• SBS 2003 R2 install errors

  I just installed sbs2003 R2 as a learning lab box on my home network. The install seemed to take quit a while with a bit of shuffling between disks 4 and 5. The continue setup checklist showed the red x besides the exchange install and finally gave me an error about the "schema needing extending run, forest /adprep" and told me at the end that the install did not succeed. After a longer than normal reboot it comes up and seems to be OK. What logs do i need to check to see what went wrong? Should i reinstall and try burning the iso's to new media? cheers

  I have Kerberos-based authentication with Apache/2.2.3 (Linux/SUSE). When user is trying to open some url, browser ask him about domain login and password like in HTTP Basic Auth. If user cancel such request 3 times Apache returns 401 Authorization Required error page. My current virtual host config is <Directory /home/user/www/current/public/> Options -MultiViews +FollowSymLinks AllowOverride None Order allow,deny Allow from all AuthType Kerberos AuthName "Domain login" KrbAuthRealms DOMAIN.COM KrbMethodK5Passwd On Krb5KeyTab /etc/httpd/httpd.keytab require valid-user </Directory> I want to set nice custom 401 error page with some instructions for users. And I added such line in virtual host config: ErrorDocument 401 /pages/401 It works, when user can't authorize apache redirects him to my nice page. But Apache doesn't ask user login\password as it did before. I want this functionality and nice error page simultaneously! Is it possible to make it works properly?

• HP Photosmart 7450 Prints Noise On Windows 7 Pro 64-bit

  I have received a working (in its last location) HP Photosmart 7450 printer. I connected it up to my Windows 7 Pro 64-bit workstation, and the driver was (apparently) installed. The problem is that whenever I try to print from it -- test page, text from notepad, picture, whatever -- it spins through a half dozen sheets of paper, some of which have fractions of text on them, but most of which are either blank or have line noise printed on them. Noise similar to what was printed out on ye olde laserjet printers when the postscript interpreter failed. HP's web site only has a "use the included driver in Windows 7, be happy" instruction. The driver has been removed and added several times. The printer was previously attached to a XP Home computer and worked correctly without incident. Does anyone have any ideas for troubleshooting before I drop this printer in the river?

• Strange DNS problem [seems to be IPv6 issue]

  Hi, I'm experiencing strange problems with my Kubuntu 9.10 when doing DNS requests from various applications. The requests are extremely slow, so loading any pages in Firefox or Konqueror, doing package installations in Kpackagemanager and other apps is really painful, while for example Opera doesnt have any problems, and ping is normally fast as well for DNS pings. I checked the proxy settings of both the used applications as well as of the general system and there are none, so to me it doesn't seem as there was something inbetween.. Does anybody have an idea on what to check for possible problem sources or how to solve this ? I'm behind a DSL home router which does the DHCP (and works well with my other computer). Any kind of advice would be really helpful. Edit: It seems to be some kind of IPv6 problem, as I could get it to work by disabling IPv6 explicitly in Firefox. Is there a general solution to this ?

• Are copyright notices really required?

  Ever since I made my first web page 13 years ago I have followed the pattern of showing a copyright notice in the footer of each page. Over the years the format of this notice has changed in the following way; Copyright © <NAME> yyyy. All rights are reserved. Copyright © <NAME> yyyy © yyyy <NAME> © <NAME> This has generally mirrored the format used by Google. However, I recently noticed that they no longer display a copyright notice on their home page nor have one in their source code/meta tags. I see they still display it on most (if not all) other pages. I understand that Google are very keen to keep the word count down on their homepage, which could be the reason for this sacrafice, but my question is more general and relates to all websites. Since I've always just done it out of habit, I'm hoping someone can explain if/when I a copyright notice is actually required to protect your content and rights. Also, when it is required, is there a format in which the notice must adhere to in order to be valid?

  Please can you tell me what the technical differences are between the Fujitsu ScanSnap S300 and the S1300 scanners? S300 = http://www.fujitsu.com/emea/products/scanners/scansnap/tmpl_scanners_scansnap-S300.html S1300 = http://www.fujitsu.com/emea/products/scanners/scansnap/tmpl_scanners_scansnap-S1300.html The only difference I can see is that the S300 has a CCD Image Sensor and the S1300 has a CIS Image Sensor. Other than that, the resolutions, pages per minute and physical sizes of both models are exactly the same. If so, is there a reason why I would want the S1300 instead of the cheaper S300? I just want a scanner for duplex document scanning, for home use (documents, receipts, etc.).

