• Where's my tab completion and up-arrow behavior? (Ubuntu 10.04)

  I'm new to Linux, trying Ubuntu 10.04, preconfigured by host. When I log in (SSH) using the preconfigured account, the shell prompt is: user@hostname:~$ The up arrow scrolls through the list of recent shell commands, and tab-completion works as expected. However, when I create an account and log in (SSH) using that account, the shell prompt is simply "$", and the up arrow just prints a control character (^[[A). Can anyone tell me how to get my prompt, tab-completion, and up-arrow behavior set up? The fact that I'm getting control characters when I up-arrow makes me think that my account (or session) is in some mode I'm unfamiliar with. I know there is tab-completion code stored in bashrc that I can uncomment, but that doesn't seem to have any effect, even after logging out and logging back in. Am I in some strange mode when I SSH in with the new account, or are there just some session/account settings I need to set up, and can find information for anywhere on the Internet if I just knew what to look for?

  I am trying to run Protovis javascript from a Java program: ScriptEngineManager factory = new ScriptEngineManager(); ScriptEngine engine = factory.getEngineByName("JavaScript"); engine.eval(new java.io.FileReader("protovis-d3.1.js")); In order to run this, the JavaScript engine needs to have all the context of a web browser. The best option for this seems to be envjs. Unfortunately it seems that the version of Rhino included in the JVM isn't up to date and doesn't include everything that's necessary for envjs. Has anyone had any success working with a browser context from javax.script.

• 'script/console test' with spork and rspec not loading the whole environment?

  I'm trying to load up console to interact with some of my rspec mocking helpers. I expected that running script/console test would load an env similar to when I run spec. However, this doesn't appear to be the case. It looks like spec_helper is never loaded. Or, if it is, it's not actually running through the logic because spork has polluted it a bit. In short, is there a quick and easy way to get an interactive rspec party going?

  I am trying to cobble together a login script in PHP as a learning project. This is the code for my database write when the user registers. Both of these values are written to the database. $this->salt = md5(uniqid()); $this->password = md5($password.$salt); Upon logging in, the following function is fired. For some function challengeLogin($submittedPassword, $publicSalt, $storedPassword){ if(md5($submittedPassword.$publicSalt) == $actualPassword){ return 0; }else{ return 1; }; } Unfortunately, on stepping through my code, the two values have never equaled. Can someone help me understand why?

• HTML stops at a PHP script made to connect to a mysql database. No errors printed.

  I'm trying to set up a login script for PHP using the tutorial on this site. The problem is that the site stops when it hits these lines, no error, no text: <?php $conn = mysql_connect('localhost', 'root', 'password') or die('error line7' . mysql_error()); mysql_select_db('mydb', $conn) or die('error line8' . mysql_error()); ?> If I take out these lines, the rest of the html runs perfectly. I've double checked my passwords and everything, nothing is working. I know very little about php and mysql other than what I've learned trying to set this up.

• How to be notified when a script's background job completes?

  My question is very similar to this one except that my background process was started from a script. I could be doing something wrong but when I try this simple example: #!/bin/bash set -mb # enable job control and notification sleep 5 & I never receive notification when the sleep background command finishes. However, if I execute the same directly in the terminal, $ set -mb $ sleep 5 & [1]+ Done sleep 5 I see the output that I expect. I'm using bash on cygwin. I'm guessing that it might have something to do with where the output is directed, but trying various output redirection, I'm not getting any closer?

• Small script to look for Project Replication actions that have failed

  Today when looking at a couple of projects on a ZFS 7320 Storage Appliance I noticed on one project that one of its replication actions had failed, as I hadn't checked the Recent Alerts log yet I was not aware of this. I decided to write a small script to check if there were others that had failed. Nothing fancy, just a loop through all projects, look at the project's replication child and compare the values of the last_sync and last_try properties and print the result if they're not equal. • xfce4 - 'Run Program' dialogue box does not appear when double clicking script

  Ubuntu 12.04 Xfce4 On my previous Ubuntu distro, when I double clicked scripts I got a little dialogue window that asked me if I wanted to run the script as a program or run it in terminal. Similar to this window: Since upgrading, I have never seen that window. I have ensured that the option to 'Allow executing as a program is enabled' and the script works if I run it through terminal. I simply just don't get the prompt. Any ideas?

