• How to gain understanding of large systems? [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: How do you dive into large code bases? I have worked as a developer developing C/C++ applications for mobile platforms (Windows Mobile and Symbian) for about six years. About a year ago, however, I changed job and currently work with large(!) enterprise systems with high security and availability requirements, all developed in Java. My problem is that I am having a hard time getting a grip on the architecture of the systems, even after a year working with them, and understanding systems other people have built has never been my strong side. The fact that I haven't worked with enterprise systems before doesn't exactly help. Does anyone have a good approach on how to learn and understand large systems? Are there any particular techniques and/or patterns I should read up on?

• Can I stop battery charging at say 80% and switch to AC?

  While I was looking for a battery management utility for my Dell E5420, I came to read this post - How can I limit battery charging to 80% capacity? . Sofar, I haven't found one that relates to my laptop. So, I wonder now if any battery manager utility can be found for my laptop specified above. I would be happy if someone could point me if such utility is available under Ubuntu 12.04 that can stop charging a battery at a certain percentage and to ONLY use A/C mode. Again, to start using battery mode when the A/C is off or when the battery level reaches at certain level. Thanks for all your help. Elim.

• Using a texture as an integer array (OpenGL 3.3, shader version 3.3)

  I'm trying to have something like an integer array uniform for my fragment shader (I only need read access). Since it's a fairly large chunk of data (not so large that uploading it in every frame would be impossible, but enough to make me want to rather not do it). Essentially I want to just pass it a uniform telling the shader where this "array" is. I believe I can use a 1D texture for this, but I don't know how (actually, I don't know how to do many things because I just can't seem to find a reference for GLSL 3.3, I only ever find references for the C API). This sounds like a rather basic question and I'm sure it's been answered already somewhere, but I keep searching and can't quite find what I'm looking for.

• Basic/research RTS engine/model

  Does a basic/research RTS engine/model exist that can be used as a basis for further experimentation/research? I'd like to avoid reinventing the wheel if possible. I'm aware of Spring Engine and Stratagus, but those are real game engines and may not be the best to experiment with and learn from. Ideally the docs for the model would answer questions like: How exactly do units move? (constant velocity? constant acceleration? constant force?) How is pathfinding handled? Does every grid cell become an A* graph node (may be expensive)? Does it consider threats? How are groups handled? (w.r.t pathfinding and movement) How is combat handled? I'm mostly interested in the low-level model details (for now), not the graphics etc. I've read a lot of the other quesions (and answers/references) tagged RTS but I haven't found my answer yet.

  I need help in setting up Zend framework on my PC. I am using XAMPP on Windows 7. I read tutorials and did what they suggested but don't know why it is not running. I need stepwise help. I have downloaded Zend version 1.11.13 and extracted the contents in a C drive folder. I have also set up environment variables and also made proper changes in php.ini file. But still not working. • Creating Java EE Projects with Maven

  I've been developing Java EE web apps with Eclipse for about a year. My employer doesn't use Maven, but the more I read about it, the more convinced I am that Maven + Hudson will be greatly beneficial for us. First, though, I have to become comfortable with those technologies in my spare time, so that I can create a proof-of-concept. Right now, I'm still a Maven newbie. Is there a set of best practices for creating Java EE web apps with Maven? For example, I could create a project with a basic archetype and then add all of the necessary JARs by putting dependencies in the POM for the servlet container, EJB, EclipseLink, etc... That might work, but it might not be the best way to do it. I'd greatly appreciate any guidance that you could provide on this topic.

• Making a sldprt to PDB file converter?

  I wanted to create a parser that can read a solidworks file and turn it into a protein data bank file. This has already been done in a program called DiamondCAD. http://www.zyvex.com/Research/DiamondCAD.html I waant to make a parser that can parse the data and then visualize it the same way as DiamondCAD. I have downloaded and opened solidworks files before and they make no sense to me with never before seen symbols and looks like ancient writing. Does anyone know how a sldprt. file is structured and how it can be parsed into a PDB file? (A software called VMD converts a PDB to Obj. file so it is proof of concept)

  I am currently working as an SDET(Software devlopment Engineer in Test). I have been doing some programming in C# as my job needs. I want to expand my knowledge and experience by creating some simple tools and applications of my own. Consider this like academic projects that are created by students at the end of their course . The idea is to have a practical knowledge on the subjects that I have a theoritical knowledge about. For Eg - I have read about multithreading and have worked on the examples but I do not have a grip over the concepts. In order to get a good grip over the concepts I want to work over some projects involving multithreading, starting with a simple one. Similarly other concepts like REST/SOAP web services using WCF.   I remember when I learnt PHP, it was suggested that I code a simple blog or a forum after reading the language fundamentals and syntax. I was told/read that this would cover everything that I would learn about PHP in a beginners book. This advice was out there in a number of places, and after following and working with PHP it seems quite good advice. I am now learning Java, and reading the book Thinking in Java by Bruce Eckel. I wonder if there is any such set of similar, small projects that I could take up, that would cover all the essentials and most of what is covered in the book. Thanks.

