  PASS Summit is coming up, and I thought I’d post a few things. Summit Old... At the PASS Summit, you will get the chance to hear presentations by the SQL Server establishment. Just about every big name in the SQL Server world is a regular at the PASS Summit, so you will get to hear and meet people like Kalen Delaney (@sqlqueen) (who just recently got awarded MVP status for the 20th year running), and from all around the world such as the UK’s Chris Webb (@technitrain) or Pinal Dave (@pinaldave) from India. Almost all the household names in SQL Server will be there, including a large contingent from Microsoft. The PASS Summit is by far the best place to meet the legends of SQL Server. And they’re not all old. Some are, but most of them are younger than you might think. ...Summit New... The hottest topics are often about the newest technologies (such as SQL Server 2012). But you will almost certainly learn new stuff about older versions too. But that’s not what I wanted to pick on for this point. There are many new speakers at every PASS Summit, and content that has not been covered in other places. This year, for example, LobsterPot’s Roger Noble (@roger_noble) is giving a presentation for the first time. He’s a regular around the Australian circuit, but this is his first time presenting to a US audience. • problem with .Net xml importnode in powershell

  Hi, Im trying to construct a powershell script that uses some XML. I have a XML document where I try to add some values with email addresses. The finished xml document should have this format: (I'm only showing the relevant part of the xml here) <emailAddresses> <value>[email protected]</value> <value>[email protected]</value> <value>[email protected]</value> </emailAddresses> SO, in powershell I try to do this as a test, which fails: $newNumber = [xml] '<value>555-1215</value>' $newNode = $Request2.ImportNode($newNumber.value, $true) $emailnode.AppendChild($newNode) After some reading, I have figured out that if I do this, it suceeds: $newNumber = [xml] '<value name="flubber">555-1215</value>' $newNode = $Request2.ImportNode($newNumber.value, $true) $emailnode.AppendChild($newNode) So, I am stuck. I'm starting to wonder if I should use another function instead of importnode when I have several keys with the same name but different values. As you guys probably have figured out by now, i'm not an expert in xml. ANy help appreciated!

• Silverlight: DataContractSerializer cannot handle read only collection properties

  Hey Stackoverflowers :) For our Silverlight Project (SL4) I'm using a Model which might contain Lists (IList<AnotherModel>). According to good practice and rule CA2227:CollectionPropertiesShouldBeReadOnly the IList properties don't have a public setter. We serialize the Model using the DataContractSerializer which is working. But when I try to deserialize, a SecurityException is thrown by DataContractSerializer's ReadObject(Stream) Method, complaining that the target property (pointing to the IList property) cannot be set due to a missing public setter. Since the DataContractSerializer is sealed and neither extendable nor flexible so I currently see no chance to add some kind of additional rules which allow to deserialize the ILists using a foreach-loop on Add() method or some other method of transferring the collection items. I've also tried to dig into DataContractSerializer source (using Reflector) to create a little fork but it looks like i'd have to dig very deep and replicating whole serialization classes doesn't seem to be a viable solution. Do you see another chance to serialize a List with no public setter using the DataContractSerializer? Thank you very much in advance for your ideas! Thomas

• Enumerating .NET assembly resources at runtime

  I have a resource assembly with image files in it that are built using Resource or Content build action. This makes these files accessible using the Uris. However I cannot find the way to enumerate such resources. If I set the build action to Embedded Resource it becomes possible to enumerate the files with the following code: string[] resources = Assembly.GetExecutingAssembly().GetManifestResourceNames(); but it in turn makes these files inaccessible using Uris. The question is - how to enumerate resources that are compiled with either Resource or Content build action? NOTE: As Thomas Levesque pointed out it is possible to enumerate such resources by leveraging the AssemblyAssociatedContentFileAttribute, but it seems to only work for WPF Application assemblies and not for class library ones. So the question is still open.

• ASP.NET login control - can I add the FailureText as an item in a ValidationSummary?

  I'm currently working with the ASP.NET login control. I can set a custom failure text and I can add a literal on the page where the failure text is displayed if the login fails. I also have a validation summary on the page in which I collect all errors that can occur (for the moment it just validates that the user has entered a login name and a password. It would be really nice if I could add the failure text of the login control as an item in the validation summary, but I'm not sure if this is even possible? Hoping that the massive brainpower of stackoverflow can give me some pointers? Thanks! /Thomas Kahn PS. I'm coding in C#.