• Dual-Boot Windows 7 and Ubuntu 12.04.1

  I installed Ubuntu 12.04.1 alongside Windows 7. I wanted to check out what it's all about. By the way, i actually like the interface a lot and the free office suite is very very nice. I love how they can save to the .docx as well. Onto the story: I installed it using this tutorial and I set it all up and everything and things were great. I used the EasyBCD 2.2 Tool and created an Ubuntu 12.04.1 entry and when I boot the computer the Windows 7 and Ubuntu 12.04.1 option show up. However, when I click Ubuntu it does not boot. It say and error and says I must put in the Windows CD to repair or something like this. Here's my system specs: ASRock Extreme4 (EUFI BIOS) Corsair Vengaence 2x4GB nVidia GeForce 9800GT i5-3570K 3.4GHz Corsair 620W Modular 500GB WD Caviar Blue I have no clue what could be wrong with it and I would love any assistance. I am willing to mess around and if something happens wrong I can just reinstall windows and it won't be a huge deal. Thank you very much! • Disk failure is imminent Laptop Hard drive ~5 months old

  There's another post about this, but I don't have enough 'points' to say anything on that thread. So I'll start my own ... with more details! My computer still boots, but gnome domain reports problems with HDD smart. This has been confirmed in the bios as it makes me press f1 to boot up now. I tried running HDD disk check in the bios, but it fails running the tests. As in, running the tests failed not that the tests themselves indicated a failed drive. • Win7 Prof. Computer won't wake on lan via Magic Packet from outside network

  Hi all. I just purchased a new computer running Windows 7 Professional x64. I'd like to save power by having it sleep after an hour, but I would also like to be able to Remote Desktop into it at my leisure. I set up a static IP and have port forwarding set up on the router. If the computer is awake, the RDP connection works just fine. I downloaded and installed Wake-On-Lan thanks to this article If I put my new computer to sleep and send the magic packet from my old computer inside of my home network it wakes up. If I do the same thing, however, from my work computer outside the network it does not. I figured the Firewall was blocking the incoming traffic, but nothing in the Windows Firewall logs points to this happening. I'm wondering if anyone has any suggestions or any tests I can run through in order to narrow down what the problem might be. Thanks in advance for any help you might be able to offer.

• Setting up a router as a DNS server only

  I have a Linksys WRT54GL router that I don't need anymore, since I had to buy a 3G capable router (Dovado 3GN). As I only have a 3G connection at home, I want to optimize it as much as possible. I want to setup a caching DNS server, including some blacklisting of ad domains. The router currently runs the DD-WRT firmware. Is it possible to use this router as an ordinary computer, running only a DNS server, disabling all other features such as DHCP, WLAN, etc? Connecting it to my other router, should I simply run a cable into the WAN-port of the Linksys router?

• Can't set Windows XP background

  I have a Windows XP (Home) machine with a very weird problem. I cannot set the background image properly. That is, I can go to Desktop, Background image, select a different one, but the background has still the same solid colour. Now if I kill explorer.exe, I can see the background image correctly, but starting explorer.exe gives me the solid colour background back again. If I go to Desktop, Customise Desktop, Web, there is a checkbox at the bottom called "Fix desktop icons" or something like this (not sure how it's called in the English version.) If I enable this checkbox, I can see the background, but the desktop icons are drawn with solid-colour backgrounds (even though I have the "draw icon labels transparently" option set.) If I disable the checkbox, I have no desktop background. Active Desktop is disabled. Any idea how to fix this and what might be the reason for this behaviour in the first place?

• How do I access shared folders on Ubuntu server from Mac OS?

  I have an old dell desktop running ubuntu 11.04, I also have samba installed on it. I'm trying to access the shared folders on the Ubuntu machine from my Mac, so I go into 'Finder', click on 'Go' and 'Connect to Server'. I type in the ip address of the ubuntu machine smb://xxx.xxx.x.xx and click connect, I can then see the list of shared folders from the ubuntu machine so I know its making a connection. But when I access the 'Music' folder I get an error message stating: There was an error connecting to the server "xxx.xxx.x.xx". Check the server name or IP address, and try again. Any thoughts anyone ? EDIT I have a external hard drive attached to the server, and the folders I'm trying to access are located on that external hard drive. The location of the folder is /media/HD-CELU2/test, so I think the path from Finder should be smb://xxx.xxx.x.xx/media/HD-CELU2/test, but having tested this, I'm still not getting in. P.S. I'm using Samba as I have a Windows machine on my home network as well.

• Do I really need Microsoft Updates?

  When I install a fresh copy of XP home (bought it from the store.. not a copy) my pc rocks like lightening speed. But when I start installing all the updates, patches & less .NET 4.0 client (As the .NET 4.0 Client seems to bring machine to slow crawl). The pc starts to slow down.. like there is more resources to watch or something in the background is happening. So could I not get away with a awesome virus protector & awesome firewall set-up and avoid all the patches? The machine I have is a quad 4, 4gb ram and 2.3 GHZ process. Tons of room and the machine can run several apps at one time.. but when the updates happen.. its s-l-o-w!

