not what you'd expect a function key combo to do. Has anyone used these minitel terminals as a linux terminal, and if so, please can you share how to configure the minitel to run as a terminal ? Is the 25 pin plug even the correct port to use ? I read something online that indicated you're supposed to use the 5 pin DIN plug instead, is that right ? If so, what's the 25 pin plug for ? If I am supposed to use the DIN plug, does anyone know the pinouts so I can make a cable ?

• How can I wipe my iPod classic and fix any bad sectors on the hard drive without killing it?

  My iPod never finishes syncing and only syncs audio, not pictures or video - any ideas as to how I can fix it? My iPod classic 160GB worked well for a couple of years. I used to sync a lot of photos at full resolution to it, but this recently stopped working after I moved to Windows 7. iTunes is on latest version - 9.1.1.12 iPod software is up to date - 1.1.2 Windows 7 is fully up to date and patched The symptoms are that the iPod will start to sync, all audio (music and podcasts will sync successfully) but the syncing will then just appear to continue - itunes message: Syncing iPod. Do not Disconnect. This sync never completes - I have left it trying for days. I have tried resetting the iPod using the Restore button, whereupon it restarts sync from default options and again will sync audio, but nothing else. I suspect that something has gone wrong on the hard-drive - either a bad sector or some corrupt data. Is there a process I can go through to fix this? E.g. SpinRite or a format? If so how do I go about formatting an iPod and will it be recognised as an iPod after format and work as normal? Any advice on what to try next much appreciated? Update I have eliminated problems with the files, PC or iTunes as they sync fine to other iPods. I have also eliminated the cable by trying different cables which work with other iPods. What I'd really like to know is if there is any way to more fundamentally wipe the iPod safely, attempt to repair any bad sectors on the hard drive and then start from scratch. Anyone ever managed this?

• Excel Help: Data Input Help

  Everyday I download data from a site that will have rows each filled with individual data for clients. I'm able to input the data into excel as a whole but after that I'm having trouble figuring out how to put it into a chart. For example Web visits time. So say Client 1 stayed for 5 min increasing his total time on the site to 20 min and Client 2 stayed for 0 min keeping his time of 10 min and they were both registered on new years eve, and R1's last login was today and R2's was yesterday. (R for some reason repersents Client, no idea why...). Client 3 hasn't been on since he registered keeping his total at 4 min So my data would look something like this for Today (20110104) R1,20101231,20110104,20 R2,20101231,20110103,10 R3,20101231,20101231,4 And this for the day before (201101030), R1,20101231,20110102,15 R2,20101231,20110103,10 R3,20101231,20101231,4 I get about 200+ client rows each day where even the names of the Client list are changing. Is it possible to import the data each day and fill it in a excel sheet where the Client number is off on the left hand side in a table, and the amount of time (Whole Number ex. 4) each day it spends on the site extend to the right under it's specific date see Picture? • Loopback connection via PHP's getimage size crashes server (Magento's CMS)

  We were able to trace down a problem that is crashing our NGINX server running Magento until the following point: Background info: Magento Backend has a CMS function with a WYSIWYG editor. This editor loads some pictures via a controller in magento (cms/directive). After waiting for around 10 minutes, the NGINX server starts answering requests again. I tried to reproduce the error with a simple test script that only calls getimagesize() with the given URL - but this not crash. It simple leads to an exception saying that the URL could not be loaded (which is fine as the URL is wrong)

• How to discover true identity of hard disk?

  I have 2 fake external hard drives that claim to have a storage capacity of 2TB. I pulled the enclosure apart and the hard drives seems to be refurbished ones with their labels replaced as Barracuda LP 2000 GB labels (the serial numbers on both labels are the same). Interestingly, one of the drives have 160G written on it with pencil. However, the counterfeiters seem to have done something to the firmware, because CrystalDiskInfo reports them as 2TB ST2000DL003 drives. I then delete the 1.81 TB partition in Windows disk management and tried to create a new one and format it. Once I get to this point, the drives would make some noise that is common to dying drives. I am not interested in using these drives for production, but I am interested in finding the true identity (manufacturer/serial number/model number, etc) and restoring it to their factory defaults with the right capacity. Can this be done without any special equipment? This would be an interesting learning exercise. Some pictures of the drives in question: Here are the screens from CrystalDiskInfo: Note the serial numbers are the same (these are 2 different drives!). How is this done? Did they have to tamper with the controller board? I would assume that changing the firmware doesn't change the serial number at all.

