How to read a file from bottom to top in Ruby?

I've been working on a log viewer for a Rails app and have found that I need to read around 200 lines of a log file from bottom to top instead of the default top to bottom. Log files can get quite large, so I've already tried and ruled out the IO.readlines("log_file.log")[-200..-1] method. Are there any other ways to go about reading a file backwards in Ruby without the need for a plugin or gem?

Is there a way I can overlay graphics on top of all windows using C#?

I want to create a C# app which rests in the system tray. However, I would like this application to overlay certain graphic elements / drawing on top of the screen above all windows at certain times. So, for example, while my application is running, even though minimized to the tray, it will draw certain shapes on top of the screen regardless of what is there. Is this possible using C#? If not, is there any other language that would have this capability?

Twitter Bootstrap: How to make top fixed navbar stay in container and not stretch?

The only difference is it would be fixed to the top. I was wondering, how do I make this become a fixed navbar as if I was using the navbar-fixed-top class?

C# Item system design approach, should I use abstract classes, interfaces or virutals?

I'm working on a Resident Evil 1/2/3/0/Remake type of game. Currently I've done a big part of the inventory system (here's a link if you wanna see my inventory, pretty outdated, added a lot of features and made a lot of enhancements) Now I'm thinking about how to approach the items system, If you've played any Resident Evil game or any of its likes you should be familiar with what I'm trying to achieve. Here's a very simple category I made for the items: So you have different items, with different operations you could perform on them, there are usable items that you could use, like for example herbs and first aid kits that 'using' them would affect your health, keys to unlock doors, and equipable items that you could 'equip' like weapons. Also, you can 'combine' two items together to get new one, like for example mixing a green and red herb would give you a new type of herb, or combining a lighter with a paper, would give you a burnt paper, or ammo with a gun, would reload the gun or something. etc. You know the usual RE drill. Not all items are 'transformable', in that, for example: lighter + paper = burnt paper (it's the paper that 'transforms' to burnt paper and not the lighter, the lighter is not transformable it will remain as it is) green herb + red herb = newHerb1 (both herbs will vanish and transform to this new type of herb) ammo + gun = reload gun (ammo state will remain as it is, it won't change but it will just decrease, nothing will happen to the gun it just gets reloaded) Also a key note to remember is that you can't just combine items randomly, each item has a 'mating' item(s). So to sum up, different items, and different operations on them. The question is, how to approach this, design-wise? I've been learning about interfaces, but it just doesn't quite get into my head, I mean, why not just use classes with the good old inheritance? I know the technical details of interfaces and that the cool thing about them is that they don't require an inheritance chain, but I just can't see how to use them properly, that is, if they were the right thing to use here. So should I go with just classes and inheritance? just like in the tree I showed you? or should I think more about how to use interfaces? (IUsable, IEquipable, ITransformable) - why not just use classes UsableItem, Equipable item, TransformableItem? I want something that won't give me headaches in the long run, something resilient/flexible to future changes. I'm OK using classes, but I smell something better here. The way I'm thinking is to possibly use both inheritance and interfaces, so that you have a branch like this: item - equipable - weapon. but then again, the weapon has methods like 'reload' 'examine' 'equip' some of them 'combine' so I'm thinking to make weapon implement ICombinable?... not all items get used the same way, using herbs will increase your health, using a key will open a door, so IUsable maybe? Should I use a big database (XML for example) for all the items, items names, mates, nRowsReq, nColsReq, etc? Here the data has been sorted by date, so the 'SomeData' column of the most recent unique value of each user. Top 1 SomeData isn't going to work because it will only return for one user. Top - what does Virtual memory size mean? ...linux/ubuntu

I am running Top to monitor my server performance and 2 of my java processes show virtual memory of upto 800MB-1GB. Is that a bad thing? What does virtual memory mean? Hi, It seems the universe is against me this week. I have been happily coding away on my ASP.Net application for weeks now without issues. Today I tried to add a textbox to a form, and on saving the form, I received the following error: Generation of designer file failed: Cannot use a leading .. to exit above the top directory I googled, but with no luck. iPhone:How to make navigation top bar style to same like "Black Navigation Bar" programmatically?

I have a Navigation project which has only a TableView. By default, i could see the navigation bar there when running the application. I want to change the navigation bar style to same like if we see in I.B there is one called "Top Bar" which has "Black Navigation Bar" style (Which shows Black navigation top bar but some kind of Gray shade will be there). I want the same in my navigation bar now, not any other color or style. How do i fix it? Note: 1. I used "self.navigationController.navigationBar.barStyle = UIBarStyleBlack;" , but it shows the navigation bar in utter black color. I don't want that, i want some kind of Gray shade in black, similar to "Top Bar" which has "Black Navigation Bar". I tried some tint color addition to the above, like "self.navigationController.navigationBar.tintColor = [UIColor grayColor];" but i observe the same utter black shows in navigation bar. I tried "navigationBar.barStyle = UIBarStyleBlackTranslucent;" but it doesn't fit and show with status bar properly. Instead it overlaps(hidden) half black with status bar and half black shows outside. Could someone teach me? Thank you.

When is it possible to override top-level bindings in (R7RS) scheme?

