• Can I make Terminal.app open different profiles with shortcut like iTerm?

  I've been using iTerm for a while, but I switched back to Terminal.app in Snow Leopard due to the Visor plugin. Most of thing works pretty well after I switched to Terminal.app, except in iTerm, I can create different profiles and assign each profile with key shortcut. The advantage of this setup is that I can have non-transparency and transparency profile. If I need to look up a command on the background, I can start a transparency shell, and vice versa. I was thinking to use Mac built-in "Application shortcut" in System preference. Though, I realize in Terminal.app, the "New Window" and "New Tab" have the same profile names, so the Application shortcut is confused and I can't assign a shortcut to it... Any thought on how to change menu name on Terminal (or even better, any application?) Thanks for your help.

• MIX 2010 Covert Operations Day 4

  The Microsoft Azure Cloud is looking pretty solid compared to just a few months ago.  The storage mechanisms in the cloud now are blobs, drives, tables, and queues.  Also, not to forget, is SQL Azure.  I won’t dive too much into that, as most will know what SQL Server is, and SQL Azure is pretty much just a hosted SQL Server instance. The blobs are generally geared toward holding binary type data, images and those types of things.  The tables are huge key value type stores.  The drives are VHD, which are virtual hard drives.  The queues are just queues used for workflow and also to store messages back and forth in a queue. These methods are accessible via REST, which makes application development against the storage services extremely easy.  This is a big plus point as REST services are a preferred way to connect and interact with data storage.  It also sets up Silverlight as a prime framework to utilize services. Day 4 I pretty much dedicated to reviewing these cloud services and finishing up work related development.  With that, I'm wrapping up my MIX 2010 blog coverage.  Now back to your regularly scheduled programming. As an architect I need to be a jack of all trades.  This is what helps me to bring the big picture of a project into focus for developers with different skills to accomplish the goals of the project. It is a key when the mix technologies crosses Windows, Unix and Mainframe with different languages and databases.  The larger the company that the project is for the more likely this scenario will arise. As a consultant and a developer I need to have specialized skills in order to get the job done efficiently.  if I have a SharePoint or Windows Phone project knowing the object model details and possible roadblocks of the technology allow me to stay within budgets as well as better advise the client on technology decisions. What is the solution?  Constant learning and associating with developers who specialize in a variety of technologies is the best thing you can do.  You may have thought you were done with classes when you left college, but in this industry you need to constantly be learning new products and languages.  The ultimate answer is you must generally specialize.  Learn as many subject areas as possible, but go deep when ever you can.  Sleep is overrated.  Good luck. del.icio.us Tags: software development,software architecture,specialization,generalist

• WEP authentication suddenly failing in Ubuntu

  I'm running Ubuntu 9.10 and after a recent reboot, I'm now unable to authenticate to wireless networks using WEP encryption. I can connect fine to open networks (no idea about WPA). When trying to connect via WEP, I'm continually prompted for the network key, which I know I have entered correctly (and should have been/is saved in my keyring anyway). Everything had been working fine until the reboot. No updates had been installed or configuration changes made. Hardware-wise, everything looks fine (http://pastebin.org/113777), and the fact that connecting to an open network works just fine leads me to think this is a software issue. I just don't know where to begin fixing it. Any insights would be greatly appreciated.

It won’t make you any less bored though. Convert a Row to a Column (or backwards) The first thing you’ll need is a column or a row of information that you want to convert into the opposite. For our example, we’ve got this set of data that we created by using the Auto Fill options in Google Docs. Now in another cell, you’ll need to use the TRANSPOSE function, which you can use by simply typing in the following: =TRANSPOSE( And then selecting the cells with the mouse, or manually typing in the range of cells you want to copy. • Laptop screen brightness stuck

  I can no longer adjust the brightness of my laptop screen, it's stuck at the lowest. In Linux, the brightness adjustment keys (Fn + F4/F5) still work, since a brightness popup shows and the meter bar changes, but it does this in a strange way. Starting at 100%, each successive press of the "lower brightness" button moves the bar to: 67% 50% 0% 26% 12% Or another random pattern like that. The problem is not Linux however, since I can't change the brightness from Windows (7) either. Where do I even begin to look? Since the problem does not seem be OS-specific, I've searched in the BIOS, but it has no option like that. How did this happen? I think it's been this way since when I lowered the brightness to 0%, then pressed the "lower brightness" key again. Not sure about that though.

