    I am newbie of Ubuntu 12.04 with Gnome3 Shell. Laptop Model: HP Pavilion DV6 1280US Full Updates Installed. I can hear sound played only when headphones are plugged in. Regular inbuilt speakers doesn't work. Speakers are fine, it should be some technical configuration/driver issue with OS. They work in the Windows OS in the same laptop.   • What is common between environments within a shell terminal session?

    I have a custom shell script that runs each time a user logs in or identity is assumed, its been placed in /etc/profile.d and performs some basic env variable operations. Recently I added some code so that if screen is running it will reattach it without needing me to type anything. There are some problems however. If I log-in as root, and su - to another user, the code runs a second time. Is there a variable I can set when the code runs the first time that will prevent a second run of the code? I thought to write something to the disk but then I dont want to prevent the code from running if I begin a new terminal session. Here is the code in question. It first attempts to reattach - if unsuccessful because its already attached (as it might be on an interruped session) it will 'take' the session back. screen -r if [ -z "$STY" ]; then exec screen -dR fi Ultimately this bug prevents me from substituting user to another user because as soon as I do so, it grabs the screen session and puts me right back where I started. I guess it is related to dash being the default shell? Is there a way to use tab completion in dash? If there isn't a way then how can i change my default shell to bash?

  • Advanced Terminal / Console apps for Mac OS X?

    I use a lot of command line programs, very often with similar arguments. Can anyone recommend an application or a workflow that allows me to store often used shell commands and search through my recent commands, using a GUI? I have commands that I use very often (eg. rsync a specific directory to a server) and other commands that I use less often. Creating shell scripts for every code snippet I might reuse seems a bit awkward. Especially for programs that I use seldomly, I end up reading the docs over and over again, because I forgot to write down the exact shell command. Ideally I would like an app that's just like Terminal.app, but provides some kind of history and snippet management. What do you use to keep track of shell commands?

" " . $user . "@" . $host); Is escapeshellcmd() enough or I need something more tricky? Or maybe I should use escapeshellarg() in this example? Thank you.

  • Django's manage.py shell won't indent

    I seem to have run into a strange bug or more likely some setting I am unfamiliar with on my system that is not allowing me to tab when I am in Django's shell (python manage.py shell is how I run it). For obvious reasons this is proving to be annoying since I can't do any loops or conditonals in the shell. If I hit tab it completes all functions that are available to me, like bash does in a terminal. I've tried just using spaces for my indents but I always get an indentation error. Does anyone know why this is happening and what I can do to get tab to work in my shell again? (It may be relevant to know that this is on a Ubuntu 9.04 system). Edit: tab works fine in the regular pythong shell, it's only in django's that it doesn't. Thanks.

    I've got a text file with an arbitrary number of lines, e.g.: one line some other line an additional line one more here I'd like to write a script to reorder those lines based on a given order. e.g. An input of 2 1 3 4 would swap the first and second lines. An input of 3 1 2 4 would put the 3rd line first, the 1st line second, the 2nd line third and keep the 4th line fourth. I could hack something together, but I'm wondering if there's an elegant solution? I can use either bash or ksh.

  • "shell not found" on start of backtrack 5

    I am using backtrack5 in VMware on my system. I was trying to change my default shell to ksh. After executing the 'chsh' command. On restarting the OS, it shows "Cannot execute ksh: no such file or directory", which apparently because of giving a bad path while changing shell. Because of this I am not able to start the OS, as I have no terminal to interact with (cannot start the GUI). Now I need to restore the previous shell, but I don't have any access to the terminal. Thanks for the help.

  • Running same powershell script multiple asynchronous times with separate runspace

    Hi, I have a powershell script which is called by a batch script which is called by Trap Receiver (which also passes environment variables) (running on windows 2008). The traps are flushed out at times in sets of 2-4 trap events, and the batch script will echo the trap details for each message to a logfile, but the powershell script on the next line of the batch script will only appear to process the first trap message (the powershell script writes to the same logfile). My interpetation is that the defaultrunspace is common to all iterations of the script running and this is why the others appear to be ignored. I've tried adding "-sta" when I invoke the powershell script using "powershell.exe -command", but this didn't help. I've researched and found a method using C# but I don't know this language, and busy enough learning powershell, so hoping to find a more direct solution especially as interleaving a "wrapper" between batch and powershell will involve passing the environment variables. http://www.codeproject.com/KB/threads/AsyncPowerShell.aspx I've hunted through stackoverflow, and again the only question of similar vein was using C#. Any suggestions welcome. Some script background: The powershell script is actually a modification of a great script found at gregorystrike website - cant post the link as I'm limited to one link but its the one for Lefthand arrays. Lots of mods so it can do multiple targets from one .ini file, taking in the environment variables, and options to run portions of the script interactively with winform. But you can see the gist of the original script. The batch script is pretty basic.   • A 'do' statement at the end of my perl script never runs

    In my main script, I am doing some archive manipulation. Once I have completed that, I want to run a separate script to upload my archives to and FTP server. Separately, these scripts work well. I want to add the FTP script to the end of my archive script so I only need to worry about scheduling one script to run and I want to guarantee that the first script completes it work before the FTP script is called. After looking at all the different methods to call my FTP script, I settled on 'do', however, when my do statement is at the end of the script, it never runs. When I place it in my main foreach loop, it runs fine, but it runs multiple times which I want to avoid since the FTP script can handle having multiple archives to upload. Is there something I am missing? Why does it not run? Thanks

However , some $#@@!@@ websites still use BOTH <script>...</script> and <script.../> So what happens is this : given <script..../> <div> Some Text </div> <script> scripting stuff </script> , neko parses all the above line as a script , so I get <script..../> &lt div &gt Some Text &lt/div &gt &lt script &gt scripting stuff </script> , And then I lose all the inside content :( Any advice?

