• Need help with a conditional SELECT statement

  I've got a stored procedure with a select statement, like this: `SELECT author_ID, author_name, author_bio FROM Authors WHERE author_ID in (SELECT author_ID from Books) ` This limits results to authors who have book records. This is the Books table: Books book_ID INT author_ID INT book_title NVARCHAR featured_book BIT What I want to do is conditionally select the ID of the featured book by each author as part of the select statement above, and if none of the books for a given author are featured, select the ID of the first (top 1) book by the author from the books table. How do I approach this?

• How can I share Configuration Settings across multiple projects in Visual Studio?

  Ok I know this may be a design issue, so I would love to have remarks on that as well. I have a Visual Studio web application solution. I have three projects as UserInterface, BusinessLogic and DataAccess. I had to store some user defined settings and I created configSections in the config file. I access these configSections through classes which inherit from .NET's ConfigurationSection base class. So in short for every project I had a separate configSection and for that corresponding configSection I had a class in that project inheriting from ConfigurationSection to access the config section settings. This works all sweet. But the problem arises if there is any setting which I need to use across multiple projects. So If I need to use a setting defined in UserInterface project configSection in, let say, BusinessLogic project I have to actually make a copy of that setting in the BusinessLogic's configSection. This ends up having the same setting copied across multiple configSections. Isn't this a bit too redundant?

• Unit testing a SQL code generator

  The team I'm on is currently writing code in TSQL to generate TSQL code that will be saved as scripts and later run. We're having a little difficulty in separating our unit tests between testing the code generator parts and testing the actual code that they generate. I've read through another similar question, but I was hoping to get some specific examples of what kind of unit test cases we might have. As an example, let's say that I have a bit of code that simply generates a DROP statement for a view, given the view schema and name. Do I just test that the generated code matches some expected outcome using string comparisons and then in a later integration or system test make sure that the drop actually drops the view if it exists, does nothing if the view doesn't exist, or raises an error if the view is one that we are marking as not allowing a drop? • Delay after pressing a button

  After I press a button, Android parse a JSON file and pick the info it needs. Until yesterday, I was using an external library created by a user and it worked perfectly. But now, I don't want to depend on him, so I've searching info about Google's GSON. I've implemented this library with no problem, but now, after pressing the button that opens a new activity there's a delay. This delay is due to the connection and parsing that are done before the activity shows. How can I force the app to wait the Internet connection until de Activity is shown? It's a lil bit uncomfortable because after pressing the button, it seems that the app has frozen, but after all data is loaded, the new activity appears. Thank you in advance!

  Hi guys, I am developing some small little application that sits on the screen and on top of all window and flies around the screen, could be a bird or a butterfly or a fish. But I have a little bit of problem. How do I redraw the background without my images included? or how do I copy the background (not the wallpaper) behind my form with image? is it possible to have a custom shaped form also? currently, the app looks like this the 2nd image with X is what I currently have (it has some sort of tearing) and it's supposed to be the 1st one with check mark.

• 'Array of arrays' in matlab?

  Hey, having a wee bit of trouble. Trying to assign a variable length 1d array to different values of an array, e.g. a(1) = [1, 0.13,0.52,0.3]; a(2) = [1, 0, .268]; However, I get the error: ??? In an assignment A(I) = B, the number of elements in B and I must be the same. Error in ==> lab2 at 15 a(1) = [1, 0.13,0.52,0.3]; I presume this means that it's expecting a scalar value instead of an array. Does anybody know how to assign the array to this value? I'd rather not define it directly as a 2d array as it is for are doing solutions to different problems in a loop Edit: Got it! a(1,1:4) = [1, 0.13,0.52,0.3]; a(2,1:3) = [1, 0, .268];

• Regular Expression find a phrase not inside an HTML tag

  Hi there, I'm struggling a bit with this regular expression and wondered if anyone was about to help me please? What I need to do is isolate the 1st phrase inside a string which is NOT inside an HTML tag. So the examples I have at the moment are: This is some test text about ITS for the ITS department. Also worth mentioning ABS as well I guess.ITS, ... and ... This is some ITS test text about ITS for the ITS department. Also worth mentioning ABS as well I guess So in the first example I want it to ignore the wrapped ITS and give me the ITS at the end of the 1st sentence. In the second example I want it to return the ITS at the start of the 2nd sentence. The aim is to replace these with my own custom wrapped acronym tags in a ColdFusion application I'm writing. • Is autoload thread-safe in Ruby 1.9?