I have read the current draft of the forthcoming R7RS scheme standard (small language), but I don't understand under which conditions it is not an error to redefine top-level bindings. I guess that it is possible to define or set! a binding that has been introduced at the top-level of a program a second time. But what about imported bindings from an external library? Is it possible to override these bindings by the standard? On page 26/27 of the report, it says: The top level of a program may also include import declarations. In a library declaration, it is an error to import the same identifier more than once with different bindings, or to redefine or mutate an imported binding with define, define-syntax or set!. However, a REPL should permit these actions. Does it mean that redefining is only an error when it does happen in libraries for imported bindings? I understand that it prohibits optimisations by compilers if the compiler does not know whether, say + still means the built-in addition or is any other user-specified error. But from this perspective, it does not make sense to restrict forbidding to rebind on the library level, when it would also make sense (at least) for imported bindings in programs. P.S.: As this is all about the environment of a scheme program: am I right in saying that environments are not first class citizens because one cannot get hold of the current environment? (Which, in turn, allows a compiled program to forget about the chosen names of the bindings.)

Does IE6 Really not Allow Me to set width/height from left/right/top/bottom???

Building a site super quick and having it work on all my Mac browsers, I thought I'd take a gander on a friends old dell laptop with Windows XP and IE6. Nothing looks remotely correct. It's because I used lots of left/right/top/bottom (constraint) declarations to size elements proportionally to their parent's size (I didn't use percent sizes because the percents refer to the parent's size before margins and padding are applied, left/right/top/bottom refer to them after with position:absolute. I'm asking about that here :)). I've read lots these past few weeks on how horrible IE6 (and IE) is in general, but because of all the reasons people say to support it (large market share and the fear of installing better software), and because half the people in the company we're building a site for use IE6 (getting them to upgrade to Chrome slowly but surely), I thought if I could just get IE6 to render my constraints, that might help. So I am messing around with simple layouts here, and they work fine in my latest versions of Firefox, Safari, Chrome, and Opera, but IE6 is basically saying: If you haven't set a width or height on me, I'm assuming it's zero. But position:absolute; left:0px; right:0px; top:0px; bottom:0px; on a container that's width:1000px; height:1000px; should be the same as setting width:1000px; height:1000px on the child, no? Taking a quick look at the source for this, why won't IE6 render the constraint based absolutely positioned AND SIZED elements? (note: I will be messing around with that file for a while) Thanks

Can I make Gimp 2.8.4 in OSx make the file I just opened be the top window automatically?

When I open an image file in Gimp 2.8.4 in OSx Mountain Lion 10.8.4 via the File Open menu, it does not automatically make that image the top window, requiring that I then find that window via the Window menu. Very jarring UX! Is there a way to modify this behavior so that it behaves like most GUI applications and brings the document just opened to the fore? Is this a bug in Gimp 2.8? Interestingly in my Ubuntu 12.04 with Gimp 2.6.12 this is not a problem. Since I haven't used Gimp much at all until this month, I don't know if this is a new problem or not.

just a question in the title Is it OK for the top level domain .FM not to provide the whois server? Are there any other TLD that behaves in the same manner? The question came out of the whois command answer $ whois dot.fm This TLD has no whois server, but you can access the whois database at http://www.dot.fm/whois.html EDIT Sorry for the "OK" in the question, yes it is quite vague. We're desiring to acquire the domain name in *.fm and my worry was about to be more suspected for the antispam filters and other services relying on the DNS and so. Is this observation have sense or not?

Set top level directory to be handled by Perl?

I have an Apache server set up to use mod_perl. I have it set up to handle all requests using a Perl module MyModule. Here is part of my httpd.conf: LoadModule perl_module modules/mod_perl.so <Directory /> Order Deny,Allow Allow from all </Directory> PerlModule MyModule <Location /> SetHandler modperl PerlResponseHandler MyModule </Location> This seems to work fine, except top level directory (ie. www.mysite.com/) is not being sent to MyModule. What's going wrong?

Does /boot safe on top of a lvm LV (logical volume)?

Title already asked the question. More specifically, I read in some documents that logical volumes are nice in general but not for /boot in a linux system. They say that bootloaders don't understand LVM volumes, so create a separate partition for /boot out of lvm. I recently installed Ubuntu server (9.10) for my home server, but by default /boot is created in the LVM. Everything is fine now, but I am not sure it is safe to use /boot in LVM. Second question is do I really need a physical partition (volume)(pv) for /boot or is it equally fine if I put it into a logical volume (lv) on top of a single shared volume group. Setting up a server with only subdomains, any connection to top level goes to main server on another IP?

I'm developing a web app where users will have their own sub-domain to login to and use the application. I'm running wordpress for the main website to manage the public / front end. Our application is developed in zend framework. The zf project is currently in a subfolder on the main server. I'd like to place the zend framework project onto another server (different IP) and keep it separate from the the wordpress front end www.domain.com site. The zf application server will run nginx. I'm not sure how to setup a server to run strictly sub domains. Setting up the virtual hosts in the configuration file is no problem. To give the users username.domain.com. But what about the main default configuration file? How would that be configured since the top level domain is technically another server (wordpress) on another IP?

Firefox 11.0 Right-Click Dropdown Menu (and Menu Options at Window Top) Flickering - Potential Bug?

About a week ago my Windows 7 machine starting exhibiting odd Firefox behavior. When I right click on something the drop-down menu flickers and when the mouse is hovering over a field, I can't really see it. This same behavior happens in other ways too, like in the top File, Edit , View, etc menus. I click them and they flicker, when I hover over them, and then they get obscured when I hover over the one I want. I did some research and didn't really find anything. Some people found similar behavior in applications THEY were building. But mine is a global problem. Happens on all sites, as far as I can tell. This is why I suspect it's my Firefox installation. I thought about reinstalling, but if there was another option, I'd like to explore that too. The behavior is not really capture-able, so I don't have anything except words to describe it. Sorry ;-( Thanks.
