• What to do with a Blowfish Key?

  I just completed backing up 8 years of my Gmail using http://gmvault.org I selected the --encrypt option which uses Blowfish encryption. According to their site: Emails can be encrypted with the option -e --encrypt. With that option, the Blowfish encryption is used to crypt your emails and chats and the first time you activate it, a secret key is randomly generated and stored in $HOME/.gmvault/token.sec. Keep great care of the secret key as if you loose or delete it your stored emails won't be readable anymore !!! I'm using OSX Lion. I'm a software engineer but far from an encryption expert. What should I do with this key? It seems like leaving it where it is now (alongside the emails) sort of misses the point of encrypting them to begin with.

• Wireless not detected on an hp Pavilion g6

  I just bought an HP Pavilion g6 laptop and I installed Natty Narwhal alongside Windows 7. In Windows 7, my WiFi works perfect but in Ubuntu it absolutely (no matter what I do) won't detect my home WiFi network. • VirtualBox - Mac OSX host Win7 guest - no Internet access for guest VM

  I have a Mac running OSX 10.9.2, and I just downloaded and installed a Win7 IE9 VM in VirtualBox. My Mac uses Wi-Fi for internet access, and it's behind a proxy (it's a work machine). VirtualBox loads the VM fine, and at some point the VM can see the DNS servers of the host. But I've never been able to make the VM have internet access. I've tried all kinds of combinations of Network settings on the VM via the VirtualBox Settings, in conjunction with Internet Sharing in OSX's System Preferences, but no luck. Has anyone done a similar setup and made the VM successfully connect to the Internet? Thanks in advance for any inputs. [ Update: I was able to get internet access for the VM when the host was using my home network. When I ran the VPN software to connect to the work network, the internet access went away again.] (Initially posted this on stackoverflow.com, but it was put on hold as off-topic by several users, and was advised to ask here instead)

  hi all I have 3 PC's at home (with Win XP, Win 7 & Win 7) and a router. I am always connected to the internet through the router (PPoE connection). My problem is that sometimes when I want to search or open a page, my browser tells me that the server cannot be reached, as if I don't have a connection to the internet. Other times it logs me out from messenger, but browsing still works. FTP download/upload also works. If i disable and enable the LAN then all works fine. Anyone got any idea besides re-installing OS? thanks

• How to install software packages on a shared Red Hat Linux host account without root access or rpm?

  I have a shared RHEL 4 host account where I do not have root privileges. I would like to install Git and Bash Complete in a way that they can be upgraded easily. To date, I've just been installing from source providing $HOME as a prefix to autoconf. Obviously this isn't ideal as I need to hunt down the files associated with the version I'm upgrading away from and delete them. I've tried using rpm but I just get -bash: rpm: command not found back so it's not available. I also looked into checkinstall but it looks like that requires rpm, dpkg, or Slackware's package manager to be available. Is there anything out there that can be used like a package manager without requiring root access or an existing package manager?

• Too sell or give for free

  Hello everyone! I am currently making a game that I was originally planning to sell. It is a simple 2D arcade style game for the PC. I've seen many indie games become popular and generate revenue from advertisements, but the game itself remains free. I need some advice on whether or not I should sell my game, release it for free with advertisements, or ask for donations and keep the game free. I feel that my game is fun, but of course the graphics aren't tip top because I am a programmer, not an artist. I just take screenshots of 3D models I get from Turbosquid and crop around it to make a sprite. Also, and I could be very wrong about this, it seems that there are more legal issues surrounding selling a game than making it free and generating revenue from advertisement, or asking for donations. If I am wrong, someone please correct me. Also, I am very interested in generating some revenue for my work, but that isn't at the very top of my list. I am in my last year of high school, soon to be going to college, and I am going to major in computer science/software engineering. So I am trying to gain some preliminary experience at home by coding stuff every day. One way of getting this experience is by making this game. So what do you think? What route should I take? What has worked well with other indie games? Thanks in advance.

• ATI Driver for HP Pavilion dv2 notebook?

  I'm looking for a Windows XP Professional (32-bit) ATI video driver for an HP Pavilion dv2 (model 1118nr). I've downloaded and run several drivers packages, but none have worked so far. The notebook has a sticker on it that reads, "ATI Radeon Premium Graphics 3000 Series" The notebook has an AMD Athlon Neo 64 CPU and it came with Vista 64, but I have a requirement to run 32-bit Windows XP. Does such a driver exist, and if so, where is it? I've tried the AMD ATI graphics drivers portal, but the "Mobility Radeon" section does not list the 3000 series. The "Radeon" section does list the 3000 series, but the package I downloaded and installed from there was not helpful. I also selected "All Graphics - Notebook" on the "Search Drivers and Downloads" page, then selected "Windows XP Professional/Home" on the OS drop down, pressed "Submit", and downloaded and installed the only choice (this single choice is listed twice), but again, it didn't seem to help.

• Problems with vim/locale as non-root user on Solaris

  I do some work on a Solaris 10 machine, and my .vimrc is set up to show unicode characters for tabs and line endings: set listchars=tab:?\ ,eol:¬ This works out of the box on my OS X machine. On Linux as well as Solaris I get the following error when I start vim: Error detected while processing /home/lhanson/.vimrc: line 17: E474: Invalid argument: listchars=tab:?~V?\ ,eol:¬ I solved this on my Linux box by setting LANG=en_US.utf8 ('locale -a' shows this as being an option). On Solaris, however, 'locale -a' shows the following: C POSIX iso_8859_1 Setting LANG to C or POSIX yields the same error, and even though iso_8859_1 probably wouldn't work it doesn't successfully change the locale anyway. As a non-root user, is there any way I can have my unicode characters show up?