• Elisp performance on Windows and Linux

  I have the following dead simple elisp functions; the first removes the fill breaks from the current paragraph, and the second loops through the current document applying the first to each paragraph in turn, in effect removing all single line-breaks from the document. It runs fast on my low-spec Puppy Linux box using emacs 22.3 (10 seconds for 600 pages of Thomas Aquinas), but when I go to a powerful Windows XP machine with emacs 21.3, it takes almost an hour to do the same document. What can I do to make it run as well on the Windows machine with emacs 21.3? (defun remove-line-breaks () "Remove line endings in a paragraph."   I have been trying to get Ruby on Rails to migrate a database for the good part of today, the problems all seem to result with this issue, can someone please help! If its a radrails specific problem I guess Ill take this to their forums. • Round prices up to nearest 5 after conversion in oscommerce

  Hi there, A conversion question relating to prices in oscommerce: I am needing for a custom currency conversion to round the USD prices up to the nearest 5$ to avoid prices being displayed at silly prices such as $263. I am trying to convert to an int and round the following line : $curr-display_price($listing['products_price'], tep_get_tax_rate($listing['products_tax_class_id'])); ( as for some reason the price is displayed as a string, im guessing to include the currency sign) However not having much luck. Does anybody know where the root conversion takes place as it might be easier for me to round() or ceil() from there when it is a raw integer Or any other ideas of how I can round the conversion? Now I'm looking to search for a given winner X in the table, and find out what position he is in, when the table is ordered by points.   Hi, I just want advice on whether I could improve structure around a particular class which handles all disk access functions The structure of my program is that I have a class called Disk which gets data from flatfiles and databases on a, you guessed it, hard disk drive. I have functions like LoadTextFileToStringList, WriteStringToTextFile, DeleteLineInTextFile etc which are kind of "generic methods" In the same class I also have some more specific methods such as GetXFromDisk where X might be a particular field in a database table/query. Should I separate out the generic methods from the specialised. Should I make another class which inherits the generic methods. At the moment my class is static as there is no need to have an internal state of the class. I'm not really OOPing am I? Thanks Thomas

I m having a ID column in that table. Now suppose after inserting this record the value of the ID corresponding to this record is 100. Now how this 100 value came to know? Does the previous value of ID ie 99 (Suppose) is stored somewhere in some variable/file in the ORM layer or before inserting this value a query was fired to know about the last inserted value or database is itself doing that or anything else???

  I am putting in the samle date and i am supposed to do something similar what i am asking. I want to run a query that would pull values in any two columns out 3 if it has a 1 or if any one column has a 1 it will return just those results. However it should search all three columns and in any of the three columns where it found value as 1 it should return that result. Can anyone please help me with this. Thanks in advance. • Configuring DSVL to show camera images from Logitech9000 webcam

  I am trying to view camera feed from a Logitech9000 camera using DSVL(DirectShow Video Library) http://sourceforge.net/projects/dsvideolib/. The xml file currently looks as below: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?> <dsvl_input xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance" xsi:noNamespaceSchemaLocation="C:\Documents and Settings\Thomas\My Documents\projects\ARToolKit &amp; DSVideoLib\ARVideoLib\DsVideoLib\DsVideoLib.xsd"> <camera show_format_dialog="false" friendly_name="Logitech Webcam Pro 9000"> <pixel_format> <RGB24 flip_v="false"/> </pixel_format> </camera> </dsvl_input> However, the image that comes up looks vertically inverted. I tried changing the flip_v value to true in the config above but it did not make any difference. Any suggestions?

• Looking for easy way to analyze var_dump (PHP) on large objects

  I know (PHP's) var_dump is supposed to be "human readable" and all, but analyzing large objects is just a pain in the neck. I am struggling to make sense of a few of the large objects that are being passed around in a script that we are running. (I know that using xdebug with and IDE is a good idea, but I have not been able to get xdebug to run on this project for some reason - several days lost, ugh). Any ideas on how I can easily digest the contents of a really big var_dump? Any ideas are welcome... Although I am hoping that there is something similar to Thomas Frank's JSON tool (where you just put some code in and it gives a nice graphical representation).

Would especially like something similar to Joel. Something that is a bit edgy but informative. Pragmatic programmer has some key concepts but is a bit dry.