• Unknown error sourcing a script containing 'typeset -r' wrapped in command substitution

  I wish to source a script, print the value of a variable this script defines, and then have this value be assigned to a variable on the command line with command substitution wrapping the source/print commands. This works on ksh88 but not on ksh93 and I am wondering why. $ cat typeset_err.ksh #!/bin/ksh unset _typeset_var typeset -i -r _typeset_var=1 DIR=init # this is the variable I want to print When run on ksh88 (in this case, an AIX 6.1 box), the output is as follows: $ A=$(. ./typeset_err.ksh; print $DIR) $ echo $A init When run on ksh93 (in this case, a Linux machine), the output is as follows: $ A=$(. ./typeset_err.ksh; print $DIR) -ksh: _typeset_var: is read only $ print $A ($A is undefined) The above is just an example script. The actual thing I wish to accomplish is to source a script that sets values to many variables, so that I can print just one of its values, e.g. $DIR, and have $A equal that value. I do not know in advance the value of $DIR, but I need to copy files to $DIR during execution of a different batch script. Therefore the idea I had was to source the script in order to define its variables, print the one I wanted, then have that print's output be assigned to another variable via $(...) syntax. Admittedly a bit of a hack, but I don't want to source the entire sub-script in the batch script's environment because I only need one of its variables. The typeset -r code in the beginning is the error. The script I'm sourcing contains this in order to provide a semaphore of sorts--to prevent the script from being sourced more than once in the environment. (There is an if statement in the real script that checks for _typeset_var = 1, and exits if it is already set.) So I know I can take this out and get $DIR to print fine, but the constraints of the problem include keeping the typeset -i -r. In the example script I put an unset in first, to ensure _typeset_var isn't already defined. By the way I do know that it is not possible to unset a typeset -r variable, according to ksh93's man page for ksh. There are ways to code around this error. The favorite now is to not use typeset, but just set the semaphore without typeset (e.g. _typeset_var=1), but the error with the code as-is remains as a curiosity to me, and I want to see if anyone can explain why this is happening. By the way, another idea I abandoned was to grep the variable I need out of its containing script, then print that one variable for $A to be set to; however, the variable ($DIR in the example above) might be set to another variable's value (e.g. DIR=$dom/init), and that other variable might be defined earlier in the script; therefore, I need to source the entire script to make sure I all variables are defined so that $DIR is correctly defined when sourcing.

• shell script over SSH ends unexpectedly after running 'ant build'

  I wrote a shell script that runs on remote host to build source code with 'ant build' command, and then distribute the built binary to other servers. However, right after Ant build is over successfully(I can see the command line output saying Build was successful), the ssh session ends and whatever commands after 'ant build' does not get executed. I'm confused what might be cause of this behavior. I suspected that it might be because the 'ant build' command takes too long time, and SSH somehow quits itself after that long command. But I don't think that's correct since if I just do 'sleep 60' in place of 'ant build' command, it actually execute latter commands as intended. I'm new at shell programming, so I might have made some silly misassumption. Can someone provide a pointer to a possible cause of this problem? • Apache2 cgi's crash on odbc db access (but run fine from shell)

  Problem overview (details below): I'm having an apache2 + ruby integration problem when trying to connect to an ODBC data source. The main problem boils down to the fact that scripts that run fine from an interactive shell crash ruby on the database connect line when run as a cgi from apache2. Ruby cgi's that don't try to access the ODBC datasource work fine. And (again) ruby scripts that connect to a database with ODBC do fine when executed from the command line (or cron). This behavior is identical when I use perl instead of ruby. So, the issue seems to be with the environment provided for ruby (perl) by apache2, but I can't figure out what is wrong or what to do about it. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to get these cgi scripts to work properly? I've tried many different things to get this to work, and I'm happy to provide more detail of any aspect if that will help. • Start script on network connect

  I am trying to get a GNU/Linux Bash script to run as soon as a network connection is established on my Raspberry Pi. I tried following the instructions on several pages: I have tried adding my script to /etc/network/if-up.d and running sudo chmod ugo+x on the file. I have tried adding the line post-up <path/to/script.sh> to /etc/network/interfaces I am really quite clueless here.