• MicroSD card isn't detected by computer, apparently usable only with phone

  I have a 4GB MicroSD card that apparently only works (in the sense that the device detects and can read and write from and to the card) with my old Nokia XpressMusic 5800 phone. I have taken pictures and recorded voice notes that were saved on the card. These are accessible after the card has been removed, which tells me that the problem isn't with the card. The card could also not be locked to the phone as it would at least be detected by a computer and it would be able to write raw data to it with dd, such as /dev/zero. Also, the card is not the Nokia card that came with the phone and I have done nothing that would have caused it to be locked. (I could not find anything on Nokia's website that helps, but then again... my search was not THAT thorough.) The card works on no other device that I have tried so far. I have tried it in my Canon camera (through an adapter), but it refuses to even boot with the card inserted. My card reader (via USB cable and hub) is detected as /dev/sdx with or without the card inserted. When trying to access the card I get an "No medium found". dmesg does not report any change at all when inserting and removing the card. I would obviously like to use my card on other devices - the phone is quite old - and even a likely explanation would help. Thankyou in advance! EDIT 1: I can use the card by connecting the phone to my computer, but this is impractical and would not allow me to use the card in any other device. EDIT 2: The data on the card is not important to me at all.

• Windows 8 folder to folder sync software

  I'm looking for direct folder to folder synchronization in Windows 8. I was previously using Live Mesh to accomplish this, but now it looks like that is no longer an option. Note that I'm talking about direct folder to folder sync between different computers, not syncing to the cloud. I'm aware of products like Google Drive, SkyDrive, Dropbox, etc. The problem with them is the space limitation. Basically, I was syncing important files before between my desktop and all of my laptops. One folder for example is My Pictures. This folder has almost 40 gigs of files, which is why the options listed above are not going to work for me. Just need direct syncing, nothing stored on the cloud. I was told by a Microsoft employee that SkyDrive would be replacing Mesh and would provide all the same functionality. So far this looks to be completely false, since the ability to remote desktop is gone along with folder to folder sync. Unless I'm just missing something?

• Should I partition a 1TB Hard Disk whose primary use is media storage?

  I am going to get a 1TB hard disk. I will be storing 1080p or 720p movies, high-bitrate music and pictures in it. I use my PC 90% of the time only to play/listen/see those. I am running out of space in my current HD so I am getting another one. My specs are 2.7GHz Dual Core, 512MB GeForce 9400GT, 2GB DDR2 RAM and all the proper matroska codecs/players. I guess that is enough to play 1080p movies withough a glitch, given an ideal hard disk. I've read about proper partitioning giving performance improvement etc.. I don't want my hard disk to be the bottleneck. Can someone tell me whether I should partition my 1TB hard disk into many drives? If I should, what is the ideal size of each partition? Smooth playing of movies is very important to me. Once I start filling up the disk, there is no turning back. So I want to get it right before I start. Thanks.

• How can I display additional boot and shutdown information on the Windows 7 welcome screen?