• Ubuntu Windows Installer - Firewall

  I installed Ubuntu with the Windows installer to use it along side. I could not find anything to activate a firewall so I thought its inbuilt and running. However now I read that I have to activate it manually? The command that was shown actually didnt promt any repsonse. Is it that the Windows installer version does not have that. Also my greatest concern is that I was without firewall protection for 2-3 weeks and I am using alot of public networks (university and dorm(only cable but still)). Thanks in advance.

• Kindle App Available for WP7!

  It’s finally here: the Kindle app for Windows Phone 7! Finally we can have our books on the go as well! It’s not sitting atop the “new” list on the WP7 marketplace though. I had to go to the Books section of the marketplace, and there its set to the top spot of free apps. I’m going to read the next chapter in my current book on it to see what the experience is like. After playing quickly with it, here’s some observations: - You flip pages going left to right, not up and down. No setting to change this if you don’t like it. - Good options for changing font size, background colour, and setting bookmarks. - *No* option for highlighting though. However, previous highlights do show up and you can review notes made in other programs Still, for a free Kindle reader and the ability to catch up on books wherever on the phone, so far so good!

• AHCI, Power Mode S3 and HPET 64bit - please help with these settings!

  my problem is the that for a Hackintosh (unofficial PC running OS X) I needed to set AHCI, Power Mode S3 and HPET 64bit. Now, I want to install Ubuntu (when 12.04 comes out) and was wondering if these settings will be right to use for Ubuntu. I read that AHCI is how the hard disks are accessed, Power Mode S3 is how suspend works with the RAM but couldn't figure out if using HPET 64bit makes any difference than HPET 32bit. What I would like is an explanation of what these BIOS settings do and what is best for Ubuntu. Thank you very much

• Is this a reliable method of parsing glGetShaderInfoLog()?

  I want to get a list of errors and their line numbers so I can display the error information differently from how it's formatted in the error string and also to show the line in the output. It looks easy enough to just parse the result of glGetShaderInfoLog(), look for ERROR:, then read the next number up to :, and then the next, and finally the error description up to the next newline. However, the OpenGL docs say: Application developers should not expect different OpenGL implementations to produce identical information logs. This makes me worry that my code may behave incorrectly on different systems. I don't need them to be identical, I just need them to follow the same format. So is there a better way to get a list of errors with the line number separate, is it safe to assume that they'll always follow the "ERROR: 0:123:" format, or is there simply no reliable way to do this?

• How can I disable as much "flair" as possible in Unity?

  I'm running Ubuntu 11.10 from a fresh install on a somewhat aged computer, so I have some speed problems. But since I do want to use the new cool way to work with things that Unity introduces I do not want to fiddle with getting another desktop environment. My idea is to disable as much flair as possible, but there are tonnes of options that I do not understand or have the time to read up on when I launch CompizConfig Settings Manager. Which of these could safely be disabled? Are there other places where performance could be gained by disabling things? So how can I make the whole thing a little more snappy?

• Cost vs. Fun - Dilemma about learning a serverside language [closed]

  I want to learn a new server-side language. I already know Java. I'm fascinated by Scala, have read about it a lot, and want to get practical experience. But I also have some concerns of practical nature - I want to do the backend for many small, non-profit apps, and pay the lowest price for hosting possible. I also want that other people can easily contribute to these apps, if applicable. This leads me in PHP's direction. But I don't like PHP and would like to use these small projects to learn Scala instead. You see the problem, I don't want to pay more money each month, from my own pocket, for hosting. But I want to use these projects to learn Scala. Is there a practical solution for this?

• How should i learn to make a game in c++ [on hold]

  I been having a lot of trouble making a game by myself in c++. I know c++, I know how to implement anything I just don't know how to make all the classes work into a game it just turn into a lot of useless coding and the game never get off the basic drawing, input etc. I read sfml game developemt and the choice the author make are working and I say to myself "I would have never thought of making a scene node class and doing x that way" I just think I can't put my thoughts into working classes and make them communite the right way and make it work.   Downloaded 12.04.2. Made CD. Machine boots from CD as expected. Installed onto HD. Upon reboot, "Read error" message appears. Upon booting from CD, the HD appears as expected: One partition for Ubuntu, taking up about 12 gig, the rest empty. Lather, rinse, repeat five times. • Decrementing/Incrementing loop variable inside for loop. Is this code smell?

  I have to read lines from a text file in sequential order. The file is a custom text format that contains sections. If some sections are out of order, I would like to look for the starting of the next valid section and continue processing.