  It seems to me that the Ruby community has been freaking out a little about autoload since this famous thread, discouraging its use for thread safety reasons. Does anyone know if this is no longer an issue in Ruby 1.9.1 or 1.9.2? I've seen a bit of talk about wrapping requires in mutexes and such, but the 1.9 changelogs (or at least as much as I've been able to find) don't seem to address this particular question. I'd like to know if I can reasonably start autoloading in 1.9-only libraries without any reasonable grief. Thanks in advance for any insights.

• How to determine what in my script is blocking my HTML rendering?

  I have a web application that uses quite a bit of JavaScript. When the page loads, it's very clear visually that something is blocking the rendering of a particular portion of the web site. This portion is generated by a Tabber Tabify JavaScript library. How can I determine what's blocking the HTML rendering specifically so that I can modify my code to prevent this blocking? Can I use Firebug, or some other tool, to walk through my HTML/JavaScript to determine where the HTML rendering is being blocked and if so, how? UPDATE: YSlow gives my web-application a score of "A" and Page Speed give a score of 94/100. UPDATE 2: The live site is linked below. http://www.uptownelite.com/index.uncompressed.html?city=Dallas,TX What I'm specifically referring too is the actual Tabs themselves being rendering (and NOT the panel content inside the tab panes). It seems strange to me that the Tab headings themselves are taking so long to generate on the first (empty cache) page load.

• Load page, wait, log any JavaScript errors to file?

  I would like to check a large number of HTML files with inline JavaScript for JavaScript errors. What I'm envisioning doing is this: Script a browser to load a given page, wait a few seconds, and finally check the browser logs. I'm unsure though both on how to script a browser to load a given page and on how to access the JavaScript error log. I think the type of errors I'm worried about should show up in any modern browser so I would just go with whatever makes it most convenient. I'd be working either under Mac OS X or Linux. Anybody already tackle a similar problem? I've thought a bit about hacking something together based on a unit testing framework -- generate a trivial (assertTrue(true)) test for each page and rely on the errors making it fail -- but I'm hoping for something more elegant. I have a table table_categories (id INT(11), cname VARCHAR(25),survey_id INT(11)) I want to retrieve the values for the column cname without duplication, that is distinct values but with all the values in the other column. id cname survey_id -- -------- --------- 1 Trader 2 2 Beginner 2 25 Human 1 26 Human 2 From the above example I want to retrieve distinct cnames with all the values of the survey_id. I don't want to use any programming language. Is there any way by using a single query. Please give me a solution in MySQL.

  hi folks, I asked a question a few days ago about how to customise the calendar extender of the ajaxcontroltoolkit library and got a response saying I should ditch the control kit for jQuery. I have to say I've heard jQuery being mentioned quite a bit and more importantly I've seen it as a requirement for an increasing number of web development job vacancies. I do like the ajaxcontroltoolkit with its simplicity and integration with Visual Studio. Does anyone have an opinion on the two of these? I'd love to hear from developers with experience with both these ajax solutions. -- Jonesy

• jQuery Address double load on init

  Hi all, bit of a jquery rookie here trying to get something to work. Basically I have a div with a class "nav" and inside that div is a nav list. I want to change the background-image of "nav" when hovering over an item in the navlist, so I made this unsuccesful effort: enter code here $(function(){ $("li#hover-first").mouseover(function(){ $("div.nav").removeClass("nav").addClass("navbg"); .mouseout(function(){$("div.nav").removeClass("navbg").addClass("nav"); }); So the idea is, once the first li item is hovered over, the div with classname "nav" has it's class removed and has "navbg" added (which has the alternate background image). Obviously this isn't working, so any help would be greatly appreciated...thanks.

• What tech stack/platform to use for a project?

  Hey guys, This is a bit of a weird meta-programming question, but I've realized that my new project doesn't need a full MVC framework, and being a rails guy, I'm not sure what to use now. To give you a gist of the necessary functionality; this website will display static pages, but users will be able to log in and 'edit their current plans'. All purchasing and credit card editing is being handled by a recurring payment subscriber, I just need a page to edit their current plan. All of that will be done through (dynamic) XML API calls, so no database is necessary. Should I stick with my typical rails/nginx stack, or is there something I could use that would lighten the load, since I don't need the Rails heft. I'm familiar with python and PHP but would prefer not to go that route. Is Sinatra a good choice here? tl;dr: What's a good way to quickly serve mostly static pages, preferably in Ruby, with some pages requiring dynamic XML rendering?

