• What makes you look like a bad developer (ie a hacker) [on hold]

  This comes from a lot of people about me, so I have to look at myself. So I would wonder what make one a bad developer (ie a hacker). These are a few things about me I used IDE intensively, all features, you name it: auto-completion, refactoring, quick fixes, open type, view hierarchy, API documentation, etcc When I deal with writing code for a project in domain I am not used to (I can't have fluency in this, this is new), I only have a very rough high level ideas. I don't use the standard modeling diagrams for early detail planning. Unorthodox diagrams that I invented when I need to draw the design in details. I don't use UML or similar, I find them not enough. I divide the sorts of diagram I drew into 3 types. Very high level diagrams which probably can be understood by almost anybody. Data entity diagram used for modeling data objects only (like ER diagrams and tree for inheritances and composition). Action diagrams for agents/classes and their interactions on data objects they contain. Constantly changing the interface (public methods) between interacting agents/classes if the need arises. I am more refrained when the interface and the module have matured Write initial concept code in a quick hackie way just so that the module works in the general cases so that I can play around with it. The module will be re-factored intensively after playing around so I could see more corner cases that I couldn't or (wouldn't want) anticipate before writing code. Using JUnit for integration-like test by using TestSuite class and ordering Unit test classes in the suite Using debugger almost anytime there is a problem instead of reading the code Constantly search on the internet for how to do some thing with some library that I haven't used a lot. So judgment, am I a bad developer? a hacker? Put in other words, to make sure this is not considered off-topic: - Is this bad practice to make your code too agile during incubating/prototyping phase of software development - Is it bad practice to use JUnit for integration testing, (I know there are other framework for integration testing, but those frameworks are for a specific products, not general)

• Using the Coherence ConcurrentMap Interface (Locking API)

  For many developers using Coherence, the first place they look for concurrency control is the com.tangosol.util.ConcurrentMap interface (part of the NamedCache interface). The ConcurrentMap interface includes methods for explicitly locking data. Despite the obvious appeal of a lock-based API, these methods should generally be avoided for a variety of reasons: They are very "chatty" in that they can't be bundled with other operations (such as get and put) and there are no collection-based versions of them. Locks do directly not impact mutating calls (including puts and entry processors), so all code must make explicit lock requests before modifying (or in some cases reading) cache entries. They require coordination of all code that may mutate the objects, including the need to lock at the same level of granularity (there is no built-in lock hierarchy and thus no concept of lock escalation). Even if all code is properly coordinated (or there's only one piece of code), failure during updates that may leave a collection of changes to a set of objects in a partially committed state. There is no concept of a read-only lock. In general, use of locking is highly discouraged for most applications. Instead, the use of entry processors provides a far more efficient approach, at the cost of some additional complexity.

• How to handle class dependency with interfaces and implementatons

  I'm using ObjectAid with Eclipse to generate UML class diagrams for my latest Java project, and I currently have a handful of situations like this, where I have a dependency between two interfaces, as well as one of the implementations of one of the interfaces. Here, foo is the graphics library I'm using. In the previous example, FooCanvas draws ITexture objects to the screen, and both FooCanvas and its interface, ICanvas, take ITexture objects as arguments to their methods. The method in the canvas classes which cause this dependency is the following: void drawTexture(ITexture texture, float x, float y); Additionally, I tried a variation on the method signature using Java's generics: <T extends ITexture> void drawTexture(T texture, float x, float y); The result of this was a class diagram where the only dependencies where between the interfaces and the implementing classes, and no dependency by a canvas object on a texture. I'm not sure if this is more ideal or not. Is the dependency of both the interface and implementation on another interface an expected pattern, or is it typical and/or possible to keep the implementation 'isolated' from its interfaces dependencies? Or is the generic method the ideal solution?

• How to prevent computer from automatically sleeping and/or hibernating?

