• Websockets through Stunnel is giving random bytes.

  I have several servers set up for a web application that I am developing. One is a load balancing server, and I'm running a php WebSockets server on this balancer. The website that I am developing on uses ssl, so I have my WebSockets running through a wss uri connecting directly to the balancer, where I have set up stunnel4 to decrypt all traffic at a certain port and re-rout it to my php WebSockets server. This works fine when it comes down to connecting to my server. That's not the problem. The problem occurs when I try to send data to the server. Occasionally when I try this, stunnel does not appear to be decrypting the data properly. I get garbage characters in my termanal running the server: what appear to be completely random bytes. This can sometimes go on for several consecutive messages that I send before abruptly working again. It is very erratic and unpredictable. Sometimes I refresh the page, and all the messages work perfectly. Sometimes the WebSocket connects and I have to wait 5-10 seconds before any messages I send are interpreted properly by the server. Other times I can't send any messages at all, because they all end up as garbage. I believe this is a stunnel problem, but I am not certain. Does anybody have any experience with this? I would like a more predictable server if I can get it. Some more information: This occurs extensively in Chrome, not quite as much in FireFox, and never in Safari. The php server I am using is phpws http://code.google.com/p/phpws/ -- On the WebSocket connection, this server would sometimes detect that the header was only 1 byte in size, the first byte of the WebSockets header. I had to modify the server to flush the buffer ever time this occurred so that it would reliably connect.

• My linux server takes more than an hour to boot. Suggestions?

  I am building a CentOS 5.4 system that boots off a compact flash card using a card reader that emulates an IDE drive. It literally takes about an hour to boot. The ultra-slow part occurs when Grub is loading the kernel. Once that's done, the rest of the boot process only takes about a minute to get to a login prompt. Does anyone have any suggestions? I suspect that it may have to do with UDMA. Everything IDE-related in my BIOS seems to checkout. The read performance hdparm is telling me 1.77 MB/s. Ouch! • Sun2Oracle: Upgrading from DSEE to the next generation Oracle Unified Directory - webcast follow up

  Thanks to all of the guest speakers on our Sun2Oracle webcast: Steve from Hub City Media, Albert from UCLA and our own Scott Bonell. During the webcast, we tried to answer as many questions as we could, but there were a few that we needed a bit more time to answer.  Albert from UCLA sent me the following information: Alternate Directory EvaluationWe were happy with Sun DSEE. OUD, based on the research we had done, was a logical continuation of DSEE.  If we moved away, it was to to go open source. UCLA evaluated OpenLDAP, OpenDS, Red Hat's 389 Directory. We also briefly entertained Active Directory. Ultimately, we decided to stay with OUD for the Enterprise Directory, and adopt OpenLDAP for the non-critical edge directories.HardwareFor Enterprise Directory, UCLA runs 3 Dell PowerEdge R710 servers. Each server has 12GB RAM and 2 2.4GHz Intel Xeon E5 645 processors. We run 2 of those servers at UCLA's Data Center in a semi active-passive configuration. The 3rd server is located at UCLA Berkeley. All three are multi master replicated. At run time, the bulk of LDAP query requests go to 1 server. Essentially, all of our authn/authz traffic is being handled by 1 server, with the other 2 acting as redundant back ups.

• OSX 10.6 integration into NIS/netgroup/automount infrastructure

  I have an existing infrastructure where accounts are maintained under NIS (yp) with no local unix accounts. Also, all the standard maps including hosts, mail aliases, netgroups, etc...are maintained in this form. Extensive use of the UNIX/Linux automounter with items scattered over the network on NFS servers. There are NO ACLs on any local or shared files. All mail needs to use basically the nullclient sendmail configuration feeding into a different system. I now have a requirement to integrate an Apple OSX 10.6 system into this environment and make it run seamlessly. My initial reading and second-hand information seems to indicate that this may not be possible on the native OSX 10.6 system. I'm concerned. Any ideas as to how to accomplish this task and make everybody happy? Thanks PS: I have never used an Apple OSX system.

• How does SSMS and SQL Server Licensing work?

  Could not get a efficient enough answer from MSFT or some of their vendors. Trying to determine exactly how the licensing works before dropping the money on it. Looking to get Server/CAL. We will have the server at our datacenter and then be using SSMS remote on each developers computer. That is, installing SSMS on all developers machine. I am not familiar with MSFT licensing (postgresql & mysql). If I were to pay for the server license and 5 CALs does that mean we can install SSMS locally on each machine. Does each CAL have a specific lic. # that is entered when installing SSMS? We were messing with just the trial edition and the only way I know of installing SSMS is using the full sql server install and choosing only SSMS, it still requires a license number. Any information would be very useful.