• @font-face and CSS3 working locally but not on hosting

  Hello chaps and chapettes, I've got a bit of a strange one for you (so to speak). I've devised a little 'coming soon' page for my site which, locally, (on a WAMP setup) is working flawlessly - in capable browsers (i.e. Chrome and Safari), the page looks fine and has a nice little CSS3 transition effect upon hover. And in other browsers, the page visibly looks (practically) identical and the hover effect still works, just without the transition. After uploading to my hosting, the site still looks fine and works fine in Chrome and Safari, but for some reason in Firefox, the @font-face declarations don't seem to have worked and in IE the layout is slightly different. I'm massively puzzled! The files are identical on my hosting to what I have locally. • How to visually represent file size

  This will be a bit subjective, I'm afraid, but I'd value the advice of the Collective. Our web application lists documents that users can download; standard file navigator stuff: Type Name Created Size ----------------------------------- PDF Doc 1 01/04/2010 15 KB PDF Doc 2 01/04/2010 15 MB Currently we list the file size as text, but I'd like to improve this by having some way of showing visually whether the file is tiny, normal or huge. The reason for this is so that users can scan the list quickly and spot files that are likely to take a long time downloading. My options currently are: Bigger font sizes for bigger files (drawback: the layout can become untidy) Icons (like a wi-fi signal strength indicator; drawback: harder to scan) Keep all sizes in KB so the number of zeroes indicates size (drawback: users have to calculate the "friendly" size in their heads) I know this is quite a minor thing, but I'd appreciate anyone's thoughts on the matter!

• Wrapper not resizing to full content size

  Hey guys, I have a div called #background. I have most of my content in it and I want it to resize when I add more content. As far as I know the way to do this is to assign it no height? I have done this in my layout.css file. As far as I can see, my #background doesnt close until after the last bit of content which is what I want, but it's not working. • Playing audio from a wav file in iPhone SpeakHere example

  I'm working with the iPhone SpeakHere example, and I would like to be able to play audio from either the mic (as in the example) or from a wav file. I have working code to play from a particular wav file, which looks like this: NSString *path = [[NSBundle mainBundle] pathForResource:@"basketBall" ofType:@"wav"]; AVAudioPlayer* theAudio=[[AVAudioPlayer alloc] initWithContentsOfURL:[NSURL fileURLWithPath:path] error:NULL]; theAudio.delegate = self; [theAudio play]; So I'm fine with actually getting the wav to play in the application (I can hook it up to a button, etc.) but I would like it to also behave the same way pushing the "Play" button does after recorded speech, in that it should be connected to the same visualization (which I have modified quite a bit, but essentially shows the current volume, among other things).   I want to create a headline (h2) with an image at the right-most area of the bounding box. I have the layout almost right except I can't push the image a little bit to the right of the element's bounding box -- how would I tweak my css so it is displayed correctly? • How to get DayNames from language only in .NET

  Assume that I only have a country code (en, de, fr) and I need to display the weekdays in this language. I know about RegionInfo and CultureInfo - but I can't find a solution. If I create a country info from (for an example) "en" I have no DateTime info in it. It would also be OK to just take the first matching Region. For an example en-US for en or de-DE for de. I don't know if there are differences in DayNames but I know there are some for the months. de-DE Februar - de-AT Feber -- anyhow I don't care. Event if it may be "a bit different" (to see Februar instead of Feber) - it is still German. And that's what I want to achive - get en an write Monday - get de and write Montag... Is there a way to create a region just from a language code?

• Ruby on Rails - where to write business logic while processing a request? (newbie)

  I am learning Ruby on Rails. I made a simple link like this: <%= link_to "Alex Link", alexes_path(@alex) %> then I routed it in routes.rb like this: resources :alexes get "home/index" then I am a bit unclear, but I think it goes to this part of the controller: def index #@alexes = Alex.all respond_to do |format| format.html # index.html.erb format.json { render json: @alexes } end end Am I correct that it goes to this part of the controller? Then nothing much happens and it goes to the next page which is index.html.rb under views\alexes So what I am wondering is - if I needed to do some business logic, would I write that in the controller snippet? Where inside the snippet? An example would be nice to take a look. Also, I would like to connect to a MongoDb database. Would I also write that in the middle of the controller? Thanks!
