• NTFS write speed really slow (<15MB/s)

  I got a new Seagate 4TB harddrive formatted with ntfs using parted /dev/sda > mklabel gpt > mkpart pri 1 -1 mkfs.ntfs /dev/sda1 When copying files or testing writespeed with dd, the max writespeed I can get is about 12MB/s. The harddrive should be capable of atleast 100MB/s. top shows high cpu usage for the mount.ntfs process. The system has a AMD dualcore. This is the output of parted /dev/sda unit s print: Model: ATA ST4000DM000-1F21 (scsi) Disk /dev/sda: 7814037168s Sector size (logical/physical): 512B/4096B Partition Table: gpt Number Start End Size File system Name Flags 1 2048s 7814035455s 7814033408s pri The used kernel is 3.5.0-23-generic. The ntfs-3g versions I tried are ntfs-3g 2012.1.15AR.1 (ubuntu 12.04 default) and the newest version ntfs-3g 2013.1.13AR.2. When formatted with ext4 I get good write speeds with about 140MB/s. How can I fix the writespeed?

• How do I make this nested for loop, testing sums of cubes, more efficient?

  I'm trying to iterate through all the combinations of pairs of positive long integers in Java and testing the sum of their cubes to discover if it's a Fibonacci number. I'm currently doing this by using the value of the outer loop variable as the inner loop's upper limit, with the effect being that the outer loop runs a little slower each time. Initially it appeared to run very quickly--I was up to 10 digits within minutes. But now after 2 full days of continuous execution, I'm only somewhere in the middle range of 15 digits. At this rate it may end up taking a whole year just to finish running this program. • USB keyboard not working under Windows 7 x64?

  I have two USB keyboards, one no-name cheap thing and an old Logitech. When I plug them in to my computer they pop up in Device Manager as an "Unknown device" and "USB-receiver", respectively. Both of them fail to install any drivers, neither automatically or through Windows Update. Both keyboards work perfectly on another computer I have with Windows Vista 32-bit. Can this be one of those cases where a device does not work in a 64-bit version of Windows? I doubt it though since I've never had that problem before with any device and I thought that basic things like keyboards would be kind of failsafe. I don't really know how to start debugging this issue. I've tried all the obvious, rebooting, changing the USB port, etc. Are there any generic x64 keyboard drivers you can use? Is there any way to find the manufacturer of the keyboard over USB? There is nothing written on it.

I'm wanting it to be nested inside the first branch under a name like, "types". I think my question has more to do with Php array manipulation, but I'm not the best with that. • Where to prompt for required file location at start of Win Forms application

  I have an application that uses a file to store its data. I store the location of the file in the app settings so have two tests at startup: Do I have a setting for the file and Does the file (if I have a setting) exist If I fail either test I want to prompt the user for the file location - the mechanics of the are not the problem, I can read and write the app settings, fire off dialogs and otherwise request the data. If the user refuses to choose a file (or at least a file location) I want to exit the app. My problem is where to do this i.e. at what point in the flow of code. In an ideal world you start the app, show a splash screen, load the main form and run from there... I'm looking for a general pattern that allows me to slot the test for parameters into the right place so that I can prompt the user for whatever (and allowing that I have to worry about the fact that my splash screen is currently topmost for my app). I appreciate that this is a bit vague so will update this with code as we go along.

• How can I have 2 ADO access methods use the same Transaction?