  Hi. In my application the user can defines search-conditions. He can choose a column, set an operator (equals, like, greater than, less or equal than, etc.) and give in the value. After the user clicks on a button and the application should do a search on the database with the condition. I use NHibernate and ask me now, what is the efficientest way to do this with NHibernate. Should I create a query with it like (Column=Name, Operator=Like, Value=%John%) var a = session.CreateCriteria<Customer>(); a.Add(Restrictions.Like("Name", "%John%")); return a.List<Customer>(); Or should I do this with HQL: var q = session.CreateQuery("from Customer where " + where); return q.List<Customer >(); Or is there a more bether solution? Megjegyzem ez sem kis ajándék, ráadásul a mester aktivitását mutatja az az adat, amely a fooldalon látható: Az elmúlt négy hétben 47 új kérdést kapott, elolvasott 532 reakciót és megválaszolt ezek közül 380-at. Csoda, hogy van ideje átruccanni Európába, és eloadást tartani a hazai szakembereknek is. Információim szerint ez olyannyira egyedülálló lehetoség lesz, hogy eddig még ilyen nem volt Magyarországon, másrészt valószínuleg a jövoben nem is nagyon lesz még a régióban sem, mivel egyre inkább az a trend hogy úgynevezett virtual class-okat fog tartani o is, azaz személyesen majd maximum az éves OpenWorld konferencián lehet ot látni egy-egy eloadás erejéig.   I was recently invited by Hyderabad Techies to deliver a keynote for their 16-day online session called TECH THUNDERS. This event has been running from May 15 and will continue up to the end of the month May 30). There would be a total of 30 sessions. It is the same group which has received the Microsoft Community Impact Award as the Best User Group in India as for developers. I have never talked about Professional Development before. Even if this was my first time to do so, I still accepted the wonderful challenge for the sake of the thousands of audience who were expected to attend this online event. Time is of the essence; I had 15 minutes to deliver the keynote and open the event. The reason why I was nervous was because I had to cover precisely only 15 minutes- no more, no less. If I had an hour, I would have been very confident because I knew I could do a good job for sure. However, I still needed to open the event as great as it can be even if the time was short. I finally created a 6-slide small presentation. In reality, there were only two pages which had the main contents of my keynote, and the remaining slides were just wrappers and decors. The slide in which I spent a good amount of time is the slide which talks about Professional Development. Learn the web – Blogs, Forums and Friends! Trust the Technology, Not Print – Test Everything! Community and You! I had a very little time creating the slide deck as I was busy the whole day doing the Advanced SQL Server Training. I had put together these slides during the tea/coffee break of my session. Though it was just a six-bullet point, I had received quite a few emails right after keynote requesting me to talk more about this subject and share the details of my slide deck. I have talked with the event organizer and he will put the keynote online very soon. The subject of the talk is very simple; it revolves around the community. Time has changed, and Internet has come a long way from where it was many years ago. Now that we are all connected, help via the Internet and useful software is easily available around us. In fact, RSS, Newletters and few other technologies have progressed so much that the help through news is now being delivered to our door steps, instead of going out and seeking them. Sometimes, a simple search online solves a lot of problems of many developers. The community is now the first stop for any developer when he or she needs help or just wants to hang around and share some thoughts. I strongly suggest everybody to be a part of the Tech Community. Be it online, offline community or just a local user group, I strongly advise all of you to get involved. I am active in the Community, and I must say I recommend getting drawn into it. • ASP.NET Asynchronous Pages and when to use them

  There have been several articles posted about using  asynchronous pages in ASP.NET but none of them go into detail as to when you should use them. I finally found a great post by Thomas Marquardt that explains the process in depth. He addresses a key misconception also: So, in your ASP.NET application, when should you perform work asynchronously instead of synchronously? Well, only 1 thread per CPU can execute at a time.  Did you catch that?  A lot of people seem to miss this point...only one thread executes at a time on a CPU. When you have more than this, you pay an expensive penalty--a context switch. However, if a thread is blocked waiting on work...then it makes sense to switch to another thread, one that can execute now.  It also makes sense to switch threads if you want work to be done in parallel as opposed to in series, but up until a certain point it actually makes much more sense to execute work in series, again, because of the expensive context switch. Pop quiz: If you have a thread that is doing a lot of computational work and using the CPU heavily, and this takes a while, should you switch to another thread? No! The current thread is efficiently using the CPU, so switching will only incur the cost of a context switch. Ok, well, what if you have a thread that makes an HTTP or SOAP request to another server and takes a long time, should you switch threads? Yes! You can perform the HTTP or SOAP request asynchronously, so that once the "send" has occurred, you can unwind the current thread and not use any threads until there is an I/O completion for the "receive". Between the "send" and the "receive", the remote server is busy, so locally you don't need to be blocking on a thread, but instead make use of the asynchronous APIs provided in .NET Framework so that you can unwind and be notified upon completion. Again, it only makes sense to switch threads if the benefit from doing so out weights the cost of the switch. • Good Scoop: The PeopleSoft/IBM Backstory

  Sometimes you're searching for something online and you find an unrelated, bonus nugget. Last week I stumbled across an interesting blog post from Chris Heller of a PeopleSoft consulting shop in San Ramon, CA called Grey Sparling. I don't know these guys. But Chris, who apparently used to work on the PeopleTools team, wrote a great article on a pre-acquisition, would-be deal between IBM and PeopleSoft that would have standardized PeopleSoft on IBM technology. The behind-the-scenes perspective is interesting. His commentary on the challenges that the company and PeopleSoft customers would have encountered if the deal had gone through was also interesting: ·         "No common ownership. It's hard enough to get large groups of people to work together when they work for the same company, but with two separate companies it is much, much harder. Even within Oracle, progress on Fusion applications was slow until Thomas Kurian took over Fusion applications in addition to Fusion middleware." ·         "No customer buy-in. PeopleSoft customers weren't asking for a conversion to WebSphere, so the fact that doing that could have helped PeopleSoft stay independent wouldn't have meant much to them, especially since the cost of moving to whatever a "PeopleSoft built on WebSphere" would have been significant." ·         "No executive buy-in. This is related to the previous point, but it's worth calling out separately. If Oracle had walked away and the deal with IBM had gone through, and PeopleSoft customers got put through the wringer as part of WebSphere move, all of the PeopleSoft project teams would be put in the awkward position of explaining to their management why these additional costs and headaches were happening. Essentially they would need to "sell" the partnership internally to their own management team. That's not a fun conversation to have." I'm not surprised that something like this was in the works. But I did find the inside scoop and Heller's perspective on the challenges particularly interesting.
