  My physical PC is running 2 VMs on virtualbox. Both of the VM's are linux 64 bit. Don’t forget to give it a look. I agree with Mike because after I looked into the /etc/hosts files, it has just default localhost stuff in it. How should I reconfigure the hosts file?

• How do I reset the time on my computer, without turning it on?

  Alright, so today, I did something very stupid: Do an experement on my computer without backing it up. So I saw that the calander in windows could only go up to 12/31/2999 (or something like that). I was wondering if I set the time to 11:59:59 PM, if it would crash my computer, thinking that if I did I could just restart it from the recovery disc or something. Well, I was right: It did crash it. However, I can't turn my computer on AT ALL. When I try to, it plays a 1-2 second beep, 1 second silence, repeated a total of 3 times. My manufacturer is Dell. I'm sending this from my phone, I appolgise for all typos. My last backup was from a few months ago, that won't work.

• SAN typical MTBF

  We're using a SAN on a project at work, and there's a bit of debate around the fact that's technically it's a Single Point of Failure. No one seems to have any hard data. The SAN in question is a single physical box, but with internal redundant components (sorry - not sure3 what level of RAID it has, but I can find out). What's the tyopical MTBF for a SAN? The PM has it down on the projects risk register as "Quite Common' - I've never heard of a SAN going down, but I don't jhave any stats to show how likely it really is. Does anyone have any helpful info?

• Active Directory Password Policy Problem

  To Clarify: my question is why isn't my password policy applying to people in the domain. Hey guys, having trouble with our password policy in Active Directory. Sometimes it just helps me to type out what I’m seeing It appears to not be applying properly across the board. I am new to this environment and AD in general but I think I have a general grasp of what should be going on. It’s a pretty simple AD setup without too many Group Policies being applied. It looks something like this DOMAIN Default Domain Policy (link enabled) Password Policy (link enabled and enforce) Personal OU Force Password Change (completely empty nothing in this GPO) IT OU Lockout Policy (link enabled and enforced) CS OU Lockout Policy Accouting OU Lockout Policy The password policy and default domain policy both define the same things under Computer ConfigWindows seetings sec settings Account Policies / Password Policy Enforce password History : 24 passwords remembered Maximum Password age : 180 days Min password age: 14 days Minimum Password Length: 6 characters Password must meet complexity requirements: Enabled Store Passwords using reversible encryption: Disabled Account Policies / Account Lockout Policy Account Lockout Duration 10080 Minutes Account Lockout Threshold: 5 invalid login attempts Reset Account Lockout Counter after : 30 minutes IT lockout This just sets the screen saver settings to lock computers when the user is Idle. After running Group Policy modeling it seems like the password policy and default domain policy is getting applied to everyone. • Re-deploy Reports from SCOM 2007 R2 Management Packs

  I've migrated Reporting Services on a SCOM 2007 R2 install, and noticed that the reports have not being copied. I can create a new report, but the ones I've had because of the management packs are gone. I've tried re-applying the Management Packs however it doesn't re-deploy them and when I try to access for example: Monitoring - Microsoft Windows Print Server - Microsoft Windows Server 2000 and 2003 Print Services - State View - select any item and click Alerts on the right menu. • Can't start my Windows XP Virtual Machine: Insufficient Disk Space

  Okay, I currently have a server with two virtual machines installed on it, a CentOS5.4 and a Windows XP. I was remote desktopping the Windows XP chatting on IRC, and all of a sudden I lost connection. I checked with my HyperVisor and tried to restart it, and it won't start at all. It's giving me this error: Message from server0297.serverpool.gnet.ba: Failed to extend swap file (fileHandle 16414) from 0 KB to 524288 KB: No space left on device. Could not power on VM : No space left on device. Failed to power on VM info 4/17/2010 9:49:20 PM root Basically I bought the set up from a host, he installed the HyperVisor and the VirtualMachines, and honestly I don't really know what I'm doing. I've looked at some of the settings, and I can't figure it out. If you need any additional information, I'll try to provide it. The CentOS5.4 is still starting and working flawlessly, if that's relevant.

• How quickly do I need to complete the installation of Windows updates once they're available?

  I know that Microsoft publishes most updates on the second Tuesday of each month. While I understand that it is important to install security updates as soon as possible, do I place my computer at a significant risk if I wait more than a few hours after the updates are available to install the updates and restart the computer to complete installation? I'm asking because 1) I can't always restart the computer immediately after the system prompts me to do so; and 2) the download process sometimes has to be manually started late in the day when I remember, much later than when they're released at 01:00 PM EST/EDT, because Windows Update only seems to check automatically once per day and does so as soon as I connect to the Internet. Ideally, answers should be detailed and objective, with citations to references as appropriate.