• Ubuntu - Create a link to a specified directory so I can easily change to that directory

  Is it possible to create a symlink to a directory, like /var/lib/tomcat6/webapps/MyWar that I can access from everywhere? I want to be able to say cd myapp from anywhere in the directory tree and go to that directory. Is it only possible in the directory where I create the symlink? Do I have to update my ~/.bashrc file to include an alias like: alias myapp="cd /var/lib/tomcat6/webapps/MyWar" and then just type myapp from anywhere? What is the best way to handle this situation so I don't always have to type in the long directory? I also want to be able to use that parameter in say a copy command, so the alias wouldn't help in that situation. Hopefully I can do something similar where ~ maps to the home directory in any command.

• NEC MultiSync Resolution Problem

  I have a slightly odd issue with my monitor, an NEC MultiSync LCD1970NXp. I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate on a Toshiba Tecra M5 laptop, and according to Windows Update I have the latest drivers. When I restart the laptop on the docking station at work with the monitor attached, it runs under 1024x800, but the optimum resolution for the monitor is 1280x1024, which isn't an available resolution in the Windows Screen Resolution dialog. If I restart the laptop undocked e.g. at home, it goes to 1280x1024, which is the resolution of the laptop screen. If I subsequently hibernate it and then wake it up on the docking station, the monitor then quite happily displays at 1280x1024. Can anyone suggest what the problem might be, or a method by which I can restart on the docking station and still get 1280x1024.

• How can I run this script on startup, restart, and shutdown?

  I'm using Ubuntu 11.10. I've written a script, that synchronises a directory in ~ with a directory on /dev/sda4, using Unison. Before, I had this script running every five minutes with no problems, using crontab. Right now, I want to execute this script at startup, restart and shutdown only. This is what the script looks like: #!/bin/bash unison -perms 0 -batch "/mnt/Data/Syncfolder/" "/home/myname/Syncfolder/" My crontab configuration was as follows: m h dom mon dow command 0,5,10,15,20,25,30,35,40,45,50,55 * * * * sh /usr/local/bin/s4lj.bash Note that I copied the script from ~ to /usr/local/bin/ first, to avoid root problems. I've read How to execute script on shutdown? and How to write an init script that will execute an existing start script?. After doing that, I've done this: I've made s4lj.bash executable, and then copied it to /etc/init.d/. For startup, I've made a symlink in /etc/rc2.d/ to /etc/init.d/s4lj.bash, and renamed it to S70s4lj.bash. For restart, I've made a symlink in /etc/rc6.d/ to /etc/init.d/s4lj.bash, and renamed it to K70s4lj.bash. For shutdown, I've made a symlink in /etc/rc0.d/ to /etc/init.d/s4lj.bash, and renamed it to K70s4lj.bash. Still, the script won't be run in any of these situations. How can I make the script get executed? I'd be happiest with a proper *.conf file in /etc/init. Thanks in advance.

• "Failed to create swap space" error during installation

  I've been trying to install Ubuntu for the past two days or so, but I've been running into a problem: every time I run the installation program on the LiveCD, I always get the same (or a very similar) error: "Failed to create Swap space The creation of swap space in partition #3 of SCSI5 (0,0,0)(sda) failed." So far, I've run DBAN (Darik's Boot and Nuke) on my HDD once, to make absolutely sure that everything on it had been erased. Then, I simply put in the LiveCD, and let it run the automated install. I get the above error directly after I tell it to automatically partition the HDD (it will work for a second or so, then this will pop up), forcing me back to the screen that lets me choose whether I want to automatically or manually partition the HDD. Well, after failing to install the software manually, I did a little research and learned enough about partitioning Linux to use the 'Manual partitioning' option. I partitioned the HDD as follows (it's a 1TB drive): /home - (the rest)- ext2, / - 20GB - ext2, /boot - 100MB - ext2, /swap - 8GB /EFIboot - 40MB The only difference when I tried this method was that I got THIS message: "Failed to create Swap space The creation of swap space in partition #2 of SCSI5 (0,0,0)(sda) failed." Basically, the only difference was that there was now a '2' instead of a '3'. If I may ask, what exactly am I doing wrong? I've tried looking around the internet (that's basically all I've done for the last two days), but no one seems to have the same problem that I have, and I've tried most of the solutions for similar problems (DBAN, formatting partitions in ext2 format, etc). The only thing I haven't tried is using the terminal to manually partition the HDD...and I actually DID try to do this, but I wasn't able to get past 'su' 's password demand, so I wasn't able to use the terminal. • How not to send all traffic over SBS connection?

  Hi, My girlfriend uses SBS Connection Manager to connect to her company's network. The problem is that the internet connection is überslow at work, so she wants to use the home internet connection to surf the web and use the SBS Connection to get to her work stuff. Normally with a VPN connection you just have to uncheck a box "Send all traffic over VPN connection" or "Use VPN as default gateway" or something like that. As I've never seen this SBS Connection Manager-thing before, I've no idea where to uncheck a similar box. • Windows update install hangs

  I'm trying to deploy .Net 3.5 on an XP home SP2 machine for a customer. The install fails, with an error about WIC. Trying to install WIC on its own gave an error about not being able to verify the application, because the cryptographic service wasn't running. A reboot got that service running, but now the install just hangs on the "inspecting your current configuration" Task manager reports that DrWatson is doing a lot (constantly using 10% of processor time) but beyond that I don't know how to instrument what a Windows machine is doing, has anyone seen this before?