  I'm writing a test to see if my LINQ to Entity statement works.. I'll be using this for others if I can get this concept going.. my intention here is to INSERT a record with ADO, then verify it can be queried with LINQ, and then ROLLBACK the whole thing at the end. I'm using ADO to insert because I don't want to use the object or the entity model that I am testing. • Testing InlineFormset clean methods

  I have a Django project, with 2 models, a Structure and Bracket, the Bracket has a ForeignKey to a Structure (i.e. one-to-many, one Structure has many Brackets). I created a TabularInline for the admin site, so that there would be a table of Brackets on the Structure. I added a custom formset with some a custom clean method to do some extra validation, you can't have a Bracket that conflicts with another Bracket on the same Structure etc. The admin looks like this: class BracketInline(admin.TabularInline): model = Bracket formset = BracketInlineFormset class StructureAdmin(admin.ModelAdmin): inlines = [ BracketInline ] admin.site.register(Structure, StructureAdmin) That all works, and the validation works. However now I want to write some unittest to test my complex formset validation logic. • Azure Table Storage rejects an entity with a Property whose value is an Interface

  I have a type called "Comment" that I'm saving to Azure Table Storage. Since a comment can be about any number of other types, I created an interface which all of these types implement, and then put a property of type ICommentable on the comment. So Comment has a property called About of type ICommentable. When I try to save a Comment to Azure Table Storage, if the Comment.About property has a value, I get the worthless invalid input error. However, if there is no value for Comment.About, I have no problem. Why would this be? Comment.About is not the only property that is a reference type. For example, Comment.From is a reference type, but the Comment.About is the only property of a type that is an interface. • Server refusing access from every host except itself

  I have media content on a hosted server that I want to be accessed by another domain. In the configuration file, even if I "Allow from all," all hosts except itself will fetch the hosting company's generic landing page, which puzzles me. I test it with curl, with the command: curl -H "Host: anything.com" http://mydomain.com and it just shows the hosting company's page. If I do: curl -H "Host: mydomain.com" http://mydomain.com it will show my content. How do I allow other hosts to access my content? I thought it would work with "Allow" in .htaccess, but it doesn't.

Please review the following URL and make sure that it is spelled correctly. • Seeking suggestions on redesigning the interface

  As a part of maintaining large piece of legacy code, we need to change part of the design mainly to make it more testable (unit testing). One of the issues we need to resolve is the existing interface between components. The interface between two components is a class that contains static methods only. Simplified example: class ABInterface { static methodA(); static methodB(); ... static methodZ(); }; The interface is used by component A so that different methods can use ABInterface::methodA() in order to prepare some input data and then invoke appropriate functions within component B. Now we are trying to redesign this interface for various reasons: Extending our unit test coverage - we need to resolve this dependency between the components and stubs/mocks are to be introduced The interface between these components diverged from the original design (ie. a lots of newer functions, used for the inter-component i/f are created outside this interface class). The code is old, changed a lot over the time and needs to be refactored. The change should not be disruptive for the rest of the system. We try to limit leaving many test-required artifacts in the production code. Performance is very important and should be no (or very minimal) degradation after the redesign. Code is OO in C++. I am looking for some ideas what approach to take. Any suggestions on how to do this efficiently?

  I am trying to send an email using the following very standard code. However, I get the error that follow... The server response was: No such user here. This recipient email address definitely works. To make this account work I had to do some special steps in outlook. Specifically, I had to do change account settings - more settings - outgoing server - my outgoing server requires authentication & use same settings. I am wondering if there is some other strategy. I think the key here is that my host is Server Intellect and I know that some people on here use them so hopefully someone else has been able to get through this. I did talk to support but they said with coding issues I am on my own :o

• Mount a network drive when windows starts up without being logged in.

  Current Scenario: I have a NAS Box, and a Windows 2003 Server that our recording software is on (Security Cameras). The software stores the data on the NAS box. Currently someone has to be logged in with valid credentials in order to keep the drive mounted (e.g. domain admin). I know you can mount the drive with a batch file, but this stores credentials in clear text and is not a good solution. I am looking for another way to get the drive to mount on startup without someone having to be logged in. I do have a generic account setup that has access to read/write to the drive but can't log-in interactively, this is the account I would like to use to mount it if any. Any suggestions?

• Transferring DHCP using Windows Server Migration Tool - Why is Powershell is crashing on the import of the .mig file?