  Hello! One of the owners of my company has put me to task to sync his pictures between the following devices together. (2) iPhones (2) iMacs (1) Macbook Air (1) iPad Here is what is happening 1) He has a camera that can upload pictures into iPhoto in either (1) of his iMacs, or Macbook Air. 2) He has (2) different iPhones. And here are how they are paired up iPhone - iMac Home iPhone - Macbook Air 3) He has MobileMe syncing Calendar, Contacts, and Notes across all devices 4) Currently we are using MobileMe web galleries to sync all photos, by having ME create each album and upload them to the MobileMe web gallery. Not the problem is. He wants to just take pictures, and once he does that it syncs with all his devices, he'll even dock the iPad. Is there a better way to sync photos between all devices?

• installing plugins in vim

  I had a real difficulty installing vim plugins on mac. I know for a plugin to be installed it has to be seen by runtimepath. According to vim docs, this is Macintosh: "$VIM:vimfiles, $VIMRUNTIME, $VIM:vimfiles:after" First off, what does $VIM:vimfiles mean?? It is certainly not $VIM/vimfiles, as (~/.vim/vimfiles) does not work. So my options are 1) put my plugin in /usr/share/vim/vim73 (my $VIMRUNTIME, which i know to be BAD) 2) find a way to make vim look at my home directory when including plugins. I have putting my plugin in: ~/.vim/plugin.vim ~/.vim/vimfiles/plugin.vim ~/.vim/plugin/plugin.vim All to no avail. Can somebody help me out here? Thanks!

• How to disable Windows 8 lock screen?

  So I took a plunge and installed Windows 8 Consumer Preview on my main home PC. So far so good, but there is one annoyance - the system "locks" the computer after a period of inactivity causing me to re-enter my password. I really would like to avoid this, but have no idea how. I already tried the power settings (no pass on wake up) and the screen saver settings with no luck. Is this some sort of bug, or am I missing something? P.S. In this case I favor convenience over security.

  As I have worked with customers deploying Live Upgrade in their environments, several problems seem to surface over and over. With this blog article, I will try to collect these troubles, as well as suggest some workarounds. If this sounds like the beginnings of a Wiki, you would be right. At present, there is not enough material for one, so we will use this blog for the time being. I do expect new material to be posted on occasion, so if you wish to bookmark it for future reference, a permanent link can be found here. Live Upgrade copies over ZFS root clone This was introduced in Solaris 10 10/09 (u8) and the root of the problem is a duplicate entry in the source boot environments ICF configuration file. Prior to u8, a ZFS root file system was not included in /etc/vfstab, since the mount is implicit at boot time. Starting with u8, the root file system is included in /etc/vfstab, and when the boot environment is scanned to create the ICF file, a duplicate entry is recorded. Here's what the error looks like. # lucreate -n s10u9-baseline Checking GRUB menu... System has findroot enabled GRUB Analyzing system configuration. Comparing source boot environment file systems with the file system(s) you specified for the new boot environment. Determining which file systems should be in the new boot environment. Populating contents of mount point . This should not happen ------ Copying. Ctrl-C and cleanup If you weren't paying close attention, you might not even know this is an error. The symptoms are lucreate times that are way too long due to the extraneous copy, or the one that alerted me to the problem, the root file system is filling up - again thanks to a redundant copy. This problem has already been identified and corrected, and a patch (121431-58 or later for x86, 121430-57 for SPARC) is available. Unfortunately, this patch has not yet made it into the Solaris 10 Recommended Patch Cluster. Applying the prerequisite patches from the latest cluster is a recommendation from the Live Upgrade Survival Guide blog, so an additional step will be required until the patch is included. The auto registration file is mandatory for this upgrade. Use -k argument along with luupgrade command. autoreg_file is path to auto registration information file. See sysidcfg(4) for a list of valid keywords for use in this file. The format of the file is as follows. oracle_user=xxxx oracle_pw=xxxx http_proxy_host=xxxx http_proxy_port=xxxx http_proxy_user=xxxx http_proxy_pw=xxxx For more details refer "Oracle Solaris 10 9/10 Installation Guide: Planning for Installation and Upgrade". As with the previous problem, this is also easy to work around. Assuming that you don't want to use the auto-registration feature at upgrade time, create a file that contains just autoreg=disable and pass the filename on to luupgrade. • What could explain my partitions disappearing on a new SSD with Windows 7?

  So this morning, I had a fresh install of Windows 7 pro, on a new SSD (Patriot TorqX 128gb), which I just put in to a new Dell Studio XPS 9000. Everything was fine. I booted to windows, no problem. I go to work. 8 hours later, I come home, and I'm greeted by my boot screen complaining about no bootable devices. Windows repair from the Windows 7 pro disk says it can't fix the problem. It doesn't see any windows installs. I boot up GParted, and my SSD is completely unallocated. No space used, no partitions. Perhaps this is related to allowing windows 7 to create a utility partition when I installed? Only thing I can think of. Is there some kind of known hardware issue that can result in an SSD completely wiping itself?