  • $TERM set to "dumb" causes problems with suspend

    I've just upgraded from 11.04 to 11.10. So far I love it, everything seems just so much snappier. Now I just have one minor issue. When I try to suspend my laptop, it doesn't work - instead it fades out the screen, blocks it and then instantly wakes back. I've checked the logs in /var/log/pm-suspend.log and this fragment seems relevant: /usr/lib/pm-utils/sleep.d/000kernel-change suspend suspend: success. Running hook /usr/lib/pm-utils/sleep.d/00clear suspend suspend: TERM environment variable not set. /usr/lib/pm-utils/sleep.d/00clear suspend suspend: Returned exit code 1. Sat Nov 19 12:23:20 CET 2011: Inhibit found, will not perform suspend Sat Nov 19 12:23:20 CET 2011: Running hooks for resume The mentioned script at /usr/lib/pm-utils/sleep.d/00clear reads: #!/bin/bash clear When I open a terminal anywhere by hand, $TERM is set to either "linux" or "xterm". However somehow when the 00clear command is executed $TERM is set to "dumb". Two questions: What is the correct value for $TERM when running 00clear script? Where can I set it up? I've looked for solutions on the web, however I could only find information on how to configure $TERM in a regular terminal (and this one is set properly).

    I'm creating a batch script for a class and I've hit a roadblock I have to list all text files whose names are up to seven characters long on the whole c: drive - make the listing output in a wide formant - then append to Batch script file output.txt So far I have -- dir c:*txt/w/o/s/p c:/"My Batch Script File Assigment"/"Output"/"Batch Script File Output Data".txt The above does everything except limit the search to files with only 1-7 characters in their name. If anyone could point me in the right direction I would really appreciate it!

  • How can I check Internet connectivity in a console?

    Is there an easy way to check Internet connectivity from console? I am trying to play around in a shell script. One idea I seem is to wget --spider http://www.google.co.in/ and check the HTTP response code to interpret if the Internet connection is working fine. But I think there must be easy way without the need of checking a site that never crash ;) Edit: Seems like there can be a lot of factors which can be individually examined, good thing. My intention at the moment is to check if my blog is down. I have setup cron to check it every minute. For this, I am checking the HTTP response code of wget --spider to my blog. If its not 200, it notifies me (I believe this will be better than just pinging it, as the site may under be heavy load and may be timing out or respond very late). Now yesterday, there was some problem with my Internet. LAN was connected fine but just I couldn't access any site. So I keep on getting notifications as the script couldn't find 200 in the wget response. Now I want to make sure that it displays me notification when I do have internet connectivity. So, checking for DNS and LAN connectivity is a bit overkill for me as I don't have that much specific need to figure out what problem it is. So what do you suggest how I do it?

    This is easily done for a single file type, as answered in How to associate a file type within Wine with a native application?, by creating a .reg for the desired filetype. But this is for AVI only. I use some wine apps (uTorrent, Soulseek, Eudora, to name a few) that can launch a wide range of files. Email attachments, for example, can be JPG, DOC, PDF, PPS... its impossible (and not desirable) to track down all possible file types that one may receive in an email or download in a torrent. So I neeed a solution to be more generic and broad. I need the file association to honor whatever native app is currently configured. And I want this to be done for all file types configured in my system. I've already figured out how to make the solution generic. Simply replacing the launched app in .reg for winebrowser, like this: [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.pdf] @="PDFfile" "Content Type"="application/pdf" [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\PDFfile\Shell\Open\command] @="C:\\windows\\system32\\winebrowser.exe \"%1\"" Ive tested this and it works correctly. Since winebrowser uses xdg-open as a backend, and converts my windows path to a Unix one, the correct (Linux) app is launched. So I need a "batch" updater to wine's registry, sort of a wine-update-associations script that I can run whenever a new app is installed. Maybe a tool that can: List all Mime Types types in my system that have a default, installed app associated Extract all the needed info (glob, mime type, etc) Generate the .REG file in the above format The tricky part is: i've searched a LOT to find info about how association is done in Ubuntu 10.10 onwards, and documentation is scarce and confusing, to say the least. Freedesktop.org has no complete spec, and even Gnome docs are obsolete. So far I've gathered 4 files that contain association info, but im clueless on which (or why) to use, or how to use them to generate the .reg file: ~/.local/share/applications/mimeapps.list ~/.local/share/applications/miminfo.cache /usr/share/applications/miminfo.cache /etc/gnome/defaults.list Any help, script or explanation would be greatly appreciated!