  I am migrating DHCP from a windows server 2003R2 DC to a Windows Server 2008R2 DC I've followed this video and its predecessor (Installing Windows Server Migration Tools) http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/video/migrating-dhcp-using-the-windows-server-2008-r2-migration-tools.aspx I went through everything smoothly until the last step. I have exported a .mig file with my DHCP configuration on the old 2003r2 server. I transferred this .mig file over to my 2008R2 server, when running the import command, it will appear to work for a minute or two and then I get a generic windows "Powershell has stopped working" error and I have to close the program. Under the problem details I see the following: FileVersionOfSystemManagementAutomation: 6.1.7600.16385 InnermostExceptionType: System.AccessViolationException OutermostExceptionType: System.AccessViolationException DeepestPowerShellFrame: unknown OS Version: 6.1.7600.2.0.0.272.7 LocaleID: 1033 Seems like there are permissions issues maybe? I am running powershell as an admin and am logged in to the server as a domain administrator. Any Ideas? Thanks

My files are as follows: --startup.lua require("foo") test("Testing", "testing", "one, two, three") --foo.lua foo = {} print("In foo.lua") function test(a,b,c) print(a,b,c) end This works fine when in my C++ compiler when accessed through some embed code, however when I attempt to use the same code in LuaEdit, it crashes on line 3 require("foo") with an error stating: module 'foo' not found: no field package.preload['foo'] no file 'C:\Program Files (x86)\LuaEdit 2010\lua\foo.lua' no file 'C:\Program Files (x86)\LuaEdit 2010\lua\foo\init.lua' no file 'C:\Program Files (x86)\LuaEdit 2010\foo.lua' no file 'C:\Program Files (x86)\LuaEdit 2010\foo\init.lua' no file '.\foo.lua' no file 'C:\Program Files (x86)\LuaEdit 2010\foo.dll' no file 'C:\Program Files (x86)\LuaEdit 2010\loadall.dll' no file '.\battle.dll' I have also tried creating these files prior to adding them to a solution and still get the same error. Is there some setting I'm missing? It would be great to have an IDE/debugger but it's useless to me if it can't run linked functions.

• Check if current Command Prompt was launched as the Administrator

  I am looking to write a script that takes user input, then makes system wide changes. I need this to be very generic, but simply put, at the top, I need it to check to see if it's being run 'As an Administrator'. If it's not, then I want to display a message to tell them that; if it is, I want it to continue on. Is there a constant way to verify this? I am not looking to start a new session as the Administrator, I just want to detect if it's currently run as admin

• Opening an oracle database crashes the service [SOLVED]

  I am experiencing a weird issue with Oracle where the service started fine after a crash. The database mount went fine as well. However, when I issue alter database open; command, the database does not open, gives a generic cannot connect to the database error & crashes the service. Oracle support has not seen this issue before so it's pretty scary. The fact that there are no logs that give any leads as to what could be causing this is also scary. I was wondering if good folks over at Server Fault had seen something like this or have some insights on things that I could try. It's Oracle 10g running on Windows Server 2003. Thanks, Ashish

• Need help upgrading MacBookPro3,1 RAM to 4GB.

  My questions are: 1) Where to buy it and what to buy? I have heard that this RAM is generic enough and it does not have to come from Apple. 2) Can I reuse my existing stick(s)? Would I have a single 2GB module, or 2 x 1GB modules? 3) If I have 2GB already, is it a good idea to have one old stick and one new one? Which one is better placed at the top and which one at the bottom? Let me know what questions you have. • How to set file associations and explorer options in one go?

  This has been itching me for quite a long time. When I come on a new computer with any version of Windows, I need to: un-hide file extensions set explorer default view to list instead of icons set the file extensions like h c cpp so they don't open Visual C++ (which can take up to 20 seconds!) each time I double click on them, opening them with something like Notepad++ instead. Isn't there some program to quickly set thoses options to something I want, like some standalone exe, or some generic registry file I can execute when I come on a new machine? I'm a developer and I can't believe I'm wasting so much time on those &*$%@# things.