• SharePoint 2010 Licensing Costs

  We will be implementing a public-facing website in SharePoint 2010 and I have a few questions regarding licensing: Is there any (relatively) reliable pricing information available for SharePoint 2010? What about rumors? What edition of SharePoint 2010 would be appropriate for a publicly facing website (in 2007, you needed Enterprise for this, but it seems that WCM functionality is included in Standard in 2010)? What would be a reasonable number to budget for SharePoint 2010 licensing for a publicly facing website? Note: I have tried asking Microsoft directly. Unless you are a volume license customer, they direct you to a reseller (like CDW). Unfortunately, none of the resellers have the pricing for 2010 yet. The sku isn't even in their system. I was able to get in touch with the Microsoft Pre-Sales team and they confirmed that the price list will for 2010 will be published on May 3rd (or thereabouts), but they weren't able to give me a price. They have been ignored, or old ones used instead. Initially I thought that for whatever reason the repositories were down, so I switched from the Canada server to the main server. I still got the same error. I also tried installing some things from the ubuntu software center. Funny thing is, that worked fine and I was able to successfully download and install software from the software center, so it seems that only update manager can't access the repositories. I have searched for and found similar cases (relating to ubuntu 12.10), but most of those cases involved ppa's, and I don't use any ppa's. Help would be appreciated. Thanks.

• Unable to Get IIS Response Times with Hyperic Monitoring Tool

  We have a very large .NET application (vendor) that I am trying to gather performance metrics for using Hyperic. In general I wanted to be able to report response times for each of the components within the application, which include: Web Services ASP.NET Pages MSMQ I am currently unable to successfully monitor the response times for IIS on my windows machines. I have successfully auto-discovered them and I am getting diagnostic information, but am not getting back the response times. After looking online at what other people are seeing, I found that I am missing a tab for the response times which is usually next to the metrics tab. Also, when I look at the configuration screen for IIS I do not see a field which enables me to specify where the log files are located at. Please note that my logs are located at e:\LogFiles\ instead of the usual location because our IT staff doesn't allocate much space for the C: drive. Please note that I have the MSMQ monitors up and running great. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Jeremy

  I'm getting this error when trying to use xmodmap to get rid of caps lock: $ xmodmap -e 'clear Lock' X Error of failed request: BadValue (integer parameter out of range for operation) Major opcode of failed request: 118 (X_SetModifierMapping) Value in failed request: 0x17 Serial number of failed request: 8 Current serial number in output stream: 8 I'm running xfce on Maverick "10.10" Meercat. This problem did not occur before I added the Keyboard Layouts applet to a panel; before doing that, I was able to run my xmodmap script to swap Esc and CapsLock: !Remap Caps_Lock as Escape remove Lock = Caps_Lock keysym Caps_Lock = Escape It may be relevant that I chose alt-capslock as the keyboard switch combo in the Keyboard Layouts preferences. I've had a similar problem before, on a different machine, running openbox. On that machine, this problem started when I upgraded to Lucid, and has persisted in Maverick (release 10.10). I reported a bug in xorg. However, it remains unclear whether it's really a problem with xorg, or if I'm just doing something wrong with my configuration. Have other people experienced this problem? Can someone shed some light on what's going on here? It seems there are quite a few layers involved, and I don't understand any of them particularly well, so any information would be helpful. update I've discovered that the problem is specifically triggered by adding the Canada layout variant "Multilingual" (ca-multix). If I instead add the variant "Multilingual (first part)", the problem does not occur. I think this will probably end up being a usable workaround, but I don't yet know what the difference between these variants is. I've filed a freedesktop issue, and am commenting on a related ubuntu issue.

Now you can fix that small problem using the wonderful Chromify-OSD extension created by Marco Ceppi. Once you get the extension installed you can give it a quick test run using the link and information we have listed below. • Cisco ASA - VPN and Hairpinning....

  Hi, We have 2 sites that will be linked by a IPSEC VPN between 2 Cisco ASAs: Site 1 8Mb ADSL Connection Cisco ASA 505 Site 2 2Mb SDSL Connection Cisco ASA 505 Basically, both sites need access to a service at the end of another IPSEC VPN, Site 3, which I plan to terminate at Site 2. This is due to the way the service is sold - it's billed per gateway. So if both Site 1 and Site 2 had their own VPN connection to Site 3, it would cost us twice as much... Anyway, my idea is to have all traffic from Site 1 destined for Site 3 to go via the VPN between Site 1 and Site 2. The end result being all traffic that hits Site 3 has come via Site 2. I understand this is known as hairpinning but I'm struggling to find a great deal of information on how this is setup. So, firstly, can anyone confirm that what I'm trying to achieve is possible and, secondly, can anyone point me in the direction of an example of such a configuration? Many Thanks.

• Joining computers from workgroup to active directory

  I have several computers at my office that I want to put on our domain. These computers currently are used by employees with local computer accounts and they have information stored under these accounts. When I join their computer to the domain how would or could I keep their current computer accounts and add them to the Active Directory so they could log in as usual access the network resources? Is this possible or do I need to just start from scratch on all this with their accounts and locally stored files? We are using Windows 2008 R2 and all systems being added have the Windows 7 pro or higher. All I want to really do is add the systems to the domain and have their accounts in the Active Directory so they can log in, access files which are already on their computer, and use network reosoures. If I can add their computer and then add same username and password to Active Directory to get this all to work that would be fine. I am just looking for minimal impact on the user really to get this done.