• Drobo not mounting. Disk repair doesn't work either.

  Hi, While transferring data to my 2nd gen Drobo power went out. Now my Drobo is not mounting to my OS X 10.6.3 I have tried Disk Repair and this error message appears: Verify and Repair volume “disk1s2” Checking Journaled HFS Plus volume. Invalid key length Invalid record count Catalog file entry not found for extent The volume could not be verified completely. Volume repair complete.Updating boot support partitions for the volume as required.Error: Disk Utility can’t repair this disk. Back up as many of your files as possible, reformat the disk, and restore your backed-up files. I tried DiskWarrior too but it doesn't work either. It gives me that I need more memory to continue and software shuts down. Any one know solution to this one?

• best practice with memcache/php - multi memcache nodes

  So I am working on a web app - that has to be built for scalability. It stores frequent MySQL querys into the cache. I have pretty much everything built and ready to go - but I am concerned on best practices on handling where to cache the data. I've talked to a few people and one of them suggested to split each key/value across all the memcache nodes. Meaning if i store the example: 'somekey','this is the value' it will be split across lets say 3 memcache servers. Is that a better way? or is memcache more built on a 1 to 1 relationship?. For example. store value on server A till it faults out - go to server B and store there. that is my current understanding from the research I have done and past experience working with memcache. Could someone please point me in the right direction in this and let me know which way is best or if I completely have this mixxed up. Thanks

• Advices fo starting a video game design career

  I'm 24 and have a passion for video games and game-design. I've decided I want to design video games as my career. I have no experience with designing video games or coding but I'm interested and willing to learn. I want a job at any level but what would I need to land a job? I have no college experience and I have no money. What is a cheap school, or do I really need to go to school for this, or can I learn on my own? Is it possible to do this with no money? I'm literally broke but I want this so bad I feel like its the only career I'll enjoy. I want to call up company's and ask them what they are looking for in someone they want to hire, is that a good idea? Also I don't know the history of video game design and I don't want to sound like a dummy when someone says something about this field or talks about a famous designer and I have no idea who they're talking about. So what is key info when it comes to this field and where should I find it? Hopefully some of you guys and girls can help me out: I know in the future I will create something everyone will enjoy and you guys will remember when you gave me advice and I will always remember you guys for helping me. I usually add this to a partial and include the partial in my layouts. "flash", :id = flash_type % "text/javascript" do % setTimeout("new Effect.Fade('');", 10000); This will wrap the flash message in a div with class=‘flash’ and id=‘error’, ‘notice’ or ‘warn’ depending on the flash key specified.The value ‘10000’ is the time in milliseconds before the flash will disappear. In this case, 10 seconds.This function looks pretty good and little javascript stunts like this can help make your site feel more professional. It’s also worth bearing in mind though, not everybody can see well or read as quickly as others so this may not be suitable for every application.Update:As Mitchell has pointed out (see comments below), it may be better to set the flash_type as the div class rather than it’s id. If there is the possibility that you’ll be showing more than one flash message per page, setting the flash_type as the div id will result in your HTML/XHTML code becoming invalid because the unique intentifier will be used more than once per page.Here is a slightly more complex version of the method shown above that will hide all divs with class ‘flash’ after a time delay, achieving the same effect and also ensuring your code stays valid with more than one flash message! • Input handling between game loops

  This may be obvious and trivial for you but as I am a newbie in programming I come with a specific question. I have three loops in my game engine which are input-loop, update-loop and render-loop. Update-loop is set to 10 ticks per second with a fixed timestep, render-loop is capped at around 60 fps and the input-loop runs as fast as possible. I am using one of the Javascript frameworks which provide such things but it doesn't really matter. Let's say I am rendering a tile map and the view of which elements are rendered depends on camera-like movement variables which are modified during key pressing. This is only about camera/viewport and rendering, no game physics involved here. And now, how can I handle input events among these loops to keep consistent engine reaction? Am I supposed to read the current variable modified with input and do some needed calculations in a update-loop and share the result so it could be interpolated in a render-loop? Or read the input effect directly inside the render-loop and put needed calculations inside? I thought interpreting user input inside an update-loop with a low tick rate would be inaccurate and kind of unresponsive while rendering with interpolation in the final view. How it is done properly in games overall?