Nevertheless, I also applied the MaxCacheTTL registry fix as described and restarted DNS and the whole server as well but the problem persists. In this case, I didn't see any packets going out from my DNS server even though bogus. was not in the cache (the debug log was already running and this is the first time I queried this server for bogus. or any TLD). It just returned SERVFAIL without consulting any other DNS server, as in the Microsoft KB article linked above.

  Hiya, I'm trying to find an integrated PM solution which will give my business all of the following: Timesheeting so we can track time spent on tasks Holiday planner (integrated with timesheet and project management Project management tool, integrating the above, with milestones, gantt chart, dependancies etc. Forecasting ability (nice to have, but not a requirement) Reporting capability - especially time spent on projects, costs etc. Now yeah, that's quite a lot of functionality, I appreciate that! But currently we've got 3 systems, none of which really talk to each other and it's a right headache. So far we've looked at: OpenWorkbench - not enough features Basecamp - not enough features and too reliant on online MS Project - too expensive? Can anyone throw some other hats into the ring which maybe I've not heard about? Really interested to hear how other people have approached this, it's not an unusual business requirement! Thanks!

• Windows 7 PC crashes after being locked a few minutes

  I have a problem with an Optiplex 755 PC running (32-bit) Windows 7 Professional. I just installed the operating system last week, and ever since, it seems to crash when I lock the screen. It doesn't happen immediately; it's usually after I walk away, so a few minutes (but I'm not sure exactly how many). I have this non-specific error in the Event log. I've run a chkdsk, thinking it might be hard drive-related, but that didn't help. Once it started, it runs smoothly, I also verified its status by running some internal HDD tests by Hard Disk Senitel software..It shows no bad sector , no virus, no damage , normal temperature ... it suggests every thing is OK except its health... Now my question is that then what is the wrong with it..? It may be wrong with plates (dusty) or the read/write heads...then can I go for repair it or replace it...? My system now reminds me every half an hour to resolve this problem since last 10 days... Help me.

  We're using Nagios to monitor some of our web sites. We have a script that uses the older plugin that we are trying to switch to using webinject.pl from cpan. When the script runs, it generates this error: LWP::Protocol::https::Socket: SSL connect attempt failed with unknown error error:1407741A:SSL routines:SSL23_GET_SERVER_HELLO:tlsv1 alert decode error at /usr/local/share/perl5/LWP/Protocol/http.pm line 51. It appears the web site does not support TLSv1 for https. If it matters, the site is a Cisco WebVPN. I've pointed the same script at a different site that does support TLSv1 and it seems to work fine. My web search is coming up empty. • Apache service hung and incoming requests not accepted

  Hi, My production server is running Apache v2.2.4 with mod_mono v1.2.4 on CentOS release 5.2 (Final). Suddenly, Apache service hung during normal usage time (approx. 1 pm EDT). Traffic is not too high at this time. This is the first time we're noticing this kind of behaviour in our server. I noticed from access log that even subsequent requests are also not received, even though there were incoming requests. I then manually tried to invoke my application call from web browser, it never returned successfully but it was still loading. I found no unusual behaviour/activity in: 1) Apache access_log and error_log 2) No kernel level errors found in /var/log/messages I've no other option but ended up restarting Apache service. Any idea on what would cause Apache to hang and thereby not allowing subsequent incoming requests? How do I debug/diagnose when this happens next time? Experts advice/recommendation on this are highly appreciated.

• iChat can't authenticate to Lion Server 10.7.2 [migrated]

  I've enabled iChat and iCal Server through our local 10.7.2 Server which has DNS set up correctly. I can add the server account via a client's System Preferences (under other - Mac OS X server) and it authenticates with my shortname correctly. However, when I load iChat, I get this error message: Where the account is [email protected]. The password and username is correct. Console throws this error: 22/11/11 3:03:31.135 PM imagent: [Warning] XMPPConnection: Error: Error Domain=XMPPErrorDomain Code=105 "The operation couldn?t be completed. (XMPPErrorDomain error 105.)" UserInfo=0x7f81bbe2a3e0 {XMPPErrorText=service requested for unknown domain} DNS is set up correctly (it's working for Profile Management, Software Update Server and Web Services) but I can't get iChat to work correctly. How can I get clients to authenticate? FYI: It's probably worth noting that I get the exact same error messages when I use [email protected] instead of [email protected]. • Ubuntu, No wireless networks found after correctly installed madwifi