  I'm running Ubuntu 12.04, and my laptop* won't wake from sleep/suspend/hibernate. (Is sleep the same thing as suspend?) I'm not even sure which of these things it's doing. When I am done working for the day, I lock my screen (Control-Alt-L). When I come back the next day, the screen is in power saving mode, and no amount of typing or clicking (on the usb keyboard/mouse or the builtin keyboard/trackpad) nor tapping the power button will bring it back to life. The only way I can get my machine to work is to hold down the power button until it shuts off, then press the power button again to turn it back on. Obviously, anything I had open from the previous day is pretty much gone -- in particular, my VMs all get rudely shut down without any warning. This is driving me INSANE. I spend the first hour of every work day trying to figure out how to get my computer to stop locking up over night. What I've tried: Editing the org.freedesktop.upower.policy to disable suspend and hibernate. Setting power management options in "Power" section of "System Settings". Looking at all power management options in the BIOS (none appear to be relevant to sleep/suspend/hibernate). Reading every forum post/askubuntu post that I can find that's even tangentially related to the subject. My question: how to disable the automatic sleep and/or hibernate (and/or anything similar) in Ubuntu 12.04. I don't care if it's still possible to sleep/suspend/hibernate/whatever by pushing buttons or running some command or reciting led zeppelin lyrics backwards. I just want my laptop to be ready for work in the morning. *The laptop is a Dell Latitude something or other. I don't want to get too specific because I've seen a lot of similar questions get closed for being too specific. I think my question is generic enough to stand -- it's a question about the latest, stable version of Ubuntu.

• CCMoveBy values on update()

  Hope you can help me. This is my problem: I have a scheduled update, here I track the movements of my objects (sprites), I move them with CCMoveBy, and I need to constantly update the zOrder. For setting the zOrder I've made a setZOrder(), which it takes the actual position of the sprite. And here is the problem, I get all the X and Y values AFTER the object is in the target. I know I get the values after the object is in the new position because I've made a CCLog. I can read all the values from the sprite, only when it's in the new position, so everything is well sorted only when the objects are not moving. How can I get the CCMoveBy values on every tick update? (or how can I get the CCMoveBy values in "real-time"?) • Representing a world in memory

  I'm attempting to write a chunk based map system for a game, where as the player moves around chunks are loaded/unloaded, so that the program doesn't run out of memory by having the whole map in memory. I have this part mostly working, however I've hit a wall regarding how to represent the contents of each chunk in memory because of my so far limited understanding of OOP languages. The design I have currently has a ChunkManager class that uses a .NET List type to store instances of Chunk classes. The "chunks" consist of "blocks". It's similar to a Minecraft style game. Inside the Chunk classes, I have some information such as the chunk's X/Y coordinate etc, and I also have a three dimensional array of Block objects. (Three dimensional because I need XYZ values) Here's the problem: The Block class has some basic properties, and I had planned on making different types of blocks inherit from this "base" class. So for example, I would have "StoneBlock", "WaterBlock" etc. So because I have blocks of many different types, I don't know how I would create an array with different object types in each cell. This is how I currently have the three dimensional array declared in my Chunk class: private Block[][][] ArrayOfBlocks; But obviously this will only accept Block objects, not any of the other classes that inherit from Block. How would I go about creating this? Or am I doing it completely wrong and there's a better way?

• Growing your VirtualBox Virtual Disk

  Don't you just hate it when this happens: Fortunately, if you're running inside VirtualBox, you can resize your virtual disk and magically make your guest have a bigger disk very easily. There are 2 steps to doing this... 1. Resize the virtual disk Use the VBoxManage command line tool to extend the size of the Virtual Disk, specifying the path to the disk and the size in MB: VBoxManage modifyhd <uuid>|<filename> [--type normal|writethrough|immutable|shareable| readonly|multiattach] [--autoreset on|off] [--compact] [--resize <megabytes>|--resizebyte <bytes>]   If you booted up your guest at this point, the extra space is seen as an unformatted area on the disk, like this: So we now need to tell the guest about the extra space available. 2. Extend the guest's partition to use the extra space How you do this step depends on you guest OS type and the tools you have available. Linux guests often include the excellent gparted partition editor, whereas Windows 7 and 8 provide the Computer Management tool which can resize partitions. Unfortunately, my Windows XP vm has no such tool. But I do have a couple of other options: Most Linux installable .isos include the aforementioned gparted tool, so I could simply attach, say, an Ubuntu.iso as a Virtual CD/DVD in my Windows XP vm and boot off that. Then use gparted to extend the Windows XP partition, before finally rebooting. But I took another route and attached my resized virtual disk to a Windows Server 2012 vm I had lying around. Then I used the Computer Management tool in Windows Server 2012 to extend the partition of the Windows XP disk, before shutting down, unplugging the disk and reattaching to my Windows XP vm. (Note that if your vm's use different disk controllers, Windows will check the disks on booting). When I finally boot up my Windows XP guest I see the available disk space and all is well. • How do I sell Oracle? It all starts with the database