  There is a small tweak, I believe it is a registry key, that allows to display additional information on the Welcome and Shutting down screens of Windows 7 (and most likely Vista, too). I have activated this tweak on one of my systems; unfortunately I forgot how I did it, and I can't seem to find the website that originally gave me that information. Usually, the Windows 7 welcome screen will just display "Welcome" when logging in. With the tweak activated, my Welcome screen gives status information such as "Loading user settings" or "Preparing desktop". When shutting down, the default screen simply says "Shutting down". With the tweak activated, it gives additional status information such as "Stopping Windows services". This appears the same way that Windows gives information when updates are installed or configured during the startup or shutdown procedure, and I find them quite helpful in getting a feel for what task takes how long during that process. The only setting I was able to find is the Boot log checkbox on the Boot tab of the msconfig application. However, this results in Windows displaying console logs of drivers it is loading, etc., instead of the animated Windows title. This is NOT the setting I am looking for. The "additional boot information" setting that I have activated on this system still displays the regular animated Windows logo, and only replaces the strings displayed on the blue Welcome and Shutdown screens. Could someone direct me to the registry key (or whatever setting) that is used to get this behaviour? • How can I write directly to my Zune HD hard drive?

  When syncing photos to the Zune HD it resizes them down to a much lower resolution which means I cannot load a high res picture on it (comic book) and zoom in to read it. This defeats the whole purpose of having a zoom feature. There is a registry hack you can make to get the Zune to display under My Computer. Then if you killed the zune process while it's syncing you'd be able to access it like a hard drive and copy files to it. It seems like the more recent firmware and/or Zune software version now prevents this. How can I treat it like an HDD and copy files to it? I simply want to take my original pictures folder and copy it over the low resolution versions the Zune software resized it to. An alternative option would be to remove the hard drive from it and see if I can connect it to a computer directly, but I just got this and don't want to disassemble it yet. Note to Microsoft: Why do you allow me to set the encoding quality of music, but not photos?

• What could cause random files being downloaded without permission?

  I have been having issues lately with a certain directory. It seems someone is placing files into it, or something of that sort, and any attempt to delete them is successful, HOWEVER they reappear over time (maybe not the exact same ones, but random files). I will provide you the information I can and several pictures of my problem: sandbox.mys4l.com/visual/files/b1.jpg Files like this have been appearing in my /visual/ folder, and I have no clue where they are coming from. sandbox.mys4l.com/visual/files/b2.jpg This is what is inside on of those weird files, it appears to be nothing problematic. sandbox.mys4l.com/visual/files/b4.jpg As you can see, in the time it took me to take the first picture, more odd files showed up. These log files are also being uploaded to this directory, and I know I didn't put them there. sandbox.mys4l.com/visual/files/b7.jpg This inside one of these mysterious .log files, I'm not sure what it's all about. These files only appear to be going into this specific area, and I'm not sure of their origin, only that they will not go away. I have done a full system scan at least twice with an up-to-date virus scan, and have looked for an unknown script which may be writing them there. Nothing has come up, so I come to you guys as I hear this is the best place to find answers. Hope this problem has a solution!

• Monitor is flashing through camera but not in the naked eye

  Two monitors: Samsung T23C350 - Samsung 2243NW Lets call the first A and the other B. A is a LED monitor with a 2ms response time (in specs) with a native resolution of 1920*1080@60Hz B is an older not-led one with 5ms response in specs with a resolution of 1680*1050@60Hz In the attached images and video you'll see that A (on the LEFT) is flickering but this is not visible to the naked eye. I took some pictures and videos with a camera and a mobile phone. This is also happening to all digital camcorders I've tested. A has a setting response time with values normal, fast, fastest. No matter the setting, the effect is the same. A on the left and B on the right. You can see the flickering, although both are @60Hz A video where you can see both monitors. A is always the left monitor. Another video where you can see what my digital camera sees. Another thing is that I managed to get a picture where the left monitor is completely black whilst the right one is displaying fine. This proves that the monitor is continuously flashing. My question is: Is this normal behavior and what is causing it? Am I affected by this fast flickering? I am using this as my primary monitor and as a programmer I have to keep my eyes on it for hours.

• Keeping Xv Overlay configuration throughout an X session.