  Hi, I just installed madwifi on my MSI laptop with an Atheros AR5001 wifi card & Lucid. As far as I can see and according to System - Administration - Hardware drivers the install was successful and the card + driver is up and running. However, I don't see any wireless network (my windows PC can see about 5 wireless networks). I tried it with the network manager applet as well as with wicd. If I try to connect to "Hidden Wireless Network" via nm-applet, it will start to connect for a while but is unable too (although I supply it with the correct WEP settings & key) So, I'm unable to use my wireless network. What am i doing wrong? • Perl module error on solaris-10

  I have installed perl and pm_dbdmysql perl module on solaris-10. I have a perl script which makes the mysql DB connection to a diff server and runs some queries and returns the results.   I am getting the following Error messages and do not know how to fix it. Event Type: Error Event Source: MSExchangeTransport Event Category: (8) Event ID: 3017 Date: 4/29/2010 Time: 1:21:12 PM User: N/A Computer: NETSRV Description: A non-delivery report with a status code of 5.3.5 was generated for recipient rfc822;[email protected] (Message-ID <19104335.51321272561635734.JavaMail.SYSTEM@PARROT). Causes: A looping condition was detected. (The server is configured to route mail back to itself). If you have multiple SMTP Virtual Servers configured on your Exchange server, make sure they are defined by a unique incoming port and that the outgoing SMTP port configuration is valid to avoid looping between local virtual servers. • SBS 08 Backup fail

  Hi, I'm trying to backup my SBS 08 (only C:) with Windows Server Backup. It fails a few minutes after it started : Backup started at '08/12/2009 1:27:23 PM' failed as Volume Shadow copy operation failed for backup volumes with following error code '2155348022'. Please rerun backup once issue is resolved. In the EventViewer i have lots of error : VSS : 12289 SQLVDI : 1 MSSQL$MICROSOFT##SSEE : 18210 MSSQL$MICROSOFT##SSEE : 3041 SQLWRITER : 24583 All VSS ans SQL services are started. I have WSUS 3.0, Exchange 07. I don't have any third party backup software running at the same time. Thanks for your help !

  Can somebody help me in installing bugzilla (list out exact steps if possible) on Windows Server 2008 with IIS 7.0 , Mysql 5.1 & existing email server(already configured)? I followed installation steps from many posts & also your site , everything goes right but when I start to creating accounts by sending email in bugzilla web panel, I get error:- “There was an error sending mail from 'bugzilla-daemon@' to '[email protected]':Can't call method "address" on an undefined value at C:/Program Files (x86)/Bugzilla/perl/perl/site/lib/Email/Send/SMTP.pm line 25.” I also tried installing through Windows installer, but same issues. Please any help would be appreciated. Expecting quick response.

• Force Colloquy not to use built-in Growl notifications

  Whenever Colloquy needs to pop up a notification (for example, when you are PM'd), it uses its built-in Growl notifications, which really annoy me because they stay on the screen until they are clicked (at least NOTICE's do anyways). I'd like to make Colloquy use the Growl that I have installed on my Mac, not its built-in Growl notifications. That way, I could change its preferences from the Growl .prefpane and it would match the look of all my other notifications. I seem to remember this being possible (maybe in a bug report or something), but I can't remember how. Thanks!

• Run Rails 3 app on a Rails 2 server/machine?

  I'm trying to run a Rail 3 (3.0.10) app on a shared joyent smartmachine server (I don't have root access) which has Rails 2 (2.3.11) installed , and I'm not sure what to do after I freeze my Rails 3 app with bundle install --deployment. It seems like with the Rails 3 and bundler gems not being installed on the server locally, my app isn't even recognizing the local version of Rails I have frozen with my app. Has anyone gotten this to work, or have any advice? The server runs Apache, and I think I can get lighttpd installed too - but I'd rather stay with Apache if I can. Also, if it matters, Passenger is not an installed gem either...and I'm not sure I can freeze that with my app. Update 11/30/2011 12:30 PM EST Bundler is not installed on this server, either. Not sure if having that would enable the new Rails 3 "freeze" (bundle --deployment) to work or not...

• How to lock screen in linux before hibernating?

  So when i hibernate my laptop the screen doesn't lock automatically. To solve this i've changed /etc/acpi/powerbtn.sh to contain: su - myUsername -c "gnome-screensaver-command -l" sudo pm-hibernate exit 0 When running this file from a command line it works as intended (ie, lock the screen and then hibernate). Unfortunately, when pressing the power button, it still just hibernates without locking the screen -what am I missing? EDIT: I've added the line whoami>>~/Desktop/test.txt to verify which user is executing the /etc/acpi/powerbtn.shscript. When pressing the power button, the file test.txt is created, but is empty. From this i conclude that the script is in fact being called when pressing the power button. What i do not understand is how the output of whoami can be empty...