Much of what we do at Oracle is intended to optimize our customers' investments in the Oracle database. Many of our acquisitions, new features in existing products, new applications, are often designed to improve the experience of the 400,000 Oracle database customers worldwide. Once you find an Oracle database customer, the next set of questions are much easier, but depend on your expertise: License Management, Upsell, and Services. Let's start with License Management: Have there been any changes to your infrastructure since you purchased the database licenses? Have you upgraded the servers on which the Oracle database is running? Have the number of users or employees increased since the last license purchase? Yes to any of these questions will lead to investigating correct licensing. The goal is to provide a "soft" license review. Oracle generally does not require any license keys to install our software, so we need to help our customers with compliance. Correct licensing is essential to managing costs, and can provide a great way to efficiently manage IT spend. • SMO ConnectionContext.StatementTimeout setting is ignored

  I am successfully using Powershell with SMO to backup most databases. However, I have several large databases in which I receive a "timeout" error "System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: Timeout expired". The timout consistently occurs at 10 minutes. I have tried setting ConnectionContext.StatementTimeout to 0, 6000, and to [System.Int32]::MaxValue. The setting made no difference. I have found a number of Google references which indicate setting it to 0 makes it unlimited. No matter what I try, the timeouts consistently occur at 10 minutes. I even set Remote Query Timeout on the server to 0 (via Studio Manager) to no avail. Below is my SMO connection where I set the time out and the actual backup function. Further below is the output from my script. UPDATE Interestingly enough, I wrote the backup function in C# using VS 2008 and the timeout override does work within that environment. I am in the process of incorporating that C# process into my Powershell Script until I can find out why the timeout override does not work with just Powershell.   I am deploying an ear application on Jboss 5.1.0. and i facing some issues. I had two ears one i had copied to deploy folder and the other in deploy-hasingleton. The ear which is in deploy-hasingleton is throwing some errors.when i serached in google i came to know that there is some issue with EJB 2.x on jboss 5.1.i was not able to find the solution. • "type" Command Not Working As Expected on Git Bash

  The type command, in Linux, returns the location, on the filesystem, of the given file, if it is in the current folder or the $PATH. This functionality is also available through Windows with the Git Bash command line program. The command also returns a file's location given the file without its extension (.exe, .vbs, etc.) However, I have run into what seems like a strange corner case where the file exists on the $PATH but doesn't get returned using the command. I am thinking of buying a new computer soon, so I looked up the method of transferring the license key from one computer to another, in preparation for actually doing this. The method I found mentioned the files slmgr.vbs and slui.exe, both of which reside in the C:/Windows\System32 folder, which is in my $PATH, as usual for a Windows computer. However, these two files aren't showing up when I use the type command. Also, neither gets executed when I call the files as commands without their extensions in Git Bash, and only slmgr.vbs gets executed when I call them with the extensions. Finally, slmgr.vbs is shown when listing the folder's contents in Git Bash, as well, but slui.exe isn't. I thought this might have to do with permissions, and, indeed, both files have very restrictive permissions, as you can see in the pictures below, but they both have the same permissions, which wouldn't explain why one gets executed and the other doesn't when called directly, nor why one file is listed on command line but the other isn't. • Passing a variable from Excel 2007 Custom Task Pane to Hosted PowerShell