  After upgrading my Linux system from Ubuntu 9.04 to Ubuntu 10.10, I suceeded correcting most problems (all related to Intel 82865G Integrated Graphics Adapter support and compiz is still not working but that's another matter) but for one I only have a partial solution. Whenever I play a video the colors are much too saturated. This is really a problem for tones of skins that appears reddish (everyone seems to be coming back from a ski vacation with deep sun burns). As this effect only occurs with videos, not with pictures, I finally figured out it was related to Video Overlays configuration and I can correct it typing: xvattr -a XV_SATURATION -v 120 This change the default saturation value, which is 500 and much too high in my case, at eye sight the correct value seems to be between 100 and 150. Now my problem is that I have to type the above command each time I run a video. If I type it before running the video it has no effect, if I close the video and open a new one, I have to type it again, etc. I tried to put it in Xsession and (logically) it has no effect either. How could I do to get the correct setting whenever I run a video without typing the above command every time ?

• Managing arbitrary user permissions under PureFTPd

  I need to provide an FTP service that needs to be web-managed in the simplest way possible. My customer wants to create folders and users, and give them read only or read/write access arbitrarily. For example: The folder 'Documents' should be read only for several users, writable for internal users, and invisible for the rest. The folder 'Pictures' should be read only for journalists, writable for associates, and invisible for the rest. The folder 'Media' should be read only, writable or invisible for arbitrary users specified on the admin. There could be a large number of users and folders. I can't find a good way to accomplish that. I thought that I could give each user a home folder and put symlinks for the folders he has read access to, and make the user part of the folder's group when he has write access too, but now I think that this wouldn't work, because with PureFTPd (or ProFTPd) I can only specify the virtual user's mapping to a system user, and only one GUID for each virtual user. My approach requires that I could specify several GUIDs for each user (one by each folder he has write access to). I need to start programming this admin and I still don't know wich approach would work, if any. ¿Any ideas?

• adding a custom user folder on Ubuntu

  Question: How do you add a custom folder to the collection of user folders that come with Ubuntu? Info: I just loaded my netbook with Ubuntu Desktop 10.04LTS (Desktop because it is an aspire one and the Apocalypse seems to follow when ever i try to install netbook remix onto it). It comes with standard folders like Documents, Music, Pictures, Downloads(though this one doesn't appear until you actually download something), Videos, etc etc. These are handly little folders because they have little symbols on them and are nicely located in my file browser. it is basically like the folder lay out the windows had in vista. I do a lot of little programing on this computer so i have a folder in which i keep all these single kb code files. Obviously named "Code" that I keep in my home folder. But I would really like to it over listed next to my other user folders. In summary, how do you add a folder to the listing on the file browser. And, if possible, how do you give it an icon? (I understand fully that I will probably have to make said Icon) those two things are what I'm seeking to do. ~n P.s. please correct me if I'm using the wrong name. I just guessed and called them "User Folders" because they were folders the user uses. made sense. but if they have another name like "libraries" please say so. Thanks

• How can I wipe my iPod classic and fix any bad sectors on the hard drive without killing it?

  My iPod never finishes syncing and only syncs audio, not pictures or video. Any ideas as to how I can fix it? My iPod classic 160GB worked well for a couple of years. I used to sync a lot of photos at full resolution to it, but this recently stopped working after I moved to Windows 7. iTunes is on latest version - 9.1.1.12 iPod software is up to date - 1.1.2 Windows 7 is fully up to date and patched The symptoms are that the iPod will start to sync, all audio (music and podcasts will sync successfully) but the syncing will then just appear to continue - itunes message: Syncing iPod. Do not Disconnect. This sync never completes - I have left it trying for days. I have tried resetting the iPod using the Restore button, whereupon it restarts sync from default options and again will sync audio, but nothing else. I suspect that something has gone wrong on the hard-drive - either a bad sector or some corrupt data. Is there a process I can go through to fix this? E.g. SpinRite or a format? If so how do I go about formatting an iPod and will it be recognised as an iPod after format and work as normal? Any advice on what to try next much appreciated? Update I have eliminated problems with the files, PC or iTunes as they sync fine to other iPods. I have also eliminated the cable by trying different cables which work with other iPods. What I'd really like to know is if there is any way to more fundamentally wipe the iPod safely, attempt to repair any bad sectors on the hard drive and then start from scratch. Anyone ever managed this?