  If you use Sleep Mode on your PC, have you ever noticed that moving your mouse will wake the computer from sleep mode? If you would prefer to only have the PC wake up when you hit a key instead, there’s a simple tweak. Just type Mouse into the start menu search box, or the Control Panel search box, and then open up the Mouse Properties panel. Find the Hardware tab, select your mouse in the list, and then click the Properties button. You’ll have to click the “Change settings” button before you can see the Power Management tab… And now, you can uncheck the box from “Allow this device to wake the computer”.   Is it really possible to invoke a context menu using a keyboard shortcut instead of clicking the right/alt mouse button in OS X? In particular, I would like a menu-key-like feature in OS X. I am wondering whether there is an additional third party software that provides such feature. Please not that the Mouse Keys feature is not an option as I don't want to depend on the position of the mouse cursor. • Why does SEO based code tips not appear to affect ranking?

  I've been researching various methods for SEO where pages have precise titles, keywords are highlighted with h tags and tick the many boxes stated in good page mark up for SEO. However when looking at some top ranked search sites on google for key terms they have terrible SEO based mark up. Really long page titles, no tags, limited appearance of keywords in the text and so on. SEO analysis services rate them lower than other sites, yet these sites rank really high. Even with a low number of back-links they are high, so I don't understand how these sites earn the position when they appear inferior to those below them which have better mark up and links. I don't want to cause trouble my mentioning sites or keywords etc. but looking in google at 'executive search' the roughly 5th placed site makes no sense why it should be highly rank, especially with all the added .swfs. The same applies for the top of 'Japan Executive Search'. My main point is that these sites seem to not have all the important structural rules stated in seo page rating applications and general suggested best practice, nor do they show large back-links. It makes me feel like there is no point bothering to write decent mark up if it really doesn't matter. Can anyone explain how sites with such mark-up, and low back-links can outrank well written and structured sites with greater linkage? Sorry if this is a fuzzy question, I want to avoid singling out any sites for example, but it really has me perplexed that sites which appear to ignore the suggested best practices rank so well.

• Memory consumption of each accept() call on server running on Windows 2008 [migrated]

  I've written a simple and small server application on Windows 2008 that just accepts connections and does nothing else. I am doing memory footprint assessment of socket calls, What I found that each connection (after accept()) consumes at least 2.5 KB of memory. Interestingly, the memory is not consumed by the process that has accept() call but it consumed by a OS process. I believe it might be because of data structures being created inside OS for each connection. Now, I have two key questions: Is it possible by any means to reduce this memory footprint (by changing any parameters, configuration etc) ? If yes how ? (Because 2K for each connection would be too much if we planning server to accept millions of connections) If my server is intended to accept million connections, is it good idea to use Windows 2008 ? or shall I switch to some other OS? Please advice me.

• How to add chrome bookmarks to Windows 7 favorites folder (where IE favorites live)

  I just switched to Windows 7 and love the taskbar and library features. If I make a desktop shortcut to a webpage, then it becomes searchable from the taskbar (i.e., press the Win/meta key and type the shortcut's name and it pops up). The IE bookmarks/favorites already come with shortcuts in your "Favorites" folder. Can I programatically do this with my chrome shortcuts? My first thought was to export bookmarks to IE, but I can't find an option in IE that allows me to export bookmarks/favorites as shortcuts. Thanks!

• Windows 7 Stopped Using hosts file for DNS Resolution

  I am running Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit. Starting today, I noticed that DNS resolution is not reading my %SYSTEMROOT%\System32\drivers\etc\hosts file. I say this because I added two new entries to the file and when I run 'nslookup' on the command line, they don't resolve. Further, just trying to resolve 'localhost' results in my primary DNS server being queried. I've read several threads that suggest that the file might have been corrupted and to move it aside and create a new one. I've done that, and no improvement. Is there some sort of registry key that controls the sequence of resources used for DNS resolution (similar to nsswitch.conf on UNIX)? What else could be causing this? Thanks in advance.