• Random Complete System Unresponsiveness Running Mathematical Functions

  I have a program that loads a file (anywhere from 10MB to 5GB) a chunk at a time (ReadFile), and for each chunk performs a set of mathematical operations (basically calculates the hash). After calculating the hash, it stores info about the chunk in an STL map (basically <chunkID, hash>) and then writes the chunk itself to another file (WriteFile). That's all it does. This program will cause certain PCs to choke and die. The mouse begins to stutter, the task manager takes 2 min to show, ctrl+alt+del is unresponsive, running programs are slow.... the works. I've done literally everything I can think of to optimize the program, and have triple-checked all objects. What I've done: Tried different (less intensive) hashing algorithms. Switched all allocations to nedmalloc instead of the default new operator Switched from stl::map to unordered_set, found the performance to still be abysmal, so I switched again to Google's dense_hash_map. Converted all objects to store pointers to objects instead of the objects themselves. Caching all Read and Write operations. Instead of reading a 16k chunk of the file and performing the math on it, I read 4MB into a buffer and read 16k chunks from there instead. Same for all write operations - they are coalesced into 4MB blocks before being written to disk. Run extensive profiling with Visual Studio 2010, AMD Code Analyst, and perfmon. Set the thread priority to THREAD_MODE_BACKGROUND_BEGIN Set the thread priority to THREAD_PRIORITY_IDLE Added a Sleep(100) call after every loop. Even after all this, the application still results in a system-wide hang on certain machines under certain circumstances. Perfmon and Process Explorer show minimal CPU usage (with the sleep), no constant reads/writes from disk, few hard pagefaults (and only ~30k pagefaults in the lifetime of the application on a 5GB input file), little virtual memory (never more than 150MB), no leaked handles, no memory leaks. The machines I've tested it on run Windows XP - Windows 7, x86 and x64 versions included. None have less than 2GB RAM, though the problem is always exacerbated under lower memory conditions. I'm at a loss as to what to do next. I don't know what's causing it - I'm torn between CPU or Memory as the culprit. CPU because without the sleep and under different thread priorities the system performances changes noticeably. Memory because there's a huge difference in how often the issue occurs when using unordered_set vs Google's dense_hash_map. What's really weird? Obviously, the NT kernel design is supposed to prevent this sort of behavior from ever occurring (a user-mode application driving the system to this sort of extreme poor performance!?)..... but when I compile the code and run it on OS X or Linux (it's fairly standard C++ throughout) it performs excellently even on poor machines with little RAM and weaker CPUs. What am I supposed to do next? How do I know what the hell it is that Windows is doing behind the scenes that's killing system performance, when all the indicators are that the application itself isn't doing anything extreme? Any advice would be most welcome.

• Unable to connect SQL Server instance from Visual Studio 2008 Version 9.0

  I am getting the below error from VS on an 32-bit XP Professional server even though I set Tools-Options-Database Tools-Data Connections to "SIDEKICK", which is the name of my computer. In other words SIDEKICK should default to the full SQLSERVER. In other words, I want VS to use SQLSERVER instead of SQLSERVER EXPRESS. And I can clearly see my database both from VS in the Server Explorer and also in SSMS 2008. Furthermore, I can view the tables of this database in Server Explorer from VS. I do not get any build errors. And it looks like all of the naming is consistent in my web.config file. I am developing my website according to a Microsoft tutorial, so I should not be getting an error.   Hi all-- We're upgrading from SQL Server 2005 to 2008. Almost every database in the 2005 instance is set to 2000 compatibility mode, but we're jumping to 2008. Our testing is complete, but what we've learned is that we need to get faster at it. I've discovered some stored procedures that either SELECT data from missing tables or try to ORDER BY columns that don't exist. Wrapping the SQL to create the procedures in SET PARSEONLY ON and trapping errors in a try/catch only catches the invalid columns in the ORDER BYs. It does not find the error with the procedure selecting data from the missing table. SSMS 2008's intellisense, however, DOES find the issue, but I can still go ahead and successfully run the ALTER script for the procedure without it complaining. So, why can I even get away with creating a procedure that fails when it runs? Are there any tools out there that can do better than what I've tried?
